This is generally the first area that new arrivals see at Beacon Academy, a large road lined with street lamps that leads to the academy's amphitheater. There is a large statue just before the amphitheater, and there are aqua-duct-like structures that surround the statue. A small circle of red-leafed trees stand around the statue as well.

"It would only make sense that I'm way too early. This is my own fault, I know. Dang, could've had longer goodbyes with the kids. Oh well, no use getting messed up over it now." Mauve wasn't the only student who was ridiculously early. There were a few others who'd gotten the jump on getting to Beacon on time. He could only assume they were worried about something going wrong. Bathroom breaks, getting lost, chatting too long, plenty of things could make one late. It was the students who were prepared for these sorts of things that made reliable friends and partners. That wasn't why Mauve was earlier, and he certainly wasn't scoping out the other students. He was simply making sure that he didn't miss a single opportunity on the first day. "Now... let's get familiar with this campus while I've got the time." Some pop-influenced rock song coming through his headphones, Mauve tossed his bags up onto a bench that sit on the side of the pathway and popped and squat. There was a map students could access with their scroll, if he remembered correctly.

The sucker he had tossed in his mouth upon arriving here was getting low... As the light-haired boy sat cross-legged on the bench, he flipped through the scroll for more info, debating if he should replenish his stock of candy or prepare for the true events of the day: meeting people, the opening ceremony. Can't do any of that with a mouth full. Well, not without being incredibly rude. "Gum, then...? Meh."

Anyone who walked by Mauve could hear the loud pop of bubble gum whenever he snapped it in his mouth. Every few minutes, he'd end up mumbling to himself about the location of a building or what happens at a certain time. More and more people were beginning to walk by him. It was getting crowded. Noting that, he looked up into the corner of his scroll to check the time. I guess it's gettin' a little closer, huh? Better get moving. After he closed his scroll and shoved it into his sweatshirt pocket, Mauve picked up the few bags he'd brought with him. "Alrighty! Let's get moving!" It'd be a shame if he'd shown up as early as he did but ended up late for the ceremonies. Someone walking by must've heard him talking to himself, 'cause they seemed pretty focused on him. Mauve just grinned and held up a peace sign with his free hand. The stranger nodded in return before heading to the amphitheater. Guess I should go too, he thought snapping his gum.

EXIT.

"Thanks for the ride. I'll be sure to pay you back one day." Lyon stated as he slapped at the door of a delivery truck, having caught a ride from the driver after he had woken up. Watching the man drive back towards the city, Lyon merely sighed and turned his attention towards the statue that stood in the middle of Main Avenue. "Looks like some things just never change. Never expected everything to look so... similar." He stated, wondering just what he was doing coming back here after all this time. Sure, his job entailed him to see everything through to the end, but that girl was perfectly safe on the airship that was going to be delivering her. I'm even a couple days early at that. He thought to himself, not entirely sure where he should be regretting his actions yet or not. From what he understood, Beacon had changed quite a bit in its structure and staffing. Mentors were a thing now, and there were loads of new teachers that were taking part in raising new hunters and huntresses. That list included Velvet as well.

Overall, everything seemed more or less not favorable for him. Just why was he deciding to show up so early or at all? For the past three years, he had mostly kept in contact through letters and various other forms of communication. Ozpin was used to this, and he surely would be surprised at his return, maybe even upset. "It's that idiot girl's fault for sure." He muttered to himself, unsure of what to think of his actions. His mind, however, drifted back to a few months ago, when he had met the child faunus he had sent towards Beacon. "That girl's nothing but trouble, and now I'm stuck in the one place I never wanted to come back to." He muttered, walking up to the statue in the middle of the area. Red leaves were billowing around, fluttering through the sky as he took in the scenery. In all honesty, the sight was rather beautiful, and it was only made more extravagant by the surrounding area that was pretty well kept. Ozpin... He muttered in his mind, unsure of how he would explain the current situation to the headmaster of the school.

