As one year closes and another one lingers on the horizon, now is a good time to sit back and think about everything that's happened in the year before. A local newspaper is running a seasonal section asking for your most memorable moment in Destiny City. This year, last year, fifty years ago--what was your more memorable? It doesn't seem like this is very competitive; they seem to be printing random suggestions. Maybe your contribution will get printed! If you feel like writing, at least. You can always sit around and reminisce--or just read some of what others are sharing.

Rayna had been reading the weekend newspaper and was about to toss it aside before noticing an article that had been given its own little section of page and screamed to be read with the large, bolded font type that had been used.

“Tell us about your most memorable year in Destiny City and it could be published in all of next week’s issues.”

Rayna lay the newspaper down on the table with a sigh. It was definitely an intriguing idea and she was curious to find out if she had what it took to get her work published for the article. Removing the page from the paper Rayna grabbed one last piece of toast and consumed it on the way up into her bedroom. She knew as she sat down at her computer desk what she wanted to write about. Booting up the tower to her desktop Rayna patiently waited for everything to load before signing in and opening up a blank word document. She stared at the blank screen and the flashing cursor as it sat there, taunting her, daring her to type what was already yearning to come out. It was then that she paused. Her fingers rested above the keys but she made no move to begin typing. It was almost if she could not bring herself to even type about what had happened to her over the past year. Gritting her teeth the teen placed her fingers in the home row position (learned very recently in her computer class) and began to slowly type the beginning of the story that she would tell instead. Her eyes were closed as she mouthed various words before nodding… that would do very nicely. It would make for an excellent read if she had any say in the matter.

“My most memorable year in Destiny City was the year I discovered hidden treasure for the first time…

Perhaps you are asking yourself right now how that is even possible here in the city and I tell you it isn’t easy. You need the tenacity to go out there and do whatever it takes to accomplish your goal and let’s not forget that you need the proper tools of the trade.

It was about three years ago that I begged my parents for a metal detector. I just thought it was the coolest idea to be able to go out and spend my weekends getting exercise and maybe uncovering little pieces of this city’s history piece by itty-bitty piece. Too bad I didn’t realize just how many pieces were out there.”

Rayna paused and chuckled to herself in remembrance. It had not been smooth sailing at first. Trial and error became her own personal litany as she scoured the various plots of land around town. Turning back to her keyboard a smile was now on her face as she continued to type.

“My first foray into metal detecting was not that great I came home with nothing but a few pieces of rusty metal that were obviously discarded at random. As time passed though I began to realize the finesse one needs when pursuing this particular hobby. You need to know where the best spots are to look and what if all possible happened in the past to make your search area such a good location. Research led me to an open field one day that I had read about. I honestly wasn’t sure if I would find anything but I had to try at least. Rain had begun to fall and I was growing impatient but I was too stubborn to just give up. Perhaps that is why I ended up finding my treasure. I won’t tell you what it was but it now sits on my shelf in my room as a memento. It’s not every day that you find something as important as what I found that day.”

Rayna eyed the story with a grin and turned around to stare at her shelf. Turning back in her seat she checked it over for proper spelling and grammar before saving. She opened her email and composed a new email to the newspaper before attaching her document to the email before pressing the send button. It was a long shot but perhaps her story would be published.
