Enough was enough.

He had left his war camp with one goal in mind. It wasn't to track down a mass of phantoms, oh no, it was to track down one. He had shown up time and time again, casting him into pits and furnaces in the hopes that Tethys would perish. Whether it be from the games themselves or the 'insanity' that should have been induced was unknown, quite frankly it might have been both, but Tethys was done with being the prey.

It had taken him a considerable amount of time and a lot of 'make-up'. He'd taken inspiration from a variety of sources, whether it be from lions he'd met or predators he had observed while musing over his predicament by one of the watering holes. In the end, he had managed to stake out one of the caverns he had remembered and by pure chance had stumbled upon again.

At first nothing had happened, no life seemed to exist within those walls and he had begun to doubt himself...and then finally he had seen him. The distinct smell of smoke and sulfur had caught his nose and while he had kept his head down, his eyes had followed the black lion as he had walked into the caverns and disappeared from view. He hadn't pursued him immediately, instead he had watched over several days to ensure that this was where the phantom was hiding and that he was alone.

...it was only when he was certain of these two things that he had decided to make a move.

Suffice it to say that the pale lion was confident this time, he had been able to see this entity with much more ease in their last encounter, so much so that it seemed as though the games had been cut short. All that he needed to make sure he did this time was keep low so that he didn't get knocked out before he had the chance to take the accursed beast out first...

He had received the missives from Gideon and knew that the time was almost upon them. As it stood, Destati's son hadn't fallen despite the number of trials that had been thrown at him. Adar'malik was not the type to go easy on a lion either, he hadn't given a second thought to the potential death of the Justicar's son, but then again...neither had Destati. His orders had been clear, he had been charged with intervening and testing the mettle of the younger lion to determine if he could possibly survive against what he wished to challenge.

At the start, the results were not positive... It would have been safe to assume that Adar had been confident in the child's death. Yet as the trials had continued the younger lion had exhibited an impressive level of stubbornness that would have given any sleeper reason to pause. He should have died, he was simply to stubborn to do so - that was the conclusion that Gideon had been provided with on the initial encounter.

On the second set of trials though?

Well he had been decidedly more destructive, Adar had made a point of taxing the boy's strength and yet he had failed. It was an interesting turn of events, and in those moments, Adar had given the boy something he rarely gave to anyone... respect. Still, Tethys still hadn't achieved an adequate grading and Adar would not release the boy until he was successful or dead. Gideon's confidence may have grown but Adar remained reserved.

It wouldn't be long though, even now he was preparing another set of trials and this would hopefully be the last.

...Either the boy's eyes would open or his companions would be attending his funeral.

The phantom hadn't left his cavern in quite some time, this was the general manner in which this particularly entity conducted himself and Tethys calculated he had approximately two hours before the phantom left again. With this in mind he moved from his hiding place and prowled towards the cavern entrance.

It was rather slow progress as he moved down the tunnel, edging step by step towards his quarry in a manner that would prevent him from being detected. He hadn't quite figured out how the phantom managed to achieve this at speed (and yet he had seen him do it), but at the very least he could mimic it at a slower rate. After all, he didn't need to concern himself with silence when he was ready to pounce. All he needed to ensure was that he was in position and completely undetected, that way his quarry would have no means to counter him.

Minutes went by, but eventually he did find the majority of the light had left him. Surrendering to the grey, he ducked in behind one of the outcroppings and waited. Only when he saw the faintest of movements, one that confirmed that the phantom's back was turned, did he proceed forward again. He'd be within reach in a few moments, better yet, he would be above the black lion and that would give him the advantage for once...

Tethys almost had him, almost, except for the one small detail that he hadn't quite worked out yet. His paw steps had certainly been much quieter, but his breathing had got more ragged as the nerves had set in. While Adar hadn't heard him approaching through the tunnel, as the white lion came closer to his position he had caught wind of those tell tale whispers. Perhaps it was wrong to call them nerves, but the adrenaline and the anticipation were certainly proving to be the younger lion's undoing on this occasion.

Regardless, Adar gave him the brownie points he deserved for the approach, he just happened to deduct just as many when his position was given away. Much too obvious, much to easy for them to detect. He'd be set upon by the rabid wolves long before he had a chance to react, not even Adar would stir the hornets nest to that effect.

Nevertheless it was something that could be addressed with the appropriate coaching... No it would be addressed with the appropriate guidance. Given that Adar's machinations had been interrupted, it was evident that the lion had learnt a thing or two in his time away. Gideon would be pleased to say the least as the young captain had finally managed to see the wood in the trees.

He'd seen the tinier details in the bigger picture and identified which were important.

With this in mind the black lion sprang from his position, leapt up onto the pit wall opposite the approaching white lion; and with a glistening grin and a flash of red eyes... He fled.

But how?

Tethys's eyes widened as the black lion leapt away, he was agape as it even spun round to grin at him before fleeing. He had been completely silent and yet it had known precisely where he was. This didn't seem possible, it seemed otherworldly, and in those moments he began to wonder if the suspicions regarding these phantoms was right.

He quickly shook his uncertainty from his mind, and recalling his entire purpose for being here, he sprung from where he had been crouched and bounded after the black lion. Whether this phantom liked it or not he was going to catch him and he was going to get answers. After that? Well, the phantom would be introduced to the same games that he had been subjected to... Tethys was just going to make sure he died in the process.

Thus he found himself chasing after a shadow through weaving tunnels, in and out of those he had been in many times before. All held familiar smells, sights, sounds... and even feelings, but he had never recalled the one he was running to now, which seemed to hold the faintest of lights...

Adar'malik had long since memorised these caves. He knew every twist, every turn, every crack and pit... No small detail had escaped him in the location he had grown to identify as home. Temporary as it was, he knew it inside out and Tethys was most certainly at a disadvantage in this scenario. Fortunately for the younger lion, on this occasion he wasn't out to remove him from existence; no, Tethys had made a move that had truly confirmed what Gideon had suspected.

...The boy was ready.

Thus Adar had instead led the young lion through the caverns towards the awaiting 'blind' master. Just as Tethys had suspected long ago, the caves had been linked, he'd just never had the time or patience to discover this. Or rather he hadn't had the time and patience to discover it until now. Adar could do nothing more than smirk to himself, there was little doubt in his mind that their unknowing trainee would be angry. He'd been played all along, and it would only get worse as Adar leapt nimbly on to that all too familiar ledge and disappeared from view.

It was with considerable volume to his voice that he addressed the individual who lay up there.

"You were right, he is ready," he stated and swiftly dropped down on to another ledge and out of view before the captain had the opportunity to join them. Gideon would need time to calm him down and Adar knew all to well that he was perhaps one of the least popular lions in Tethys's young life. He would have to be formally introduced at a later date...
