❝ l a y x m e x g e n t l y x i n x the x c o l d x d a r k x e a r t h x . . . ❝ While watching a couple of her friends and a few strangers she's never met before play beer pong, Layla cheered on her best friend's team while she sipped her beer that was honestly horrible but she was in the mood to get drunk so she continued drinking from the can. Looking over at the door when she heard the doorbell ring, Layla's eyes almost popped out of her head when she saw her ex boyfriend with another girl.
It would have been a whole different story if it was just him because they're both still sort of friends, but with another girl? She panicked. Grabbing the first guy's hand she saw, she looked up at the tall male and lifted herself up on her tip toes to whisper in his ear. "My ex boyfriend and a new girl just walked in, could you just go with it?" Layla pleaded to him, hopefully he didn't already have a girlfriend that was here at the party, that would have been a whole new s**t show. He was actually pretty handsome, Layla was proud she picked this guys big hand. "He doesn't even like parties anyways so he'll be gone in like an hour. He most likely only came to show off his new girlfriend." She told the guy she's never seen in her life until just now. Which is surprising because she always shows up to these house parties.
"Also I'm Layla." She smiled at him and went back to watching the game of beer pong and sipping on her beer, still planning on getting s**t faced.

 Why am I even here?
He found himself asking that same question over and over again. He felt out of place - he was too old to be at a party like this! He had absolutely nothing to gain. Most of these people looked at least five years younger than him. Initially, the only reason he had decided to come was because it was his best friend, Brent's, birthday party. Where was his best friend now? Black out drunk in his bed, covered in his own sweat and vomit.
Leaned against the wall with a cold beer clasped in his hand, with his opposite hand dug into the pocket of his dark jeans, Jared released a sigh into his drink before tilting it up for another swing. His eyes were currently concentrated on the beer pong game happening in front of him. Neither teams seemed to be making any progress which elicited a little chuckle from his lips. Amateurs. Jared downed the rest of his drink in one last swig, releasing a bit of a belch into his fist before chucking the empty can into the trash bag nearby.
The male was just about to walk off for another beer when suddenly his hand was grabbed, attracting his attention immediately. Confusion set in following her first statement. "Uhh.." Was all he could get out at the moment, obviously frazzled by the randomness of the request. Oh, god. There was no way he was sober enough for this. Up until that moment he didn't even feel buzzed. It hit him like a ******** brick. Just act normal. You got this. "Right," he said, glancing down at the girl momentarily to see where exactly she was looking. Her ex boyfriend hadn't seemed to notice her yet and for that he was thankful. Jared honestly didn't know if he had the ability to keep up that kind of charade - not like this.
"I'm Jared," he said, momentarily averting his eyes to the beer pong game as well. Their hands were still linked, so he dug his other hand into his jeans pocket once more. "So, uh...how do you know Brent?" He asked casually, hoping that came out right and that he didn't sound like too much of an idiot. If there was anything he hated, it was conversing with strangers while drunk.

Finishing the rest of her beer, she tossed it in the trash can that was near the beer pong table. Looking back over at her ex, he was still distracted at the doorway with one of their mutual friends, when asked how Layla knew Brent, she looked back over to Jared. "My best friend's brother, what about you?" She asked, at that moment the twenty four year old felt the 3 beers she downed starting to affect her.
"Do you want another beer?" Layla questioned then dragged him to the kitchen where all the beer was, it was also a little quieter along with an area that she knew her ex wouldn't come near. He never got up to go get his own beer, he continuously told people to go get him one. "You don't know my ex Daniel, right? If so this would be a little weird." Layla chuckled at herself and grabbed two beers from the fridge. The whole fridge was emptied out and was stuffed with boxes of beer. "How come I've never seen you at one of these parties? I'm here pretty often but this time there is quiet a few random's I've never seen in my life." She asked while handing him the second beer she grabbed.

