I finally started this, working on the airport one now!

Ofelia did not have any idea what was going on in regards to her roommate. Kam had been missing in action for what seemed like a lifetime; however the bills were being paid on time and there had been no angry phone calls chasing him up, which meant he was probably alive? Who knew.

The brunette had become far too accustomed to people disappearing and would not be too surprised if Kam’s name was the most recent addition to an ever growing list. Loss had become a biter and lingering taste in her mouth, one that was becoming far too potent.

Ofelia had kept the apartment clean and, out of respect, never invited guests. She had given Kam’s room a wide birth and tried to cause as little disruption as possible. Now, pouring boiling water into a coffee mug, she was ready to settle down for the night. Her hair was in a messy bun and she was wearing a t-shirt she had stolen from Kam before his disappearance, it was the closest thing to a set of pyjamas she had.

Sat on the couch watching soap operas, a moisturising mask on her face and a cup of coffee in hand - she was not expecting any company tonight.

It was an odd feeling, standing outside his door and wondering if he should knock or just open it with the key. He knew Ofelia was there - he could see the bright, blue flickers of the television through the window and the steady hum of voices inside sounded just like those awful drama things she liked so much. It was an odder feeling to realize he was smiling, happy that she seemed so at home.

In the end he just unlocked the door and swung it open, tossing his duffle onto the hardwood entry floor.

"Honey, I'm home!" His voice boomed into the apartment with all the jolliness he could muster, though he was mostly trying to make sure she was decent without him sneaking up on her. Ofie had been pretty modest - which Sana had always found delightful, though he tried to be mindful.

As the door shut he was rounding the corner into the living room, only smiling crookedly as he found her sitting with the colorful mask on her face. He'd seen worse, though maybe not from her. He leaned a shoulder into the archway and studied her there from the hall.

"Did you miss me?"

Ofelia admittedly almost spilled her drink when she heard an all too familiar voice bellowed through the apartment, squinting and waving her hand as the scalding pain ran down her fingers and across her hand. Putting the cup down on the side table she twisted her body to look over the back of the couch, just as he appeared in the doorway. She just looked over at him dumbfounded for a moment; relief washing over her like a wave. The brunette opened her mouth slightly to talk, but no words came out, instead she just sighed and smiled. She had not realised just how worried she had been, how shameful.

“Let me get you something warm to drink, it has been pretty cold out lately.” She shrugged, sliding from the couch before making her towards him and the doorway. She placed a hand on his arm for a second as she passed, before heading towards the bathroom. Just outside the door to her room, all her things were packed up in two bags, ready to leave in a moments notice - She never knew when someone would come knowing to reclaim the property.

Even though she was dressed she knew she was far from presentable, or what she would consider presentable; she washed the mask from her face and pulled on the jeans and hoodie she had thrown in the laundry moments before and then reappeared in the hall. The hoodie was new, on the back there was a penguin with a hockey stick, the logo reading ‘Destiny City Penguins, Youth League.’ Though that was another story, for another time.

She was taking the bun out of her hair as she entered the kitchen, throwing the stands over her shoulders before flicking on the kettle. ”Would you like something to eat?” She asked, having noticed the duffle bag by the door she presumed the worst. Ofelia was no stranger to sleeping rough, but she knew it was best not to pry. There was a pot of stew on the cooker, Ofelia was economical and not opposed to reheating and eating the same thing every night, a pot of stew could keep her fed for a week.

She should of asked where him where he had been. Asked him what was prompted him to disappear so suddenly. But that was not the kind of person she was, right now her one and only priority was making sure he was okay. He would tell her when he was ready - or maybe he did not want her to know. Still, it was obvious that she was acting like he had just come back from a day at work, not returning from the dead. She paused for a moment, leaning against the kitchen counter and turning to the threshold to see if he had followed.

        “Are you okay?”

