Only a day or two after her trip to her homeworld, Daisy was hunched over her desk and sketchbook. She wanted to clean up and finish the drawing she’d done of the trees on Bestla. Maybe even go out and find a nice frame for it once she was done. She was the only person who knew what it was a picture of, after all. Anyone else would assume she she’d simply bought a print somewhere. And that was fine with her.
Call it selfish, but she wanted to keep her homeworld for herself. And if that meant playing dumb or lying about where the picture had come from, so be it. And after a few moments thought, she decided to make the picture a mix of the reality and the visions she’d seen. Life and Death on Bestla. Or at least, that’s what she’d call it privately. As she worked and sang along with her radio, Daisy filled the sketch in with color and a touch of glitter. She’d need a mat as well. And she’d look for an old gold or tarnished silver frame. And then, she’d hang it in her bedroom so she could see it every day.
Pleased by the thought, the brunette set the sketch aside for a moment. Maybe she wouldn’t have to buy a mat. She had lots of leftover, sheer fabrics. She could make her own. And as she rooted in her fabric box and found a lovely, filmy bit of cloth, she decided she’d do exactly that. And from there, it was a matter of minutes to measure her drawing, turn the sewing machine on and get to work. It took even less time to sew the mat and set it carefully aside.
A glance at the drawing brought a smile to her lips. She’d go get the frame now and finish everything up when she got home. Grabbing her keys, wallet and coat, Daisy was out the door and jogging to the nearest Michael’s. Rejecting the help of one of the store’s Framing Experts, she glanced at the measurements she had taken and went through the available frames. And thirty minutes later, she found the perfect one. A pale, old gold frame with antique looking curliques and small flowers carved out. It was absolutely perfect. Making sure it was sound, she quickly paid for it and practically ran home, so eager to finish the sketch so she could enjoy the finished effect of everything together.
And finally, a few hours later, the sketch was touched up and finished. Taking the frame, she took the back and glass out. Then, cleaning the glass until it sparkled, she set it carefully back before placing the matt. Carefully smoothing the fabric until it was a flat as could be, she was ready for the sketch. Moving carefully, she gingerly set the sketch inside the mat and frame and then, put the frame’s back back on and secured it. Turning the frame over, she laughed delightedly at the finished product. There was her old home looking back out at her.
“Yup, definitely going in the bedroom. Wall opposite the bed will be perfect. Now where’s my hammer and the box of nails…”
It took a few minutes to find the tools, but once the framed picture was hung securely on the wall, she didn’t begrudge even a moment of work. Not when she she’d be seeing her home every day now. And have a handy reminder of her promise to go back and make it right.