That was when something nipped his leg, a slight pain coursing through his calf. Turning towards the source of the pain, he caught sight of a small reddish-brown cat with large eyes. "Ah... it's you. How've you been? Is Velvet doing alright?" He asked, crouching down towards the cat and petting it on the head. It casually began to rub its head across his hand and meow at him, obviously content with being around the man despite having not seen him for three years. "Heh. Well, at least that's something." He stated, continuing to play with the cat for a little bit. "You've gotten pretty big, you know? I remember when you were just a little kitten. Velvet was pretty happy when you showed up if I remember." He stated to it, ruffling the fur on its back as he stood back up. "That's enough catching up though. Go on back to Velvet little guy." He stated to the cat, the creature meowing back at him before running off towards the school. "Can't believe he came all the way out here first thing in the morning to see me." He muttered in slight disbelief. That was when something rang out in his pocket, signaling that he had gotten some sort of message.

Pulling out his scroll, he noticed that he had been emailed the campus-wide feed for the initiation of the new first years. "They're still doing that?" He muttered, opening up the stream and watching a few minutes of it. The new first years were not that bad, given their progress in training, but they were not the best. The only people of note that Lyon could see were a faunus girl and some strange girl with feathers on her head. "And even they're not the best. That boarbatusk should've been easy for her to take out. It seems like most of these first years are riding by on pure luck, especially the kid wearing all black." He muttered to himself, observing their trial. After watching for an hour or so, the man put away his scroll and sighed a little bit. "Looks like those mentors are gonna have a lot of work cut out for them. These students definitely aren't the best. Some of them don't even look like they know what they're doing half the time." He stated, looking back at the school. It's going to be a while before Ozpin gets back if that initiation's going on. Guess I can just wait here then. He thought to himself, sighing a bit as he leaned up against one of the trees.

"Another." Qrow said, pushing forwards his glass of alcoholic substance. The ice within rattled as Qrow's finger left it, letting it stop near the other side of the bar counter. There, an old oriental man stood. Qrow was on a stool, leaning over the bar now with his hands clasped together in front of him, elbows bent at the sides on the bar. "Another? But it's only midday" the old barman replied, sounding astonished. Qrow exhaled and said "look, I can handle my drink, okay?" Qrow then pulled out a Lien note and lightly dropped it to the bar. "That's you're third one" he said to Qrow, but taking the note nonetheless. "Heh..." Qrow exhaled, "three times lucky. Don't worry - I won't be breaking glasses." Finally the barman took the empty glass and continued to turn around and begin making Qrow another drink, meanwhile he looked up at the monitor in the top left corner of the room. On it he could see the broadcast for the initiation of the first years. Qrow has arrived only yesterday and after briefly meeting with Ozpin he vanished for the night, only to re-appear this morning... late this morning in the bar at the edge of Vale, not far from beacon. He had already forced the old man to let him stream it from his Scroll, he enjoyed a bigger picture, and this broadcast wasn't exactly public. Luckily there was no one else in the bar this early to stop him, or for Oz to find out.

On the feed, he could see several students that stood out. Not necessarily for the skill - although they weren't all too bad either. It was just small things making the problems much larger. Like riding down cliffs into the unknown, or letting a Boarbatusk throw you off because of a dodgy angle. "Those Hildeharr's are always so selfless" Qrow said to himself, watching her fight alongside Elliot unfold. "Surprised to see her here though, both her parents are in the Atlesian Army."He then watched Elliot as he rushed in with the punches, "and too much like Yang" he couldn't help but whisper, as if watching some kind of entertainment. "Punch first act later - Glynda can't be happy with that."
"You're drink." The old barman then said, walking over with Qrow's new drink in hand. As Qrow stretched his arm out to reach for it however, the old man's grip seemed to slip and the glass fell between his fingers, smashing on the floor below into a thousand pieces of ice and glass. After a pause, Qrow let out a breath and said "on second thought's... i'll stop at two. Three's not my number. Keep the change for the glass."
"But it wasn't your fault"
"Keep it" Qrow replied quietly, pushing away from the bar as he took his scroll and cancelled the feed to the monitor ahead of him. He took a moment to collapse his Scroll and pocket it before leaving the room with his hands in his pockets.

