User ImageFinally slipping away from his pursuers Giotto ducked into the library. They weren’t likely to come in here and he could hide somewhere among the shelves. Clutching his bag to him he quickly found a small hiding spot and slid down a wall. He was this short of having a panic attack. He had been careless in his dressing today due to a late start and someone had recognized him. Even worse it was someone that looked down on the fact that his family had awoken him in October and he was a mutant. Since Giotto was on the frail side this obviously meant he was prime targets for bullies.

All he had wanted was to sit down and work on his homework and study. Now he had to come up with a reason why he had a bruised cheek and his outfit was torn. He probably should have gone to the nurses office but he didn’t want to accidently run into his siblings. His parents where on tour and he didn’t want to be a bother to him. It didn’t throb too much and he was used to it. Opening his book he tried to focus on his homework.

Rowan had been decided to do some studying in their free time. The subject was one of pleasure rather than business. They were really into the book and had a sheet of paper next to them full of neatly scribbled notes. So focused were they that when the quiet was pierced with the sound of an opening door, they flinched. There was a much quieter thud, presumably the door closing, and then the quiet patter of footsteps. Whoever they were, they were running in Rowan's direction.

The footsteps suddenly stopped. There was a faint whisper of harsh breathing, like someone trying to catch their breath. If Rowan hadn't been extending their hearing to the utmost they probably wouldn't have noticed it.

Wonderful. There were probably ruffians in the library, using it for games. A frown creased their brow as they let out a suffering sigh. "Indoor Gardens: A Guide for Beginners" would have to wait.

Rowan left the book on the table and hopped down, hunting for the miscreant so they could give them a proper scolding about playing in places meant for quiet study and learning. They were so focused on trouble makers that when they spotted a hybrid studying they had to do a double take. Even when they noticed the hybrid's chest moving like one still catching their breath, Rowan felt a bit of doubt. This didn't look like a miscreant...

Rowan took a couple steps closer, still frowning. They thought it was a trick of the light, but it seemed like the hybrid had something on their cheek. And their clothes looked a bit strange. Granted Rowan was quite clueless about fashion, but something still didn't seem right. Making up their mind, they moved closer.

"Excuse me. Is everything alright," Rowan politely queried as they reached acceptable conversation range. Their curiosity was roused, and now they wanted answers.

Giotto tried to get their breathing under control. After all you were supposed to be quiet in the library and on the off chance that his bullies, for lack of a better word, followed him in here he didn’t want to be heard or spotted. It had taken nearly an hour last time to lose them and he really didn’t want to bother the other people in the library. He had already had somewhat of a loud entrance no matter how quiet he had tried to be. He really did need to work on that homework.

There was just one problem. When he went to pull out the necessary books his arms and shoulders refused to work properly and no matter how much he tugged the book kept slidding back into his back pack. He felt utterly useless why couldn’t he just remove one book.

However he froze when he heard someone walking nearby, his hands still struggling to get the heavy book out of his book bag. Time almost seemed like it stopped until Giotto’s mind caught up with the present again. They didn’t look like they were from earlier and there wasn’t a spark of recognition in those eyes. So they probably meant what they said.

He nodded at their question and winced as the movement sent a hurtful throbbing to their cheek. Absent mindedly the raised a hand to where it hurt. Obviously caught from his actions he sighed and looked up at the nixie. “No… but I’ll be alright in a little bit.”

Rowan stared for a bit. The smudge seemed to be a bruise, judging by the other's reaction. They weren't an expert on injuries so there was no way to tell how fresh the bruise was, but it was clearly tender. And the more Rowan looked at the situation, the more they were sure that the tears in the hybrid's clothing weren't just fashion statements.

Now Rowan had never been good with people. Generally they tended to spend most of their time in classes, their room, or the library, and made no special efforts to socialize. There were a few kids who were unendingly perky who were cheerful with everyone they met, but for the most part after a few attempts people left Rowan alone. They'd only ever been the target of a heckling type of bullying, but since they didn't really care what other people though it never bothered Rowan in the slightest.

But right now, staring at a freshling who was clearly on the receiving end of harsher treatment than was ever meted out to Rowan, the Nixie felt the stirrings of....protectiveness? Certainly something was there, but they had no idea what exactly it was or what to do about it. It was quite odd, and while Rowan had no clue how to deal with it they were certain that it would persist if they didn't try to do something about it.

So, feeling highly awkward, Rowan moved a little bit closer. "You can come sit with me if you want to study. It'll be more comfortable." Eyeing the bruise, Rowan added, "I might have something that can help with the ouch, at least a little bit."