"Roommates in college," he answered. They soon ended up in the most secluded room of the apartment - the kitchen. He took the booze from Layla's grasp and cracked the tab, jaunting his lips while shaking his head no at her answer. "I've never seen him before in my life," he said, taking a sip of his drink before leaning back against the counter. He felt himself beginning to calm down a little the more they talked. Perhaps he wasn't as drunk as he thought he was and it was all in his head...then again, he did step outside a little while ago for a spliff. Subconsciously, he began to wonder if his eyes were at all red and if the brunette had stared at him long enough to notice...
Layla's question captured his attention once more while bringing a bit of a smirk to his face. "I work a lot," he began. "I'm a tattoo artist and piercer at Hand Of Glory Tattoo, so the hours are pretty long." He admitted with a faint, yet deep laugh (of self-pity) that showed off his perfect pearly whites. Out of the four tattooists working there, people seemed to be attracted to Jared's style the most which therefore made him the most requested artist. Not that he minded - it was just exhausting at times. Jared took another swig of his beer and nodded towards Layla. "So what's your story?"

It was extremely neat, now Layla thought her job was boring. "I think I've heard of that place, that's super cool." She replied and flipped her long dark brown hair behind her back, drinking alcohol always made her cheeks red and her body warm up. "My story? Well I live 30 minutes away from Manhattan in a small apartment, my main job is a photographer and my side job for some extra money is baking. I make like 3 tier cakes and designed cupcakes, stuff like that. It's fun I really like both, but waking up at 5am for good sunlight in the cold sucks sometimes." Layla answered, before taking a big drink from her beer.
"That's pretty much all I really do most days is work, I have a lot of picture days off but on the other days I'm editing the pictures." Layla told the male, looking over at the entrance to the kitchen she noticed her ex walk in with the girl he brought following him like a lost puppy. "Hey Layla, who is this?" Daniel said with a smirk on his face. Layla let out a quiet annoyed sigh, "This is my boyfriend, Jared. Jared this is Daniel." Layla introduced the two while trying not to seem nervous. She really didn't want Daniel noticing that the two were faking it. "Oh." Daniel said while walking out of the kitchen. Layla looked up at Jared, "I'm not gunna lie I was really scared."

So, she was a photographer and a baker. "Sounds to me like you're living every girls dream," he half-teased, winking playfully as he took another guzzle of his booze. Jared's bright blue eyes glanced around for a bit before they landed on Daniel, Layla's ex-boyfriend. He strutted in with a dumb smirk planted on his face with a girl chasing behind him. Daniel was quite a bit shorter than Jared himself, who stood a towering height of six-foot-three. He merely lifted his can of booze once the introductions were made, his silent way of saying 'hello', before bringing it to his lips for another sip.
As the other walked off, Jared released a small chuckle and shook his head. "Who stuck a d***o up his a**?" He then downed the rest of his beer in one swig before putting the empty can on the counter. What Layla said made him laugh a little. "You've got nothing to worry about. He has no reason to believe that you and I aren't together," he said honestly, trying to comfort the girl. Then, as he fixed his gaze on what was happening in the living room, he thought about it for a second. "If we plan on keeping up this charade for the rest of the night, we may as well act like a couple, right?" He said with an alluring tone to his husky voice. "Let's dance." Jared grinned before taking hold of her hand and walking with her into the mass of sweaty, mingled dancing bodies.

Nodding her head when Jared reassured her that every thing was going to be fine. Layla was glad she grabbed his hand instead of trying to ride it out solo, Jared was a really nice guy. Chugging the rest of her beer and leaving the empty can on the counter as the male grabbed her hand and made her follow him back out to the huge crowd of people so the two could dance. There was a large mass of bodies that were all touching each other that Jared led her into, good thing Layla was buzzed from the 4 beers she had drink. If she hadn't drank tonight she would have never came out here to dance with anyone.
Letting go of Jared's hand, she stood in front of him and swayed her body on his to the beat of the music that could burst Layla's ear drum in any second. Good thing there was a good song playing, although Layla was into quiet acoustic music, she got into music that played on the top hit's radio station every once in a while. This was probably the first time she's danced at a party and she liked it. Maybe she had more confidence because of Jared grabbing her had and telling her to go dance. If he had asked, she would have denied.