Qrow couldn't help but be reminded on a daily basis... that luck was never on his side. For as long as he can remember, luck would besmirch him. But it wasn't as accurate as that, it would be hard to guess when or how his semblance would come into action. It could be against him, or against his enemy, or against his loved ones for that matter. Sometimes, it might work out in his favour - ironically. But there was usually going to be some more bad luck just after to get him back like karma. But by now, he was almost numb at the thought. He was used to it now, his life had been sculpted around being a bad luck charm. Even though now it was easier... he still didn't like people to get too close. Not even Ruby or Yang. Especially not Ruby or Yang. No matter how young or old they were. Letting his thoughts subside after a while of walking, he encountered a side alley leading straight through towards the Main Avenue. He could see the statue in the centre surrounded by red leaf trees. He had agreed to mentor this year, under strict rules he set for Oz and not the other way around. No mentoring before 11AM, and no mentoring after 4PM, he had a busy life, and things he's much rather be doing. Five hours a day would surely be enough, and in that amount of time he'd hope to at least see a dozen students. Who would need mentoring for 5 hours anyway. Team RWBY were mentors this year, an interesting factor, Qrow hadn't been a mentor at the same time as them before, the last few years he's actually been away on missions for Ozpin, but thought he'd call it a break. Any news surrounding the forces of Grimm seemed safe, or worryingly quiet, although there have been a few... odd cases of Grimm behaviour recently, and that's not including the humanoid grimm.

After a few more minutes Qrow got closer to the avenue, he was thinking about how he'd have to see Ozpin again later today, but for now he would have to wait for the initiation to be over. He was about to pull out his Scroll when he noticed somebody ahead of him, leaning against a tree. "Hmm... Qrow thought, It can't be. But it could, although ever chance would weigh against it, but it most definitely was. The legendary huntsman himself. Qrow knew only a little about the kid, havn't not really cared about his story or his life before the Fall of Beacon. Only since he was in contact with Qrow after things began to calm down did Qrow get a glimpse of the man through small words exchanged in meetings with Qrow. He knew enough to know this guy could walk into a fight and come out crystal clean a lucky guy, apparently. Qrow would beg to differ, he was just a kid taking chances and somehow getting through it - or he was actually very skilled. It's strange that he's here, however.

Qrow got closer, coming from the side from a few metres away before he said anything. "Hey, kid." Qrow said, "I thought you were just a story, that's if i am right in presuming who you are, anyway. But I've got a keen eye, and I'm pretty sure I'm still sober enough to be right."

"There's no way I'm going there all alone! You're going to go with me, or I'm not going at all! No way!" The words echoed through Lyon's mind as he began to daydream, remembering some of the events that had led up to him coming back to Beacon. "You're really gonna come too? Alright then, I guess I'll go..." He remembered being told, his mind slightly uneasy as he reflected on the events. After a few moments, he simply sighed and thought about last night's events as well. I still don't know what those idiots were planning to do with all of that dust. It didn't seem like they were trying to turn a profit with it though. He thought to himself, remembering how ready the group was to simply blow everything up rather than get caught by him. Does that mean that their goal wasn't selling? They were heading down the road that leads to the academy. He thought to himself, trying to figure out some sort of logic behind the group's plan. Then again, they may have just been willing to do anything to save the life of their leader. Loyalty may be something hard to find nowadays, but that did not mean it was nonexistent.

Before he could think about the subject more, something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. It was another cat, a stray he had never seen before. "A black cat?" He muttered to himself as the cat simply walked up to him, meowed, and walked away. "What's that all about?" He muttered again, confused at the sudden appearance of the animal. That was when a voice rang out, one he was not too familiar with. "Kid?" Lyon questioned with a rather irritated tone to his voice as he turned towards the source of the noise. That was when he locked eyes with none other than Qrow, although he was not aware that was who the man was. Listening to the man, he could not help but shake his head a little bit at the mention of being sober enough to identify who Lyon was. "Guess that means you've been drinking this morning, huh, old man?" Lyon asked, still slightly irritated at being called a kid. Although, he was somewhat rude naturally as well. Either way, the young man had to vent out his irritation somehow.

"Anyway, I don't want to pretend to know what you're talking about. I'm just here to pay Oz a visit... and maybe Professor, um, Scarlatina." Lyon stated, stumbling a little bit as he tried to think of how to address Velvet given the fact that she was a professor now. Observing the man closely, Lyon could not help but notice a few features on the man looked pretty similar to some stories he had heard. They were the stories of the man that Lyon thought could help him with his problem. The so-called "bad luck charm." "Now that you mention it though, you look pretty familiar too. I guess you'd be Qrow Branwen, right?" Lyon asked, trying to confirm whether or not this person was who he thought it was. The man was famous enough considering how great a huntsman he was, and, while his image was not plastered over every street corner, most huntsmen and huntresses worth their two cents vaguely knew about him. "What's a guy like you doing here at Beacon?" The man asked Qrow, just trying to have some sort of conversation with him while he tried to confirm if the man he was speaking to really was Qrow Branwen.

