Despite Fiona's protests, and genuine, valid concerns, Midgard still snuck out of the house and found some way into the heart of the city so that he could power up. She didn't understand, and he didn't expect her to understand, why he felt that he needed to go out alone. And she couldn't possibly understand the itch that rested beneath his skin whenever he was Tristan.

There was a feeling of displacement he couldn't explain whenever he looked at her, or any of the others that frequented the woman's home.

She'd even gotten him a nice camera when she found him messing with the settings of the phone camera of the cell she'd gotten him. Fiona was practically a saint, as far as he was concerned and yet, the only way he could repay her kindness was to go out on a patrol alone.

It felt normal, like this was the type of skin that he was meant to wear and he couldn't decide if it was a result of the fact that he couldn't remember anything about the man, person, that he was when he wore black instead of tan or that he could still feel the weight of sins that the old him had committed.

So, he went out, grateful for the coat that protected him from the worst of the bitter night air, and tried to figure out if there ever be a way for him to properly atone for his sins.

Tourmaline had spent too much time alone. Her thoughts had gone dark and with no one to save her from herself she was left with chaos. The weather had been too cold for racing and she'd had no outlets save for petty fights and skirmishes and even they were getting to the point where they were no longer doing enough to fend off that dark edge.

This night found her balancing precariously on the ledge of a rooftop. Gloved hands were resting on the concrete, legs dangling over the edge as she leaned forward. If she jumped she was certain she could land on her feet, or teleport somewhere else right before she hit the ground if she couldn't. General Labyrinthite had told her before that wasn't wise-- He wasn't around to stop her; couldn't put her through the paces for disobeying orders if he wasn't around, could he?

There were people walking the street beneath her, not many due to the hour, but enough that it wouldn't take much for one of them to notice her. Could she drain all of them? Were there any special starseeds amongst them? Any senshi? Any knights?

"Never a good fight anywhere when you want one," she muttered to herself, shifting just a bit closer to the edge.

He had chosen to walk along the streets, made a poor attempt to blend into the crowd despite knowing that he stuck out like a sore thumb. He looked like some Mideveal cosplayer, some sort of monk and he wasn't foolish enough to think that he could high the energy signature that being Midgard put out.

It was like a bright beacon that didn't beckon people home, but instead would draw the worst kind of attention.

Yet, the squire couldn't deny that a part of him wanted it, that trouble that came with running powered. The powered life was the only thing that he remembered and therefore was the only thing that he could focus up.

Ah, there it was, the dark swirling oppressive signature that he used to associate with himself. His head tipped back and he spotted them, something about the colors and faint details of their clothing he couldn't quite make out sending alarm bells of familiarity.

He found the building's ladder and climbed without thinking.

When he reached the top and realized who it was, he forgot how to breath, pain twisting like a knife in his heart. "Kit?" Why did he call her that? That wasn't - was it? He didn't know, but the nickname reminded him of something warm and fierce and fond.

Then it was replaced with dread when he said, more solidly. "Tourmaline?"

Kit?

The sound of his voice was enough to break through the shadows, drawing her to a place that was warm and safe. It brought back time spent on rooftops under much better circumstances. It made her think that she was hearing things...

Tourmaline?

When the second came more firmly she sat up, her entire body tensing as her fingers tightened their hold on the ledge, claws scraping against the concrete. If he'd come to apologize she didn't want to hear it. The only thing she wanted to hear him say was the location of their General so that they could bring him home...

Tourmaline took a slow breath and her demeanor shifted, shoulders relaxing as she shifted to push herself up to her feet, moving with the languid grace of a cat. "I've been waiting for you to come to your senses. I didn't think you would. I..." Her words were cut short by a strangled sound as she finally caught sight of the man who'd said her name. Like him, but not him. Like him, but not him...

"Who are you?" She snapped, irritated at the tricks her mind was playing on her. Had she really been thinking about Aluminite so much lately that she'd convinced herself that she'd heard him?

Tourmaline responded to his voice and something twisted around his heart, he couldn't place the feeling. Lovesickness perhaps? Or maybe it was shame, especially with the things she was saying, how she was acting. He didn't -

No, he was no longer the person she knew and he didn't know how to deal with that. Not when she was looking at him like she expected him to still be wearing that green and black, when she was looking at him with anger and frustrating and -

For the love of Chronos, all he wanted to do was to gather her in his arms and apologize, but he didn't have that right. Not anymore, not after what he'd done.

"I - " His voice caught in his throat and his mouth snapped shut. He didn't know what to say. "You know me," he said finally, licking his lips and fighting the instinct to step closer. "Or you did, I guess." That wasn't helpful, at all. "I used to - " He stopped, gaze dropping before he said, quietly, "wonder boy."

Her throat tightened as her fingers clenched, unable to tear her eyes away from him. It felt like the necklace she wore, the one he had always worn, was choking her. She couldn't find breath and without breath there were no words.

