Sandlot Bambino was ready. Today was the day! The sun was shining, not a cloud hung in the sky, and it was not too hot or too cold. It was a perfect morning for a game. He was so pumped he even arrived to the field early to warm up before any of the other phonies arrived. Ah yeah, he was gonna rule today!
Until he noticed he forgot his hat…
Bambino should be running around and doing his workouts but instead he was just staring into his sports bag hoping it would magically appear. When that didn’t work he began to dig for it. Maybe it was under his water bottle? No. How about hiding under his snacks? No. What about wedged inside his towel? Negative. Before he lost hope he grabbed the bag and dumped all the contents onto the grass in hopes that it would be there annnnnnnnnd it was not.
How could he forget his hat?! Bambino whipped his head up and squinted up at the sun. Eesh. He loved these days but he couldn’t really see anything with the sun glaring down on him. Maybe he could fly home really fast before anyone else arrived? But just as he was about to take off the rest of his team started filing in.
The colt knew he was going to have a difficult time playing without his trusty hat to shield him from the sun. But if he wanted to be the best ball player he could be he’d have to try!

The sun was far too bright today. It beat down with an oppressive heat, seemed to spike everyone regardless of their angle toward it or unhelpfully cast a shadow on everything if you tried to turn away. Normally shadows were good, quite good Dark Water would say -- perhaps even the best -- but the shade of a tree was far different from the shape of her own phony body getting in the way of reading. Unfortunately, everywhere was like this today and unless cloud cover decided to creep in there would be no relief until the sun decided to go to sleep. Were it so easy, the dark filly would have chosen somewhere else to relax and be alone. That hope was dashed anyway as a nearby baseball diamond was taken up by a large group of foals eagerly readying themselves for a game. Dark Water huffed, fluffing some of her hair into her face with a breath.

“Auuuuugh….what am I going to do?” Bambino moaned as he squinted up at the sun. His determination was already wavering as he started tossing the ball back and forth to a teammate. With each catch and toss he cursed himself for forgetting his hat. Sure, he could probably wear another teammates or an extra but none of them fit him just right.
Soon he was up to bat for a quick round of practice. Bambino gulped as he looked out onto the baseball diamond where his pitcher stood. No matter how much he squinted and moved the angle of his head, the sun glared down on the field juuuuuust the right amount to make it almost impossible to see. So now he was hot, smelly, and batting blind. Definitely not good.
Suddenly he heard the whizz of a baseball fly past his head. Shoot! He didn’t even see that one coming! Bambino quickly tried to reassert his stance and try to hit the ball again. But when he swung his next mighty swing at the careening ball, his bat just met air. He was supposed to be the star of his team! Not some no hit loser! When he heard the third throw Bambino just went for it. His heart sang with joy when the beautiful ‘WHACK’ of ball against bat echoed in his ears…and then came the shouts for someone to look out.
It was a runaway ball! And as Bambino raised his hoof up to block out the sun he could see it was heading straight towards a dark filly not too far away. Oooooh no.

With just the right touch of stubbornness, Dark Water decided to at least attempt further reading where she sat; it involved a lot of squatting, squinting, and just a bit of shuffling, but she managed to get a handful of words read in roughly the same amount of time it would have taken to write an entire paragraph.
Neither her own shadow nor that of the tree was cooperating on one side, and on the other there no shadows present at all. So what, then, was the dark thing in the corner of her eye?
She scarcely had time to react. Dark Water reared back so hard she nearly gave herself whiplash as a baseball came hurtling out of the sky and collided with the center of her book with a dull thud. It bounced with a high arch, then rolled just a foot or so away from her across the grass. If she hadn’t pulled away in time, it could have easily broken her nose -- it certainly put a dent into the spine of her book.
As soon as the baseball fell motionless, Dark Water turned to stare at the field with almost robotic precision. Her gaze zeroed in on the one at bat in short order. Picked from the crowd, the filly’s eyes did not leave him even as she got up onto her hooves and took the ball into her mouth to carry over. Narrowed eyes and a tense posture carried her across the field and finally to Sandlot Bambino. She stopped in front of him, locked eyes, and let the ball drop to the ground between them.
“You missed.”