 - time skip -
The male woke up the following morning to the piercing sunlight hitting his eyes. He scrunched up his face and tried to go back to sleep, wanting nothing more than to just lay here just like this for the entire day. Or even week. He felt so warm and so comfortable. Jared rubbed his nose and inhaled deeply as he stretched his arms above his head, sleepy hooded eyes peeking open ever so slightly when he felt weight on his chest. And there she was. Layla, sound asleep, nuzzled into his body still in the nude from the previous nights events. He gave half a smile at the sight.
Though, he decided it would be best to head out before she woke up. Inch by inch, Jared shifted away from Layla's sleeping form in hopes of not waking her and once he was a good few inches away, he groaned and planted his feet on the floor. Sitting there in his poor posture, the male rubbed his tattooed hands over his face and through his messy hair before burying his face into his palms. He felt so tired. Though, he eventually forced himself to pull on his boxers and jeans, turning around to face the bed once he did so. Shirtless, and still a little fatigued with a slight headache, Jared gazed down at the girl contemplating whether to wake her up or to just leave and never see her again.
He rather enjoyed Layla's company the night before. Before they hooked up, of course. They danced, they talked, shared some laughs. She all around seemed like a pretty cool chick. Which was why he decided to leave a sticky by her bedside with his name, number, and address of workplace before he left to go to work.

Layla groaned while sitting up to rub the sleep out of her eyes, pulling the blanket off her body, she got up and closed the curtains so it wasn't as dark in the room. Also, why was she naked? Looking around the room, she found a men's jacket on the floor. Jared. Running her fingers through her tangled hair, Layla grabbed a shirt and a pair of underwear to put on.
Layla wasn't into one night stands, so she was a little disappointed in herself. Looking over at her nightstand she noticed a sticky note that had his name, number and address of his work place. Grabbing her phone, she had a text message from her ex asking if Jared and her would go on a double date with him and his new girlfriend. "s**t." Layla whispered. A tattoo shop shouldn't always be busy and she could go see him there to give back his jacket along with ask him if he would go on this 'double date' with her ex.
After putting some real clothes on, Layla forced her feet into her low top converse and left her apartment. Layla knew where this certain tattoo shop was, she passed by it every time she'd head to the print shop. It made her think of the tattoo she'd been wanting for awhile. It was a memoriam for her grandma who loved to sew. Getting to the shop, Layla parked along the road and grabbed the jacket from the backseat. She was nervous. Walking out of her car, she walked straight into the shop to where Jared was sitting. "Could you do another favor for me?" She asked while handing his jacket he left on the floor of her bedroom. "My dumb a** ex asked if we could go on this stupid double date thing."

While Jared waited for his twelve o'clock appointment to roll around, he sat at his desk and assembled sketches for another client that he would be seeing tomorrow. He was basing it off a photo that the woman had given him of her baby girl, which she wanted tattooed on her lower left arm. When Jared was in his element, everyone knew better than to bother him until he was completely finished.
The ringing of the bell above the entrance to the parlour did not phase him. His blue eyes were concentrated on the little girls bright green orbs, paying attention to even the most diminutive of details - and that was when he heard Layla. He glanced up from his work before leaning back in his chair with half a smirk on his face. "Good morning," he said. Jared then stood up to hang his coat up on the wall. Clad in a white t-shirt and black jeans, the majority of his arm tattoos were visible as well as the one on his clavicle (though only partially).
"When and where is this double date taking place?" He asked curiously, lowering himself into his chair once more before picking up his pencil and going to work again. "My last appointment is at 7:30," he informed.

