After delivering her present to Sylvia, Beth made her way to the Zeus Dorm to track down Brian. It occurred to her that maybe she should have sought him out first, rather than making the journey back toward her own dorm. But her quest was mostly fueled by opportunistic desperation. As she walked into the dorm, she gave it an appreciative once over. It was like the Hera dorm in mirrored, masculine form. There was something to be said about sticking to the classics. But something about being in there made her uneasy. She determinedly stalked the halls, trying to find the room that Brian made his home in.

She had been walking for a few minutes before she remembered that she had his number in her phone. So she pulled out hers and quickly shot him a text.

text
Hey, there! It's Beth! Out of curiosity, are you at your dorm? Also, what room are you in?

No peeking!

Brian's phone had stopped its constant litany of dings and bings of people expressing their concern for him. Whether it as becoming old news or they had just given up he wasn't sure, but that same sort of dread crept into him when the generic text sound went off.

He smiled when he pulled out his phone and saw that it wasn't a number he hadn't seen in months, but Beth. He could handle Beth.

He texted back quickly: Just got back!

He popped his room number at the end of the message and went about making sure his room was tidy. He hadn't just gotten back so much as he had just gotten out of the shower and sat down, but that was a good thing. He couldn't smell all that good after a workout, no matter how much locker rooms had gotten him used to BO and sweat. He wasn't sure why Beth was coming, but now was as good a time as ever to give her his gift. He had been planning to go out again soon anyway. Sylvia had seemed so pleased with hers that he was marginally less worried about the rest of them. He went under his bed and pulled out the present that had "Beth" written on a torn piece of printer paper stuck between the layers. He crumpled and tossed the paper away and set the present on his bed.

Beth's arrival was probably sooner than Brian anticipated, as she had been wandering around the dorm building searching for him. Her arm was just beginning to ache under its burden. Perhaps she should have gotten a bag for all the bags. Or maybe see about borrowing a wagon. She giggled to herself at the mental image of her pulling a Radio Flyer behind her, laden with presents. What a childish Santa Claus she would have made! But in the end, it was mere fancy, like most in her life.

In the end, it was just her, her ill-planned scheme to deliver presents all across the Prytaneum, and the single day she'd given herself to accomplish it.

She finally found Brian's room--according to the text--and knocked lightly on it. As she waited, she idly wondered if she should set the four bags down next to her to give her arm a break. Individually, they weren't heavy--in fact, two were barely larger than a wallet might be. But she had been walking around for a bit, and hadn't moved them along her arm, a wonderful recipe for putting her arm to sleep. At least she'd been working them out, what with choosing a whip and everything.

She had enough dexterity to follow up his response.

Sorry that it's a lot of fluff. OTL

Brian stood up and answered the door a moment after the first knock. He smiled as he opened it, knowing that chances were it was going to be Beth. What he saw was the petite woman surrounded by bags. She must be out gift-giving! Perfect timing.

"Hey! Come on in," he said, taking a step back and holding the door open. "Do you need a hand?" Probably not if she had made it all the way here by herself, but it was most polite to ask.

Beth was just pressing the send button as Brian opened the door. Her features lit up. "Thanks! I think I'm good. Just need to set some stuff down for a few." She lugged everything in with her and did just that, pulling one of the wallet-sized bags from the group and holding it out to him. It was dark blue with golden starbursts and a spray gray tissue emanated from the top. "Merry Christmas!" She chirped, holding it out to him.

"Alright." Poor Beth lugged everything in and set it down, and he gestured to the bed, offering a seat should she want one. It looked like she might be doing her present-giving rounds so he doubted she actually wanted to stay very long.

"Thank you!" he said. He took the small bag and then turned to get Beth's present. His was not so aesthetically pleasing, just some blue snowflake paper that he had taped himself. The gift on top was the precise size and shape of a gift card still in its cardboard, but the box beneath it was a bit more tall and chunky. "Merry Christmas to you too."

With that being given, he took to his bag to open his present.

Beth exchanged bags with Brian's wrapped box, grinning as she more or less flopped into a seat at the foot of the bed, bouncing slightly with the small ripples her movement caused. Her arms were wrapped around the gift so it didn't fall, but she watched him with some interest. She preferred to take turns opening gifts and so gently nudged him with, "You first!"

Brian nodded. "Alright."

He always got nervous when gifts went in turns, not in opening but in watching people open. His gifts could be very lame in comparison and he had no idea when he went first. Not one to disappoint, though, he pulled the tuft of paper out of the bag and dipped his hand inside. It was something... stringy? Maybe even beaded? He pulled his hand out to get a better look.

