"Flex your foot - feel the cane beneath you-"

Nyko was stripped bare, save for a pair of ill fitting trousers - honestly, did they think him a boy? - poised over an field of bamboo poles. Each reed stood ten feet in height, buried so far in the sand that he may have felt safe, save for the way they swayed the moment his weight was pressed atop them.

"How do you expect to run if you have no balance? Cunning will only get you so far and since you cannot fight you will run."

Nyko looked down at the older woman giving him his 'lesson' and immediately regretted it. His legs splayed, bringing him to an almost split position before he regained his composure at the last second. A few prime curses and a fresh wave of sweat down his scarred back later brought the boy back to a semi-erect stance.

His goal was simple; make it to the other side. But it was pointless! He wasn't athletic; he could sing, he could cook, and look damn sexy when cleaned up, but this...

...this was hell.

"You're crazy! You better cut back on whatever you're smoking, lady, because I can't-"

"Excuses are for boys. You are a man! Now DO IT!"

Sajahka stretched his arms over his head, humming absently to himself. It might or might not have been some bastardized rendition of whatever had been playing in the bar the night prior, or something Nyko sang repeatedly, or a strange medley of both. No one was about to hear him as he wandered down the length of the beach now (finally) looking familiar, so the exact tune didn’t seem to matter much. He was simply pleased to have made it back ‘home’ without undue trouble after his night’s forays into unfamiliar territory.

And, he supposed, a variety of other pleasing things. Like the fact that he now had funding for his and Nyko’s expedition, a full stomach, and a whole host of new experiences to add to his metaphorical belt of accomplishments and engaged-in-endeavors. His mind was as such nicely occupied, by recent memory and by the thought — as he squinted upward past the skyline to the rising sun — that the man he had spent the prior night with just might be rising by now.

He was still smiling when raised voices distracted him from his thoughts. Then, of course, curiosity was bound to get the better of him, and did.

Nyko was the most pleasant surprise he could possibly have asked for. What he was doing? Well, that seemed to be another matter entirely, and not a question Sajah was in any position as of yet to answer. As he strode closer, though, the full sight of it doing nothing to dampen his mood and in fact setting the bar high for expectations on the rest of the day, haven already given him such a good start.

Once he was in range of conversation, he whistled.

"I HEARD YOU THE FIRST TIME, YOU OLD HAG."

Nyko had been at this long enough for his legs to shake, which only made this whole 'experience' all the more pleasant.

His back arched in the sunlight, illuminating each trail of sweat that intermingled with the ugly scarring across Nyko's skin. He hesitated to take another step forward, as he had finally found some semblance of balance, but his instructor was watching, always watching, and he knew he had to move-

"Are you sure you aren't Oban? You certainly have their temper."[/b
] The older woman clucked her tongue, seeing first something out of her peripheral and then turning fully to see Sajah.

When he heard the whistle Nyko growled and turned to look down, which was a huge mistake. He crouched low, trying to hold onto his position as best he could without falling onto the sand. At first he was fully prepared to yell at the old woman for breaking his concentration, until he saw Sajah, and he looked, "-wow. I don't think I've seen you that happy in a while. It looks good on you."

"Focus, Nyko."
His instructor turned from her wayward pupil to Sajahka and motioned to the bamboo posts, as well as the platforms on either end. "I've been attempting to teach him how to at least run from attackers, since he isn't keen on defending himself. He lacks motivation to make it to the other side; perhaps you can help?"

Sajah blinked. It looks good on you.

He flashed his teeth, and reached into his pocket as he strode across the sand, positioning himself at the opposite end of Nyko’s little ‘obstacle course’ and hefting Leukos’ coin purse in his palm—enough to be sure the coins clinked audibly inside—before tossing it onto the end goal platform. It landed with a clack in the platform’s center.

«Come see why I am,» he invited. «I have a story to tell you.» He tipped his head, thoughtful for a moment before adding with an amused spark in his eye. «And maybe after I finish you can go buy yourself something nice.»

Nyko watched, as a perzi might, as the clinking sack landed on the podium. For a moment he just gawked; too surprised by the size of it and what was obviously inside of it to say much of anything. "Is that - what - how did you...?"

He took his eyes away from the prize long enough to read Sajah's ever expressive hand signs. A story? Being told by an amused, sparkling Sajahka? "SOMETHING NICE?! YOU MEAN WE DON'T HAVE TO HOARD IT?" Maybe Nyko was a little too loud, a little too excitable, but whatever it was the man was positively beaming. All of his exhaustion seemed forgotten in that moment and he was able to bring himself back up to stand.

His legs wobbled way too much to stay in one spot for long so Nyko ran. It wasn't entirely a smart plan - what with how much he had tripped up already- but at least he made it close enough to the platform that when he fell he could grab the edge instead of landing in the sand. Out of sheer force of will, eyes never leaving that glorious bag, Nyko hoisted himself up onto the platform and reached for the coin purse.

Out of breath and wheezing, he opened the satchel, almost cackling because of what he saw within. "SAJAH, YOU BEAUTIFUL b*****d."