Qrow held his hands firmly within his pockets, thumbs stuck out either side. The guy he spoke to turned around, bright red, messy hair revealing a scarred face. Qrow cheaply exhaled at Lyon's reaction, obviously irritated for being called a kid. He saw Lyon's head work, the tiny little mannerisms that showed him to be thinking, and working out who Qrow was. Although, Lyon's first reaction was to call him out for drinking in the morning. "You can't look this good without a drink or two in the morning" Qrow replied, raising his chin slightly, as if to eye up Lyon, immediately taking a sip of his hip-flask afterwards. With a gasp, he wiped his mouth and let the kid speak. "So..." Qrow went on, "not just anyone calls him Oz, and if you're meeting with him you must be pretty established. I'm no fool. As for Scarlatina - can't say I've spoken to her."

Qrow took a moment to begin walking around Lyon, admiring his clothes and vibrant red hair. Lyon finally took his chance to admit he recognised Qrow, and for a moment he was almost impressed, or even flattered. Qrow came to a stop again, nodding in agreement. "And you would be one Lyon Garnet. I could ask you the same question, isn't this place a little too boring for you, or too easy?" Qrow began picking at the small bits of information he knew about this guy, and he wasn't going to lie to himself, it was aggravating. He came out on top of odds that were all against him, he came out untouched. "But sad to say, I'm gonna be mentoring some of these kids this year." Qrow then pulled out his Scroll and held it up beside his face, revealing the broadcast and a little bit of the sound coming from the tiny speakers.

"You could say that. Me and Oz go back a couple years now." Lyon began, not really sure if he should be saying much more of anything to who he believed was Qrow. After all, it was best to keep as much information about his missions as quiet as possible. "He was my headmaster after all. And he's kinda been a good friend to keep in touch with." Lyon commented, referring to the letters he had been exchanging with Ozpin since Lyon had left Beacon Academy a couple years back. It did not surprise him, however, that Qrow was not well-acquainted with Velvet. After all, the man had not been present at all from what Lyon remembered when Velvet was brought in as a teach or the few years he spent at Beacon before he left on his missions. "Well, visiting her is kind of a personal matter. Not that anythign stays very private at a place like this." Lyon mentioned, rubbing his neck slightly at the thought of having to explain himself to the faunus. He was actually quite nervous about the whole thing.

Lyon's instincts, however, were quickly triggered by Qrow circling him, or at least walking around him. Those sort of movements usually meant someone was sizing up an opponent, or they were trying to get some sort of movement going before rushing into a fight. Qrow's question about Beacon being boring or, better yet, "too easy" was slightly amusing to Lyon. A smirk appeared on his face as he shrugged a little. "It's not a matter of being boring or easy. Sometimes you just gotta go with the wind." He replied rather half-heartedly, trying to give some sort of explanation for him being there. "But like I said before. I'm here for... personal reasons." He mentioned, shifting his weight slightly and causing the rabbit foot on his belt to move around a little bit. "And to see Oz. Although, I'm kind of curious why you'd ask for information that I've already given. Seems like you might be trying to pry something out of me that I'm not willing to give up, or don't have altogether." Lyon mentioned, slight suspicion coming over him as he observed the man.

When Qrow said he was going to be a mentor, however, Lyon could not help but feel some sort of amusement come over him. A drunkard being a mentor at Beacon? What was Ozpin thinking? To make matters worse, the scroll that Qrow pulled out happened to catch one particular moment that just cemented Lyon's pessimistic opinions about the new first years. Elliot's little puntastic joke about the Grimm. With a slight chuckle, Lyon looked back towards Qrow after turning away to hide the huge smile on his face. "Yeah, looks like you've got quite a handful this semester. Think it's a coincidence Glynda's kid turned out the complete opposite of what she wanted? Or do you think Yang had a hand in that?" Lyon asked, smirking slightly. "Not to mention all the Atlas kids. Back in my day it was a pretty rare sight to see a single kid from Atlas. This semester they got two, and one's an heiress to boot!" He joked, poking slight fun at the new arrivals. "Anyway, that's about all I'm here for. Just here to see Oz and Professor Scarlatina." He reiterated, trying to cement that fact in Qrow's mind.

