It felt -

- strange.

He was not used to being anything except Basil Whybourne, which made for a bizarrely twisted experience as Sailor Almandine. And why, for the love of all that was holy, was his magic in relation to reindeer, of all things? He'd never even seen a reindeer up front in his entire life.

Maybe one day he would understand it.

Today was not that day.

He stood now, as Almandine, on the edge of the city, not quite sure what to do with himself. The newly long hair - also an oddity that was taking some time to get used to - streamed out behind him like a black serpent, coiling and sliding in the slipstream of the wind. The bells on his suspender straps jingled a little; he'd have to get used to not being discreet anymore, not that he had ever really been discreet. But he was quite used to being quiet and unobtrusive.

No more of that, apparently. Almandine ran a hand idly through his hair, disarranging some of the gold beads hanging from his antlers, and exhaled a breath visible in the air.

"This is useless," he said aloud. "Utterly useless."

If there was anyone in the world that didn't know how to be discreet, it was Priscilla Stratford. Or, as tonight would have it, the illustrious Super Sailor Dia. Quiet was not her forte. In fact, quiet would probably be closer to an antonym than coming anywhere close to any word that could be used to describe the pink haired beauty that was currently making her rounds atop the roofs of Destiny City that evening.

It was still cold - the city would be stuck with at least three more months of chilly weather before Spring would welcome it into its warm arms once more. Despite the temperature and the fact she was clicking her way across the city in heels, stockings and a short skirt, Dia didn't mind. Star seed hunting was a good distraction from the qualms of normal life and even if she came home empty handed, at least, she figured, she could work off the extra cookies she'd slipped out of the Sugar Cube's display case before leaving her shift earlier in the evening.

The soft jingle in the distance was almost missed, but black heels stopped in their tracks as another senshi's aura popped up on her mental radar. It didn't make her nauseated, but it wasn't familiar either. Stranger Danger, it seemed.

Taking another leap upwards towards a higher building, she tilted her head curiously as she stared at the stranger in the distance with an unfamiliar silhouette and his... antlers?

Really?

Almandine was not used to powering up; not used to anything, in fact, except doing his daily job and making it by as best as he could on a relatively decent salary and a small, comfortable apartment that he could wile away his time in. As Basil Whybourne, he had gotten used to being unseen and silent - it was, after all, his job as a tech hand in theater.

See, but don't be seen.

Except it was impossible now; and it was strange to feel the flicker of - something along his senses. Almandine couldn't quite discern what it was that he was feeling, a sort of strange, prickling sensation that slid along his mind and his nerves like a warning light. It didn't feel - well, not wrong exactly. But it didn't feel normal, either.

Almandine lifted his head, a slight - and characteristic - frown on his lips as he turned from side to side, slowly pivoting where he stood to try and figure out where the sensation was coming from. Someone - something? - no, someone was standing on the building next to the he one he stood on, all features indistinguishable at this distance.

He said nothing, merely stared. Awkwardly.

Another hop, another leap and she was standing on the rooftop facing the stranger's building. Leaning forward, she peered at the young man standing yards away, his eyes reflecting oddly off of the moonlight.

Wait. Not eyes. Glasses?

If donning glasses wasn't strange enough, the antlers on his dark head of hair surely did the trick. Or the glistening, golden jingle bells sewn into his fuku. How strange - just when she thought sailor scouts couldn't get any weirder looking, it was as if Fate had to prove her wrong.

"You've got quite the deer-in-the-headlights expression going for you, Rudolph." She mused aloud, making sure her voice was strong enough to be heard from his standing. For emphasis (or maybe she just wanted to gloat about her own beautiful fuku), one hand moved up to fluff out a section of pink curls, a strand of pearls dangling softly with the motion. "Did you get lost on your way to the North Pole?"

It was a -

- he wasn't sure. A young woman, with hair the color of bubblegum, pooling around her in huge, luxurious glossy curls, her black and pink outfit a masterpiece of stitching, beading, ruffles, and about every other detail that Almandine could pick out of the fussy thing. It looked like she was some sort of Victorian age vampire.

Or a lady of the night. Or something.

"I'm not Rudolph," said Almandine automatically, frowning. He shifted slightly and heard the bells jingling around his legs. "And no, I didn't. I've never been there. The North Pole, I mean."

He lapsed into silence, staring at her a little more curiously and a lot more awkwardly, expression contemplative.

"What exactly are you?"

"Cuter than you, that's for sure."

A whoosh and five seconds later, the Super Sailor closed in the gap between the two of them, her heels now only feet away from shoes that looked like they belonged with a zoot suit and not a senshi of the Negaverse. Whoever came up with their get-ups had way too much time on their hands and clearly too much creativity, most days.

"Well let's see. You've got the..." Her gloved hand moved down, a single finger pointing out the details as she went down the list. "Jingle bells on your trousers....harness...belt thing."