Whoever this was that stood before her wasn't him. It wasn't Aluminite. It wasn't Wonderboy. It was khaki and green and gold so bright that it gleamed and the overwhelming feeling of light was enough to make her take a shaking, awkward step back towards the ledge.

"No." She found that word first, spitting it out harshly before saying it again. "No. He wouldn't-- You're lying!" She snapped violently, lashing out at him verbally and giving him a chance to back away, or take it back, before she attacked physically.

If he knew what she was thinking, then he would have agreed. He wasn't Aluminite, soft but loving loyal solider who did what he was told because he had to, even if he didn't believe in anything that made up the foundation of the organization he served. No longer was he the talk, awkward man who fell a little too easily for feisty girls who could give him a run for his money with just a look.

No, instead, he was what remained of the man Captain Aluminite had once been, a survivor who rose from the ashes of the person he used to be, who'd been given a second chance when he'd destroyed one of the few things he knew he'd protect with his life.

Midgard wanted to say, you're right, he wouldn't. I'm a no good liar, but he wasn't. He had known, and it'd been the only thing he had been certain of after the deed was done, that he was always coming around to this. He'd never meant to be anything other than Midgard, sworn to Chronos and the Zodiacs. Space would have told him that, if he'd remembered sooner. (Now he didn't remember at all, just like his sister had wanted.)

He stayed in place, sorrow written on his face as he looked at her, knowing what was likely to come next. "'Fraid not," he replied softly, giving her a weak self-deprecating smile. "It's me Kit. Or it's the new me? I don't know how it works. It's all a little fuzzy," he shook his head, arms limp at his side because he didn't know what to do with them.

"You and I both know, I wasn't made for the Negaverse."

"Don't call me that!" Again she snapped at him, this time lashing out with a swipe of her clawed hand. It was a half-hearted; a warning strike, maybe? Too angry to hit him, too hurt to see clearly enough to take a proper swing?

No. Definitely a warning strike as the look she settled on him said clearly that if he came any closer to her right now she would kill him or die herself trying.

"Is this why you wouldn't tell me where to find him? Because you were leaving too? Because it didn't matter?" She spat her words into the space between them, teeth bared in a vicious grin. Every moment they had spent together was trying to rush to the front of her mind as this thing in front of her moved and spoke like a once trusted friend. This abomination had Aluminite's voice and his sad, stupid smile. "You betrayed me?"

Not him. She'd always known on some level that he would sell Labyrinthite out in a heartbeat, but she hadn't expected him to turn on her... And maybe he hadn't. This wasn't Aluminite. This wasn't...

"Who the ******** did this to you?" She would bury them all.

Midgard's mouth clamped shut and instinctively, half of his weapon shield manifest in his hand, the nails of her claws scraping across the wood. This time, he stepped back trying to give her space so they could talked.

"No!" He exclaimed, flashes of that terrible night playing in his head. Even now his hand trembled at the thought that his first kill, the first one done by his own hand, had been Laralee Bradford, a woman who had only ever treated him with kindness. "********, no Tourmaline. I didn't - this wasn't planned." He had spent a month deliberating what his lost memories had meant and what being part of the negaverse meant but he hadn't planned on leaving.

It had just happened.

"I just didn't want you to do something stupid okay! You can't look for him. You can't find him because they don't want you to!" His hands flew out to his sides, one gripping the handle to his shield tonfa tightly. "I never wanted to leave you- believe me please Kit. I - " he stopped because it wasn't fair. He couldn't say that to her so he swallowed it back down.

"It's not about picking sides, it was about me! And maybe it's the only time I've ever really let myself be selfish!"
PostPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2017 6:32 pm

Her eyes gleamed as she glared at him, hands at her sides and ready to strike again if he so much as moved in a threatening way. She was listening to his words but she wasn't hearing him-- Either because she couldn't or because she didn't want to.

"When you address me it is Tourmaline or Captain. If you ever call me anything but one of those two things again I will gut you where you stand." Her voice was low and menacing, taking on an edge it had never had before. "You were the only thing that kept me from looking for him. You were the reason why I didn't push harder and I hated you for it. If I hadn't cared about you so much I could've pressed harder and you would have told me... What's stopping me from doing that now, Aluminute? No, I can't call you that. That's not who you are-- Maybe it never was who you were. Captain Aluminite cared about me. He never would have betrayed me. What did you do to him?"

Tourmaline was screaming by the time the last words came out, voice strained and frantic. If there was anyone still on the streets below they likely heard her. If there was anyone within blocks of where they were having this friendly discussion they likely heard her... Hot, angry tears were streaming down her face but she ignored them, glaring at him steadily through the bitter sting.

Looking at her hurt, seeing her face contort in a series of emotions that tugged at his heart ******** hurt. Between his guilt about Lara, the sting of pain he had felt when Chase had looked at him hatefully and the hurt she displayed -

Midgard was a whirlwind of angst.

There was a bitter coldness in is voice when he finally spoke. "Yeah and I thought you told me to leave you alone." Tournaline had broken up with him and that had left him reeling with a pain he hadn't felt since Leora disappeared without a trace or warning. "I didn't do anything to him! He was broken long before you ever met him, before you broke him worse and did you even think about what he - what I felt? I tried to talk to you about everything and you shot me down!"