Go way back, huh? Qrow could've smiled at the thought, thinking the same thing about himself. He felt confidence in knowing he must've known Oz for longer. "Oz is a good guy..." Qrow replied. As for Lyon's meeting with Miss Scarlatina, Qrow remained silent, with very little to say on the matter until Lyon explained his presence here. Lyon's smirk caught Qrow's attention, and he became intrigued when Lyon said it was more about going with the wind. "A chancer, huh?" Qrow asked rhetorically before discussion continued to Lyon calling Qrow out on repeating himself. At first Qrow didn't reply, realising the mishap. "Prying, or too sober" Qrow put his Scroll away and shook his hip flask in the other hand, examining how much liquid was still inside it.

Finally they began speaking about the initiation, and as Qrow had replaced his Scroll it seemed Lyon saw something amusing. He didn't catch the huge smile, just an audible chuckle. Qrow pulled a thoughtful expression as he thought to himself about Glynda's kid, Elliott. "If anything, Yang helped that kid. Imagine following Glynda's footsteps. No fun in that." Qrow crossed his arms, facing Lyon again as he mentioned the Atlas students. It was something that had surprised Qrow too. He let out a sigh before saying "perhaps they finally realised that Atlas isn't the only place in the world." He couldn't help but think back to James Ironwood and the attitude of the Atlas Military. With their government and military being the same body, they acted very contained. Sometimes it was as if they ignored the rest of the world unless trading is involved. They always had to be bigger, better. It irked Qrow to think about it. Qrow nodded, almost grinning at the mention of the heiress. Can barely deal with one... he thought to himself, remembering Weiss Schnee.

Qrow's gaze had wandered to the floor by now in thought, but as soon as Lyon went back to seeing Oz and Miss Scarlatina Qrow couldn't help but raised a brow. It was suspicious to reiterate something so obviously. Qrow wanted to get to the bottom of it, find out what this Lyon Garnet really had to prove his capabilities. "Just" to see Oz and Professor Scarlatina. I remember telling my niece something like that a long time ago." He then widened his eyes slightly and gestured with his hand, "but forget the Scarlatina part, obviously." His hand then swayed down as he took in a breath, feeling the edge of that liquor by now. "I don't like chancers" Qrow then said, going back to the earlier discussion at hand. "There's gotta be somethin' else that Ozpin sees in you, kid. Perhaps i'll be lucky enough to find out." Qrow clasped a hold of the handle of his weapon behind his waist, as if to be leaning against it slightly.

Qrow seemed to know quite a bit about Lyon from what the man could gather during their conversation. Certain words he used, the suspicion that seemed to be in his voice. Both of them were on edge, and Lyon could imagine why that was the case. His whole family's practically here, and any small mistake could be the end of an entire generation of kids. Lyon thought to himself, remembering the events of "The Fall of Beacon." At any moment, this school could become a battleground for the agendas of various factions. The Wanderers, the White Fang, and even Salem were all out there and willing to obliterate every huntsman and huntress. "It'd be nice if it was chance. But for me, that's just a fairy tale." Lyon stated, responding to Qrow's words about chance. Qrow seemed to be incredibly focused on the flask that he was holding, something that Lyon took note of as he examined the older man closely. Just what game was this guy playing at by trying to scrutinize him?

Their conversation continued towards Glynda's son and Yang, something that he was surprised Qrow was willing to talk about. Lyon expected that his abrupt change of subject would simply be brushed off or ignored, yet that was clearly not the case. "I'd say that Glynda's position isn't a bad one. I wouldn't have minded growing up to take up the role of Vice Principal. May not be much fun in it, but there's definitely something to be had by achieving that much." Lyon responded, not really thinking too much about the off-hand subject that he, himself, had brought up. "Either way, looks like you might have another trouble-making team, maybe even two, again. From what I hear, it's been quite a while since anyone caused a ruckus around Beacon like RWBY and JNPR did." Lyon stated, shrugging a little bit as he eyed Qrow carefully, making sure the man was not trying to pull something funny as the conversed with each other. Despite the fact that this man was very well-accomplished, Lyon knew that Qrow had a tendency to... over-exaggerate and caused trouble, at least a little bit.