Is that a bracelet or what? Unless I wasn't supposed to peek still and that has nothing to do with anything! :V

Beth couldn't help wringing her hands. While she prided herself on giving thoughtful gifts, she confessed herself at a loss when faced with her companion Chosen. She wasn't sure he would find the beads of value. That was what the gift card was for. She leaned forward, suddenly wondering if this was the right way to go.

Yup! Inside the bag he finds the bracelet wrapped in tissue with a prayer to Zeus written on a folded piece of paper. There is also a cardboard gift card holder with a Visa card for $500. (It's meant to be an uncomfortable amount of money.)

He pulled the bracelet from the neatly-folded tissue paper and grinned, then laughed as he held it up to the light. He'd never really been a jewelry guy, not even watches, but this was from Beth. It was different. He'd just have to get used to the feel of it, wasn't he? Also the lightning bolt was a charming little addition. It seemed to be a theme amongst his friends this year and he found it touching. Then he pulled the little note from the paper and his grin fell into a happy lopsided sort of expression.

The little box made him worry. It looked like the gift card holders you picked up in the gift wrap aisle. Imagine if they had gotten each other the same amount? It'd just cancel out, but maybe that'd be sort of funny. he opened the box smiling, but the expression quickly dissolved. His brows furrowed and his lips fell open.

Wow. He'd known that Beth was pretty wealthy, but... wow.

"I can't take this," was the first thing he said in regards to his gift, even though it didn't speak for his view of the whole. The bracelet was nice (he was pretty sure that was what it was?) but the card... He held it out to Beth, hoping she would just take it back and laugh or something. Maybe it was a joke? Maybe she'd never had it activated.

Immediately sensing the shift in his posture, the eager smile dropped from Beth's face. Her cheeks became heated. Had she done something wrong? She stared at the card in Brian's outstretched hand and then lifted her eyes to his. Apprehension was written in her gaze. "W-what do you mean? I know it's lame, but I figured it was better to let you get something you wanted. You're actually kinda hard to shop for." She made no move to take the card from him. He had seemed pleased with the prayer beads. What was it about the gift card that shook him so much?

Lame? She thought it was lame? So it wasn't a joke, then. He couldn't see mirth written anywhere on her face. What in the world?

"No, I mean, it's too much," he said, and huffed a bit of nervous laughter, "Five hundred dollars is a lot. I can't take it." He recognized that Beth looked put-out, but what was he supposed to do? He was holding a little piece of plastic worth $500 that could be nothing but spent.

"I...." She curled her fingers around the present in her lap so that it didn't automatically rise at the tacit demand of his outstretched hand.

It was something that had always bewildered her when she faced it. So many of the friends she'd made since college got squirrelly when it came to money. What was it about currency that pained them so much? They refused it, they laughed nervously, they quietly buried any evidence that it was needed. And all Beth wanted was to help them.

She tried to smooth her laugh into something calming, but it jangled sharply down her spine, before she said, "Don't be silly, Brian. It's just a gift card." Several snatches of sentences which could follow that up filtered through her head, none of which adequately conveyed the entirety of her feelings. "I couldn't figure out something else to get you, that's all. I just thought you'd...." And even then, she couldn't find a way to end that sentence. She couldn't help the childish petulance in her voice as she said, "Why don't you want my gift?"

Brian's mouth scrunched up and pushed to one side. His brows furrowed. Somehow Beth didn't seem to understand.

"I'm flattered. Really." How much had the bracelet cost?! "It's just... I mean, I know your family is wealthy, but five-hundred dollars is a lot. It's not... I don't know. It's not appropriate." He looked down at the card in his hands. Who was he to say it was inappropriate, really? But it was. $500 was more than some people made in a month, and he'd bought Beth a bath bomb. He shook his head. "The beads are amazing. Really. I'm touched. But five hundred dollars..."

It was absolutely ridiculous to be having this conversation. Was Beth really so detached from the average folks? He hadn't thought that she was, but now what was he supposed to do? It wasn't even like he could donate it. It was a card.

Beth's mouth was suddenly very dry and she had to swallow against the lump in her throat. Had she angered him? Had she actually offended him? She was quite aware that her upbringing was not that of her comrades. Painfully aware, in some cases. But she had no idea why on earth that would be something to be rejected.

"Not appropriate for what? I just wanted you to be able to get yourself something you wanted. What's wrong with that?" Her mind was running into overdrive, but she was able to stop her customary rambling thoughts from crossing her lips. She didn't want to take the card back. She wished Brian would just quit getting hung up on the number. She wished she'd chosen a better gift. But what was done was done...if Brian would just accept what she'd given him!
