█ BACKGROUND
Tobias Aegis was born the only child to a family of mutts. There was never any particularly stunning lineage, no lofty family traditions or legacy. Just a tangle of different races and people all intermingling. His father, Louis, was a wind mage, and his mother, Ava, was an adversper. His familys history, beyond that, had always been a smattering of different races, mages among them mixed throughout. But there hadn't been a psychic directly connected to their family in quite some span on the family tree. Although it was true that there were psychics scattered throughout on all sides at some point or other, so it wasn't a terrible shock. Still, having never dealt directly with psychics in their own families did make rearing one a rather interesting challenge for his parents. He was a terribly sensitive infant, always fussy and taking everything in. He was born with the natural ability to feel the thoughts and emotions of those around him. Equally worrying to his parents was his mild telekinesis. As he grew from infancy into his toddler years, he tended to have objects orbit around him unintentionally, especially things he liked. Small toys, dice, action figures, even silverware and dads car keys. He hardly seemed aware of it, and he had difficulty controlling it well into his teenaged years.
Tobys father was a metalhead who had worked for years as a roadie for a mildly successful band as they toured the country. After Toby was born, he quit his job to become a stay-at-home dad while his wife pursued her career as a rather successful DJ. Being the sole spawn of the two radically creative types, he was always encouraged to express himself in whatever manner he saw fit. Even if that meant levitating all of the household forks in a weird almost-rhythm when he got sleepy. While he was always incredibly receptive to hearing the thoughts and emotions of those around him, Tobias did not harness the ability to project his own thoughts until his teenaged years. He was always a fairly quiet, demure child, despite being ever-curious. He was a fount of questions as a child, something which his parents always encouraged as they were able. He wanted to know everything, which could be a little difficult when half of his questions involved the very personal thoughts of everyone around him. The end result was that Tobias grew up rather quickly, like many psychics. It was impossible to hide anything from him, or shelter him from some rather harsh truths of the world which some people didn't learn until their adulthoods. Fortunately, he was rather mature for his age throughout the years as well, and never took much interest in turning peoples thoughts against them for petty reasons. Unlike some. There was a particular incident in elementary school which would stick with him. He was placed in a special class for other young psychics and caims, in order to help teach them the proper ethics and coping mechanisims needed for races who often ended up in the heads of those around them. Another psychic close to his own age had an oddly cruel streak. After watching his classmate thoroughly humiliate one of their non-empath peers from a different class, he felt a pointed disgust. He took notice of a pattern among many other psychics in his class to use their powers thusly, whereas the caims typically seemed inclined in the opposite direction. The result was a profound dislike of psychics, and a fondness towards caims, which would quietly follow him well into his adult life.
His childhood romps were cut very short around the age of thirteen. Sharp, recurring pains in his lower back and legs eventually prompted his parents to take him to see his doctor, whereupon he was diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy. His physical activity was dialed back immediately as his family did everything in their power to make sure Toby didn't eventually end up in a wheelchair, cycling through different braces and apparatuses as needed. This put a big dent in Toby's outlook on life, as he'd been very active before his diagnosis. Being confined, he turned his attention to books instead. He became fascinated with old mythologies and tales of ancient gods. Through his teenaged years and into adulthood, this fascination would slowly progress into the common threads and roots of all of those old stories, the ideas and morals which would become so deeply ingrained in human cultures that they would eventually influence the laws and morality of all modern countries. By the time he was going into college, he was obsessed with what he called 'The Root of Humanity,' i.e. the things which motivated people to act, think, and behave in certain specific patterns, both on an individual level as well as on the whole as a species. He became somewhat reclusive during his college years. He studied every aspect of psychology vehemently, eventually picking up a double Major in criminal studies as well. He had virtually no friends during those years, pouring every bit of himself into his studies. He became obsessed with the idea that the root of all humanoid interaction was driven, to some degree, by fear. Starting a family came from the fear of being forgotten. Marriage was a fear of abandonment. Purposefully focusing on building muscle was a fear of pain or death, etc. It was in college that he first started dabbling in the use of amphetamines to help him get his work done. It would eventually evolve into a lifelong dependency.
