 It was very safe to say that Damselfly was poor at sports. In PE in school she was the one to airily sit on the outsides and stare at the clouds or any particularly interesting passing insects. Just too many phonies, too much going on, and the fact that very few people had the patience to try to teach her anything when she had a very undesirable crybaby tendency.
It is literally a whole 'nother ball game when just playing one-on-one, after all.
Well, Damselfly still isn't good at it, but it's not like Sandlot Bambino had any other choice of playmates, no one else was still playing in playground's field this late in the day. There were a few still on the swingsets, and a pair of watchful parents, and that was it. But at the least, Damselfly was being watchful, and had smartly decided to wear all the catcher's gear to prevent from accidentally being hit and setting off the waterworks.
She looked stupid, so it was a fantastic thing that Damselfly had no understanding for when she looked stupid.
"I can do it!" She crooned cheerfully, for about the dozenth time, having not 'done it' the past eleven times at all. However, she was getting slightly closer to hitting the ball with the bat each time.

Sandlot Bambino laughed at Damselfly's attempt. She wasn't very good at this but at least she was determined. He had been trying relentlessly to show her how to swing correctly but his teachings had yet to really sink in. But little by little she was getting better.
The colt was frustrated earlier when he realized she had zero natural skill but after a few more swings it didn't bother him anymore. Damselfly wanted to learn so in the end he was happy to teach. Bambino loved baseball and it only benefited him if others loved it too. Who knows, maybe Damselfly could get really good at this?
He wasn't really sure if it was the best idea to wear all that catchers gear but whatever floats her boat. "You gotta bend your legs more and really grip the bat. When I say three you swing it, okay?"
Bambino flew over to the pitchers mound and got into position. He ran through the routine his father had taught him but instead of an overhand throw, he did a nice and easy underhand toss.
"One, two, THREE! Swing, girl! Swing!!" He yelled as the ball flew through the air towards Damselfly. If she hit this he'd be psyched! If not...well...guess they'd keep trying and trying until who knows when.

'Determined' was a very kind way of putting it. Damselfly was plain bad, and really only trying because Sandlot Bambino seemed like fun and she wanted him to be happy, but she was just fine giggling over missing the ball as trying to actually hit the dang thing.
Which made it quite a surprise when she did manage to hit it- eyes squeezed shut and squeaking as she wildly flailed the bat.
For a moment she hadn't even realized what had happened, the solid clunk of the ball hitting bat reverberating all the way down it into her arms. Her eyes snapped wide out of confusion, watching the ball soar away- and away- and into the treeline.
"I... I hit it?" She stared dumbfounded at the bat, then her hooves, and then helplessly over at Bambino, entirely confused with everything that was going on.

Bambino couldn't believe it either. He stood on the mound in shock, jaw hanging, and eyes wide as saucers. "You did it...You actually did it!!!" Bambino jumped about, leaped into the air, and quickly flew over to Damselfly. He pulled her into a big spin-hug as he cheered and cheered.
Honest to goodness he didn't think she'd ever hit that ball. For once he was so happy to be proven wrong. Miracles do come true!
He eased off his celebration but not before demanding a few high and low hooves from Damselfly.
"How does it feel? You're on your way to becoming a big slugger now!!" Where was the ball? He'd let her keep it as memorabilia.
"Wait...where is the ball?" The shock must have distracted him enough that he didn't see where it landed.

The entire process was filled with a softly shrieking Damselfly- at the spin, at panicking to high-hoof in the right spots, at starting to well up in the eyes when Bambino asked her how she felt. To be very fair, she was feeling a lot of things at the moment- mostly exhilaration and confusion. At least they were good streams of tears, the filly smiling through them, only able to nod rapidly that she was good at that question.
Damselfly snuffed and scrubbed at her face, brow drawing at the very last question.
"I had my eyes closed most of it..." Really should not be a surprise, she kept reflexively closing her eyes in fear each time the ball soared near her, "But I think I saw at the very end..." Oh, oh dear... She lifted a hoof, pointing off into the forest, the image of a fleeting white blur in her memory.
The forest was very dark and sometimes weird phonies that she wasn't supposed to talk to were in there, but most importantly there were probably monsters.
"I-I'll go get it." Her voice was a touch faint, forced to be cheerful at the prospect. She'd lost Sandlot Bambino's ball, she had to get it back. Damselfly would be miserable if she lost one of her toys, she didn't want to do that to someone else. Ac.Wings All right! School's back in session, and I can still do this >: )