Almost on cue, the old man seemed to try and call out Lyon again with a bit of suspicion, stating that he had said some similar words to his niece quite a while ago. That was when the man seemed to take a breath and state something that irked Lyon. Doesn't like "chancers," huh? Lyon thought to himself, not sure how to take in the words that Qrow had thrown at him. The words chance and lucky were too much of a coincidence at this point, especially after Qrow already seemed to know who he was. Watching the man, he noticed that Qrow was holding the handle of his weapon for some odd reason. "Who knows, Oz has a crazy habit of picking a random huntsman or huntress and sticking with them, doesn't he?" Lyon responded offhand, his own hand casually grasping the hilt of his sword as he put both his hands behind his head. It was a very casual movement, as he leaned back against the tree. Lyon could practically feel his body tensing up as he awaited whatever Qrow had planned. Whatever Qrow decided to do, however, Lyon was fully prepared to block the first blow with his blade.

Pain
Is your reward for being near me.

Fate
Won't be your friend when I'm around.

You should trust one thing,
Take my advice,
If you linger close,
It's a hefty price.

I don't mean to bring you pain,
But I will, just why, I can't explain.

Qrow continued leaning on the handle of his weapon, as if it was an object separate from himself, which it most definitely was not. If anything, it made his posture very poor. He could feel his body's balance was slightly off, but somehow it helped more than attempting to stand straight. Perhaps it was the drink. He watched Lyon lift his hands behind his head, a seemingly casual gesture, and to tell the truth, Qrow almost took it for that, too. He had briefly noted where the blade was before, but right now he wasn't particularly thinking about that. "Heh, random..." Qrow said, tilting his head and staring at Lyon. A few ideas were being thrown around in Qrow's head. One was to just leave the kid alone, let this blow over the easy way. Or, he could wind the guy up even more and let him throw the first punch. But Qrow preferred the third idea. Give Lyon a warning, test what he's got, surprise him - if he can. Qrow then tightened his grip on his sword, and suddenly the tip began to extend, becoming it's full length. Whilst holding it as if it were a dagger he swung from his hip diagonally upwards and across towards Lyon's face. As their weapons inevitably clashed, Qrow smiled and crossed eyes with Lyon, a cheap exhale coming from his nostrils.

"C'mon" Qrow said, "was that chance? I can't be sure, but it looks like you just blocked me." Qrow then pushed away, moving backwards to make a little gap between the two of them as he got into a stance. Qrow then spun on his heel and slashed horizontally once, twice, thrice and before stabbing forwards.

I am no one's blessing,
I'll just bring you harm.

What a trouble-maker. He's worse than Yang and Ruby combined. Lyon thought to himself as he watched Qrow's hand tighten its grip. Can't say I'm too surprised. He's drunk first thing in the morning. Of course he's going to cause a good bit of trouble. The man thought to himself as he loosened his body, getting ready to move at a moments notice. It did not take long for Qrow to make his first move, the sword suddenly extending slightly and a slash coming up towards Lyon's face. Luckily, Lyon had time to bring his own sword down and block it, his blade clashing with some sparks. "Now don't say that. I could've just been pretty lucky right?" Lyon responded back to Qrow, almost mocking him by putting emphasis on the word. "I have to say though, you're pretty sneaky for a swordsman. But, I think I'd prefer to keep the scars on my face to a minimum of one." Lyon stated to Qrow, smirking slightly as Qrow pushed away and created a little bit of a gap between the two of them. Is he done already? Lyon thought to himself.

Whelp, nope. Still not done! Lyon thought to himself as Qrow revved up like some human spinning top. While Lyon managed to hold his place and block the blows, they pushed him back ever so slightly with each strike, Qrow obviously showing that he had good momentum behind the attacks. It was the final strike that cause Lyon to finally abandon his ground. "No thanks!" He stated, hopping up and landing on the blade just right to keep himself balanced atop it by some miracle. "I know we keep doing this little song and dance about chance, but do you think we can just chalk some of this up to pure dumb luck?" He stated with a smirk on his face, quickly leaping upwards into the tree from the blade. On his way to jumping into the tree, he grabbed a tree branch that was clearly cracked and used it to propel himself up a ways. Unfortunately, he also landed on a tree branch that cracked under his weight, despite not having any cracks formerly. "This is new!" He stated before managing to catch himself on another branch, luckily enough. "That's some tough back and forth there."