Near the end of his schooling, Tobias took up an apprenticeship. For two years he shadowed a renowned psychologist who made a living diagnosing and treating the criminally insane. Tobias spent countless hours in the Saxon Asylum for the Criminally insane, housing many dangerous criminals who were too unstable to be reformed into slaves, and too dangerous to themselves and others to keep in the prison system. Although the face presented that the institution aimed for reformation, the truth behind the walls was that it was little more than the carpet under which the loose ends and stray bits of the city were swept. He did his best to respect the privacy of those around him when it came to his telepathy, but more often than not he couldn't help but hear the thoughts of those around him, particularly those he called 'loud thinkers.' His mentor. Dr.Edimure, was one such man. A portly shapeshifter with a kind, smiling face and soft, patient voice, who was constantly running the numbers in his head about how much 'rent' he was charging various private individuals and groups to keep certain patients locked up when, in reality, they were perfectly sane. Or had been, at least. Dr.Edimure frequently took exorbitant sums of money to misdiagnose certain 'loose ends' who certain shadowy, powerful people wanted kept quiet or, more commonly, discredited. When someone simply 'disappearing' was too blatant, the best step was simply to have them labeled as a madman. And after a year under Dr.Edimure's supervision, they really would be. Initially, Tobias had been shocked and appalled. He'd even, briefly, considered trying to report the man. But, as was the common dilemma with psychic investigators, there was no proof he had on hand other than his word. And he knew better than most how easily he could end up on Dr.Edmiure's business end. 'The stress was simply too much.' he would say. 'Oh, I blame myself. I should have seen the symptoms, but I was too close at hand to let myself be aware of it. Terrible, really. Psychics are so prone to these kinds of breakdowns when exposed to this sort of stimuli.' So Toby kept quiet. And really, as he curiously peered into the skulls of the inmates, despite all the warnings not to, he thought that maybe this was for the best. Even the most innocent of them had tangles and snags here and there, dark intentions behind dark actions, plans halted which may yet have ruined others. Most people were that way, he would find. Certainly, locking them up was easy to label as 'immoral,' but leaving them free would often cause even more destruction, in some form or other. By the end of his apprenticeship, he and Dr.Edimure had a very good understanding of one another, and a firm working relationship. The more he delved into human nature, the more Tobias would come to agree with his mentor.
During the final year of his college education, Toby had slowly started to open up, going out a little more frequently and meeting new people. He enjoyed getting outside stimulus, talking and being personable. It helped him calm down and think objectively. This is how he met Savannah. On the outside, Savannah was a perfectly normal college student. Studying Political science, personable, outgoing, friendly. But her head was a constant tangle of thoughts, fears, and a near-constant string of paranoid thoughts. She fascinated Tobias. She wasn't put off by him, either. In fact, the two of them got along swimmingly. Rather foolishly, Tobias asked her out, and rather unfortunately, she accepted. Things went well enough for a time. It was the first serious relationship Tobias had gotten into. Unfortunately, without really realizing it, he was treating the relationship as more of a case study than a romantic pursuit. He was with Savannah because he wanted to unravel and understand her, not necessarily out of any fondness. Soon enough, he would learn that a prying psychic wasn't exactly a great fit for someone with severe paranoia. Things escalated very suddenly one evening when Savannah accused him of 'screwing with her brain.' Tobias insisted that he'd done no such thing (although, admittedly, he had pried rather more deeply than was perhaps wise) but she wouldn't hear it. She became more and more frantic until she finally attacked him. Tobias, of course, had always been very weak due to his condition, and she easily overpowered him. There was quite a bit of screaming, a knife, and quite a bit more blood. The night ended with her sobbing on the floor after Tobias locked himself in the bathroom to call the police. Despite his parents urging otherwise, he didn't press criminal charges against her. But after undergoing a psychological evaluation, her family eventually opted to have her institutionalized at a private clinic. The knife she'd taken to his cheek had carved an awful chasm into his face, effectively opening up his mouth all the way to the backs of his molars. Fortunately the emergency responders handled it flawlessly. There was a caim who offered, willingly, to seam it up magically, but Tobias declined; he'd never felt right about using caims. So the wound was left to heal the old fashioned way. He had difficulty eating and drinking for the next year, and doubled down on his reclusive habits during that time, seldom ever leaving his apartment except when it was absolutely necessary for classes.
