Sherry wondered how much lava lamps cost for a moment, then decided it didn't matter. Mark was alright, she'd likely help him out even if she didn't feel like she owed him. Cash would work, right?

Sherry stared at the next couple of texts. Who was Carl? Did he name his roaches? Surely not, especially since he was asking for coloring books. Text from Sherry Sure. I guess I can do that. Tomorrow then. ---------------------- Time skip ---------------------- The next day, Sherry showed up at the Death Office with some blank paper and coloring pencils. "So who is Carl?"

"Me," said the only occupant in the room. Either the Death lead had a kid, or Mimsy and Gale had a kid, or maybe someone just liked making underage golems of said lead. He was currently sitting in Mark's workspace, a small table on the side, rifling through a few papers that clearly looked like mission reports. "What's this Halloween thing - isn't it a little too early for the holidays?"

"Nice to meet you, Carl." Politeness first, of course. Well. And saying it gave her time to contemplate just who Carl was. He certainly looked familiar. Had to be someone's relative...Maybe. "Um," how did he not know what Halloween was? "It's a place." Sherry glanced around looking for any sign of Mark or even the Death lead, terrifying as that thought might be. They just had some random kid in here who didn't know what Halloween was? "Where are you from, Carl?"

"Here," he said vaguely, trying to place the paper exactly back in the pile of where he had found it. A pause, and a little obsessively, he began to break the piles of paper down and stack them a little neater. "Where are you from?"
A pause. "Wait. You're not the 'hot date'," air quotes, "he was talking about earlier are you?"

Sherry raised an eyebrow as she watched him mess with the papers. Here? That was not helpful. It was possible he didn't remember things... or couldn't tell her - classified stuff maybe? "I'm from Wisconsin. But I've been here for a few years." That was relative, of course. She'd spent some time off island recently, too. Maybe that was when Carl had arrived. "Huh?" Sherry blinked at the 'hot date' question. "Me? Uh," for a moment, Sherry didn't have a reply. Her a hot date? "Mark said that? He probably says that about any girl." Sherry was reminding herself as much as anything. It was Mark, after all. "Look, I brought some paper and pencils. Mark said you like to color." He hadn't in those words, but Sherry assumed.

"He probably does," sighed the trainee, the agreement not exactly any self-confidence booster. He had already finished stacking an entire pile and was working on the second one. "Wisconson sounds nice. Is it far from here?"
Upon the colouring comment, he suddenly paused, small stacks of around five to ten papers wedged between his fingers as he tried to group things by time. "I'm not five years old you don't need to babysit me, nobody does." A sigh. "I couldn't leave even if I wanted to."

Sherry frowned at Carl's agreement, not entirely sure how it made her feel. So, she was glad when Carl asked her about her old home. "Oh, yeah. It was nice. It's practically on the other side of the North American continent. Pretty far I suppose." Her tone was oddly musing, almost nostalgic. Sherry raised her eyebrow again. "I can see you're not five." She didn't say that Mark had asked her to 'watch him' which in Sherry's experience did mean 'babysit'. "What do you mean you can't leave? Like, the room?"

"No, the island," it was news to him that this 'island' was quite far away from North America, which he for some reason remembered, and this frankly was becoming Very Bad News, "I can't leave the island. I've tried but they said I'd die. Or Mark did. And Rep."
Despite claiming to not be five, he had picked up one of the pencil crayons, an orange one, and was just aimlessly drawing a large circle with it over and over. "What's it like outside - is it - is it as bad as they say?"

"I see," Sherry frowned in thought. So they had him here to keep him alive? Okay, Sherry could roll with that. She thought about asking Carly 'why', but he didn't seem to be the most up-to-date on his situation. He was a kid after all. Or a teenager, but that was still a kid, right? She watched start to draw his orange circle. "It's, well," she paused for a moment, thinking. "There are things out there that can and will try to kill you. We can protect you as long as you're here, though." Sherry sighed. "It's not all bad, of course. Not all the time. There's a lot more sunlight, for one thing. The food is pretty amazing, too. But sometimes the danger outweighs the good." Which had to be why Carl was here. Her eyes were on his art, odd as it was. "How long have they been protecting you here, Carl?" Sherry was sure Mark and Rep knew what they were talking about, but it was still very, very odd.

"The food is terrible and I hate Pocky," said Carl suddenly, looking way more despondent than usual, "And if this is sunlight, I really don't want to see what it looks like when it gets dark."
"I dunno, I guess I've been here a couple of days?" He paused to think about that, and then held up the drawing. It was a circle, but it was also a very crudely drawn circle that ended with wings, and spines. "What is this by the way?" Before Sherry could answer what on earth his unusual drawing was, he supplied helpfully, "It's following you."
