The door clicked open as Melvin walked in. Camp was well and good enough, but sharing a cabin with Harrison and Rep turned out to be ......louder and more uncomfortable than he originally had thought.
Not wanting to wait all night just to go back to the cabin just to sleep in relative quiet, he took the portal out and came to at least one place that was a little less awkward to sleep at.
Moving to the couch, Melvin eased in and laid face down into the cushions and let out a defeated little groan.

A couple of minutes later, the door opened again, and Jordan came in, dropping his mission bag beside the door and shrugging out of his coat. He hung it up on the hook and turned, only then noticing that there was an occupant on the couch. "Oh, hey," he said. "You're back earlier than expected."

"What?" Jordan pulled the hair tie out of his hair, releasing the short ponytail he'd been wearing and running a hand through his hair with an absentminded grimace. He bent down to untie his boots and kick them off. "Want some tea? I won't be up too much later. I assume nothing too catastrophic happened at the camp?"

He turned his head over to watch Jordan. "Not much I guess. Lawr posting lies on Twitter. We had to talk." He breathed out, still recalling the conversation with a bitter taste. "And sharing a cabin with Rep and Harrison. They don't know much about .....restricting themselves." He said politely.
Pushing up, he sat and rubbed at his face before picking the googles off the table. "I'll heat up the water. You just got here." And it was his place technically.
Melvin got up and moved to the kitchen. "I thought you might be already in bed by now."

"Both of those, uh, situations sound pretty awkward," Jordan said neutrally. The second part explained why Melvin was back here, anyway. He could understand how sharing a cabin might get uncomfortable.
"I'm just going to change real quick, then," he said, and padded into the bedroom. Among the rustling of fabric he called back, "I had to go take some stuff to another base, got called up late."

Grabbing the kettle, he filled it with water and turned on the hotplate to heat it up, taking out the various teas and two cups that were typically always picked out. It wasn't like he had been here for a month, but he already at least knew the layout of the kitchen. Being avid coffee drinkers or overworkers, he also knew where the tea was kept.
That done, he stood beside the kitchen door in order to hear Jordan better.
"You do a lot of errands like that?" He wasn't exactly sure what all Jordan worked on most days, just that he often was out. It felt more that he occupied a space and passed by Jordan as he lived out his days.
His hand went to his phone, debating looking at Twitter again despite knowing what little good it would do him. After a few seconds more of resistance, he checked it.

"Yeah, I sorta fell into the habit of running stuff out to people when I was free." Jordan emerged from the bedroom in sweatpants and a faded t-shirt, hiding a yawn behind his hand. "I didn't have anything to do this evening so I said I'd do the errand. Good to have done some stuff for people once in a while, you know? There's a few people I can call on for minor favors if I need them. That kind of thing."
He took note of what Melvin was doing. "Any new and interesting drama as of five minutes ago?"

He jerked the phone back down and tapped it with his thumb, turning the screen off. "Uh....no. Not actually. Just....wanted to see that nothing blew up since I left." Cause it could. Always.
"Kinda hard to keep tabs on people when....you're not there or around them anymore." Which meant Lawr was free to do and say whatever he wanted without any sort of check.
"You were saying - helping people. I tend to do that with whoever needs something finished but needs to leave. I thought camp would actually be a bit busier but it doesn't feel much different than being here. The food is at least better." Though, if he had to compare it to Lawr's culinary cooking and high standards, it still didn't meet the standard he was used to a month ago.
His thumb moved over the screen nervously before he placed it in his pocket. "What kind of tea did you want?"

"Valid concern," Jordan said with a sympathetic grimace; he was equally well aware of how fast something could blow up on the twitter feed. He nodded to the comment about keeping tabs on people. "Knowing where they are is different from being there." For now, he was ignoring his own phone. He'd plugged it in and he didn't want to get sucked into anything.
"Yeah. In between missions and normal duties, of course. Helps pass the time, too. The camp food's good? Who'd they get in to make it?" he asked. His own kitchen was minimal, and he usually ate in the cafeteria. Good food was a subject of interest.
"Something herbal, so it won't keep me awake," he requested.

"Yeah. Way better than on the island. I think a lot of hunters eagerly volunteered because you can hear them talking while they make it."
He went for camomile and placed the teabags inside the mugs, cutting the heat off and pouring the water in. "More than most. Lawr needs someone to watch him because he doesn't realize when something puts himself and others in jeopardy. It can make clear, logical sense and because of that he feels like he is making a valid, sane course of action. He also - fixates on ideas and things. I don't think Rodney has enough of a thick skin to keep that all in line."
He watched the water turn dark and offered a mug to Jordan.
"Speaking of...I met with Rep in the infirmary. He got really pissed at me for being here."

"Must be different than the usual slackers. Maybe I should arrange to go to camp." Jordan looked thoughtful.
He sat on the arm of the couch while Melvin prepared the tea and listened. "Sounds like he definitely needs extra watching," he said, and kept his unease at the idea to himself. Why had Lawrence been recruited? His problems seemed to go deeper than many of the strange people on the island. Not that Jordan hadn't suspected that. He still wasn't sure how much criticism of Lawrence Melvin would accept, even now that he'd had his eyes opened to some degree.
He accepted the mug, but what Melvin had to say next made him scowl. "Did he? What the hell is he thinking? It's not like he has anything to do with my space any more."

Melvin moved his tea bag around by the string, moving it up and down as the water turned amber.
"I'm not sure. I didn't really know too much about you three. Maybe he was just....concerned. I mean, has any other people been sleeping at your apartment?"

Jordan rubbed his thumb along the curve of the mug handle, frowning. "Concerned? Probably more like jealous." He sighed. "He has trouble controlling his jealousy. You've seen it, I'm sure, he threatens anyone he thinks might be looking sideways at Harrison. I haven't had anyone staying over, no," he continued. "I've ... kept to myself."
That was its own problem. He'd kept to himself partly due to a bitter kind of exhaustion with other people, partly, if he was truthful, due to that jealousy. It was flattering, in a way, and it was proof that he was still wanted in some way. It probably wasn't healthy, he admitted to himself ruefully.
