There was only about ten minutes left of her last class for the day. And then... home. Nothing else. Just... home. Do some homework. Maybe take Thorin for a walk. But beyond that? There wasn't too much else to do. And that was were Kodi's mind was wandering. It had nothing to do with lack of friends or not wanting to hang out with anyone. No, she was just very acutely aware of the fact she needed to find a job.
She'd managed to find a seasonal job over the holiday season, but it hadn't lasted long enough. It had been fun, but not quite what she would have liked to do every day. Perhaps that was her biggest problem. She had no idea what would be fun every day. And didn't everyone always say that jobs weren't supposed to be fun? It was just work?
Kodi did not agree with this one bit. She was a firm believer in finding a job you felt passionate about.
The sudden movement of her fellow classmates snapped her back to the classroom. Everyone was getting up, folding their laptops and sticking them in their bags, and generally running out the door. With a small sigh, Kodi tucked her own laptop into her bag along with her spiral notebook and pens. She grabbed her water bottle, and pulled out an iPod before she slung her bag over her shoulder and headed down the steps of the small auditorium her lecture was held in.
Headphones inserted into her ears, Kodi let the energizing sounds of her music fill her thoughts. It was soothing and the inspiration for the degree she was working to get. Music Therapy.
She recognized a few people from her other classes and offered them a wave as she passed by, heading towards one of the bus stations.
As she rounded the side of the bench area to await the bus, her headphones caught on the post and yanked right out, ripping part of the cord. Kodi muttered a soft curse (a word she wouldn't say around her parents) and stared forlornly at the broken headphones. Plopping down on the bench she just continued to stare down at her iPod that still played. Her mind had already run through if she had any spares back at the apartment, but the answer was no. These were the spares. Thorin had accidentally destroyed her other ones.
Come to think of it, wasn't there a little music shop a block or two north of here? Hope renewing that she wouldn't be deprived of her music for too long, Kodi jumped up from the bench and walked swiftly towards the traffic light, crossing the street when it was clear.
It took her about fifteen minutes - she'd been off by a block - but she finally found the place. Creative Sounds. A cute little treasure hidden among the restaurants and bars. Reaching for the door, her hand paused as she noticed a hand written sign taped in the window.
Now Hiring.
She was in the door and hunting down the first employee she could find. Which happened to be the bored looking guy who'd helped her out before.
"Hey, I saw your sign out front. Are you still hiring? Could I have an application?" She asked, forgetting to look for new headphones.
He looked at her, seeming to recognize her from her previous visit. "I think so. Lemme go grab my manager and you can ask." Stretching as he rose from his seat, he strolled back through a door that had an, "Employees Only" sign on it. Kodi tried not to bounce as she waited patiently.
Whatever she'd been expecting or letting her imagination fill in what the manager could look like, the woman sporting a punk ruck hairstyle in bright pink was definitely NOT it. She flashed Kodi a big smile, looking her over. "So, you're inquiring about the job? Why should I hire you?" She asked. If she'd had gum, Kodi swore she probably would have popped it at the end of the question.
"Because... " Crap, why should she? Kodi straightened up, shifting her bag behind her. "Because no one can rival my passion for music or my desire to pair someone with the best musical compilation." Was that too bold? She wasn't sure, but it felt right.
Pink Hair eyed her, a slow smile forming. "I like your attitude. Can't give ya full time, but I'm lookin' to fill my part time position. We're flexible with the college kids. Think you can handle working with me?"
"Heck yes!" Kodi grinned.
"We'll give you a trial run. Let me grab the paperwork and have you fill it out. Nothin's set in stone yet... but I like you. Sound like a deal?"
Kodi nodded enthusiastically. "Sounds like a deal. When do you want me to start?"
Pink Hair paused. "Friday work? I'm short handed that day."
"I'll be here Friday then." Kodi eagerly filled out the application form when it was brought out, and discussed hours to work Friday.
By the time she was finally heading out the door, new headphones in hand, there was a strong feeling of accomplishment. And she had a job! Not just any job, but something she felt passionate about. Music.
The day had definitely been a good one and her evening was going to be one with some celebration of delicious sushi and a good movie!
