Leaning against one of the winter-bare trees in the park, Bestla tossed her phone from one hand to the other as she thought. She wasn't really feeling it as far as a normal patrol went. And training by herself was growing boring. She needed to test herself against a real person. And who better for that than New Friend? Besides, she'd been curious about Kari's magic since day one and this gave her an opportunity to be nosy as hell.

Reaching a decision, she held her phone up and tapped out an invitation to play.

Hey chick! Wanna meet in the park and cause some trouble? We can talk cosplay while we bout! :'D

Kari stared at the message after receiving it and didn’t quite know what to do for a few minutes. Finally, she began to make her way towards the park, all the while, shooting back a text to Bestla. All right. I’m on my way, but…I’m not quite sure what you mean by cause some trouble…we’re not going to do anything…bad, right?

She had had more than her fair share of…bad things recently, and honestly the wording was worrying her. Had something happened to the nice girl she had talked with? Had…had she gotten mixed up in something dark? Was this where this message was going?

The senshi hesitated and sent another text, standing on the edge of a building on the outskirts of the park. Is…everything okay? Are you okay?

For a few moments, Bestla stared down at the reply before finally chuckling softly and tapping out her own response. It was so cute of Kari to worry.

I am A+ okay! And no, nothing bad. I'm just tired of training by myself and wanted some company. Figured we could both use some fighting practice against stuff that isn't totally inanimate.

Even as she hit send, Bestla had to wonder at what had caused the concern. Okay, she could sort of see where asking if Kari wanted trouble could be alarming. So, note to self, she'd have to be a little more careful about what she phrased herself until Kari was used to her. Easy enough.

See ya when you get here!

Ohh…fighting practice. Well, she had gotten a lot of that recently, but maybe it would be different against someone who wasn’t really there to hurt her. She hopped off of the building and made her way to the other senshi. “Hey. I’m here. Sorry about that, I uh. I keep seeming to run into people who aren’t just interested in practicing…and it’s just been an interesting few weeks, I think. I don’t know.”

Kari flashed a smile. “It’s really good to see you though. Really good. I’ve missed seeing friendly faces, honestly.”

“Have you been well? What have you been up to? Did you have a nice Christmas?” What did you even talk to a friend about?

“So uh…you’ve thought of some good cosplay ideas for me, have you? Also, how do you want to do this fight? I’m ready when you are.”

Grinning a welcome, Bestla waved, unable to keep the helpless laughter that burbled out of her at bay. Finally, she held up her hands n surrender and shook her head, smiling.

"Whoa there, honey! It's no worries, honest. And if you've been having trouble with assholes, it's understandable. Friendly faces become valuable."

Reaching out, she gave Kari's shoulder a friendly pat.

"It's great to see you too, my Christmas was hella boring and oh, honey," now she had to laugh even more. "If you could only see my idea sketchbooks."

Now, her eyes lit up as she assumed a ready to rock position. Clearly, Kari was a girl after her own heart when it came to getting down to things.

"Come at me, bro," she grinned, winking at the other girl as she raised her hands to block any potential hits.

Kari grinned. “Well, maybe next time you can bring your sketchbook for me to see, okay?” She wasn’t really keen on admitting it, but she was kind of really excited to see what Bestla was going to come up with. The idea of cosplaying was still a strange one, but it really did sound fun, honestly.

“Well, all right then. Since you asked for it…but you didn’t say please so…I’m not sure if I really should.”

She did though, she ran at the other senshi, her fists outstretched, much like a really fast zombie. This was not the way to fight…but she just…didn’t think that magic was something that was acceptable here, plus she didn’t want to hurt the senshi, not like she had hurt the other people with her attack.

“Just try to stop me! I’m gonna get you!” Wow. She was so fierce. So frightening. So mighty.

So adorable. Bestla held her stance, smiling a little as Kari came at her. Though, if this odd, stiff-armed way was how she fought, it was Bestla's job to correct it before anything bad happened.

Waiting a breath until Kari was nearly on her, Bestla reached out with one arm to grab one of Kari's arms and with the other, swooped in to seize her hip, intending to use her own momentum to sweep the smaller girl up into a modified body press.

"Looks like I got you instead, sweetie. Truth time, is that normally how you fight? Because if we're gonna practice and train, we gotta take it seriously. You can take a proper swing at me, y'know? Just don't put your full force behind it if you're scared of hurting me."

Smiling, she wondered if Kari knew any blocks. Maybe they could work on defense moves instead?

“I’m not really good at fighting. I don’t really like it, honestly…I’ve been trying to be more…fight friendly, but when I use my attack, it hurts people, but if I don’t, I know I’m going to end up getting killed or something and it’s awful and…”

Kari shrugged helplessly, unhappy with how easily she had been stopped. Not that she even knew what she was doing.

“It’s one thing to try and fight back when someone’s really going after me…but I don’t really know how to spar either, truth be told…and you’re my friend, so it just seems…mean to try to hurt you just so I can get better at hurting others…I don’t want to hurt anyone, honestly.”

Her eyes moved to the ground. “Maybe I’m really just not cut out for this. I’ve never felt really comfortable being a senshi anyway…do you think I should just…quit?”

Wow things had gone the exact opposite way then they were supposed to have, and Kari wasn’t quite sure how to get her mind out of this thought pattern.

Standing quietly, Bestla just listened, doing her best to not interrupt or judge. Okay, so Kari didn't like fighting, fair enough. Not many folks did. Still, there were concerns here that needed to be addressed.

"Bear with me here, hon," she began in a gentle voice. No point in upsetting her friend any further. "I thought you said your magic makes people leave you alone. How does that hurt them? And since we are going to work on helping you defend yourself, we can hopefully keep the 'or worse' from ever happening."

