Many flaws existed within the human’s soul. The troublesome trait of the moment was his vengeful desire for retribution. Orynoko had been humiliated upon his recapture and return to the vessel of his imprisonment. One could argue that in some ways he could break free anytime he wanted and therefore he put himself in this situation. However, anyone in his position would know that he wasn’t truly free to claim his own life. Too many years had him trapped him in place. Those shackles on his wrists were a constant visual reminder that he was owned. It could be worse; he could have a cruel owner. Instead, the captain of this fine ship was rather kind to Orynoko.. for a pirate that is. He kept the lad alive all these years, educated, and well enough for labor. It was because of the kindness that the Captain showed him so often that his recent punishment came as a backhanded slap to the ego. How could he leave him with his mortal enemy like that?Caelum sighed and looked at his companion. All the frustration and confusion vibrating off the human was enough to bring the tiri’s head to spin. “Orynoko, please calm down. all these questions aren’t helping and overthinking it will make it worse.” There was a worried frown sitting on his face from all the inner struggles Ory suffered from that were without his assistance. The pleas of his astral went unheeded as he continued thinking. Was it Kidev’s intention to bring strife between the two men? He had to know of Orynoko's distaste for the halfbreed Nivasi. The whole thing made no sense to the Navigator and he groaned in frustration trying to figure it out. Rhyme and reason was unfounded in this situation. Furthermore the First Mate was a cruel man, splashing him with chum as he worked on his chores! There was an understanding nod given to Orynoko. Even the tiri couldn’t justify such an action. Though he personally didn’t consider it the worst thing that Vanu could have done. There were many dangerous things that could have happened. However, Caelum understood his human: there had to be justice to Orynoko and there was no stopping him from acting out. “Listen, instead of cutting up his bed, how about you..” and he leaned in with a whisper to suggest. Finally Orynoko was paying attention to Caelum. A sly smile slid over his lips at the suggestion. He purposely waited for Vanu to be out as he took a bucket of fish chum he had acquired from the kitchen of the ship in hand. He waited for the sleeping area to be completely clear, and left his astral as guard as he snuck in. It wasn’t hard to distinguish Vanu’s bed from anyone else’s; that fish man had a very strong scent unlike most others. It was about to get a lot more unique in oder. Across the entire cloth and netting that made up the First Mate’s bunk, the human dumped the content of the discarded fish: bones, guts, scales, blood, the works. It was foul to most, but in Orynoko's opinion it was possible that Vanu would enjoy his closeness with the ocean while sleeping. The wretched smell and liquids seeped in to stain and sully the hammock while Orynoko hurried off to return the bucket to the kitchen and get to work as if nothing had occurred. The longer it was left to fester the better the revenge.WC: 585

The Nivasi half-breed rubbed the sweat from his brow, all the while he couldn’t recall a moment where he bothered to sit. His role as the First Mate had really kept him up on his toes. Seemed like at least five people needed his attention or word for something to get done. When it finally came time for him to rest. Throughout the day he thought he could smell something whenever he was near the cabins, he imagined that some poor soul had gotten sick or something. That aside at the day’s end he was one of the last ones into the bunk area. The smell was overpowering now, even as a creature of the sea himself he felt like was suppressing the urge to vomit. The smell continued to get stronger as he made his way through the other crew and looked to the place that was emitting the noxious aroma. Vanu hid how far his heart sunk when he found that the odor was in fact coming from chum that had steeped his poor hammock.
He fought against blind rage, that in these close quarters would be good no man here, and as the First Mate he did have to save face. But he went to long without a word it seems.
“First Mate Vanu?” One of the men questioned noticing the man’s pause.
“Do me a favor lads and trash this thing.” Vanu ordered, a quiet breath
“Where you plannin’ to sleep First Mate?” Another questioned as some of the other started to undo the nasty bedding.
“I’ll find my own place to sleep. I recommend sleeping with the doors open to help it air out.” Vanu offered as he started to for the doors. He took a deep breath, and walked out past the other crewman back out to the open air. One to get a breath of fresh air and two, he removed his boots to dive back into the water. He already had a clue of who would stoop that low. And he wasn’t about to sleep on the same ship as a brat that would do such.

