Being almost thirteen came with a set of privileges, or so Alise liked to think. For one, her mother had very reluctantly been starting to let her have more of a say in what to wear, for one, though jeans seemed to still be off the table. For another, Alise was finally starting to be granted some independence to do things on her own, like to be able to visit certain shops on her own, though only local ones, and only for a certain amount of time. Of course, usually, Alise was able to bargain her way into bending these restrictions a little... usually. Today, Alise had set out to check the shops to see if any still had clearance candy canes for sale this late after the holidays. She knew that technically, Etoile could probably be sated with just the little candy hearts that were starting to be sold with the Valentine's candy, but she always went out of her way to provide only the best for the little cat; after all, who knew what could happen if she didn't? No, she had to continue to win the Mauvian's loyalties, to ensure that she continued to live with her and only her. Ultimately, her searches turned up only the flavored candy canes that nobody ever really bought, the ones that were flavored like Jolly Ranchers or Lifesavers, those kind. Still, they were cheap, and Alise was pretty certain Etoile wouldn't mind... ... But then she saw it. Among the plush animals on sale for Valentine's, there was a giant pink plush rabbit, with a price within her candy budget. While Alise always claimed to be too old for stuff animals, and no longer held tea parties with her toy rabbits as often as she did when she was little, she couldn't help but be drawn to the doll. Well, hopefully Etoile wouldn't mind if she turned up with a few less boxes of candy than usual. Now the question was, how was she going to get back home without anyone she knew seeing the rabbit? She had a reputation to uphold, after all.

Amaris was generally given to clumsiness, although in her own mind, it was some form of cute. It wasn't so much that she was clumsy, persay -- it was more that she was easily distracted onto anything interesting, and today, that was somewhere between Twitter posts on her phone and a giant pink rabbit.She didn't even necessarily want it, but if someone had to own it or it died a terrible helldeath in the garbage dump, she figured it'd probably be her. There was a certain je ne sais quoi to a huge, obnoxiously cotton-candy pink plush rabbit -- not that she knew what that even really meant? It was French. Probably. What it actually meant was debatable, because she'd taken three years of Spanish and not remembered a single one, so French was entirely out of the question -- she was so caught up in her own thoughts that she almost hipchecked Alise, and her eyes went wide as she drew the connection. "You and this rabbit are perfect for each other."

By all accounts, Amaris was someone Alise considered to be 'cool', mostly because Amaris was the oldest person she knew that was also like her, that she could count as a friend. Equally, by all accounts, this also meant that Amaris was the very last person Alise wanted seeing her carrying around a giant plush rabbit, and a look of abject horror formed on her face as she realized just who had just nearly bumped into her and was now speaking to her. " It's not for me," Alise very quickly tried to cover up. (It totally was for her.)

Amaris' grin could be described as 'impish', if you were given to that sort of thing; but she pocketed her phone and put her hands on her hips, looking at Alise. " Sure, little lady. Who's it for, then, the goblin who lives under your bed who must be fed a steady diet of sacrifices?" She clicked her tongue. "Shame, that. Mine's eaten all of my extra pens, 'cause that's the only thing that explains how they all go missin' all the time."

"There isn't a goblin under my bed," Alise said defensively, "there's a demon, and he doesn't eat plush rabbits." "Ghosts probably took your pens," she added, "they like playing pranks on people like that. They stole a lot of our candy last month." Actually, that was Etoile, but the official story she had given her mother was that it had been ghastly elves, wandering spirits that had stolen the candy canes of the Christmas tree for no particular reason.

"If I was the demon under your bed, I'd eat all the plush rabbits I wanted," Amaris teased. "And ghosts, huh? Maybe it's the ghosts of all those snowbuns that were running around last month." She shrugged. "Maybe they're comin' back for revenge cause I squashed a bunch of them after they bit me. Kill or be killed, y'know."

" You killed them?" Alise accused, horrified, "You killed the snow rabbits!?" Forget being caught carrying around a giant plush rabbit. Alise was now shocked to hear that Amaris had squished the snow bunnies she had been trying to catch. She wasn't sure they could still be friends.

"Well, I caught some of them first to study," Amaris frowned, "and then they bit me?? And I got the flu for like a week and a half, and it sucked. Alise, they were horrible creatures of snow and there was no kindness in their hearts, it was a mercy to do what I did."

Most people would probably concede that they were wrong and that Amaris had a point. However, Alise wasn't most people; for one, she disliked admitting she was wrong. "Rabbits can't give people the flu," she insisted, refusing to let this one go, "And you probably scared them, that's why they bit you." Alise couldn't believe Amaris had managed to catch some of the snow rabbits and then just killed them. It just... was so unforgivable.

Amaris took an overdramatic long-suffering breath, her fingers crossed, and leaned back to crack her shoulders so hard it was audible. "Hey, Alise, they were magic rabbits made out of snow and they had nothing but murder in their hearts. I studied." A grimace. "Well, uh, I got roped into studying them and got bit in the process, and then I had chills and shakes for a week."

Alise wanted to continue to argue, to continue to accuse Amaris of being an evil snow rabbit murderer, but she also didn't want to be caught out in public carrying a giant plush rabbit by anyone else she knew. And the longer she stood out here arguing, the higher the chance someone from school could walk by. (It didn't mean she forgave Amaris, though.) "I wanted to catch one," Alise finally said, "Or a few. They would have been cool minions to have if I could train them."

Amaris huffed out an overdramatic, exaggerated sigh, that went on for at least a few seconds longer than it really had any reason to. "They would've melted in the summer anyways. Want me to buy you the rabbit? Or like, at least, carry it? I'm crazy strong. I could carry three of you."

"... Can you do both?" Alise asked, after a pause; if Amaris wanted to redeem herself, this could be the first step. "'Cause, I mean, if you do both, then I can buy Etoile her candy, too," she added, thinking.

"...I can do both," Amaris acquiesced, and her put-out look was mostly an act. "Like I said, I could lift three of you -- and so could my bank account."That bit was a lie, but nobody needed to know.

"You're the best," Alise told Amaris, though as to whether that was true or not was up for debate. "And uh, you can't tell anyone about this, okay? No one from school knows I collect plush rabbits, and I wanna keep it that way."