It was cute the way she jumped up and immediately began to try and make herself both presentable and useful, earning her a gentle smile as he lazily followed her through the living room once she'd cleaned her mask off and ultimately to the kitchen. He leaned in that door frame, too, watching her fuss about with stew and tea and whatever else she was going to maternally cram down his throat.

He was so glad to be home that it was hard to hold it against her.

"I'm alright, Ofie. I wasn't for a while but I'm feeling better. Thanks for house sitting," he paused and glanced behind him at the side table in the entry way, just to make sure that there were no bills laying on the table top he had missed. He had stopped by a few times to collect them, even asked Ariel to check for him once, but Ofelia hadn't ever been home when he'd popped in. "I'm pretty sure I kept up with everything but I guess we'll find out if the power turns off, hm?"

There was an easy chuckle, one to ease the tension in the air, as he finally pushed his shoulder off of the doorway and righted his posture. The brute had wasted a little in the time between being locked up on his wonder and hiding at his cabin and, though still quite hulking, looked a bit slimmer through his face and shoulders. He was hungry, actually, and her stew smelled damn good. He was always hungry, he thought, now that he felt like he was finally on the mend.

"Starving, though. I've only had some coffee in the last few hours to keep me awake for the drive home." As he crossed the kitchen and opened the cabinet where he kept the bowls, he watched her from the corner of his eyes.

"Everything been okay here?" No Negaverse attacks? Ransom notes?

She opened her mouth to speak, but stopped herself, she was the last person to be able to criticise anyone for withdrawing in a time of need. Whenever she had been in trouble, whenever she had found herself in a dark place - she always ran. The brunette cleared her throat and shook her head, thinking it best to avoid the conversation all together. She did not want to fight, she did not want to feel anything but happiness that he had returned safe and well. However, under her initial joy was an underlying current of dread, knowing that he chose to isolate himself instead of coming to her for help. Then again, could she really blame him? Ofelia by her very nature was cold and uninviting, she had no right to begrudge him his choices.

Kam, by his own admission was doing better, that should really be the end of it. “Good to hear.” Turning around she poured the boiling water into a cup and stirred the contents thoroughly. Bowing her head slightly she nudged it in his direction, before lifting herself on the counter-top to sit as he helped himself to what she had made, taking the chance to look him over. He looked okay, a little worse for wear, a little tired - a little thin in the face and pale in the skin, but she had seen worse. “Nothing to worry about. You just focus on yourself for now, the rest can wait.” Ofelia had been holding up the forte here and had been doing her best to keep her own monsters at bay. She was dealing with consequences of a world that Kam was separate from, it was not her place to involve him in such turmoil, it was hers and hers alone.

“I have been… worried. It is your business Kam, I am not going to stick my nose in it, but a voice mail would not have gone unappreciated.”

She felt like she was carrying the weight of the world as it was and as selfish as it sounded, she did not have the energy to help Kam fight whatever demons he was battling, but that did not mean she was not in his corner. For as much as she had tried her very best to keep him at arm's length, in the end she fell again and again to her humanity. No matter how high she built that wall, it was weak and crumbled every time.

She ran her fingers through her hair, not sure how to express what she was feeling. She really sucked at stuff like this.

”Don’t do it again. I won't forgive you next time.” It was not a threat, her voice was too meek, too concerned for it to even sound like one.

Kam had let her speak and nodded along at her chiding - of course a voicemail would have been good. Honestly, he had only even spoken to Ariel, so unaccustomed as he had become to letting other people get attached to his life. Sana was mad, too, but she could deal with her troubles in the top suite of the Xanis monstrosity for all that he was concerned.

Ophie, though?

He was smiling to himself as he sat down at the kitchen table with bowl and cup in hand. He didn't even respond to her for a moment, choosing instead to shovel a mouthful of stew into his mouth - then another, and another, and another as his stomach reacted to the food. It was damn good, simple or not. After he'd eaten a few bites and contented his raging hunger, his dark eyes lifted up to hers again where she sat atop his counter.

