It had been quite some time since the last Varuna had seen head or tail of the Senshi of Treachery. A year, to be exact. She didn’t blame him, especially since the last time she’d seen him, she was helping him into a mirror after being sliced open by an obnoxious little Negaverse officer, leaving her to stare at her own reflection, covered in his blood.

Part of her wondered if perhaps his injuries had been worse than she’d thought, that maybe something happened to him. She’d lingered around the mirror she’d helped him into for the first couple months every few days for an hour or so, wondering if he would reappear with that cheeky grin of his and maybe apologize for worrying her.

But as the months went on, and the seasons changed, and she had her own responsibilities as student, her visits grew less and less frequent. She hadn’t been at all in December.

It was stupid, really. For her to think about someone so much, and she hardly even knew him. He was technically her enemy, and yet she’d also been the one to kiss him. In thanks, of course. That was the only feeling behind it, or so she told herself.

Varuna sat on the ledge of a building, a shawl wrapped around her shoulders as she watched the snow fall down around her and over the city, watching everything clean. Maybe this new year would give her something else to think about. Her thoughts definitely kept her distracted from any approaching aura. Dangerous, definitely, but it wasn't as though she couldn't handle herself.

To be fair, no one had really seen the Senshi of Treachery for the last year or so. After Loke had gotten through the mirror to safety, he'd managed to get himself to aid, and from there, to the hospital. Even stubborn as he was, he knew better than to just assume the injuries would be fine without some proper treatment.

His family's response to the injuries however, and his claims that they were gained via his treks around the city landing him in the path of one of those terrorists, had lead pretty quickly to his mother's increased insistence on keeping a closer eye on him, and a few more ultimatums in his life. Arguments had broken out in the house while he'd been on the mend, and Devlin had been forced to cave in to his parents' demands--else find himself in the piss poor situation of trying to find a new place to live.

He'd focused more on school, gotten a job... and pretty much locked away his pen. Not officially. He saw no point in saying he was done for good, or whatever dramatic response might be. It wouldn't make the war magically disappear from his life.

It made it less prominent, and he actually started doing better in his classes--actually managed to show up on time to most of them, which startled his professors. Devlin was doing better. He was keeping his head above water and swimming. He healed up, though the twin slashes on his back would remain forever as paler scar tissue.

It'd been the snow that had made him really think back to what hadn't happened, people he hadn't seen since he put away the pen.

The urge to power up now and then came when he was bored and frustrated with the daily woes and stress of life, wanting to find those he'd not seen in a while, blow off steam. But it'd been the snow falling that had really made his mind keep trailing back to the pen he'd put away.

A few nights, he carried it with him, a hand around the warmed object, but never saying those words. It'd been a year. He knew, or at least he told himself, if he didn't use it again and kept the pen locked away, that the interest and memories would fade. Interest always did for him--he knew that about himself. Had to fight to remain interested in damn near anything.

But that snowing night, into yet another new year, and he'd fallen into the temptation. The words were barely a whisper, and just like that, the energy that came with donning the uniform of Loke hummed through his veins.

It was like riding a freaking bike. Didn't take anything to get up to the rooftops, see the city from a vantage point only so many people could really glimpse. Didn't take much to find a White Moon aura, and head off towards it. He figured, why not? Just had to be sure whoever it was wouldn't freaking attack him before he could get a word in. It'd been a year. The hell had he missed?

Of all the White Moon Senshi to find though, he'd been startled to see the familiar looking blue, white, and iridescent that blended in so well with the snow falling around them. Loke hesitated, unsure if he should just... walk up to her, or stay back. Especially considering he didn't want to-- actually.

Before he did anything, Loke got himself away from the ledge of the building and got into a hopefully safer location that wouldn't result in him tumbling down if she hit him with her magic.

"Been a while, Snow Slip."

Ok so he couldn't remember if that's what her magic was called but he was pretty sure that's what he'd heard a few times...

There was a moment in which Varuna was convinced that her mind was playing tricks on her. She had been thinking about Loke, and naturally her brain would make it seem as though she heard his voice. But that seemed impossible.

