 What had started out as a very productive morning getting a good portion of her essay done - which was due in a few days - quickly turned into a lazy, Do Nothing Productive Day. Unless you counted being sprawled out on the floor, arms propped up on a pillow while binge watching American Horror Story on Netflix. Then yes, she was being quite productive!
At least she'd managed to change out of her pajamas and put on leggings (which had piano keys along the side) with a t-shirt that declared, "I'm Not Short, I'm a Hobbit".
There was a stack of papers on different types of instruments neatly stacked on her coffee table along with a textbook filled with page markers on the therapeutic qualities of music, signs of the initial start of the day. Her forgotten laptop still had her halfway finished essay pulled up. Next to this, sitting a little precariously on a makeshift cup holder was a mug full of passion fruit tea. And next to this was one very determined corgi trying to nonchalantly lap up whatever was left inside said mug.

It had been a while since Magiore had been around to see his little sister. Kodi was perfectly capable of handling things on her own; she was, after all, a very intelligent, strong-minded young woman with a penchant for stubbornness that seemed to run particularly rampant in the Carpenter family in general. Magiore hadn't wanted to bother her.
But she was his sister, and he loved her, even with that stubbornness, so he decided to go and see her.
Romano's had closed early; a half day, since the following day was a teacher workday and Magiore came over straight from his office at the school, still dressed in his usual teaching attire, albeit with a heavy black peacoat and dark green scarf over it. He padded up the familiar steps, shaking snow from his shoes, and arrived at Kodi's place thankful for the heat of the building.
He gave a knock, since entering without just seemed rude, even if she was family.

Even before the knock came, Thorin was at the door barking his warnings for whatever intruder dared to enter his domain. At least until he got a good scent of the human on the other side. Then it was just huffing.
Kodi bounded up in a blink at Thorin's barking and door knocking. "Coming!" She called, barely skirting around her love seat to cheerfully answer the door.
"Whatever you're selling... I ain't buyin' it!" She laughed, using a foot to keep her dog from escaping out the door - and probably peeing on her brother for fun. "C'mon in!" Kodi stepped back and gestured her visitor in.
She wasn't sure when she'd seen her brother last, but his hair definitely seemed longer. Which meant her's probably was too. Geez. So much for keeping up to date and in touch with family.
"Thorin, be nice." She muttered before turning a beaming smile on Magiore. "Mags! What brings you over?"

Magiore could hear that damned dog on the other side of the door and made a mental note not to tread on the thing. Or kick it. Or maybe run off with it so that it would never pee on his shoes again, even though that had only happened once so far.
But still.
Kodi's cheerful, laughing voice came first, and then the door swung open and her face appeared, as bright-eyed and friendly as always. It made Magiore somewhat relieved that, in spite of him not having come over in quite some time, she still was wearing that sort of expression.
"I'm not selling anything except maybe a subscription to a doggy daycare," said Magiore dryly, as he stepped inside and carefully maneuvered the door shut behind him, effectively cutting off Thorin's way out. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a customary bag of M&M's that was more for him than it was for her.
"Hey. I thought I'd come see how you were doing. Been well?"

"Ha, ha. Very funny." Kodi rolled her eyes, giving Thorin a contemplative look. But he was being a good boy and merely sniffed at Magiore's shoes once before going into Super Beg Mode. Because candy!
"And don't you dare give him any of those. Chocolate is bad for dogs." She rose up on her tip-toes to give her brother a quick peck on the cheek before twisting to head back towards her area of relaxation. "Help yourself to anything in the kitchen." She added, plopping down on the couch.
"I've been... busy." She admitted. "Lots of schoolwork, but otherwise I've been great." Except for not having found a decent job yet. That thought was always nagging her. But she had her fingers crossed for a new shop she'd applied at. Best of all, it revolved around music! Her passion. Of course, she wasn't about to admit to her brother she still hadn't landed a solid job.
There was also that other little thing she couldn't tell him about... that kept her up late at night on occasion.... SIGH!
"What about you? Clearly you've been too busy to come see your little sister in a while." She teased. "But I guess a peace offering of everyone's favorite chocolate candy is good enough!" kurpeco I smell the potential for a deliciously drama filled plot we totes should discuss sometime >3

There was something relaxing about seeing his little sister again, as comfortable and easygoing as she always was. Magiore glanced around her apartment, as though checking to see if she was hiding anyone in the closets that shouldn't be there.
"I'm not going to give your dog chocolates," said Magiore indignantly, as he made his way into the living area. "I'm not that dumb. And besides, I wouldn't waste them on Thorin, either, these are mine, anyway."
He went into the kitchen for a bowl and reappeared a moment later, the M&Ms poured into said bowl as Magiore plopped down beside Kodi on the couch. He took a handful of chocolate for himself, and then extended the bowl out to his sister, graciously sharing, because that was what brothers did.
Even if they were M&Ms and his favorite.
"What sort of busy?" Magiore asked, his mouth full as he chewed slowly. "I mean, it's good that you're keeping busy. And yes, I've been busy as well, I'm sorry, Kodi. I just recently got a new job, I'm teaching at that Romano's school these days; I'm an English Literature professor."
And a Negaverse general, he thought, but didn't say.kyrieko I approve of these plots /slams hand down