Once in the tree, he looked down at Qrow and a wide smile came over his face. He reached out one hand and extended two fingers upwards and towards Qrow before motioning for him to come at him. Come and get it, bird. He thought to himself, a wide smirk on his face as he taunted the old man slightly. This whole tree was nothing but a deathtrap for others, and it might even be a deathtrap to him given the fact that he seemed to hit a spot of bad luck somehow. Or was it good luck since I managed to catch myself just in time? I really can't tell right now. It's weird sometimes. He thought to himself, moving back into a stance as he awaited Qrow to come up into the tree after him. "C'mon, aren't birds supposed to live in trees?" He mocked the old man, trying to make a play on his name of all things.

The first year's initiation was going on at this time. Velvet had caught the first half but had some things to do before classes started up tomorrow. The feed had given her what she was looking for anyway. It was important for professors to know and understand their students, their personalities, and how they fought. This was especially so for the professor of combat studies, a class where the students would be sparring with one another and learning the ins and outs of battle with another person as well as grimm. The kids seemed to have their acts straight for the most part, and some of them were quite strong! She could see having a good term with these students. Latte joined up with her from around the corner. Where had you gone off to? Oh well. I wonder who these ones will be paired up with... The concept of mentors was still a relatively new one, after all. Working up close and personal served as a two-way street. It allowed teams to grow in ways they couldn't before by readily having a mentor they could train under and seek guidance from while the mentors make sure the students are progressing and safe. Some saw it as a sort belittling of the students, having someone always keeping an eye on them, though that wasn't true. The mentors provide their time when and if needed. They were more a means of growth than protection or rule enforcement. Velvet was deep in thought as she strolled between the dining hall and the building with her classroom. Something broke that thought, caused her ears to twitch: a sharp sound like the clashing of steel. It doesn't make sense for there to be fighting now... unless we have some really eager second years. Hurriedly following the sound of battle, it didn't take long for Scarlatina to happen upon...Qrow, of course.

This man was an enigma to Velvet. He was Ruby and Yang's uncle as well as a trusted ally of Professor Ozpin but was often drinking whenever she saw the man. How could such a lush hold the reputation he did? She didn't understand. A mew of warning came from below as the rabbit faunus sighed, her ears drooping a little in exasperation. "Qrow? Who has the bad luck of-" She nearly dropped the books in her arm while her free hand flew to her mouth. Following the dark haired man's gaze up to a not-so climbing-friendly tree, Velvet Scarlatina was met with a surprise she'd nearly given up hope on getting. "Lyon..." she breathed into her hand. "You're here?" Her brain began to run a million miles an hour, having waited or hoping this day would come for years now. After all, the one she'd become closest to had just disappeared, vanished into nothing. The only person who'd be able to answer of her questions avoided her like the plague. Seeing him in person... and so suddenly like this was the last thing she expected. To be completely honest, Velvet had begin coming to terms with the possibility of his death. And now he shows up out of nowhere with new scars? How did he even get them?! She glanced back over to Qrow.

After Qrow's last attack, Lyon expressed his discomfort and jumped, landing on Qrow's blade as he held it ahead of it. "What the" Qrow asked himself, staring at the blade and then up to Lyon, blinking in the process. How much drink had he had?! He definitely wasn't imagining this. He tensed his hand on her sword, now holding Lyon's body weight. "I don't think you understand the meaning of dumb luck, kiddo!" Qrow said, pulling his blade back just as Lyon leaped up to the tree behind him. Qrow watched, almost impressed by the fact this guy traversed the tree so we- well. There's the downside. Qrow grinned to himself as he watched Lyon slip quite unfortunately to another branch, which luckily held his weight. "Get used to it" Qrow said after Lyon's comment on moving back and forth.

As Lyon looked down at Qrow and smile, Qrow smiled back, baring his pearly white teeth. As Lyon gestured to follow, Qrow shook his head and twitched his wrist, releasing the gun mechanism of his sword. He aimed upwards, "I did that once, not as comfortable as you might think..." he said, then pulling his trigger. His first bullet struck true with Lyon's sword, and then the second ricocheted into another branch, breaking it off entirely. Qrow began running in a circle around the tree, creating a long distance between them as he took several more shots towards Lyon, hoping one of them might graze his aura or something. He just wanted to see the kid get desperate, test out his... Semblance. But by now Lyon's earlier comment about being lucky rang out in the back of his head. Then suddenly it all clicked into place.

