They were at sea, on the way out to the fishing grounds, the wind in the sails pushed strongly and carressed their faces jauntily before flowing back out to sea to dance over the waves. Theriar inhaled the briney sea air and felt as happy as he had ever been, Trelly was out with him, what a beautiful day.

"We are almost there, can you feel it?" The closer he got to the grounds the more excited he got. "I love doing this! Soon to set lines and see what we catch! Then they could eat and chat and just enjoy themselves.

"What is your favorite fish? We can target them."

Trelenwy sat in the boat, watching the shore get further and further away as the waves caressed the horizon. She was broken from a sort of stupor when Theriar spoke. No, honestly, she wasn't sure where they were in relation to the fishing vessels she often saw out in the ocean, but she smiled nevertheless.

"Oh, I don't know," she admitted. All of the good fish had gone to her masters way back when. Scraps tended to be thrown away rather than given to the help. Nowadays she was lucky to be able to afford even the smallest fish whole. "I like snapper?" Not that she really knew what any of the others ones tasted like, and sometimes it was just bits she couldn't place either way!

He put small pieces of meat on the hook, "Snapper it is then, here you go." He handed her her rod then dunked his own piece of meat in, "And now we wait!"

Fishing a line at a time was leisurely, fishing with a net was a lot more work. But the catch was much bigger as well. Now they could relax and talk. "What a beautiful day!"

A few birds floated by on the wind. "I wonder how hard it would be to catch a fish as a bird, you have to use your face instead of outsmarting them the long way like we do."

Trelenwy took the pole and sat back, bracing her feet against the inside of the boat.

"It is," she said, and looked up toward the birds. Hm. "It must be faster. Calculating, and then a sudden strike. Some have big claws, but not the ones out here. Oh, but there are birds with mouths like nets, and they scoop up water with the fish."

She shifted and rolled her shoulders. "It might be nice to sleep out here some day."

Sea life and sea people were so fascinating. Birds with mouths like nets indeed, he thought he might know which one she meant, it had been sitting on a tidal barrier rock about three days ago and he was watching when it turned its head and it had a big ol' wattle, he had been most confused but what she said now made sense. He hadn't wanted to anger the large bird and didn't feel like eating it, so he had left it alone and continued poking along the shore line for bait bits.

"I think so too as long as it was voluntary and not in the middle of a storm. The most I've done is kind of nodded off while lining like this. The nets there is less time to chill cause of the pushing and pulling and dragging."

"Have you ever thought of what might be out there? Maybe there is an island that could just be ours if we went far enough?"

"I'm sure there must be, somewhere," Trelenwy reasoned. To think that they were all that existed on this great ocean would be foolish. Even the rest of Tendaji had only just learned of Matori and Oba as it was! Maybe it was a smaller sea than she thought, but the idea of something else existing somewhere had always comforted her.

"I remember when they found that island... the people with violet hair. It could happen again, couldn't it?"

"I really think it is very likely, if an island could support them, than another island could support others, maybe the new ones will have tentacles, what do you think, maybe they will have feathers, after all the alks have these feeler things, why not feathers?" He was most amused at these thoughts.

Theriar took a deep breath of the sea air. "Ahhh, freedom. Maybe after we fish we can go find a secret beach where there are no other people to disturb us." He had a feeling the peace of that would be beneficial for both of them.

"I suppose so," Trelenwy replied. The idea of people with feathers didn't seem all too strange. Now, if they could fly, that would be strange. What freedom there must be in flying, and with so much less danger than swimming in the sea!

She leaned over the edge of the boat and watched the fish considering Theriar's baited hook. When she came back up, she glanced at the sky. It was a bit cloudy, but nothing to be worried about yet.

"I'd like that," she said then, and offered a little smile. She enjoyed the time they got to spend together away from the hustle and bustle of the city. She felt more at-ease in privacy.

Theriar felt a nibble on his line. "Come here Trel." He beckoned to her, and gave her the rod, wrapping himself around her from behind. "Do you feel that? There is something interested in the bait. If it tugs again pull hard in a jerking motion okay?"

That would set the hook. He rested his hands on her forearms to await the feel of her catching the fish. He had never felt so close to another being in his life.

His heart beat a staccato rhythym as he felt the tug, pull of the nibbling. He waited for her to make her move.

Trelenwy came over obediently. She took the rod and planted her feet on the bottom of the boat, and she smiled. Theriar was treating her as if she had never seen someone fish before. Having never fished herself and having never even seen it done were two different things, but he was so excited that she wasn't going to say a thing.

Hopefully she would be strong enough to actually catch the fish. She adjusted her grip just a moment and then tugged back with quite a bit of strength. She felt the fish begin to struggle, but it was too late for them.

"Do I just pull it out now?" That much she wasn't sure of.

There were benefits to being this close to her, he felt when she tugged hard on the rod like the champion she was, he was so proud. "Yes! That is exactly what you do my siren, bring the fish in, but keep tension on the line if at all possible."

She was powerful for someone so small, and beautiful, and he was so in love he could feel a little bit of it come out of his eyes. He restrained himself from kissing her neck until the threat of her bopping him with that rod was gone. It wasn't his fault she looked amazing fishing. He knew they would be strong together, but was always surprised at the pure joy he felt when around her.

She pulled back on the rod and tried to maintain her balance at the same time. She was tall for a Matori woman, but the rod was made for a man part-Alkidike. Still, she kept the line as taut as she could and yanked the fish into the boat. She gave a triumphant 'ah!' and only then did she feel Theriar kiss her neck. She smiled and turned her head back to look at him. She sneaked a little kiss to the lips and then turned back to the flopping fish.

Theriar was drowning in joy like he had never felt before. This was so much fun. To see the delight on her face and what a catch too! "Nice fish!"

The fish in question flipped about the boat still attatched to the line, it didn't know it had no way of escape. "Now we have to hold it still to get the hook out, I have hook tweezers if you like?"

The silvery blue creature eyed them in a fishy way and he gave it the stink eye back. At least this species didn't have spines.

Theriar could stay out here with her forever. He twitched the other rod waiting for the fish to go after it too. This type liked to school in great numbers and was one of the most tastey fish.

"Alright," Trelenwy agreed, and when the tweezers were offered she sat down on the bottom of the boat and grabbed the fish in her hands. There was no fear in her as she reached in and pulled out the hook, gently as so to not break it. Her thought was the only reason to retrieve a hook from a fish was to preserve the hook. The fish was going to die anyway. "Do we kill it?"

She, after all, either bought fish pre-killed or caught them herself in the shallows, and you always killed them right then so they didn't suffer. If they ended this fish out here, though, decay would start setting in quite soon. The same would happen if it drowned in the air, however. Drowning wasn't a fun way to go, and she felt a little bad for the pathetic thing.

"Yes, give it a few sharp smacks over the head with something hard, that will do it, and it won't be suffering anymore." He handed her a fish bonker made of wood. It was a tool of the trade and much needed on a fishing vessel.

"This is the life Trel, I'm so glad I came to Matori and found you, how dull my life was before." He stretched in the hot Matori sun and felt the sunlight enter him through his soul.

"So what should we do for the rest of the day? Explore the coast, fish some more, find a camping spot or head for home?"