As Sajah watched, Nyko’s train of reactions was a masterpiece from beginning to end. When his friend shouted out full vocal and made a sprint forward, Sajah figured it bound for failure—and was right. After the brief contained wince at his fall, however, Nyko seemed to make the best of it, and Sajah’s expression was back to a dimly amused smirk at Nyko’s wheezing, panting state as he clamored onto the end platform. Sajah shook his head.

He had just raised his hands to sign when Nyko, hefting the full weight of it in his palm, made his final outburst, and a sprinkle of heat dusted his ears. His mouth, though, stretched further into a lopsided grin.

«I went to a bar last night,» he signed. «I thought that drunks would make for easy steals.» He gestured to the coin bag, now secure in Nyko’s grip. «I was right. It should be enough to cover us for several months’ travel, if we are mostly careful. But there is enough…I think you could buy yourself a pretty good luck charm for yourself to remember here by.»

Nyko may have been only ten feet off the ground, but he felt as if he were on top of the world! He could have kissed Sajah had the man been closer and likely would have, but alas, that distance between them meant that his excitement had to be contained to the platform.

He kissed the coin purse instead and scooted to the edge of the platform, careful with the coin, and swung his tired legs over the edge. "A bar?" Without me? Nyko didn't want to admit that he was jealous that Sajah had such a successful, fun night while he was stuck doing grunt work; especially when it brought such a glow to his friend.

"I won't argue with that kind of logic. Just let me climb down-"

"You will do no such thing!" His instructor piped up. Nyko had almost forgotten the old hag. "Run through the drill again and this time-"

"LA LA LA, CAN'T HEAR YOU." Nyko was obnoxiously loud as he jumped off the platform, landing in the sand with less of a flourish than usual. When he jumped up he grabbed Sajah's hand, and broke off into a run, "Come on! If you move fast enough she won't be able to catch us."

Sajah watched Nyko’s lips as they pressed to the coinbag he’d procured, and then to his friend’s legs as he swung them loose in the moments before he prepared to hop down. Then, his instructor called out—and Nyko was bolting, catching at him and taking him along for the run. As soon as he caught on at least, Sajah flashed his teeth, and took off with him at his own rate. If the goal was to out run the old woman, they might as well race while doing it.

Nyko’s legs were longer than his, but he had a good burst of a start, and even if he fell behind and lost, the view would be worth it.

It was a good morning for a run, besides.

Nyko gave a loud, whooping cheer and despite his exhaustion he ran without a care in the world. If he had known today was going to turn out so well maybe he wouldn't have woken up cursing so much, or maybe he wouldn't have given that old woman so many dirty looks. Right now he could have kissed her; could have, wouldn't though, a boy had to have standards.

Sajahka by far had better stamina than Nyko, so it didn't surprise him when the other not only began to gain on him, but started to pass him as well. The young fish didn't relent; he kept running, even playfully reaching out to attempt to shove Sajah and knock him over into the sand.

Of course, at this rate, what with all of his wheezing, Nyko was far more likely to fall over but he was going to give it his best shot!

Sajah’s feet battered the sand, so at home with the feel of it and the race of his pulse and adrenaline then that for a moment, he almost forgot he was doing anything else. Then, Nyko’s hand reached, and on contact Sajah was looped back into the race. Nyko’s momentum battered him, and for an instant it was almost but not quite enough to tip him fully off-balance. At the tipping point, however, Sajah opted to twist instead of fighting it, catching on to Nyko’s arm, pulling with the momentum he already had going, and sending them both over, tumbling into the sand.

As they rolled, Sajah pushed, reaching to stop them on the sand with himself overtop his friend, panting downward for a moment, and then, as the situation dawned on him in full, flashing flush cheeked grin, and rolling off of the other boy before anything became too obvious even for Nyko to miss. «You win, I think. Or we could call it a draw?»

Nyko's world seemed to slow down before speeding up all at once. His body weight shifted towards Sajahka, recognition slowly realizing he was being pulled downward. He wasn't fast enough to react against it, and as his body was still in mid run his leg, the further one away from Sajah, lurched forward as the other dug more firmly into the sand before both were inevitably pulled out from under him.

The next thing Nyko knew they were rolling in the sand, and he was aware of dropping the coin purse, but thankfully Sajah pulled them to a stop before they went too far. Once he gained his bearing he could see it out of his peripheral which took the worries right out of Nyko.

Laying on his back in the hot sand, chest working hard to pull in air and a healthy flush mixing with the sweat on his skin, Nyko looked straight up at Sajahka. His hair had come undone; the sweaty, disheveled strands laying both on and around his body. Even before Sajahka pulled away Nyko was laughing again; this time more breathless than before, but no less hearty.