But then she realized she wasn’t alone. The aura had been there, but she was too lost in thought. She froze in place, her breath catching in her throat, her heart stuttering in surprise. It was a trick, it had to be.

Slowly, as if expecting to see a ghost or something that might disappear if it realized it was being watched, Varuna glanced over her shoulder, her hands gripping tightly to the shawl to keep out the cold.

And sure enough, as if no time had passed at all, the very person she’d been wondering about for months. Waiting and watching for him for hours on end… he was suddenly there in front of her.

Varuna stared, not quite sure what to do, much less what to say. What was there to say? She couldn’t just say hello. Maybe ask how he was? After all, the last time she’d seen him, he was bleeding all over the place.

Or maybe he wasn’t really there. Maybe he really was a figment of her imagination.

Carefully, Varuna slid her legs back over the edge of the rooftop and stood. One cautious step at a time, she moved towards him, watching his face for any sign that he’d changed, that maybe he was not the same man who had helped her before.

Finally standing in front of him, she lifted her hand to press against his shoulder. That seemed solid enough. But he could still be a doppleganger or something, even if he was real.

Before he could do anything to stop her, Varuna slipped around behind him, and grabbed hold of the band around his waist, tugging it out of the way so she could yank on his shirt, clutching hold of the fabric in case he tried to stop her, and yanked it up to see the proof that he was who he said he was. Because wounds like what he’d received didn’t just heal without leaving scars.

The lack of verbal response wasn't too surprising, at least at first. Varuna didn't seem to be the chatterbox type. But he did expect some response out loud. She was moving slower, almost cautiously, than he'd expected. s**t. He ******** up? He had a teasing smile on his face, and kept it in place, though it faltered a bit as she began to move towards him. He felt... nervous. With how intently she was focusing on his face, and how she still hadn't said a damn thing, Loke was kinda expecting to get hit with her magic.

Which. Well. When he thought about it for a second, he guessed was kinda warranted seeing as he fell off the face of the Earth for a while, so far as anyone powered was concerned.

"Y'alright? Are y'pissed off at me or somethin'?" His voice was mixed with a bit of laughter, not making it an accusation--he'd kinda not blame her if she was, and when she placed a hand against his shoulder, pressing against him a bit, his smile flickered away as he peered down at her in confusion. "What's up?"

The contact didn't bother him, and one of his hands moved to lay over hers lightly, unsure what was going on. He watched her kinda warily, wondering if she was going to smack him or something--

--or bolt around him? What? Before he could respond, Loke grunted as he suddenly felt the sash getting grabbed, the cold nipping at his back as she lifted up the shirt and overlay. "Hey what gives? If you wanted my shirt off could'a asked!"

The pale scares met her beneath the black shirt, marking either side of his back from shoulder blades down to a bit above the middle of his back. It'd been hell and a half to move and deal with the recovery from those, and now and then he still felt spams in his muscles that restricted his breathing and movements. He'd be remembering that Negavers Captain for many years to come.

She was half expecting him to fight her off as she struggled to try and get his shirt pulled up, wanting to see for herself that he really was the same man. He knew the name of her attack at least, so that had to mean something, right?

Finally she was able to push the fabric up enough to see the scars in question, the two lines from his shoulders and down his back. She stared for a few moments, and then lowered one of her hands to brush the tips of her fingers along the lines.

At the time, she thought he might have been injured to the point of dying. He’d promised it would be okay, that he just needed to get to the mirror, but she still worried. He’d end up getting hurt because of her, or so she told herself. The fact that he was okay, that he was alive and standing there in front of her gave her a huge sense of relief, and she leaned forward to rest her forehead against his back, her hands circling around his sides to clutch at the fabric of his shirt. It wasn’t a full embrace, but it was enough for her to feel that he was alive and in front of her and she could see clearly that the wounds had healed.