"Getting attached, O? I didn't think I'd ever see the day."

He was chuckling as he went back to his soup, but the look on his face had been regret because he knew she was right. If he had any hope of maintaining his life and keeping it from spiraling out of control again then that meant that he had to start caring more about the people he let into it. There was no way to ask people to depend on him and then keep bailing. He knew it. She knew it. For a moment he stopped eating and just stared into the warm orange of the liquid, tapping his spoon against the side of his bowl so he could watch the vibration across the top of the soup line.

"I won't do it again, but I need your help with something." A pause, and then. "Could you put the rest of the booze where I can't find it? Keep it if you want it, just in your room?" He looked up from the bowl finally and leveled his eyes on her with an uneasy smile. Of course he could do it himself, but that temptation was there in his veins, begging. "It'd be a shame to let the whole collection got to waste but I really think it would be best."

Ofelia could not help but shoot him a glare at his comment, protesting instantly. “I don’t get attached.” She lied, shrugging as she rolled her eyes. Just because her resolve was wavering did not mean she was ready to admit it yet, not ready to voice that weakness. She was at a strange junction; at the crossroads of wanting to be more involved and wanting to run away - knowing full well every path lead to the same end. Nothing good ever came from getting attached.

Then Kam’s request came as a surprise, but her face did not show it, instead she just raised a brow - her face settling back into its common, pouty default. “Sure, you will have to tell me if you have a secret stash somewhere though.” She did not know why he had requested the change, but if it was something he was taking seriously nothing could remain. She was not going to go rummaging around his room, so she could only hope he was being truthful when he said he was not hiding anything.

Even though she was sure he kept something away from the main selection for entertainments and conveniences sake.

She could not help but think, what the heck was she actually going to do with his collection? She swung her legs back and forth, tapping against the counter as she thought. “I think it would be best out the apartment, I can move it to my room tonight, pack it up and take it to my boyfriends tomorrow.” She was not a big drinker and thought the more social characters in her small circle of acquaintances would appreciate it more. Serve it up at one of those parties she always avoided.

Ofelia did not ask any questions, did not try and understand his reasoning. Kam had asked her to do him a favour and she would jump to it. She slid off of the countertop and slipped her hands into the pockets on her hoodie. ”After you have eaten, why don’t you get a shower and an early night? It is good to have you back, but you look like hell - besides, it gives me a chance to clear everything out.” Without him having to watch her do it.

And just like that, Kam felt their dynamic shift.

Gone was the angry, timid girl he had rescued from street scum in the alley and here, in her place, was the mother hen that used her anger to scold him for his actions without making him feel as if she was actually angry with him. Just disappointed. Despite the recurring theme with people scolding him lately, he smiled into another bite of his food.

“Mmm,” he thought aloud as he shoveled through his stew, pretending to consider where certain things might be hidden. “There’s a handle of fireball tucked between my bed and the wall and there’s probably a flask full of something in the hall closet. I don’t remember when I used it last but -” he ended with a shrug. The flask was his ‘hiding cheap booze in the club’ tool and he hadn’t been out since the night he fought with Sana. It was undoubtedly still filled but he wasn’t going to check.

Ofie was right, he needed a shower and a good night’s sleep in his own bed. He watched her as she slid off of the counter and settled into her bones, more confident now that she had a little purpose. Kam was never the sort that liked to ask for help but knowing that Ofie wasn’t either always seemed to make his confessions a little smoother.

“I really am sorry, Ofie. I got in over my head in a way I can’t..” his eyes dropped from her and back to his soup bowl as silence found him again and fuddled his words. “Just, thanks for sticking around.”

This is so late. I am scum.

