He'd all but given up on the white lion succeeding in the first of many challenges. Suffice it to say that Gideon had settled himself comfortably in his 'lair' once more, carefully perched on an overhanging ledge. He hadn't heard anything worthy of his attention since then, and even he had grown bored of the repetitive sound of the white male's footsteps as he wandered around in circles. Every now and then, he'd catch sight of a flicker of white from his vantage point, but then it would be gone again...only to return in due course.

At this point it was like clockwork, and it was laughable.

What was it exactly that this one aimed to achieve? What had they aimed to achieve in sending him here? He didn't know the answer to these questions, and he wasn't certain he would get them. The amount of time the white lion had wasted so far seemed to indicate that he simply wasn't capable of opening his mind to other possibilities. Nevertheless he had made a promise to his friends and while he might have wished to send them an angry message back, he refrained from doing so.

Instead he elected to raise a brow as the flicker of white fur failed to show up at the expected time. It seemed that for today, his entertainment was over as the white lion had seemingly disappeared...

He was an idiot - how long had that door been there? The opening in the rock face was something he had only seen as he had slumped against a tree and gave a childish groan of discontent. He had been so close to giving up, he had been round and round in circles and if anyone had been in any doubt, he absolutely knew that he was going in circles... But he'd done so in the hope of finding something he might have missed.

Eventually he had reached a point where everything had looked the same - trees, undergrowth, little landmarks. They all began to look exactly like something else a few paces back and he surmised this was probably due to the fact that he had passed it so many goddamn times. What was it they said? Sometimes it was easier to look away, take a break, and then come back with fresh eyes...?

There was method to this madness apparently.

After all, the moment he had slumped, released his groan and closed his eyes, it had given him a moment to regather his thoughts. The moment he had opened them again it had been there. As if by magic the opening in the rocks was completely visible, so visible in fact that it was a wonder he had missed it at all.

"Tethys," he murmured to himself as he heaved himself back to his paws. "You are an idiot," he announced as he ducked into the cave to inspect it. Perhaps this was where the entity was hiding, it was in the right direction if his previous words had been anything to go by...

The words had bounced from cave wall to cave wall and Gideon had flicked his ears back to listen. He afforded himself a smile as he heard them, at last the puzzling lion had found his way in and he hadn't been above belittling himself either. Whatever had transgressed outside, it appeared the lion had finally seen what was very obviously in front of him - albeit several hours later, but he had managed to do it when Gideon had begun to assume it simply wasn't going to happen.

"You are," Gideon agreed and rose to his feet. Striding towards the edge of his precipice, he gazed down on the lion who had gained entry to his caverns and chuckled. "But there is wisdom in acknowledging a weakness," he pointed out. He soon settled once again, taking a seat and coiling his tail around his paws. He could still inspect the lion below him, so young and filled with youth, but from here...

Mmm, there was something not quite right.

What should have been bright and youthful light had been replaced by a much harder gaze. Gideon hadn't been briefed on what the white lion may have endured before he came here, but he was beginning to suspect that it might have been the cause of his obliviousness. He was too fixated on something else to see what lay in front of him, but his eyes physically seemed to work, at least he had that going for him.

"Now that you have finally found the door, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?"

"Seriously?"

All right so he could have been forgiven for not seeing a black lion, but this guy had bright orange fur. How in the name of all that was holy had he been unable to see that? Even in the jungle he should have stood out, there had been nothing orange anywhere. Tethys was momentarily furious, not at the lion, but at himself. What he was looking at was something that was once again, very obvious. It seemed that everything about this entire encounter had been just that... obvious.

"How did I miss you?" he murmured and shook his head in disbelief

Nevertheless, the black lion had asked a question and rather than ignore it, it was in his best interest to remember his manners. Clearly he had been sent here because this lion possessed the ability to be invisible when he should be perfectly easy to see. His contacts had been smart enough to recognise that he could utilise this ability himself, now it was just a question of persuading him to show him out it was done... right?

"I was sent here," he said finally and cleared his throat. "They said you might be able to help me understand how one fights something they can't see..."

"A very good question," Gideon replied as Tethys finally noticed what he had missed. Gideon hadn't even made himself difficult to see, it had simply been a case of the white lion failing to realise he was even there. Though when Tethys did finally answer his question, the black lion raised an eyebrow. The message he had received had been different than what Tethys had received, perhaps the male had interpreted the intentions of his benefactors differently...

"You must be Tethys," he said and clucked his tongue.

Now he was beginning to see why he had been sent here; while Gideon hadn't been briefed on these 'phantoms', he had been briefed on the very severe vulnerabilities this male had displayed. His benefactors had been concerned, they had noticed that in due time these vulnerabilities would kill him...and more importantly, they had stressed that they hadn't always been there.

He would eventually ask how the male received his scars, but for now, he was going to have to start from the beginning. Suffice it to say that the black lion was under no illusions that this would be a quick process.

"I believe I can help, but in order to do that you're going to have to come up here," he motioned to the cavern and nodded. "The route is fairly straight forward, it shouldn't take you too long," he clarified as he stepped away from the precipice and moved back towards the sunlight that lay at the other side of the ledge...clearly another opening.

Now then, let's see how long it took him to get up here...

Oh, huh, that was easy...

Apparently his contacts had been good on their word, he had expecting some measure of difficulty in convincing the lion and yet there had been none. Instead the lion already knew his name and had simply told him to come up. Tethys surmised that one of the tunnels should therefore lead him up there - after all, Gideon had said it shouldn't take him too long.

Thus, taking a deep breath the lion headed towards the first one and began to follow it round. When it didn't begin to head up, he swung round and made an attempt for a different one. No use wasting time, if it wasn't going up then that meant that it was going the wrong way.

...If only he had taken the time to count all the tunnel entrances.

More to the point, why had he not noticed that there was no sign of an entrance where Gideon was?

Gideon hadn't been wrong when he assumed that this would take a while, at this point in time Tethys really couldn't see the wood for the trees...