It didn't take long for word to reach the Captain of the rotten hammock that had been discovered. The half swan rolled his head to stretch his aching neck a bit before sighing and ordering the ship to drop its anchor. Along with all the information that came up was the word that Vanu had gone off on one of his nightly swims after the discovery. Kidev was not a fool. He knew why the man had left. However, he was not about to abandon him out in the ocean as they sailed forward. Now the ship was halted and they had just gotten a day's rest after a mission. He was frustrated in his own limitations. While he wanted to approach Orynoko directly, until Vanu filed a complaint directly with him, Kidev's hands were tied. He couldn't intervene on the matter without hearing it directly from the one involved and he knew the human wasn't going to talk. For the time that they were anchored in the ocean, Kidev took to the crow's nest to keep watch and let his crew try to rest, in spite of the smell. Even Orynoko would suffer for it but it was a well earned punishment that he was ordered to sleep in the hammock closest to the smell. The Captain in the meantime would keep watch of the still world below until Vanu returned.WC: 232

It would be about a full day and half before anyone would see Vanu again, he was trying his best to not let the lad’s actions get the better of him. It was a struggle to not swim back to the ship and rip the little man’s throat out, he had the power to. Yet, he knew that wasn’t the option that would be best for the ship. There was still a loyalty to that, and to the Captain. But for the time being he needed a way to take a respite, even though they had just been at shore. Being out a drift at sea was enough therapy for him to be able to make it through a bit more, it was no issue for him to live a day at sea on his lonesome. It came time for him to return he felt. He would seen idly floating in the water. Clearly alive, to those that knew that dead bodies end up belly down. He would climb back aboard, and the first thing he would want was his basic comforts.

When the dawn had cracked over the horizon, after spending the night in the crow's nest with no sleep, the Captain returned to his quarters, ordering the crew to man the ship as though they would journey. One of the older more reliable crewmates was ordered to look after Vanu's effects and alert him whenever his First Mate returned. The man was rather agitated the longer they were anchored in one place.
Orynoko had been ordered to scrub down the sleeping quarters, though it was unsaid why he alone was given this task. Kidev was not about to let the lad go completely without labor for the suspected actions but until Vanu spoke, it was all speculation before he could confront the boy himself. In the meantime, the crew stayed on alert, and by the time Vanu climbed back, he could see they all looked rather bored. However, at his return, energy surged around him and he was crowded around, with several cheers of welcome back.
The crewmate who looked after Vanu's boots and things came to his side with the requested towel and the shoes that had been left behind. Kidev would hear the chattering even in his chambers. One remarked, "Finally we can lift anchor!" He ran off to get the ship moving again.WC: 216

“Glad to see I was missed boys.” Vanu would give the crew an honest smile. He pulled his boots back on and rolled the towel up to be on his neck to get the wet hair of his neck, “Well get this ship in motion.”
He would first resume his duties as normal, but that evening he would talk to the Captain about his sudden absence. It was fairly obvious but there was protocol that needed to be followed aboard the ship. Otherwise, they would have been face with mutiny a long time ago.
“My Captain?” He knocked on the cabin door, “ May I have your ear for a moment?”

The crew was energized by the smile of their beloved First Mate and it didn't take more than one order for them to get in gear. The ship was moving towards a clear destination but if Vanu would notice, the Navigator was clearly avoiding Vanu's path like the plague. Even his astral was steering clear, and avoiding him. The order had been given to leave him alone and alone they would. However, by the time the sun was beginning to kiss the ocean, there were murmurs among the crewmates. Several of them went inside the ship to the Captain's chambers.
By the time Vanu had come to his door, Kidev was already talking with someone else who was clearly enthused and firm, "Aye, Sir, it be an honor!" However, the knock silenced both and the door was opened by the crewmate who was talking a moment ago. He seemed joyous as he stepped aside to let Vanu in. Kidev waved his hand to the crewmate and he shuffled out, shutting the door behind him.
Despite being gone from sight all day, Kidev wore his 'war paint' proudly, and seemed rather worn. Several papers were all over his round table, and from the way he leaned over them, it was clear the Captain was working hard at something. He cast a blue gaze over, "Ah, Vanu. Welcome back. Did ye have a nice swim?" He set down his quill, and turned several papers over, poorly hiding the markings for the blank backings but also clearly not even interested in keeping secrets. "'Course ye may have me ear, First Mate. What can I do fer ya?" The papin halfbreed leaned back in his chair and focused his gaze upon Vanu's face, waiting to see what he would say.WC: 296

It was wise for the troublemaker to keep his distance for the time, but it did prove his guilt. Vanu wasn’t dense enough to have that go unnoticed. But that wasn’t as important as speaking with his Captain.
“I am deeply sorry for my absence, my Captain. I wanted to start by saying that much, my role as First Mate should have me grounded then my actions would show. After finding my bed defiled, I simply couldn’t stand to be there for the moment. I took to the sea to calm myself as to not rile up the others. I will attempt to be better, in biding back my outbursts.” It was a very genuine apology for abandoning his duties for the day and half he was gone. He was doing his best to keep his professionalism, he didn’t snoop heavily but he picked up that the Captain was at work. “Am I interrupting some planning? Would prefer I come back at another time?”