Layla answered Jared's question when he asked which restaurant. "I have a photo shoot at 6:30 and it'll take me an hour and a half." Layla told him, it was still pretty early so she'd have some more free time then she had to go home and bake a few cakes. Sitting down on the couch that was near her, she let out a quiet sigh. "So could you please come?" Layla begged, she felt sort of bad that she was using him just so he would act like he boyfriend. "I'll return the favor somehow." She offered.
Standing up, she got walked up towards Jared and looked over her shoulder at what he was sketching. "That's amazing." Layla gaped, she knew tattoo artist had to be good at their work, but she didn't know much about the actual job itself. Layla really wanted another tattoo, this one on on her inner bicep. It was for her grandma who passed away when she was 15. She loved to sew so she wanted to get a heart that looked like it was stitched into her skin.

Applebee's at 8:30. Sounded feasible enough. He loved the restaurant almost as much as he loved Boston Pizza. "I got no plans tonight," he said nonchalantly, figuring he might as well go with her. Save her the embarrassment of her ex finding out that she really was single. Jared looked up briefly towards Layla. "How about paying for my dinner?" He said jokingly, hoping to elicit at least something of a smile from the girl. Never would he ever make a girl do something like that. The most generosity he would accept would be splitting the cost of dinner, though not in this case. If he was going to be Layla's pretend boyfriend, he figured he may as well go all in and outclass her ex entirely.
"Thanks," he said in response to her compliment. "You got any tattoos of your own? Y'know, besides the one on your left hip," he asked, a sneaky smile playing on his lips as he continued his sketch. He couldn't help but notice it the night before as he was pulling off her jeans. It had stuck out like a sore thumb in the dim light of the lamp. "Beautifully done, by the way," he added in a more serious tone, brows creasing in concentration as he took care of the minor details in the infants lips and button nose. "Where did you get it?" It was apparent that he was trying to taunt and fluster the other. Something Jared enjoyed doing a little too much at times.

Layla could tell he was joking when he asked her to pay for his dinner and she wouldn't mind at all. "Okay I'll pay for you." Layla said seriously, she didn't really think that was very good for returning the favor because she felt like she owed him more then that.
When Jared asked if she had any tattoos, she was going to try to answer but he had already answered his own question. Layla tried not to smile but in the end she actually did. "That's the only one I have." Layla said while blushing, she tried to hide it with her hands but it didn't nessicarily work. "Thanks, I got it in Rhode Island, it's where my mom lives. We have matching ones." Layla mentioned, it sounded pretty cheesy but it'll probably be her favorite tattoo even if she gets any other ones. Dropping her hands to her sides, she stuffed them into the pockets of her jacket, not caring about the slight pink tint still left on her on her cheeks. "I really want another one though. I just need to put away some extra money for it." She mentioned, she really did want it. Layla just wasn't sure if she really wanted it on her inner bicep. It seemed like a painful area to get tattooed.
Checking the time on her phone, she did the math to how much time she'd get to bake some cakes before she had to go do a photo shoot. "I'm gunna go get Starbucks in a little, you want anything?"

"That's sweet," the man said genuinely with a smile. Jared wished he had special bonds with his parents - he hadn't spoken to either of them in years. The only one he cared enough to keep in touch with was his younger brother, Eric.
Layla went on to explain that she was looking to get another one, though that she didn't have the sufficient funds to do so at the moment. Jared nodded his head understandingly and thought about it for a moment, blue eyes subconsciously looking her over while she pulled out her phone to check the time. He hadn't really had the chance to fully look at the girl until now. She was pretty. He could see the youth in her face still which made him wonder how old she was. Twenty-three, maybe twenty-four. Though no younger than twenty-two.
By the time she looked back at him, he had turned his attention back to his sketch which was almost finished. "Just a coffee would be great, thanks," he answered. "Black with a shot of espresso," he added. "Just outta curiosity--what kind of tattoo were you thinking about getting? I'm sure we could work out a deal with the money you have." Normally, he wasn't this nice to his customers--tattooing was not something to be done cheap. Depending on the size, time, and amount of intricate detail, he could charge between 80-150 dollars per session.