"I'll take the draw."
He reached out for Sajah's hand and squeezed it, lolling his head in the sand to look at his friend. His eyes were practically glowing a warm, molten amber. "Where do you want to go first?"
PostPosted: Thu Mar 09, 2017 1:23 am

Nyko was a sight in any state. Just following a night of far-more-scandalous-than-he-was-used-to activity, however, Sajah’s mind was especially vulnerable to the view of him strewn onto his back, flushed and breathless with his hair tossed about like a disheveled nymph. Tempting as it had been, it really was far too dangerous to remain atop him, so he settled for his current perch, ears heating all the further when Nyko’s hand squeezed his.

The sun and sporadic exercise were easy enough to blame, he supposed. It was harder to blame away the nervous heat that stuttered up his throat his throat and bunched there, holding his breath fast for a moment when Nyko’s gaze held his.

Where…?

“Ah.” He blinked and dipped his gaze before cocking his head and standing. Stepping over Nyko, he fetched the coin purse, and then moved back, standing over his friend with one foot to either side of him in the sand as he hefted its weight assessingly. One, two, three… One by one, he dropped coins lightly onto Nyko’s chest. They seemed to come in three main sizes and colors and he could guess the value scale, but wasn’t sure how far exactly the coin would go in this particular market. Still, he took what he considered to be a good workable starting point—enough to cover ‘something nice’ that would satisfy Nyko without leaving them scarce going forward—and then cinched the bag shut. «Anywhere you want.»

He stepped to the side of the other boy. «Anything for you.» And he held out a hand to help him up, flashing teeth.

The Only Black Uke

Nyko brought one knee up closer to his chest and flexed the other, spreading his toes out wide to wriggle them in the sunlight. It felt remarkably good not to be standing on bamboo shoots anymore, with the little edges digging into the tender flesh of his sole. Of course he remained ignorant to how his actions may have come across to Sajahka; it never crossed the boys mind that there might be more than friendship between them, thus his rather provocative posture.

His honeyed eyes watched the coin purse bounce a little in Sajah's hands before coins, glorious coins, rained down on him from above. Some of them he didn't recognize; his master's only ever had the larger ones, the shinier bits, but some of these looked a little smaller. Surely they all carried the same weight in the marketplace?

He picked up each coin that was dropped, placed them in the palm of his hand before taking Sajahka's with the other. "Then we'll go North. We can go through Jauhar and go into Zena; I've heard they're swimming in gold, but first we'll need to hire some help. My voice is all well and good, but a band would be better. And you'll need more hands to steal with."

Oh, that kind of travel.

Sajah had thought Nyko meant his question in regards to where to head shopping, but apparently bigger things were on his mind. He grunted as he took Nyko’s hand, helping him up, but listening closely when it came to where he intended to head. Sajah was leery about Jauhar at best. The sprawling fungal metropolis stretched for miles—miles, and miles, further than could be seen across even an open end endless expanse of desert, but black with shadow and knotted with trees. He had never been outside of Oba prior to now, but he didn’t imagine that particular location pleasantly. They knew nothing of the environment, how to live there, had no contacts, and so far as Sajah understood it, the only things to find there besides toxic wildlife were tribes of moon people and a race of women who sported a reputation for being even more xenophobic, genocidal, and entitled than their Oban masters before now.

Zena, however, sounded at least manageable, and likely did have sizable stores of wealth if they could find the clothes to keep them from becoming freshly iced seafood. Tale and Sauti were also workable. Sajah actually quite liked Matori, himself. But that wasn’t on the list, and since ‘north’ of them was Sauti and Zena (and not Jauhar, by any stretch of at least Sajah’s understanding of their geographic location), it seemed agreeable enough overall.

«North,» he agreed. Just to be clear. «North is good.»

A band of more than just the two of them presented issues of its own—he trusted no one, and had minimal faith in the untapped talent of Matori’s shoreline, just waiting to be inspired into showing itself for a troupe audition. But there was no denying that adding to their ranks would likely lower personal dangers to themselves overall with there being safety and numbers. And perhaps some of Nyko’s hand-selected friends—newly-hires?—band mates?—would know something about the land his friend wanted to travel through.

Just not Jauhar. Since they were going north. Hopefully.

«How many? You could hold a contest. Have…» What did one do, to pick performing act teammates? «…interviews.»

The Only Black Uke

Nyko took great care to brush the sand off his skin, especially since the better part of it refused to flee. Perhaps the sweat helped keep it in place, and as frustrated as he was becoming with it the boy decided to pick his battles and drop the futile effort.

"Though I suppose if you'd rather not go North we could always go South to Yael-" He didn't suppose that the religious nutters with the glowing eyes would have much in the way of coin or valuables to plunder, but anything would be better than going back to Oba.

At least, until he was filthy stinking rich.

He continued to walk, though at a much slower, more leisurely pace. "Auditions. That's the word you're looking for." Nyko said pointedly, turning on his heel to walk in reverse so he could keep looking at Sajah. The move allowed his hair to twist around him freely, blowing around his shoulders and upper torso when the wind picked up.

"We'll need at least a few musicians, possibly someone who can do backup vocals. We can start spreading the word and hold them...within a week? That should be enough time to round up the local talent."