Her finger moved upwards, focusing on the red ribbon fastened around his neck. "That isn't a tie. That's a bow." Leaning forward, she flicked the antler, clearly testing to see if it was coming out from his head and not simply fastened around him like a crown. "And these. I mean, c'mon. Though the poinsettias are a nice touch, I admit."

Stepping back, her hand fell to her hip and she grinned. "So if you're not Rudolph, which one are you? Dasher? Dancer? Prancer?"

Her line of questioning paused as she seemed to settle on the name, her grin growing wider. "I rather like that one. Prancer. Yes, that's cute, we can stick with that one."

"I'm Sailor Dia." She finally introduced herself, adding another hair toss for effect. A girl couldn't resist flaunting her looks when she knew she was beautiful, after all. "Senshi of candy. And, judging by your question, I presume you're a new guy around town?"

Almandine's frown suggested that he had no idea what on earth cuteness had to do with anything they were talking about. Behind the glasses, his eyes flicked up and down the woman's slight form, taking in the vibrant hair, the expression on her face, the swish of her uniform as she sashayed closer.

"Why are you listing things off of my uniform, I'm well aware of what I'm wearing," said Almandine, the frown deepening. "I'm apparently a Senshi of Reindeer, whatever that means. I wasn't exactly given a guidebook in determining where I go from here, but yes."

The antlers shifted under her prodding;clearly they were not, in fact, attached to his head. Almandine squinted at her.

"None of those. My name is something like Almandine, though again, it was given to me and I suppose that's what I'll be called while in this..." He raised a hand, gesturing vaguely at his jingling ensemble. "...whatever it is. Outfit. Uniform. Something to that nature."

The frown hadn't left his face. Either it was a permanent fixture, or he was just confused about a lot of things.

"What sort of candy?"

Well, Prancer certainly wasn't the most jovial of senshi. In fact, he was far more befitting of the name Grumpy or Frumpy or Can't Take A Single Joke but Dia had already taken the effort to rename him once and didn't feel like bothering with it again.

"You must be fun at parties."

Her eyes rolled as her head tossed itself back, pink hair moving with each motion. The candy senshi's gaze settled on the glasses, more questions coming to mind.

"Especially with these."

Stepping forward, hands rose and she promptly plucked the black framed glasses from off the senshi's face. "I didn't even think senshi needed glasses anymore. I guess it makes sense, maybe?"

Turning the glasses around, she slid them over her own face. Everything suddenly went fuzzy - it was kind of funny to look through, truth be told. "I guess if you didn't have a leg and transformed, you still wouldn't have a leg. Handicapped eyeballs must also apply to that theory, huh."

Hands outstretched, she attempted to admire her wiggling fingers as they came across as nothing but dark fuzzies in her new lack of vision.

"So someone just kind of revealed your true identity and set you loose upon the city?" The feeling hit home for her - Dia had experienced the same "awakening". Maybe it was from the same hit and run General, even. "That sucks."

"I only go to parties to work," said Almandine, because he was nothing if not obscenely straightforward. Dia was given another one of those quietly suspicious looks, because he wasn't quite sure why she was bringing up partying at all, let alone how jovial he was at them.

His eyes flickered to her hair, watching the curious movement of it -

- at least until his vision went abruptly blurry. Almandine blinked, glanced sideways, then realized the senshi had taken his glasses. If he squinted hard enough, he thought he could make her out to be wearing them, his eyes narrowing as though this would help make the picture clearer.

"Yes, well," he said, "I've had glasses since I was a child, no reason to stop now."

He started to walk towards her and his foot hit something he couldn't see on the ground, Almandine stumbling a little, the bells jingling as he tried to keep his balance without tipping over.

"Yes, I was just - thrown in, no explanation. It's been a bit of a confusing thing, picking it all up. What about you?"

Almandine turned sideways and walked straight into a wall.

It was dark, okay.

"Have you been a senshi for long?" he continued, as if he hadn't just done exactly what he'd just done.

She might have laughed at the ridiculous sight of the senshi tripping and smacking aimlessly into things, had she actually been able to see it happen. But the only thing she could make out from the lenses in front of her were darkish, brownish blobs that continued to wander around from one spot to the other. Dia thought she heard a rather solid thwack followed by a melody of jingles but without being able to see properly, could only assume the senshi had kicked something out of frustration as he explained his predicament.

"About a year," She conceded, the realization of the fact suddenly making her feel rather old. An entire year of being a senshi - she'd been promoted, once, but what else had she accomplished, besides being an energy gatherer? Surely there had to be more to the gig, right? "But I'm going places, you just wait and see. I've already been promoted to Super."

It was easy to brag about being promoted when the person you addressed had absolutely no idea that a "promotion" involved repeating a phrase that a star-marked cat instructed you to repeat.

Her head starting to ache, she tilted downwards to stare at fuzzy black heels as they took a few steps forward, then to the right. "Is there...anything you want to know? I mean, I'm right here and all, I could probably help."

Maybe wearing glasses made her suddenly smarter - regardless, Dia was feeling unusually helpful to the poor soul with an awkward sphere.