Said corgi followed closely at at Magiore's heels, waiting for the inevitable accident of candy falling on the ground that usually happened with humans. But so far, he wasn't getting lucky. So he went with plan B. Hopping up on the couch and putting his head on Magiore's leg while staring intently at the bowl.
"I swear, it's like you two were siblings in a past life." Kodi muttered, watching Thorin stalk her brother in the hopes of getting a sweet treat. She just shook her head, taking a small handful to pop in her mouth since he offered.
Rare kindness. He was in a good mood.
"School busy, mostly. Trying to find a non-seasonal job the rest." She paused, glancing at the TV and the clear evidence of school work not being done. "And today was a free day, I decided."
"You're an English Lit. Professor?" Kodi feigned utter horror. "Those poor students.... They have no idea what they're getting themselves into." But if he was a Professor... "Wait, so does that mean I can cheat and have you spell check and grammar check my essays?" She teased.
It was worth a shot. Not that she was bad at writing essays. Quite the opposite in fact. kuropeco Mags.... Kodi wants a tattoo... is dis okay??? -shot-

Kodi and Durumi were the two people in the entire world that Magiore could relax around, dropping his usual stoic, calm facade and easing back into the couch with a certain amount of lazy relaxation usually reserved for the most private of moments. He kicked a leg up to rest on the coffee table, and eyed Thorin with a reasonable measure of suspicion as he ate another handful of M&Ms.
"Maybe he was actually my brother," said Magiore sardonically. "But that would mean I wouldn't get you as a sister, and that would have been tragic."
He reached out and affectionately rubbed at Kodi's hair, deliberately fluffing it as best he could. "Free days are always a good idea, especially when you have people like me that need to come and check on you," Magiore deadpanned, dropping his fingers away again, an arm stretched out across the back of the couch. "As for my students, they know what to expect from a decent school," he added dryly, with a pointed look at Kodi.
He nudged her shoulder affectionately.
"I'll always look over your essays for you. Whether I'll be of any help...well, we'll see..."

The indignant squawk of having her hair all ruffled was the only appropriate response to her brother being... her brother. She smacked his hands away and gave him a light punch in the arm. "Ha ha. Then you'd have had to deal with not being the only pretty boy in the family." She teased, curling her legs up under her.
"Uh huh. 'Need' to come check up on me? Or dying of boredom and Rummy wasn't home?" She countered innocently.
Kodi sniffed. "Well it would be kinda weird attending a school where your brother was a professor... " Not that she was leaving DCU. Nope! They had a great music program. She sighed. "Ah, but it was worth a good shot. But alas, you'd probably add something horrific in there without my knowing." And wouldn't that be fun to explain to her own professor's?
"So... got any great potentials in your classes?" She asked. "Or any that you can't stand?" kuropeco I have to figure out what she'd get... cause I LOVE MIDDLE EARTH probs isn't a good first tattoo... |D

Magiore just gave Kodi a look that clearly indicated he was amused in spite of himself, which turned a few moments later into one that said he was outraged by her statement.
"I am neither pretty nor a boy," he informed her, eyes narrowing slightly. "I'm a teacher, you heathen."
But it was Kodi, and he couldn't really be mad at her. Magiore ate a few more M&Ms and shook his head, refusing to answer such an absurd question about his habits at home, and about the fact that Durumi had been busy as of late. He was not going to say that he was lonely. Or that he missed both of the two most important people in his life.
"I would not. I'm an excellent teacher." And a formidable one, according to his students. Magiore let out a hum of thought.
"A few here and there. Some are a bit rambunctious. It's certainly a lot more involved than when I was just brazing, working alone means little interruptions. At work, I can't go five minutes without someone asking me about the upcoming test or about a homework assignment."kyrieko just get a giant portrait of frodo

Kodi just gave her brother a look that clearly said she did not buy his outrage nor did she believe his statement.
"Riiiiight. Like you don't spend hours in front of the mirror brushing those luscious lockes~" She idly reached over and tugged at his hair. "And hey, some men never mature." A pointed look was shot at Magiore, a twinkle in her eyes.
As to her other comment... she just snickered at his lack of answering. But she did enjoy having him come visit, that much she couldn't deny.
"And I'm your baby sister. I couldn't risk the temptation it would cause you." Okay, she swore she'd stop teasing him soon. Maybe. Probably not. Laughing a little, she pulled her legs up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them while regarding her brother. She could see him as a teacher. A very demanding teacher wanting to see his students be successful, but not a bad teacher.
"That's 'cause they aren't really paying attention." Kodi observed. "So they try to look smart and ask about the tests, since those they at least are aware of."