“Uhhhh hey! Hey! HEY!” But Bambino’s shouts must have been carried away by the wind because the little filly did not move out of the way. It didn’t look like she even noticed that in a second her face would be introduced to a baseball. At least he tried...
The rest was like a scene on the slow-mo cam that announcers laughed at when the game was over. His ball soared gracefully through the air, like a magnificent eagle, and collided perfectly with the poor filly’s head. If he was watching this on the big screen his gawking would be replaced by laughing.
Now that the ball had met its target it was time for Bambino to choose what he was going to do. Option one: he could run the other way. Option two: he could go over and apologize. Option three: he could continue to act like a statue and just hope she’d go away.
As tempting as option one and three were, his mother had taught him that two was always the best. He had to be the big stallion...no matter how utterly embarrassing this was.
He didn’t even get five paces in front of himself before he was face to face with the girl. Boy she was fast.
“Um...uh..y-yeah. I noticed. Looks like you did too.”
Hey stupid, that wasn’t the way to talk to someone you just beaned.
“Erm...I mean, sorry I accidently hit you.”

Dark Water frowned as the colt stammered. None of his team, or even their opponents, seemed intent to step into the situation just yet. Judging by how locked up the batter was, no doubt the others were similarly mortified.
“Did I?” she asked, only half rhetorical. The jet black filly stepped to the side and began circling around Sandlot Bambino like a vulture scrutinizing its prey. “I’d say mine was a lucky break.”
As she came back around to face him, Dark Water tapped the ball away from them with her hoof. She took up her position directly in front of Bambino and looked him dead in the eye. “What’s your excuse?”

“Well not that lucky,” Bambino watched the girl as she began to circle him. She resembled a shark and he was the poor guy floating on a shoddy raft. But Bambino was not one to just be eaten. “you still got hit.”
He reached for the ball but she quickly pushed it out of his reach. Honest to goodness he felt bad for hitting her with a stray ball but now? At this rate his guilt was soon to be nonexistent. Maybe her sour mood was just a magnet for bad luck.
Bambino clicked his tongue and squinted between her and the sun, “Look up and you’ll see. The bright thing in the sky is messing with my game. I can’t see a thing.”

At this, she shook her head. It must have looked that way for certain at the distance he stood, but thankfully the ball didn’t hit her directly -- heck it didn’t even clip her. “Not me. You might have killed my book, though.” Dark Water glanced back to her poorly shaded and equally poor choice of seating arrangement and sighed. He did apologize, however awkwardly it fell out of his mouth, and in all honesty it was far too hot to pick a fight over an accident.
This time, when she spoke, her tone was far less accusatory. She was mellowing to a more collected demeanor and the heat of the day was aiding in melting away the tension she felt despite it being quite an unfriendly presence otherwise.
“I suppose the sun’s a nuisance no matter who you are.” The dull filly glanced around the area, particularly at the other players on the field. This stray colt seemed to be the only one without two key things she could only hazard a guess must have been important to the game. “And you don’t have your hat.”

“Oh really? Phew.” Bambino was still a little annoyed but he was happy he didn’t hit her. He must have shut his eyes without even realizing it at the assumed moment of impact. Now he looked like a goof but maybe that would earn him some much-needed sympathy points? Chill her out a little?
“I hope it had a good long book life?” That didn’t even make sense! Bambino was seriously off his game today and he was feeling worse and worse by the minute. It was hot, muggy, and he could barely see. For a game that he loved and felt so passionate about today was not his day.
Bambino huffed and wiped the sweat from his forehead, “It definitely is. Normally I stand a chance against it but…”
She finished his sentence for him and he could only laugh.
The baseball slugger looked around at his teammates who were all sporting their hats. “Yeah. I forgot mine and nobody else’s can fit my head just right. It’s a bummer and I’m playing horribly today.” Normally Bambino wasn’t one to lay it all out on the table in front of some chick he didn’t know but he was in the process of melting into goo. “I love this sport, I love hitting it out of the park, but today, as you just witnessed, I’m swinging blind.”

