The sensation was familiar, the constant throbbing at the sides of each temple. Even before he opened his eyes he knew precisely where he was. He might not have been in the same location as before, in the same pit or surrounded by the same toxic fumes, but he was still here. Slowly but surely the lion opened his eyes, and with measured breaths he began to observe his surroundings. He had already taken steps to research some of his symptoms since the last time he had been abducted and had concluded that one part of his screw had been in reacting too quickly.

...Thus he lay completely still and simply allowed his eyes to remain open and fixed on one spot.

On this occasion they didn't appear to have been treated with whatever substance had rendered him blind the first time. On the contrary, with the exception of his headache, he didn't appear to have been left debilitated at all. It was enough to make him raise his eyebrow just a touch, a factor that served to make him suspicious of the intentions of the shadow who had no doubt placed him in this infernal place again.

For what purpose was he able to move unhindered this time? Why had the rules of the game been altered in this particular instance and what was it going to achieve?

He remained motionless for a considerable length of time until his eyes finally adapted and he began to see the faint outlines of features within the area he had been deposited. Finally, unlike his first leap into the flames, he could see, and he embraced the opportunity to gather his bearings...

Excellent.

It was rare that the black lion ever complimented anyone. Even those who had successfully completed his trials time and time again had merely received brief acknowledgement. However this one was different, unlike those who would be thrown to the wolves in traditional circumstances, this child had not received the formal training he was entitled to. Every move he made and every attempt he made to adapt were based entirely on his own judgement... It was that, which secured the lion's tentative respect.

Whether the boy died today or not was irrelevant, all that matter was that he had taken substantial steps to counteract what he had endured the first time. This had been without the teachings of any individual. It had been without any guarantees that it would happen again. No, the Justicar's son had simply accepted that he had a glaring weakness and he had set about correcting it... Adar would have been lying if he had declared he wasn't curious as to what he might be able to achieve if he survived.

Heck, what he could possibly achieve now.

The black lion had been reclining in one of the much higher alcoves that usual to avoid detection, and when he had initially watched the lion below him stir he had assumed that he would get to his feet much more quickly. Instead, Tethys had chosen to remain stationary and simply wait. The results of his patience were rewards and Adar raised an eyebrow as the boy finally got to his paws and began to gather his bearings.

You can see... The black lion's inner voice murmured, a dark smile appearing upon his lips. It would seem that his games could truly begin in earnest, and so without affording the lion further time to take in all the entrances to tunnel system, Adar kicked the pebbles that had been so carefully set. The white lion should have recognised the sound by now, perhaps even been overwhelmed by deja vu as the trickling effect turned in to a rumble and the loosened rocks began to tumble.

...No one could say that Adar did not put considerable effort into his creations.

Exit, exit, exit...

He had begun to count off the faint outlines of nearby 'doors' that might have led to the way out. There was a high probability that they led elsewhere, or simply to dead ends, but at least he could see them now. All that he needed to do was to determine which one he wanted to follow. He had deliberately been left in this network of tunnels for a reason, and though he had long since concluded this was some sort of game, a sport perhaps, he had already made the decision to go down fighting. He'd survive the first round (albeit barely), and he would survive the next one too.

...Well he hoped he would.

He had almost become thoroughly distracted by the options that stood before him when the ground began to quake under foot. His ears flicked backwards to be greeted by the thunderous roar of approaching rocks and he knew what awaited him. He needed to move, and he needed to move now... But he also knew that the last time he had attempted to run away it had crushed him. This was not the solution he was looking for.

Face it.

His mind urged him to turn round despite his fear, it was practically suicide and yet as the rocks rolled towards him, he realised that perhaps there was some sound logic if he could get it right. He could do nothing more than whisper a quite prayer as he took a breath and thew himself forward. Leaping up on to the first of the larger rocks, he then proceeded to almost skip along the tumbling rocks.

They would eventually still, in theory he just had to outlast the slide.

Right?

Adar's brow raised further as the lion reacted in much the same fashion a seasoned individual would do. Most of the other children would have fled, and then attempted to spring to higher ground. Both options were correct, but one was more likely to lead to injury if you lacked the spring to get high enough. Suffice it to say that the darker lion had assumed that he would be watching the youth follow much the same behaviour as other apprentices...and yet, he had chosen to answer in much the same way that he or any of the others within the Collective would.

...He was riding the wave.

Adar rose from his hiding place with a satisfied nod. The slide would end shortly, he was not a lion who could simply create endless landslides and the effort required to construct (and secure them), meant that they would only last for a very specific amount of time. As such, he used the cover of the rolling stones to slip into the next room, seating himself once more at a higher vantage point than normal. With the youth still completely conscious there was no need for him to come down and intervene.

Alas, on this occasion the second trial would be considerably more difficult than the first. If Tethys was anticipating that he would face Sulfur alone, then he was very wrong...