He finally loosened up after earning his doctorate in criminal psychology. Once he established himself with a comfortable job (Dr.Edmiure was kind enough to personally recommend him to the Saxon Public Prison System as a psychological evaluator), he finally started opening up and going out again. Although by the time he graduated college, his muscular condition had advanced to the point that he required elbow crutches, he was more social than he had been since elementary school. His profession had him rubbing elbows with many of the wealthy and elite of the city. Much like his mentor, this put him in a position to garner many a 'favor' with various families and organizations. Certain strings they wanted to be lax, certain strings to be retied in another direction, certain strings to be severed completely. This worked out well enough for him, and soon enough he really was following in his mentors footsteps. Thanks to Dr.Edimures recommendation, he'd been able to score a very comfortable job as a Criminal Psychologist within the System, evaluating prisoners and deeming their conditions as necessary, whether they were capable (and willing) of turning themselves around to become law-abiding citizens, or if they would be best served by reformation within the Division to benefit society as slaves instead. Or even, in some cases, if they could only be safely contained in, say, the Saxon City Asylum. This power of his netted him many good 'friends' who were plenty eager to keep him happy and close by. So he schmoozed at their high-society parties, nodded along and exchanged quirky stories over cocktails, learned the names, the who's who, kept up with the latest gossip, who donated more to which underprivileged charity and who skimped out this time. But Tobias wasn't one to be won with courtesy visits. He was motivated by cash. And it became known soon enough that the numbers were what mattered at the end of the day. In this way he was able to afford the amphetamines that kept him going, as well as a rather lavish lifestyle that he had never even thought of while growing up.
█ ABILITIES
▬ FEAR SPECIALIST
Toby's primary area of study was in the psychology of Fear. As such, he has developed a particular skill for pinpointing a persons worst anxieties, fears, and paranoias. He is capable of utilizing these images and feelings against them, or of helping to suppress or unravel them, depending on what he wants to accomplish with you.
▬ MIND READER
Toby has always been incredibly sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of others. While his telepathic range isn't huge, it is incredibly deep. He actually has an enchanted ring that he wears to help dampen the constant din of the voices around him. When he isn't wearing it, he can very clearly hear the thoughts of anyone nearby with near-perfect clarity. He sometimes struggles to discern what they are thinking from what they've said out loud. It has caused more than a few social faux pas in the past. He can delve rather deeply into a persons mind if he so chooses. He has taken a fair amount of money to 'alter' bits and pieces of a persons mind, but it takes him several sessions to make any large-scale changes.
▬ TELEKINESIS
Toby was born naturally gifted with telekinesis, but never practiced much growing up. As an adult he has become more reliant on it, but can only move small simple objects, or to steady himself when he loses his balance on his crutches. These days he uses it rather frequently, and is slowly becoming more and more practiced with it. Mostly he uses it to grab things like his tea or books without all the hassle of getting up. In an emergency he can hold larger, moving objects or people still, but only for a few moments at a time, and it is extremely strenuous to the point of being hazardous to his health.
▬ CRIMINAL MINDS
Psychic abilities aside, Toby has dedicated most of his life to understanding the human psyche. He is a professional when it comes to predicting patterns in people, anticipating motivations and likely actions to be taken to a very accurate degree. He might not act charming or well-versed in social etiquette, but Toby is, in fact, a master people watcher.