Ofelia had decided, she really hated seeing Kam like this. Maybe her expectations were too high. Or maybe she just saw too much of her own weakness in him. In her mind Kam was strong, she knew he was strong and she was not only considering his physique. He had a strong head too and a stronger heart. Seeing him look down into his food like a kicked puppy, it made anger bubble in her stomach. She brought her hand down and hit the center of the table, hard enough to have a small amount of stew spilling over the side of the bowl. Golden eyes sought out his and for the first time tonight she actually looked at him, trying to peer into that soul of his, so seek out some spark of a fight. A spark that would put her at ease.

“Don’t apologise, it doesn’t suit you. Besides, I am a big girl I don’t need a ‘sorry’ from you to sleep easy at night.” If he had ******** up as badly as he was suggesting then the only person he had let down was himself. Words were not going to make her forgive him, she wanted to see action, some bite, a glimmer of life. Maybe she was being unsympathetic, overly harsh, cruel. But this was how she expressed love, she often scolded Castor and Remarque in the same way. Why was she doing this? Why was she not just walking away?

She leaned closer to him, wanting him to hear what she was saying. “What I need is for you do beat down whatever demon is tormenting you and get over yourself. Like I know you can.” There was no doubt in her voice, no doubt in her heart, that he could overcome whatever challenge he was facing. She could not fight it for him, she could not help anymore than he had asked her to, so trying to coddle him was useless. It was going to be hard, it was going to hurt, but that was all on him. “You’re stronger than this, own it and move on. Draw a line and stop looking over your shoulder, make peace with it and adapt.”

Maybe this is why nobody would come to her for help. Finally her stance relaxed and she sighed. Thanks for sticking around? The corner of her mouth twitched with amusement. “Yea well, I have no other place to go. I am a street dwelling parasite remember? You're the only person dumb enough to let me leech off of them. You’re strong, I said nothing about being smart.” She joked, taking a moment before placing her hand on the back of his. She remained in silence, waiting to see if her words had only made things worse.

She did not know if this was the right thing to do.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 27, 2017 5:01 pm

The slam of her hand on the table was startling enough that Kam’s eyes had widened in unison with the gaze that snapped up to meet hers. Maybe there were people in the world that appreciated being coddled or treated like a child but part of the brute’s inclination towards solitary sulking was simply because he didn’t appreciate sympathy. Though his jaw tightened at her words and his eyes narrowed the moment he had control of them, there was nothing in his face to say that her advice was making him more angry than it made sense.

No, from Delphine to Fiona to Ariel to Sana, all the women in his life were permanent fixtures because they never wanted to put up with his bullshit. As her hand slid over the back of his in the only form of real comfort she was offering, Kam realized that he was about to add another name to that list. Ofelia was not going to let him stew on his aching soul.

She had spilled his stew though.

His meaty hand twisted beneath her grip so that he could clutch her fingers in his own, holding her close in his brooding silence while his eyes searched back through her own. Who was she, this street rat he had taken in? The roof over her head was not enough to make her feel as if she had a debt to repay - if Ofelia felt that he was not worth her time, that this home was not worth the trouble, then he had no doubt she would just slink back out into the streets and make herself at home in an alley. She was no more afraid of the Destiny City night than he was. That, too, made him curious.

“You’re my favorite street-dwelling parasite,” his first words after the silence he held during her speech were a deflection, an amusing quip to deflate some of the seriousness that had swelled up and threatened to consume them. This was his coming home, not a night to throw all of his woes on the shoulders of someone that was still learning to trust someone else in her life. Selfish as ever, he supposed.

Confident that his soup bowl had cooled enough, he released her hand and used both of his big mitts to bring his stew up to his lips - he gave it one loud slurp, drinking down enough that his stomach felt heavy and warm from it, then sighed in pleasure as he brought it down enough to speak again.

“I’m gonna finish eating, shower, and then get some ******** sleep while you hide all my booze. Would you protest too much if I take you to buy some things for your room tomorrow?” Both of his elbows leaned on the table, making it shift a little under the pressure of his weight. “If you won’t take a sorry, at least I can give you enough s**t that you don’t feel like a damn street urchin. This is home, Ofie.”