Of course, that also begged the question as to what he’d been doing for a full year. Perhaps it was simply a case of her overthinking things and caring more than he might have expected her to care. It was stupid, really it was. She was getting in over her head and this man clearly had more important things to do than make sure she knew he was okay.

After all, they hardly knew each other. She'd attacked him before and had every right to avoid her.

Still no commentary. Loke let out a breath, the moisture collecting in a pale puff before him before vanishing against the city lights. A shiver snaked down his spine at the feeling of her touch against the ruined skin, goosebumps forming briefly across his back that had no connection to the chill in the air.

Yeah, he ******** up.

It was starting to blare into his head, with her focus on his injuries. Healed injuries, but considering the state he'd been in last he'd seen her... how the ******** was she supposed to know? Not that he figured she'd care this much.

His fingers tanged in his hair as he pushed some of the wild curls back from his face, teeth gritting a bit at his frustration mounted. Not at her. At himself. He didn't figure she'd care. He didn't really figure anyone cared. Wasn't like he'd done jackshit in his time as a senshi--why would anyone care?

But it'd always been a bit of a relief to see her around the city, to know she was still alright--least, far as he could tell. Didn't know much about her at all, but didn't keep the grin from his face each time he spotted her. Even if she slammed him with snow.

When Varuna rested her forehead against his back, he jumped a little, though his body relaxed as she grabbed hold of his shirt at his sides. "Ah hell, Varuna." Loke's voice came out as a rough sigh, and he clicked his tongue, cussing softly under his breath. He rested his hands over hers, squeezing lightly. "I ******** up, didn't I?"

Mindful of where she was--and really, not remotely minding the skin contact--he turned his torso slightly, lifting an arm and giving a gentle tug on one of hers. "Hey, c'mere. I can't hug you when you're behind me."

Should he explain? But explain what? "D'ya wanna know what happened? We can trade year notes." Though he laughed a bit, trying to bring a bit of lighthearted energy back into things, he wasn't entirely sure if that was fitting here right now. Hell he wasn't even sure if he was reading s**t right, or if he was responding right, but he was pretty damn sure he ******** up.

There was still the whole possibility that she was putting herself in danger. It was stupid and reckless and not like her at all, but even though it was over three years ago, she could still clearly remember the night they all ended up fighting that Shade Queen, and how Loke had helped her when he didn’t have to. She still remembered how she’d asked him if he would have killed her in any other situation, and he’d looked somewhat insulted that she would even suggest that. Maybe he really had been sincere; why would he waste time helping someone he was just going to kill later?

There was a part of her that was still wary. She couldn’t just ignore the darkness of his aura, even if he never once lifted a hand against her. It could just be that she was a foolish girl who still hoped for good in the world, even after all the horrible things she’d seen and experienced.

She felt him shifting, his hands on hers as he tried to turn and get his arm around her. She immediately tensed, a knee-jerk reaction, not because she minded the contact but because she was still being overly cautious despite being the one to approach him. But he wasn’t trying to force her to move, either. Instead he was trying to gently coax her around.

Varuna hesitated for a moment longer, but then carefully stepped around in front of him, pulling his shirt back down as she did so because she knew he was probably cold and uncomfortable with it pulled up as it was. She refused to look at him, keeping her head lowered and forehead now against his chest, her hands pulled up to rest there as well, just below her chin. It was a safety precaution too. If he dared try something, she could easily unleash her magic on him.

But even though she was being extra vigilant, there was another part of her that was convinced that she didn’t have to worry.

She shook her head when he asked if she wanted to know. She did, but she also didn’t, afraid of what his answer would be. He probably went home to spend time with his family while he recovered, to a worrying spouse or significant other. He had no reason to think that she would be concerned when they didn’t even know each other, and there was no point in knowing she thought maybe he’d been too injured to get help, that maybe he bled out soon after she’d helped him into that mirror. All that mattered was that he was alive.

“Are you okay?” she finally asked, although it was muffled, still refusing to look up at him.