Almandine lifted a hand to rub at his nose, the odd feeling of not having the weight of his glasses on his face still new to him. He was definitely missing something, and he couldn't see well enough without them to be able to make a grab for them, anyway, so he just let the other senshi hold them for now.

"A year?" he repeated, eyebrows raising. "That's a long time. I've only been one for...about a month now."

It felt simultaneously like a long time and a short time. Almandine turned his head in the direction of all the bright pink blobs he could just barely make out in the dusky night air, interspersed with darker shades of black that made the pink stand out all the more vividly.

"Super - that's after this - ow - " He'd walked into another wall. " - right?"

Almandine scuttled along the top of the roof, bells jingling merrily, as though he was not completely blinded without his glasses. It was a good thing the rooftop was large, otherwise he might have accidentally toppled over the side of one of the walls.

He put his hands on his hips, watching the blobs of pink that was Dia sway from side to side.

"What sort of magic do you have? Are there many like us?"

"Candy shrapnel - it's much cooler than it sounds."

Shrapnel may have been a bit of a stretch when describing her goopy gumdrop attacks, but she wasn't about to let this new guy think she wasn't Hot Stuff. After all, he'd only been around, what, thirty days or so? No, by the end of their conversation, he was going to revere her and her amazingness.

The glasses were beginning to make her eyes feel all dizzy, but she kept them on, for Smart Appearance purposes. Heels grew dangerously close to the edge of the building, but the fuzzy appearance she saw didn't give her any warning as she continued to idly walk around. Glancing up from her fuzzy looking shoes, she stared in fuzzy Prancer's direction. How many of them were there? That was a good question.

"Sure, I've met a handful. You'll see a lot more of the Order pests than Negaverse ones, but that's because they're nowhere as cool as usssssssssssssssssss-!"

Her word stretched out as her shoe lost its footing, the super senshi accidentally stepping a few inches too far over the ledge. She let out a startled shriek as the pink and black blob toppled off the side of the building, landing with a resounding crash as her fall was caught by the metal fire escape ten feet below.

He couldn't even imagine what candy shrapnel looked like, let alone what it would do. "Sounds dangerous," said Almandine, with entire truthfulness, even as he stood watching the fuzzy outline of the other senshi somewhere in front of him. She was just shapeless blobs of pink; if he squinted hard enough, he could sort of make out the candy striped tights and the mass of curly bright hair the color of bubblegum.

But only if he really squinted, and that was giving him a headache, so he stopped.

"I don't think I like Order very much so far," said Almandine, just as the pink shapes in front of him gave a sudden jerk and then disappeared entirely. He heard a squealing shriek, and then a deafening crash of - something - and then nothing at all except the creak of metal.

"Uh," said Almandine. Carefully, he stretched out his hands, slowly and painstakingly making his way over to where he'd last seen the blurry form of Dia, patting at his surroundings to make sure that he wasn't about to topple anywhere else.

His foot hit the ledge; Almandine stopped, slowly crouched low, and peered over the side.

He could hardly see anything, of course, just something fuzzy and shadowy and pink somewhere down below.

"Are you all right?"

A series of giggles bubbled up from over the side of the ledge. The candy senshi struggled to turn herself over, sitting upright on the fire escape as her hands dusted the grime particles from off of her shoulders and cheeks. The tumble had smarted, but thanks to her Super Girl powers - well, the only thing that hurt the most was her pride and she was currently doing her best to laugh off the embarrassment.

"Yeah, I'm fine." One hand waved up dismissively in his direction - not that he could really see it.

After taking stock of herself, it seemed she really was fine, save for a bit of a sore nose and aching ankle. The glasses that had managed to tumble from off her nose, however?

Well, they didn't fair exactly all that great.

Gloves gingerly picked them up, one finger running across the nice, perfect bend in the frame that hadn't been there prior to the fall. It fell directly on the nose part, but at least it hadn't been a lens, right?

Whoops.

Maybe he wouldn't notice???

In an instant, she was back on the ledge with the help of her handy dandy teleporting skills. Such skills, in fact, which were about to provide her with a quick getaway before the young man could access the damage of his beloved spectacles.

"Here." She thrust the glasses in his directly, attempting to be as nonchalant as possible. "You probably need these a little more than I do, ha."

The giggling made him blink owlishly, Almandine's face looking strangely unfinished without the glasses that usually adorned them. He could see the blobby pink form of Dia shifting below, which probably meant that she wasn't dead, which was probably a good thing.

"Oh, good," he said, and then suddenly she was there again, back on top of the roof beside him. Almandine hastily shifted away from the ledge, cautiously withdrawing to a safer distance back in the center - or what he thought was the center, a hand reaching out towards Dia.

Except she was shoving his glasses back onto his face, Almandine making some sort of squawking noise in response. He patted his face awkwardly, trying to adjust them to the proper position, frowning a little at the way they weren't seeming to fall quite right.

"Uh - thanks," he said, frown deepening. "Hm. This is strange...."

At least he could see now.