Giotto kept staring at the other Freshling’s face seeing if any form of recognition crossed them. His eyes glowing eerily before he realized he was being creepy and pulled back the glow. So far it looked like the nixie in front of him only saw him as a bullied freshling. He was still a bit miffed at himself for giving away that he was hurt but there was nothing he could do about it at the moment.

The silence that was passing between them was a bit tense but nothing Giotto wasn’t used to. His parents where ridiculously famous and being their second set of Hallowed kids Giotto got stared at a lot. Even if it wasn’t his Father’s fault Giotto and Clear where hallowed. Meris had been trying to save them from the rabid fan after all.

Giotto pondered the offer. It would be more layers of protection, flimsy, but still bullies were less likely to attack when you had reinforcements. “I really do want to study. If you really don’t mind I’ll take you up on the offer." He sighed and struggled to his feet dusting off imaginary or maybe not so imaginary specks of dust or dirt. “Ah yeah I should probably take care of that bruise if at all possible before other people catch on as well. Thank you”

Rowan nodded, then felt awkward again. Okay, so invitation extended and accepted. What now? Lead them by the hand? There was something to be said for Rowan's social awkwardness at least. They rarely made direct eye contact, so hadn't really noticed anything off about the other's eyes. Not that it would have made a huge difference, Rowan only cared about anomalies if they applied directly to their life. Something as innocuous as strange eyes would barely register on their radar. The glow didn't even register at all. The result of living around Geists and being familiar with their glowiness and all.

Well, one of the things Rowan remembered reading in a book about improving social interaction skills was about politeness and being considerate. "Ah, I'll help you with your bag," they said, barely managing to keep from stammering over the unfamiliar words. They picked up the bag from the floor, hoping they were doing this socializing thing right, and began to lead the way back to their table.

"....My name's Rowan," they said as they walked, figuring the introduction should be somewhere at the start of the interaction period and not really knowing how else to bring it up. It would be nice if there was a list they could follow, it would make things much simpler!

So they weren't reacting negatively or even at all to Giotto's obvious mutations and they didn't recognize Giotto. It was in a sense somewhat refreshing. After all these days his family seemed to be constantly in the news. They were a bit awkward but they seemed to want to help so Giotto let them take their bag... which come to think of it was probably a good thing now that he was coming down from his adreline high he was starting to feel extremely sore. Considering his earlier misattempts at trying to get his book out of his bag.

Giotto realized he was still sitting down and hesitantly got back up to his feet. He liked to at least to be polite when ever he could."thank you for the help"he stated still in the soft voice he had been using. He followed The other male back to his table.

However when Rowan offered his name Giotto froze up. Manners ditacted that he give his own name, due to the events of today he was hesitant, what if Rowan suddenly flipped as soon as Giotto gave it. However did Rowan really deserve that, it was obvious he was awkward about the whole thing as well and he was trying to help Giotto. " Nice to meet you. I'm Giotto"

Rowan nodded in response. Their table was pretty close, but it was in a more secluded little niche that generally didn't get many passers by. They found it idea for studying or pleasure reading.

They set Giotto's bag down and went around to their own. After a bit of digging they came out with a jar of lotion. "I don't know if it'll help much or not," Rowan said, feeling sheepishly awkward as he offered the jar to Giotto. "I make my own skin products sometimes, and this one came out a bit thick. Not so good for frequent use, but good if you have really dry skin."

'I'm babbling,' Rowan thought, trying hard not to blush self-consciously.

"It's scented with peppermint plants. It feels pretty tingly and cool whenever I use it, so maybe it can help," he trailed off, feeling a bit dim. Peppermint lotion, yea, that was tooootally going to help that bruise.

There was still no flicker of recognition and Giotto smacked himself internally. He was better than this. It d part of the reason they probably always bullied him. He wanted to believe the best in people. Yet what was he doing here, part of him was wondering if Rowan was going to turn on him. Yet the Nixie hadn't, in fact even though there was an awkward feeling to the Nixie he was offering his help and had sacrificed his time and library space. Giotto woul stop this train of thinking right o now.

Following Rowan back to his table he gave the other male a small smile as he took the lotion. "Well at the very least I thank you for the thought and if it will help with this throbbing I would be willing to try it" Giotto said in a less soft and more confident tone than he had been using as he took the lotion.

He knew a couple of Nixie. One of the stage people that worked with his dad's band was a Nixie, so he looked down at the lotion that was now in his hands. Nixie had to be careful since they could get so dry.so he did very much appreciat th gesture. He looked down at the lotion again. Well they would never know if it would work if he didn't out it on right. Here went nothing.

Now Rowan actually did blush. They never shared their lotions, partially because they were a perfectionist and would never put their claim to something that wasn't absolutely the best they could make it. And partially because they weren't really close enough with anyone to have ever offered before now.