His hands curled into fists and his entire frame shook.

"It me Tourmaline, I was Aluminite and - ******** I hate that looking at you hurts, that all I want to do is hold you but I know - I know -" he sounded like he was going to choke on his words. "i don't care what he's made you think, but he doesn't care about us like you think he does. The only person he ever loved is dead and - " he shook his head unable or unwilling to say any more.

"I broke him? I broke you?" Her laughter started out low, growing louder until it was a harsh bark of a sound that hurt her chest. "You were broken before. I thought I was helping you. I thought we were helping each other. You didn't want to be helped. ********... I should report you. I should take you down and take you in and let them reprogram you again."

She was talking a big game but right now she couldn't move. Right now it hurt to breathe. It hurt to be.

"I told you to leave me alone, not change who you were. Outside of this," she made a gesture to the man standing before her, "you don't exist, do you? If I went to your old apartment I wouldn't find you there. This... This stupid necklace and some stupid memories are all I have left."

He couldn't help his temper, it was flaring in a way that was unusual for the man who kept everything so tightly lidded so nothing could escape. "You think I don't know that?" It came out in half a shout that shifted into a hiss between teeth as he tried to reign himself in. It wasn't working. "You were K - " he stopped, swallowed hard and clenched his fist so tightly he thought he might have broken skin if he hadn't been wearing gloves.

"We were." He still believed that they could help each other, he wasn't ready to give up on her despite how angry she was at him. "I don't think that's right. I think you didn't want me to help you because you don't think you deserve anything better." The words were harsh and bitter and maybe Aluminite would have never said them to Tourmaline, but he wasn't Aluminite.

He was Midgard, Squire of Chronos and despite all the blanks, the missing pieces and the lost identity or the aches that came with it, he knew in his very core that this was who he was and who he was meant to be.

"You...you could still have me," he said quietly, softer than he'd spoken before. "But not like that. Not as...that. They took so much from me Tourmaline and they're just going to keep taking. They took him, they took my memories and twisted them and they....they took her."

Even now he couldn't say it aloud.

"They're gonna ruin you too. I can - please. Let me help you."

"Oh, I know that I deserve better. I deserve so much better than someone who would try to hold me back. I deserve better than someone who would lie to me," she growled through gritted teeth, looking like she might snap and lunge at him if he so much as stepped wrong or took anything resembling a move towards her.

"I can't have you. You don't--- <********>, you don't even know who I am! If you honestly think I would just give this up..." Her arms spread out on either side of her to make a broad, grand gesture at the night. She turned a slow circle, coat dusting the rooftop beneath her as she did so before fixing a cold gaze back on him.

"This is who I am. The night, the shadows, the thrill and the pack. They aren't going to ruin me, they're going to run with me and they're going to help me hunt you down. Do you know why?" Captain Tourmaline dropped her arms back down to her sides, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate steps. Her spring green eyes were still glimmering with tears that she refused to let fall, heart pounding rapidly in her chest as she paused inches from him. Her hand trembled as she brought it up, brushing fingers lightly along the line of his jaw. She leaned in closer, closing her eyes as she brushed her lips lightly to his. For a moment everything made sense again-- The moment was fleeting. Everything was wrong.

"Because you're dead," she murmured softly against his mouth, fingers drifting away from his jaw and lightly along his chest. She grabbed the front of his coat, holding on to him out of desperation, drawing him closer as if it might somehow change things. It would be like a fairytale. They'd kiss and everything would go back to normal. Labyrinthite would be back and she wouldn't have been responsible for chasing Aluminite away.

"I didn't lie to you." It was hissed between teeth with Midgard struggling to clamp down on his anger. The fact that he accused him of lying to her when he hadn't - refusing to say something was not the same. Otherwise, he stayed quiet, emerald green eyes watching her warily but also with a bit of desperation. He wanted so badly to gather her up in his arms and make her remember what she liked about him and even though she was angry with him, even though she was yelling at him -

Everything about it was something that reminded him of why he loved her.

Love probably was too strong an emotion for their short time together, but he felt it all the same.

"I do know you." He knew that Tourmaline was passionate, fierce, and strong-willed, but he also knew that she feared being left alone and he hadn't meant to - no he hadn't meant to abandon her.

"Tourmaline, you don't understand what it does to you!" He shook his head, struggling to keep his arms at his side. He jerked back when she crowded his space, heart rate skyrocketing in anticipation, mixed with a twinge of fear, because what if she - no, she wouldn't. Not yet anyway...

At least he was willing to believe such and he felt his heart stutter to a halt, struggle to start again when her lips brushed his and her hand gripped at his coat. Unable to help himself his hands lifted, one running along her hair to grip her by the back of the of the neck and the other to grip her jaw as he bent his head and kissed her. It wasn't the soft, kiss she'd given him but something in which he hoped that he could show her that he was still alive, he still existed and he still wanted her.