Moving slowly and carefully, Bestla circled Kari and reached out to gently move one arm here, the other there and to softly nudge her feet into new positions. Still listening, she nodded where it seemed appropriate and even smiled once or twice.

"Much as I appreciate you not wanting to hurt me just to get good, a bruise here and there is kind of inevitable. And really, I don't think any decent, sane person ever wants to hurt anyone. And as for not being cut out to be a senshi and quitting... Well, I couldn't stop you if that's what you really and truly want. I'd be sad and a bit disappointed, but I wouldn't stop ya. Hey, can you turn your torso like this?" she asked abruptly, gently shoving Kari's hip with her fingertips.

One way or another, Kari had to be trained to defend herself. And if she didn't like using her magic, well...? There was always trying to teach her how to improvise.

"Look at it from another angle, friend. For whatever reason, you were picked by some weird space cat to be a warrior to help protect people right? You had magic to help you do that unlocked and you can run faster, jump higher and hit harder than the average person. There may be a lot of senshi running around, but the average, every day folks still outnumber us a lot. That's a lot of moms and dads and kids and people who just are not mentally or physically capable of defending themselves from the bad."

She paused in front of Kari and pushed her elbows up slightly. Hooray for classic defense poses!

"So, if you quit, that's one less safeguard all those defenseless folks have. They may not know you exist, they may not thank you for existing, but they need you. They need us. And not using the power and abilities you've been given to help is just as bad as using them to help the bad guys win. Now," she continued in a crisp voice, "Notice how I've got you positioned? Unless you let them, no one can unbalance you when you stand that way. And your arms are positioned to be able to quickly defend your face and gut. That being said, I'll come at you, but slow, so you can see how everything works, yeah?"

Suddenly, the taller girl grinned and winked.

"Neither of us is gonna give up and let innocent folk turn into losses, aight?"

Kari listened to what Bestla was saying, and let the other senshi move her like some life sized doll…but after a moment, she felt her eyes burn, and the last bit of whatever the other girl was saying went in one ear and out the other. Unbalanced? Had she said that Kari was unbalanced? Maybe, but…that really didn’t matter.

With a loud, obnoxious sob, Kari threw her perfectly positioned arms around the other senshi and hugged her.

This might have been the first good advice that anyone had really ever said. A reason to keep fighting, even if she was less than useless. But, speaking of that, she couldn’t even spar right. Ugh. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Okay, yeah whatever…I’ll do whatever I just haven’t been doing so well in all of this and thank you…okay.”

She drew away from the other senshi slightly and struggled to wipe at her eyes.

Starting slightly as Kari suddenly hugged her and began sobbing, Bestla stood silent for a moment, completely stunned. Then, she carefully reached up and began to pet Kari's head and make soothing, cooing sounds. She wasn't sure what she'd said or done to prompt this reaction, but she wanted to make things better.

"Everyone's allowed to have a rough day or a string of 'em, sweetie. You don't have to apologize for feeling down and confused."

Bestla's eyes twinkled slightly as she smiled down at Kari, "Just because we're crazy space alien super heroes doesn't mean we can't get tired of this whole mess."

Grabbing her sash, she dabbed at Kari's face for a moment.

"Now, ready to get back up on the metaphorical horse and try again?"

Kari gave another sniffle and a trembling smile, before getting her arms up in a pretty good approximation of where Bestla had had them before her storm of feelings. “Yeah…I’m ready.”

And…maybe, deep down she really was. She was ready to stop being blindsided…ready to take a stand or something. Her friend was right, she really was the only line of defense that people had sometimes…so she had to take it seriously…and those that yelled at her for being brutish and awful…well, those were the ones who really needed stopping…the ones that got into people’s heads, made them doubt…

That was dangerous.

But it was more dangerous to just lie down and let them run rampant.

Her hands balled into fists and she drew in a breath, throwing what she considered to be a real punch, aiming for Bestla’s torso though, not her face.
Her face was far too pretty to hit. “Let’s do this thing!”

"Good girl!" Bestla smiled approval and reached out to ruffle Kari's hair. Taking a step back, she watched as the other girl positioned herself and smiled inwardly. Her friend's balance was a little wonky, but it was so close to how Bestla had positioned her that she wasn't going to complain.

Even better was the punch Kari threw. Though she had twisted slightly to have the blow avoid her kidneys. Grunting a little at the impact, she grinned and dropped, sweeping one leg out to knock Kari on her butt.

"Good! Keep it comin', girl!"

The kick worked wonders, and while Kari tried to keep her balance and not fall over, such things were difficult, and down she went, legs and arms flailing in a very comical way. “Argh!”

She hit the ground with a thump and winced. “Ah, keep it coming?”

The senshi looked up at her friend and gave a wry smile. “I don’t know, Bestla…maybe we could just be done for today? I…I’m tired. This…I appreciate all you’ve been doing for me…but I just feel utterly drained right now…but you’ve made me feel a lot better about…about everything. I want to hang out with you…outside of this. When can we start cosplaying?”

Kari felt her eyes beginning to burn again, and she wanted to get out of here before she started crying again, but she honestly wanted to express her gratitude to her friend. “Maybe…maybe we can go get lunch on Saturday? I would like to meet up with you in normal circumstances…”

Taking pity on her friend, Bestla smiled and extended a hand to help the other girl to her feet.

"Sure thing, sweetie. We can call it a night. And we can start cosplaying after I get some measurements and whomp up a few things for us."

Pulling the smaller girl into a hug, Bestla nodded in agreement to meeting for lunch as just Daisy and Gale.

"I'm not much good at being normal, but lunch sounds grand. How do you feel about tacos or sushi and bubble tea? I'm free all day, so just text me the wheres and whens!"
