She fumbled with the poorly wrapped present as she made her way up the stairs to her friend's apartment. As far as gift shopping went, Margaret Butler was awful at it and knew it. Thankfully, there weren't that many people in her life that she had to worry about giving gifts to, but for the handful that had put up with her over the years, she felt the obligated need to reward.

After the Christmas shopping mishap, she'd secluded herself in her little apartment in the ghetto, mulling and debating over the perfect gift for her newest friend. Dan had been easy enough to shop for - colored markers and a new Planner for 2017. She was the organized type, so what better thing to give an organized gal than more stuff to get organized with??

Kathrine had proven far more difficult. She was a great cook and all, but what did a great cook need that a great cook didn't already have? It had been days of thinking, of glancing around at Walmart and Target (she wasn't about to go back to the mall anytime soon) when she'd finally settled on a handful of different shaped spoons and spatulas. Back when she stayed with Pa, he'd always had a jumble of them in a big 'ol cup - so a good cook could never have enough spoons, right?

So there she was, taking a deep breath outside the apartment door of her buddy, a bundle of spoons wrapped awkwardly into one large, oddly shaped package with a giant red bow on top.

Sucking up her worry, one hand moved out and gave the apartment door a series of knocks.

"HEY, KAT. You 'round??"

The smile she gave her was as wide and as cheerful as the day they'd met over waffles. "Well of course Ah'm here, silly."

The package came out from behind her back, the tall, gangly girl with curly blonde hair thrusting it directly at the woman in front of her. The bow had begun to peel off from the package (the self-adhesive never did work as well as tape did), its shiny glimmer bobbing as gravity continued to tug it downwards. The wrapping paper wasn't Christmas themed, but instead had happy little candle sticks on it, the funny shaped ones that held like, six or seven candles at a time. Mags wasn't sure what that was all about, but it looked super fancy and better than the goofy reindeer paper, so she'd decided to go with the blue and gold instead.

Only the best for her friends, after all.

"Ah got you a Christmas present!" Her smile faltered slightly. "Ah mean, it's a little late and all... but that's what makes it a surprise, right??"

"Pizza?"

She'd expected to see some cheese laying around, maybe some cans or pots of sauce or at the very least, a crust or somethin'. Then again, Mags knew better than to question her culinary genius of a friend - maybe there was some cool, foreign way to make pizza without the basic stuff that Mags usually chewed on from the frozen pies she'd get from the local grocery store.

The fact there was no present with her name on it didn't phase Mags. Presents weren't about receiving items, it was all about showin' the folks ya loved how much they meant to ya. Cookies, as far as the blonde was concerned, was more than fine compensation.

"Ah do love me some cookies." So that was the smell wafting from the small apartment. Clearly, Mags had excellent timing when it came to spontaneous visits!

Waffles that were turned into cookies?

Was there really such a thing?

Her hesitance and suspicion was clear as she accepted the plate. Yes, waffles were amazing - they were, after all, waffles - but could adding something else to the already perfect dish make it even more better than it was before?

Fingers gingerly lifted the cookie up in the air and she sniffed it, questioning it. The sugar wafted a sweet scent up to her nose, the warmth and appeal of the waffle-like creation proving to be too tempting not to try. Tearing off a small shred between her teeth, she chewed it thoughtfully.

Blue eyes suddenly widened.

Her shock and awe translated into a rushed hiss, crumbs falling out of her mouth as she asked, "How did you learn about these?"

Unfortunately for Kat, while Mags was simpleminded, she wasn't completely emotionally-stunted. The fact her newest friend had learned to make waffle cookies in her honor just because of Mags' infamous love of the breakfast food....

Well, it was just darn special, that's what it was.

"This is the best present anyone's done given me." She nodded her head in emphasis, her ponytail of curls bouncing with the motion. Mags felt half bad, actually, that her spoons weren't nearly as sentimental in value as the batch of waffle cookies that Kat had baked her. Oh well. Hopefully Kat understood that Mags wasn't very good at gift givin' and all. Just another thing that made the brunette so smart.

Reaching over, lanky fingers stole another cookie from off the cooling rack, bringing the hot pastry to her mouth without so much as bothering with the sugar Kat had so carefully added to the first one. She took a large bite, then paused.

"Ain't you gonna try one too? Ah can't be the only one standin' around eatin' these!"

"Aw, shucks. Ah'm glad you came into the Waffle House too, Kat."

And it was true. Mags had interrupted plenty of customers' meals before, barging in on their booth while they were trying to order or eat. Most of them had been too offended or shocked to keep up with a decent conversation, but Kat had been one of the surprising few to tolerate her bold behavior - embracing it, even.

The awkward lull set in between the two, but not long enough to actually bother the blonde, whose mind quickly turned back towards what her stomach kept hankerin' for.

"What do ya say we collect a big 'ol plate of these, a couple of drinks and hit up the TV for a bit?"

Flipping on the television, she waited for her companion's return before switching channels, lazily perusing through their options as she brought one of the glasses of milk up to her lips. The cold drink was a perfect companion to the hot waffle cookies and Mags kicked her feet up, relaxing into the couch as the duo munched away the afternoon.

It was the perfect way to spend the day, as far as Mags was concerned.