Feeling her tense at his back made him falter--and then flicker his gaze about, wondering if she was feeling something on the magical radar that he wasn't, or if he was just continuing to ******** up royally. But she did move around, replacing his shirt and as she somewhat tucked herself against his chest, Loke wrapped his arms around her. Letting out a breath again, he rested his chin on her head, fingers rubbing idly over her shoulders.

He'd kinda expect that she just... wouldn't talk, and though it made him uneasy to not really know what was going on--even if he could guess some general directions here from what she was focusing on--he'd more than half a mind to just prattle on and fill the silence. Or just... let it be. Though he mused that maybe prattling on too much might light a spark, and as he began to let his mind wander about if she might be the sort to easily rile or not--

"Hm?" The muffled, soft sound of her voice rattled him out of his head, and pale blue eyes blinked a few times before his brain caught up to what she'd said. The fabric of his uniform ruffled a bit as he gave a shrug, though his arms tightened slightly around her briefly. "Yeah. Finally about to graduate. Never thought I'd say that. s**t got rattled when my folks saw me in the hospital. Work and school were about the only two things I was able to do jackshit with without fighting with my folks, or my mom going hysterical. But no way in hell to get out of the war, even when ya kinda ignore it." He'd felt the shake of her head when he'd offered to tell her, but he'd ignored it, figuring saying something was better than nothing.

"Didn't mean to freak ya out. I'd'a called if I coulda." It was presumptuous of him, and he damn knew it, but you don't go ripping people's shirts up and, even silently, making a big deal of injuries if you don't at least care a little. He just uh... hadn't figured she'd care. At least, not that much.

His gloved fingers caught a little against the light lace at her shoulders and he scowled a bit against her hair. "How the hell ain't you freezing in that?"

It should be strange, standing so close to this man, letting him place his arms around her, hands on her shoulders, chin on her head. She shouldn’t feel comfortable when someone she barely even knew talked to her almost as if she was a friend. And yet, as she rested her head against his chest and felt the steady beat of his heart, she couldn’t feel anything but content.

Hearing about his family was a little surprising. It was easy to forget that they were all people with families when a war was involved. It didn’t help that she was more or less on her own, saying good riddance to the woman who gave birth to her years ago and moving into the basement apartment of her auntie’s townhome. Having a bed was better than her truck, at least. Not that anyone but her auntie had any idea about what she’d gone through.

“Jerk,” she mumbled just as quietly as before, her hand hitting against his chest with a sharp tap, but not with any intention to hurt him. “It’s been a year and all you can ask me is how I’m not freezing?”

Part of her wondered if that was the longest sentence she’d strung together in his presence. Not that it mattered, of course.

Varuna drew away from him then, taking a few steps back so she could finally lift her deep plum eyes to meet his pale blue. Her expression was a mixture of curiosity and hurt, of sadness and wonder, and she hated herself for not being able to understand how she felt, or figure out how he felt. And it was all stupid because why the hell would he say he would have called her when he had no reason to waste his time wondering if she was worried. She didn’t blame him for that, but she hated herself for it.

She was glad he was okay, but she knew she should just leave it at that and move on.

"Hey I offered to compare year notes, y'didn't take me up on it, but I'm open to hearin' what'cha've been up to." His words were given in a huff, but he was laughing a bit, a rumble of mirth in his chest beneath where she'd hit him. His hands moved a bit more against her skin as if to offer heat through friction. Loke gave an exaggerated shiver, teeth chattering in a clearly false way. "I'm feelin' frostbit for ya. But damn do your legs still make that skirt look good."

He was a guy that was very much interested in the female, and male, form. He wasn't about to apologize for admiring what the random uniforms put on display.

When Varuna drew back, Loke kept his hands at her shoulders until she all but stepped out of his reach. He lifted a dark brow, looking down at her curiously, his lips pursing a bit in a half-frown as he took in her expression. The hurt and sadness caught his attention first and foremost, but she wasn't lashing out. Wasn't getting huffy or yelling at him or... anything that he knew how to typically handle.

