Name: Caliban
Age: 28
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Craft: Fishercraft
Rank: Journeyman
Location: Islands south of Western
Physical Description: Cal is tall with toned arms and muscles from years of sailing. He has brown curly hair with slightly coppery tones to it and a beard of the same color that often grows out on long trips out at sea, making him look much older than he is (there can seem to be up to a ten turn difference when he shaves). He has light brown eyes and soft, handsome features, even when frowning impatiently, which he often is.
Personality: Though once a happy and laid back child, Cal's personality is a lot more severe now. He often acts as the responsible one of the group, more serious about things than his light-hearted friends. He might seem a little bad tempered at times, telling them to be serious or stop playing around, but he's frequently the one to get them (read: Neri) out of trouble as well. At work, he can be harsh as well. He demands perfection from his crew because he knows anything less could get someone killed.

He cares deeply about those close to him, has a strong protective instinct, and a brave spirit. Danger means nothing to him if someone's life could be on the line. He'd risk anything to bring those he's charged with protecting back safely, and never puts personal pride or personal gain in front of that. He is usually the strictest when it comes to abandoning ships or cargo if it seems too risky. He takes a lot of responsibility onto himself when it comes to the safety of his crew, or their group at large, for that matter. When things go wrong, he beats himself up about it endlessly, and it takes a lot of reassurance from his friends to bring him out of it again.

Though uptight and severe when it comes to his work, Cal has retained his early laid back nature when it comes to other matters. He is relaxed when it comes to regulations and decorum, and has a modest, humble nature. Once a mission is over and everyone is safely on shore, Cal relaxes a lot. He knows how to have fun, though he'll still be the one taking care of everyone at the end of the night, most likely.
History: Friends with Neri, [Adoptable1] and [Adoptable2] since childhood, Cal grew up in the same small Sea Hold on a lonely island to the southeast of western continent. He is the oldest of several siblings, from a long line of boat makers. Like his friends, and more or less everyone on the island, Cal grew up fishing and sailing almost as soon as he had learned to walk. His mother worked as a boat maker like her parents, and his father was a fisherman. Their children were encouraged to go into either profession.

Though their lives were mostly peaceful, the increase in piracy in the area made it harder and harder to venture safely from their small island. When Cal was 14, his father went out on a trip to trade goods with a neighboring island. There were reports of pirates along that route, so when the boat was late coming back, people started to worry. Cal stayed up all night waiting for the ship's return, only to see its burning carcass drift into view before crumbling into the sea. They sent out rescue boats to save who they could, but there were very few survivors, and Cal's father was not one of them.

After that, he became a lot more serious, worrying a lot about helping to support his mother and young siblings. He studied even harder than before and started picking up sailing quickly. When a queen rider was isolated at a Weyrhold near their island, Cal stood for the same clutch as his friends, but did not impress. Though he was offered the chance to return to the Weyr or Weyrhold as a candidate, Cal preferred to remain on the island near his friends, his family, and his craft. He remained close to his friends, sailing from their island to the nearby Weyrhold most evenings and restdays, volunteering to bring supplies to the weyrling group from the neighboring islands. After they graduated, Cal worked with those that stayed, perfecting the skill of fishing alongside dragons.

Shortly after Cal walked the tables, he worked with his friends to get a boat between them and set out on their own. Despite it being a focus of his craft, Cal was in favor of the switch from fishing to defending other ships from piracy. Despite not having a dragon, Cal remains an indispensable part of the group, captaining their largest ship, the Derecho, providing support to the riders of their group.

Cal is somewhat anti-Weyr when it comes to politics. Though he doesn't blame them for the people who died due to thread (they were caught as unawares as the rest of then), he doesn't believe they can have it both ways. Either they save everyone, or they don't have the right to proclaim themselves Pern's sole defenders. That said, he's more than happy for his friends to stop fighting thread and just stick to what they know: fighting pirates and rescuing people at sea. They had enough danger in their life to begin with, without adding thread to it. Whatever the group ends up deciding, however, he will support them 100%.

Looks great but I'm confused about the "either they save everyone or they don't have the right to proclaim themselves Pern's sole defenders".

I don't quite get where that comes from and where he'd get that view? I'm totally fine with him being anti-Weyr, I just don't understand if that's a misunderstanding of how the Weyr functions and its intentions or something else. gaia_star Since that seems to be his biggest pain point about the Weyr, I just want to make sure we're all on the same page. gaia_star

Hey. Sorry.. Yeah, that wasn't really explained well.

I guess his thought process is: they're saying no one else can fight thread but hthem, but then they're not able to fight thread everywhere (or weren't at first) and he basically thinks they should let other groups help to fight thread if they want to, without having to return to a Weyr.

Does that make sense?

That's fine, though I will state all the Weyrs are covering all of Pern. So while he might have concerns about the first Fall, which caught everyone unawares, they're getting the job done now.

Approved! yum_cupcake

He's mostly holding a grudge about the first Fall, yes.

Does that include fighting thread over open water, though? When we discussed it before you said they wouldn't. Granted, I think that's a perfectly reasonable thing for Weyrs to do (it'd be a huge space to cover for a miniscule chance of people being caught in the Fall) but being a sailor, he's a little biased and might consider that a failure in their part.

I was talking to Fable about it a few nights ago, and we had a big discussion about what the old Pernese folks did when Thread was falling. Since none of the books went into it we figured that Captains would keep Threadfall charts handy, and likely be in communication with dolphins and neighboring landbound Holds via firelizard fairly regularly.

The responsibility is more on the Captains having a plan in place than just expecting dragonriders to save them.

Ships that could come to port and take cover for Fall likely did and that was and is probably a Captains duty -- to keep their people safe and get their business worked around the Threadfall patterns. Those who can't or get caught unexpectedly might try to outrun it or try to find safety on an uncharted island, but that probably had less of a success rate. Since Thread doesn't fall in every location at the same time, depending where leading and trailing edge of Thread happens to be, some ships might be able to maneuver out of it until it passes. They also could possibly send an SOS via dolphin and firelizard. If there was time enough to get actual locations and a good visualization a Flight from any Weyr could probably try to defend the ship/fleet. This is probably a last resort, though, since there usually aren't very good visual markers over the ocean so getting coordinates to appear Between could be tricky if not impossible. So those who go out to sea kind of do so at their own risk. Worst comes to worst, sailors might have to abort and abandon their ships.

I can't see the Weyrs being able to defend all the oceans, since Thread drowns over water. I suspect they fight over water so far from short to save any docked or waiting ships, as well as cover any islands they know about, but deep-ocean stuff is a trickier matter, and its up to the captains to keep Threadfall in mind when they travel.

You guys are great at asking questions that I hadn't thought anything about.

So long story short, your poor Caliban does have valid concerns. But there is likely a small responsibility on the Captains to be aware. Kind of like how Menolly got swept up by brown Branth when they found her trying to run back to her cave. Even though the riders were covering as best they could, it was considered very peculiar to have anyone out during Threadfall. Holds boarded up, and got all their people inside during Thread days. And those who were out or forgot, well, on their heads be it.

I think in Echoes of Pern there's going to be a steep learning curve on getting back to those old habits. yum_cupcake If those in the shop go back to those old ways at all.