"Probably only use a little. Peppermint oil is pretty strong, and the aromatic effect might make your eyes sting if you get it too close," they muttered quietly. "I test them all on myself first, but if it feels uncomfortable let me know. People sometimes react differently."

They settled back down in their chair and picked up their book again, but were feeling so self conscious right now that they couldn't really focus on the words. Aah, this was no good. They needed to calm down a bit. Rowan tried some of the breathing tricks they'd learned in a meditation book. It did help a little.

When they blushed Giotto flickered his gaze to the table. He didn’t want to stare and cause Rowan more embarrassment. They didn’t look like they were the type to blush easily. Oh that was right. He should try the lotion it would give him something to do while waiting for the blush to disappear. “Only a little? Got it, I’ll make sure not to go overboard”

When he applied it, there was a sense of cool that washed away the pain for a moment but it seemed as if the pain waited to come back just as soon as it started absorbing into his skin. There was still a sense of coolness though and it helped bring down the pain a little bit. Enough to stop thinking about it at least.

It was then he turned towards his books again. He still needed to get them out of the bag and not focus on the way Rowan was breathing. Was he making the other boy nervous? Had he messed something up? Perhaps they weren’t really a people person or something? He wasn’t sure what to do.

Rowan glanced over at Giotto and noticed the look they were getting. Ah man, they being so totally obvious, weren't they? The blush came right back, though they were able to keep their mind from spinning around in a circle of "I did this wrong" thoughts.

"Sorry," Rowan muttered quietly, resuming their seat and adjusting their own book. "I'm not...good with people. I read most of the time, or study. So I do weird things sometimes. Sorry." They resolutely attempted not to make eye contact, sure that it would probably just make their reaction worse.

Plants. Focus on plants. Impress the herbology teacher with their knowledge and figure out how what might be a good addition to their itty bitty scent garden.

"I... I may not be some one you should trust on this, i obviously am not really good at peopling either. However I think it doesn't matter if you speak up and do things when they matter" Giotto said thinking back on when Rowan had come to offer what aid he could just mere minutes ago. " the people that did this were the type they knew how to people. Yet I wouldn't want to be like them" his wing twitched in irritation as he though about them and he started glowing angrily.

" I just will say that I don't mind your people skills at all... and I'll uh concentrate on this book before I get any more embarrassing." Giotto said making sure not to fade out due to his own awkwardness. "Sorry about that"

He did briefly flicker his gaze up at Rowan but then went back to the papers he had managed to pull out. He should also see how to sneak today's events past their older sibling. Cy would be easy and might not even come home with them. Seraph on the other hand..... ugh seraph was the challenge.

Rowan did find themselves growing a bit more embarrassed. "Don't worry about it," they muttered, then, more quietly, "Thanks."

Silence sprouted up as the two freshlings buried themselves into books and papers. Rowan slowly lost some of that awkward feeling and felt the blush vanishing along with it. They managed to start reading their book and even made a bit of progress, scribbling notes in the journal they had with them.

However they couldn't really dismiss Giotto entirely, like they usually did with other students when in class or reading. Every now and then Rowan would pause after a paragraph and glance over at the hybrid. Even if the peppermint salve had helped just a little, that bruise would be hurting. It would probably start to swell, actually, They'd never had a black eye before, but they'd witnessed a few in their time. Even if the bruise was more on the cheek than the eye, it would still likely swell and become a bother for Giotto.

"Maybe," they said, starting a little at how loud their voice sounded in the broken silence, even though they hadn't really been talking loud at all. Rowan picked back up where they had faltered. "Maybe you should go to the nurse. It'll probably get pretty bad if you don't do something for it." They didn't count their measly salve anywhere near a treatment...

Yeah focus on the table. Don’t embarrass the poor nixie even worse. He was on a roll today. Ah well every day couldn’t be perfect but giotto hadn’t wanted him to think that he had a problem.

There was always a trick when you were in the limelight often. It was that you had to get used to being staring at you or looking at you from the corner of your eye. Giotto had gotten to the point where he cataloged it somewhere in the back of his head and just continued what he was doing. So when Rowan continued glancing over it was no different. Giotto continued working on his homework getting a good chunk of progress in.

“Ah… I” Giotto started. A trip to the nurse would raise questions and so far he hadn’t had much luck with the whole bully thing. He had learned to just deal with it on his own. However it obviously wasn’t going to work this time. “I will. It’s just I’m not entirely sure they’ve given up yet and I kind of don’t want to get ambushed on the way to the nurses office. They’ve waited nearby it for me before. Plus I have yet to perfect phasing through the wall”