Testing the waters, he took a step towards her, enough for his hands to go back to her shoulders. Light, not trapping, not wanting her to feel caged or threatened. Not that she couldn't probably kick his a**. "Are y'alright, Varuna?" He was someone who was hands-on. It never bothered him, though he was aware not everyone appreciated it. He kept his gaze on hers, watching for signs that would tell him to back up and give her space.

"...so. Idea. And I'm hoping I'm not settin' myself up to get slammed for this. But I've got some cash on me, and there's a nice cafe a few streets over that's open and shouldn't give us any grief bein' uh... dressed up. Wanna go?" Since when did Devlin ever consider his words before he spoke them? Never. Likely wouldn't change. But he put the ball firmly in her court, offering a form of apology in one of the few ways he knew how.

Offering to exchange information about the past year was exactly what she was upset about. He was acting as though it was completely normal, as though catching up was just a matter of having a quick conversation and then parting ways again for who knew how long. Varuna wasn’t going to set herself up for that. She was used to relying on herself anyway, so surely that meant getting involved with this man, in any way, was dangerous.

His antics should annoy her as well. And as she listened to what he had to joke about and watched as he faked a shiver, she tried very hard to keep her expression the same, to not let her lips quirk at the edges, or let the amusement light her eyes. Because his talking should be annoying. He should frustrate her and make her want nothing to do with him.

Should. And yet she didn’t pull away as he stepped closer once more to place his warm hands on her shoulders.

Her forced frustration faltered a little when he asked her if she was alright. Now that the question was out there, she couldn’t decide what to say, or figure out anything to say that would be worth saying. Even though that was one of the things she wanted to hear from him, the negative thoughts carefully ingrained into her over years and years meant that when she opened her mouth, no sound came out.

Thankfully, the offer of going to a cafe came shortly after, allowing her to close her mouth without it being too obvious that she wasn’t able to easily respond. Instead, she stared at him in surprise and bit of wariness. He was asking her to sit down with him, but whether that was just because it would be warmer and more comfortable for him, or because he really did want to talk to someone painfully boring like herself, she wasn’t sure.

Varuna chewed nervously on the inside of her cheek for a few moments but then nodded. “Okay,” she forced herself to say, “You lead.”

He'd noticed the lack of response to his question if she was alright. But then, she wasn't talking much that night. At least not to him. Loke wasn't about to expect her to spill her guts to him on a single question, even if his thumbs rubbed gently against her skin. Something was off. Making conclusions from his observations would do him little good if he had nothing to back them on, when dealing with her specifically.

It was part of why he figured the cafe would be easier. Out of the cold, sure, but in a more relaxed setting. A setting about as close to normal as he could offer, given... things. Could see if she'd respond differently, if maybe she'd feel comfortable enough to say something more with a hot drink and food before her.

Loke had no idea. He knew so little about her. The answer to that was easy: start making up for the last year. Far easier said than done, and he wasn't entirely sure she'd accept such a thing, but what else could he do? b***h and moan until he provoked her? He'd less reason to believe that'd work well.

Giving her shoulders a squeeze, he grinned at her acceptance of the offer to head to the cafe, releasing her to begin to move across the rooftop. He lingered though, stayed close. Now and then, he let his hand glide against hers, a curious attempt to see what could provoke her. The fact she kissed him was still fresh in his mind when he let himself dwell. But it'd... well. It'd been a while since then, hadn't it? "It's a nice place to sit and chill, let me know what you think of it after, aright?"

A couple streets over was pretty easy to traverse when you could zip across rooftops. He was reckless in his usual methods of traveling, used to the adrenaline surge of free running and the boost given to his physical capabilities by the power of being a senshi. But he took it back to the streets and alleyways more than he might have normally, unsure of her comfort with such things. Besides. Trying to leap a whole damn street kinda took a more specialized set up of the buildings, ledges, and he wasn't looking to impress her with a likely shattered leg--or worse. "Y'ever do parkour? Or uh, free running, it's called? Know a lot of people kinda do it while powered up, but y'ever look into anything like that?" He looked towards her, brow lifted in curious, genuine question.