Bambino’s comment about her book’s lifespan only earned him a raise of an eyebrow. It wasn’t just his baseball game that was off, that was for sure; at least, Dark Water hoped this wasn’t how often he typically struck out.
“So I see,” she confirmed softly. With another sigh, she passed a glance back to his team once again. Yes, the hat was an important part of blocking out the sun but it wasn’t the only factor. Dark Water sat on haunches and lifted a hoof to her chin in thought.
“I might have an idea.” Dark Water tilted her head at Sandlot Bambino and pressed both hooves to the dirt. “If you promise not to pelt any other innocent books today, I might be able to help you out.” There was a playful tone not present before, however slight given her clearly moody disposition. It seemed she wasn’t being quite so standoffish anymore, now that the initial scare had passed and she was convinced it wasn’t an intentional strike.

“You do?” Sandlot Bambino relaxed as her tone eased. She didn’t seem angry anymore and actually a little nice? Maybe things were looking up for him? Especially if she had an idea how to get him out of this mess. She looked smart and those were always the best kind of phonies to have on your side.
“Heck, I’m up for anything at this point. Whatcha got?”
The colt grinned as he looked between her face and what her hooves were doing. He was curious to know her plan but desperate times call for desperate measures. Bambino wanted to win this game no matter what. He could feel it in his bones that this was gonna be his best yet. It just worked better if he could see what was going on during this soon-to-be great game.

With the colt’s agreement, Dark Water nodded. She stood up and paid one last glance to the rest of the baseball diamond and the other players, then gave Bambino a brief look. “Just a moment.”
There were many things around the park besides trees and a sports field; there were benches, walking gardens, picnic areas, and most important among those were a few small grills attached to the ground so no one could make off with them in the night. Dark Water paced around the area, searching for resources. She thought she could use something here, quite certain actually, and when she came upon a recently used grill still dirty and darkened, she couldn’t help but smirk.
It took a minute or so more than she would have liked, but soon enough the filly returned with a makeshift baggy between her teeth. “Alright, bear with me… and close your eyes.”

Bambino stood quietly as he waited for her to get back. He said his ‘heys’ and ‘sups’ to his teammates as they arrived and milled around warming up for the game. Time was running out and it might have been silly to put all his faith into a girl he just met but oh well. He trusted the filly and that was what he needed to rely on.
His tail actually wagged when she came back. Bambino was that happy to see her and whatever the heck she had in the crood bag.
“Okay, okay.” The pegasus shut his eyes for a moment but just before she could do anything they snapped back open, “Um...this isn’t a prank or anything right? You’re actually gonna help me? This isn’t a trick...right?”
Alright, so he was still a little nervous when push came to shove. She’d have to forgive him for that.

Her hooves dug into the bag, only to pause when Bambino suddenly grew nervous. Dark Water stared at him, a little incredulous but not annoyed. “Just close your eyes,” she replied smoothly and returned her attention to the bag’s contents.
“But no," Dark Water added, “it’s not a trick. I don’t play games.”
Within the bag, she rubbed her hooves together against something that sounded hard -- and maybe a bit crunchy. For several long moments she did this, ignoring the members of Bambino’s team that were growing curious and impatient around them. She looked up to check that his eyes were fully closed before she removed her hooves from the bag; thanks to her naturally dark coloration, they didn’t look any different but, when applied to the colt’s pale face, they left thick dark marks across his cheeks just beneath his eyes. She spread the dark dust carefully, slowly, and did so a handful of times to make sure the application was suitably dark for the amount of light.
Once she finished, Dark Water leaned back to examine her work. It was difficult to tell, but with a subtle tilt of her head there was a ghost of a smile. “Charcoal, if nothing else is available, should work in a pinch.”

Bambino listened to her for a quick moment before he opened his eyes to take a little peek. When he didn’t see what she had in her bag he closed his eyes once more, but not long after he opened them again to take another peek. Obviously he wanted to know what she was up to and by golly he intended to find out!
He didn’t know what she may have cooked up. Maybe this was all some big prank on him by his team? What if she was going to put something gross on him and everyone would laugh?!
Until now Bambino never really worried. Everything usually worked out for him.
Luckily for Dark Water the lad closed his eyes just at the right time for her to apply whatever she had fixed up.
It took even longer for her to apply whatever it was on his face and the whole time Bambino kept hoping it wasn’t anything weird.
“Charcoal?” Bambino’s eyes popped up and he tried to look down at what she had spread across his face. Obviously he couldn’t really see anything, just little glimpse of something dark on his cheeks.
“Huh...okay…” That wasn’t odd at all. “So how does this help?”
