The first snowflakes began falling just a few days before winter break. It hadn’t been heavy enough to cancel school but it did cause several delays. Luck did not seem to be in the student's favor but it mattered little to Amelia. Preschool had started just a few months ago and quite honestly she loved going.
But now that they were out on vacation until the new year the weather seemed to have felt the need to unleash a torrent of huge snowflakes over the span of a few hours. Weathermen and women spoke words of caution about blizzard conditions and had warned everyone to stock up on candles, batteries and stay inside; this winter storm was going to be a doozie.
7:00 AM on the dot Amelia was the first in her house to wake up. She yawned and stretched then emerged from her covers. The house was cold enough to cause the hair on her arms to stand on end but the little girl paid it no mind and instead stood on her bed and peeked outside through the closed blinds.
Pale purple brows rose in amazement as her mouth all but dropped in surprised. A few inches was to be expected, a measurement that her dad had explained was about the how long her hand was, but this looked like it went up to her knees at least. “Pretty…!” She gasped and upon her exhale the window clouded over in a white haze that disappeared seconds later.
True to the nature of any child she only had one single thought on her mind, a mission like no other, and that was to quickly get ready and go outside and play in it. Giggling as she butt bounced off the side of her bed and stumbled towards the doorway Amelia opened her bedroom door and tore off down the hallway, bare feet slapping against the hardwood floor past her brothers door towards her father's’ room.
“Daddy!” Amelia yelled in sheer excitement. “Daddy!” she yelled as she ran into the side of his bed with an oomph and a face full of comforter. “Daddy daddy! Can we go outside? Please? Daaddy!”
James groaned. It was way too early to deal with such an excited kiddo. His hands came up to rub his face and rous himself awake before rolling over to grab his phone off the night stand to see what time it was. “You need to eat something first.”
“Awww but I don’t wanna eat want to go outside now. Please daddy.” Through the foggy haze of sleep that blanketed his mind he looked at his daughter's pleading eyes and found himself lacking the willpower to say no to such an adorable face.
“Okay..” he sighed, resigning himself to getting out of bed “You go get you snow suit on and i’ll meet you downstairs.” Those doe like eyes were going to be the end of him he was sure of it.
Minutes passed while Amelia got ready and soon she was downstairs in her puffy purple snow suit and matching knitted hat sitting at the kitchen table while her father helps put her snow shoes on. “Ok, are you ready?” He asked after taking a sip of coffee.
“YEAH!” she replied
“Okay! Lets - go build a snowman.” James opened the front door wide and without hesitation Amelia was off, knee high in snow, making her way over to the yard where she looked up at billowing white clouds with a smile on her pink tinted cheeks. Today was going to be a good day, full of fun building a family of snowmen and making angels in the yard. She was sure of it, and this time she planned on making one for her mom too.