Kidev rested his head against his balled fist on the arm of the chair he sat upon, watching him intently. He seemed solemn and listened closely, letting his smile appear after Vanu's question. "Tis plans fer when we land. Nothin' more and certainly not more important than ye." He let his smile slip free. Words were needed to be said that he didn't really want to. However, his sense of duty as Captain had to come before Kidev's own desires as they did before. "When ye leave the ship as our ship travels over the seas, First Mate, ya stop us from goin' further. Didn't we just chastise the boy fer such actions? Yer actions speak of me command and ta halt our travel mid sail is not good. I accept yer apology on the matter but request ye remember fer the future: As me First Mate, ye are my hand and represent me colors." The smile came back half amused. "So Vanu, be there more ye wish ta say? Surely ye won't settle fer lettin' the crew talk fer ya. Please, have a seat and tell me, What made ye take ta the sea in such anger and act so brashly?"WC: 202

“Aye, my Captain.” He confirmed, and sighed before getting into the bulk of the situation, “At this point I hardly suspect that it’s any sort of surprise. I believe it was some sort of planned revenge by the boy. I know that he does things like this to get a rise out of me, or to conclude some chapter of the back and forth torment that we have been through over the years. But, a man’s “bed” is over the top, especially when that is one of the few person items that we have.” He rubbed the bridge of his nose, “ I thought our last exchange had concluded on a decent point.” Vanu shook his head, " Guess that was just me being hopeful somewhere in the back of my head. And now I haven’t a bed unless we squirreled away some extra hammock. ”

Quietly, his smile was softened as he listened closely to the words of his First Mate, closing his eyes at the end. "Vanu, I am proud of ye. There would be bloodshed if this happened to a different crewmate but ye chose ta follow me order and leave him be. I will handle it from here."
Blue eyes opened and his smile became amused once again, almost smirking. "Well ye have no need ta fear about where ta sleep. More than half the crew has come in, offerin' ye their hammock. However, the lad is me charge." He sighed and gave a loop-sided smile, "Til we reach shore, tis me responsibility ta handle this. I offer ta ye, First Mate Vanu, me own bed ta make up for my charge's actions. So now, ya have yer pick o' the ship: the hammocks of yer fellow crewmates, or the Captain's bed. Ye can pick whatever ye see fit." Some men would be appalled by such an offer, others would be embarrassed. However, the Captain was seemingly cool and calm, almost to a tender point. It was all he had to offer Vanu since he had to deal with Orynoko himself.WC: 199

“Thank you kindly, my Captain. That means a lot coming from you. I do my best to keep my Captain, happy. ” Vanu relaxed a bit more, “I am flattered to have the offers.” He gave a soft closed eye smile, “ But what of the person I displace? Where do they end up? Or am I sharing for the duration of the trip?” Vanu mused, already pretty sure which offer he would like to accept.
“What plans do you have for Orynoko?” He also questioned sure their relation was never the best, but he still cared to know the young one’s fate for such an act, if it would be shared with him.

There was an pleased grin that cracked over the Captain's face. He enjoyed the sight of a smiling relaxed Vanu. In the many years they had sailed together Kidev had only seen this kind of smile in rare passings, usually when Vanu was able to be himself, and not just a First Mate. The captain leaned back in his chair and bowed his head slightly to look over coyly to the Nivasi Halfbreed. "Well depends whom ye choose. Be it crew, they come here and sleep in me bed with me. If ye choose the bed yerself, ye share it with me. Unless yer not comfortable with me in the bed with ya. Then I get the crow's nest." He tossed him a playful wink and chuckled. He knew too well that Vanu and him had a trust in each other that would far outweigh the worries of sharing a sleeping space.
At the mention of Orynoko's future, he leaned back forward, and looked boredly at the overturned papers as if they were visible to the naked eye. "Well, that too depends. Should he own up ta it, he will assist with the labor on these papers. Should he try ta lie, he gets a lashin'.. unless ye have a better idea. After all, twas yer bed that was ruined." Kidev was always considerate of his crew's feelings. WC: 228

Vanu idly, fixed a not in his hair while he spoke, “Well, I rather the crew keep their own beds. Shouldn’t move them from theirs because of mine. And your bed has room for two comfortably. There should be no problem there.” Vanu kept the smile going, it was nice to drop part of his First Mate mantle for a moment.
“What is on these papers might I ask? And I am not sure what I better task for him would be. He seemed unfairly upset about barnacles. That is an easy task, if done without strife. ” He thought about the start of this particular feud. “I am fairly sure he will never like me, due to principle.”

Never would Kidev speak it aloud beyond that smile but hearing him choose to share his bed was a relief in its own. Who better to trust sleeping beside than his own First Mate? However if he had chosen another he had to respect the man's choices. As the topic had shifted to the papers, his gloved hand sprawled over the papers. "Well it be a surprise. Would ye rather find out now or after we dock? I rather ye see it when its ready." Kidev smirked. He sighed and shook his head. "Barnacle work is what started this mess so we are sailed into the more troublesome waters. He needs ta learn. Any other suggestion?" The last comment made Kidev frown, "Ye never know the future, Vanu. He could come ta learn when he gets inta his place o the world." WC: 142