It was quite obvious that Loke was being cautious, traveling a lot slower than he probably normally would have in order to make sure she was comfortable. The way he lingered and every now and then touched her hand to lead her forward, it was almost sweet.

If she wasn’t still frustrated about the lack of contact for the past year, even if she didn’t seriously blame him for it.

Yes, she wore heels and had a fuku that didn’t always allow for easy maneuverability, but she was no delicate flower. Not that she minded being treated as one every now and then, just for the fun of it, and because she didn’t mind people underestimating her. Not that she suspected Loke to underestimate her, but he was being careful.

As for whether she did parkour… She gave him a curious look and then shook her head. “Not intentionally,” she said, but it wasn’t as though she’d never had to run from youma or negaverse officers before. She continued to follow him, watching him as they went, wondering just what he might do.

“Ever ride a horse?” It was her turn to ask, although it didn’t really have anything to do with being powered up. Still, although she couldn’t jump from building to building easily, she could still ride if she had the chance.

"If you're ever bored, y'should look around online for some of the groups that meet up and practice it. There's a lot of groups that help out beginners, specifically, though most are mixed bunches. That's how I got into it, before I became Loke." He tossed the information lightly, about as lightly as he picked the easy routes across the buildings. He could already see the top of the building that housed the cafe he'd pinned. It was a good place--cheap prices, but damn good tastes. More than work the bucks.

Plus with quiet sitting areas, shouldn't be difficult to find a place to camp for a bit. It felt... strange, to dwell on the fact he was conversing with someone he couldn't just power down and chat with whenever. What exactly would happen if he did? Who would care? He sure as hell didn't get the vibe Varuna would use it against him or his family.

Why all the secrecy?

At the question of riding a horse, he paused and looked back at her, eyes wide, bewildered by the concept. "Never. Do you? There places around here for that? 'Sides Crystal's stuff. Don't think they'd let me in there." Nor could he afford probably to even stare. He snorted at the concept of that. "Haven't even been 'round a horse before. They look cool though, and it'd be neat to try to ride one. And hope to hell I don't fall off."

When they reached the alley and grounds behind the building, he lead her down to the street, relieved there weren't really people around to notice them as Loke continued to the front of the store and opened the door for her to go first.

It was a basic cafe, mostly focused on a forest green with beige and a wine-ish color for accents. Always felt warm and inviting to him, which was helped by the low tables and plush seats splattered around for comfy sitting areas. The cafe made their own baked goods there in the store, with glimpses of the kitchen behind the counters drifting out the scents of various pastries and sandwiches being prepped for some of the customers. Customers that very much took double-takes at their attire, though Loke didn't bat a lash. He reached into one of his boots to pull out the mini wallet he carried now and then when he powered up, grinning to Varuna as he straightened. "Order whatever you want, my treat."

She couldn’t figure out why he was telling her this. Did he want her to try and find out who he was by telling her what he did as a civilian? Or did he simply think she might be interested in learning about it? It was difficult to tell, and she watched him curiously as he lead the way to the cafe.

Varuna didn’t respond, but instead nodded her head, both to his suggestion and question about if she rode. “More out near the suburbs, yes,” she answered, smiling a little bitterly at the mention of Crystal. “I went to Meadowview,” she said before she could even think to not, her eyes widening for a moment as she realized the information that she’d just given him. Not that he was worried about him threatening her, and as long as he didn’t go after her extended family…

There wasn’t anything else she could think to say until they entered the cafe, and she bit at her lip worriedly, wondering if perhaps she was revealing too much, but again… he was giving her information about himself…

She looked over the menu and ended up just ordering some tea and fruit, not really in the mood for anything too heavy so late at night. But as she was handing the menu back, she ordered some oatmeal with cinnamon too, because it would be warm and she happened to like food like that.

“I’m mostly a stable hand, but occasionally I’ll ride for shows for the owners. Usually a few times a year,” she revealed, her voice still quiet as the cup of hot water was placed in front of her.