Without hesitating, Qrow stopped and aimed down at the tree's trunk, releasing a bullet powerful enough to shred it's base. His goal was to get rid of Lyon's hiding spot. As soon as Lyon was grounded, Qrow rushed forwards to clash blades with him again. As Qrow locked eyes with Lyon he muttered "Is that what it is? Luck?"

((So, Yang and Quinn are on their way pretty soon. I was wondering, perhaps keep this fight going a bit longer so Quinn and Yang get a reaction in, and THEN.... i wonder, could Qrow pull a qrow vs winter style ending. Where as, Qrow notices Velvet, and so stops fighting just for her to intervene? It's up to you guys razz ))

"What a waste. And here I was thinking it'd be fun to jump around the branches like a cat chasing a bird." Lyon commented, making a very interesting simile out of their names. Watch the man flick his wrist, however, Lyon simply sighed as he stared down at Qrow. No matter what you do, those things aren't going to hit me. That's just a fact. He thought to himself, not moving as Qrow started firing the first bullets at him. One hit his blade, yet that was of little consequence. Lyon was more worried about how it would ricochet and was relieved it only struck the tree he was in. The next few bullets simply passed by him, striking branches and embedding themselves into the trunk of the tree. It was best he did not move, and the young man even went so far as to hide his blade behind his back to avoid a ricochet bouncing and hitting someone. Long-range fighters are always the worst. Even if I know I won't get hit, there's always the chance some bystander could get caught in the ricochets. He thought to himself, simply walking along the branch he was on as all the shots passed by him. Unknown to him, however, the branch was getting stressed and was clipped, making it highly unstable.

"I don't know, it's pretty comfortable up here for me." Lyon casually called out in the middle of the barrage of bullets, sounding rather complacent with his current situation. Qrow's final bullet was aimed at the trunk of the tree, and it destroyed the base of it. "That's and interes-ah!" Unfortunately, Lyon was interrupted by his comment by the snapping of the limb he was on, a stroke of bad luck? No, he landed on his feet for the most part, rolling slightly as the tree fell down where he would have been had he stayed in the tree. "Geez, make up your mind already." He muttered to the air, not sure what was going on with his Semblance currently. Was it making bad luck still favorable? It was kind of weird. Whatever. It looks like I got more than enough to deal with right here. Lyon thought to himself as he turned his attention back towards Qrow, the man already rushing towards him. "You know, that's a pretty dirty trick, old man." He stated to Qrow, bringing his sword up in a spinning motion to block Qrow's first strike.

What came afterwards, however, caused Lyon to widen his eyes slightly, not sure if he should be in disbelief or not. "Huh, ain't that something." He said rather casually, his blue eyes glinting a bit as a smirk appeared on his face. "Yeah, I guess you could call it that. Although, it's not like it's ever done me any favors in life." He stated, a dark look on his face as he stared down his opponent. "Not that that's any of your concern." Lyon began, jumping slightly and using a shot from his gun, aimed at the ground, to propel himself away and land on the peak of the statue. "I gotta say though, this has been real fun. I think it's better that I end it pretty soon though. Don't want the buzzkills to show up, right?" Lyon stated, a smirk appearing on his face as he jutted his sword out to his right. Clenching his hand around it, it seemed like he had activated some mechanism inside it other than the gun part. The broadsword made a few creaking sounds, almost like it was trying to activate a function that had not been used for several months. Parts of the sword seemed to be relocating and moving apart, yet it was still solid at the moment, just in a transition phase.

It's probably not the best idea to show my whole hand immediately... but this seems like a rather interesting time. He thought to himself. His eye, however, caught sight of a familiar cat that had started moving towards him. It meowed really loudly at him, and his face seemed to grow a bit pale. Almost immediately, he clenched his hand on the handle again and the sword went back to how it was before it started transitioning. "I think I just got a chill up my spine. Wouldn't want to get unlucky right at the end." Lyon mentioned, a slight smile on his face as he tried to hide the sick feeling that was forming in the pit of his stomach. Faking his relaxation, the man loosened his muscles and just stood on the statue nonchalantly, waiting for Qrow to come at him so the two could continue to fight. "Come on and show me if you've got enough bite to back up the stories I've heard about you, old man." Lyon stated, a small smile forming on his face as he tried to overcome whatever affliction had started. Meanwhile, Latte simply watched from a slight distance, having already done his part.

(That's perfectly fine.)
