It felt strange to be in the dorms again and he felt saddened by the fact he hadn't actually visited anyone in so long that being in the building felt bizarre. Adjusting the strap to his duffel bad, he went up the steps and down the hall before he stood in front Jordan's door.
In the jungle, he hadn't actually thought he would take him up in the offer, but too much didn't sit right inside of him to allow him to be in the house at the moment. Whether it was anger, final surrender, or something much worse, something was stewing sndbhe didn't trust himself in Lawr's house.
He slowly knocked on Jordan's door, assuring himself for the millionth time that this was all temporary,

"Come in, it's unlocked," Jordan called. He put a small stack of neatly folded blankets and sheets down on the end of the couch. He had spent the time between Melvin's text and his arrival tidying the room; he was neat by habit and nature, but he had been trained early that when someone was going to be visiting for any amount of time, you cleaned immediately beforehand. As a result, his room was newly swept and in order.
He crossed to the kitchenette area and started the process of making a fresh pot of coffee. That was the other part of greeting a guest.

Pushing the door, he stepped inside and looked about, already noticing the blankets on the couch as he closed the door behind him and locked it out of habit before stepping inside. There was one great perk of Jordan's invite, he was probably the only person other than Lawr that could keep a place immaculate, and his attention to detail was warming.
Setting his bag down beside the couch, he looked around for the man in question. "I hope I gave you enough time and didn't spring everything on you too suddenly." He called out.

"It's no problem," Jordan said. He turned the coffee pot on and turned around to lean against the counter while it brewed. "I wasn't really doing anything particular this afternoon. I've got duties in a little while, but you caught me in time to get things ready."
He gave Melvin a carefully neutral look. "Holding up okay?" he asked. "I wasn't sure if you were going to take me up on it or not."

He could hear the coffee machine starting up in the kitchen and hoped that Jordan was properly rewarded in life through whatever cosmic force ruled them all.
Sitting down, he leaned back and breathed out. "To be quiet honest, I wasn't sure I was even going to do it. Just after everything, I couldn't sit in the house anymore without feeling like something was going to just swell up and turn ugly. I don't know what would happen, but I didn't want to see what would happen." There was too much in him swirling around that it was becoming a noxious stew and that kind of mess didn't make pretty things.
"I really appreciate this."

"Probably smart," Jordan said, a little sadly, thinking of cold silences and awkward, ugly fights. "I hope getting some time away will help you clear your head some."
He nodded. "It's no problem, seriously. You want some coffee?"

"I will never not say Yes to that question." He said, starting to get up to help.
"It's weird, but while Lawr was upset, he didn't stop me. Don't know if that should be upsetting or a relief. To not have to fight someone to leave and then start a fight, but then you just ...know that it wouldn't be that hard. It almost felt too easy to just.....walk out of a house you called home for year."

Jordan turned to get two mugs out of the cupboard. "There's milk in the mini-fridge if you want it," he offered, "sugar's on the counter." Not that he was going to use either of those on his coffee, but he kept them around for people who wanted them and for other cooking purposes.
His hands paused for a moment before setting the mugs down on the counter. Too easy to just walk out -- that struck uncomfortably close to home, and to keep the painful memories from getting too immediate, he reminded himself that this was Lawrence they were currently talking about, a man who'd shown startlingly little compassion for who he hurt in the process of getting what he wanted. Still, Jordan felt a lot of sympathy for Melvin. "Leaving's not comfortable, even if staying isn't comfortable either," he said.

Melvin also didn't need anything, having conditioned himself through long nights in the Life labs to taking any coffee he could get (that wasn't experimental) in whatever state it was in - which was usually mud black.
Leaning against the counter, he crossed his arms and stared at the ground, thinking over Jordan's words. "Didn't stop me from doing an Pro and Con list over and over while I stared at my duffel bag. Just feels easier to do nothing and hope things sorta sort themselves out by doing nothing or hoping it would. Like learning to breath through smoke."
It was becoming harder and harder to breath in the house, and he knew sleeping along next to the person he wanted to sleep with was worse than sleeping miles away from then.
"Really wish Rodney was more of an a*****e so I could actually hate him more."

Jordan pressed a button and paused the machine's brew cycle long enough to pour two cups of coffee, setting one down beside Melvin and wrapping his hands around the other. He inhaled the steam and smiled briefly, absentmindedly. This was most definitely not lab-quality coffee.
The tension in his shoulders unwound just slightly; Melvin's experience diverged from his here, his own decision having been spur-of-the-moment, a desperate and failed attempt to provoke a reaction. Melvin had agonized beforehand, made his decision, if not more calmly, perhaps more rationally. He shook his head a little. "You still choke eventually if you're not getting enough air."
He put a hand briefly on Melvin's shoulder. "That's rough, man."

"Choking doesn't feel as bad when you think dying is the only other solution. Now I just sound like some teenager." He said, sighing as he took the mug and held it, giving it testing drink and once again glad for Jordan's fine tastes in coffee beans.
Breathing out, he felt slightly better.
"Everyone in the world wanted me to do this but me. Funny how that works. Despite even knowing how it shouldn't work, all the cons, all the bullshit that has happened that would make any sane person bury the man where no one would find him, I still wanted to be around. "

Jordan quirked a small smile. "Hey, getting the angst out of your system's important, that s**t's poisonous. I just request that if you're gonna play Linkin Park you use headphones."
More seriously, he said, "Loving someone can really ******** you up sometimes."

"In more ways than one. I don't think there are many people on quarantine just for being with someone." Oh the joys of hunter STDs.
He looked at the dark coffee for a moment, watching the steam rise.
"I kept adjusting to make the relationship work. With every change I just re-evaluated and took it from another angle. This is the first time really where I couldn't. Now I don't even know what to do. I'm just - cut off. Sure I can be his friend but I can't help feel bitter that after all this time that that is my consolation prize. That I have no say in the decision."

"That sucks," Jordan said. Melvin had tried so hard and thrown so much of himself into the relationship, only to be put aside for a new thrill. Lawr's an a*****e. Jordan kept the blunt statement to himself, said instead, "If you adjust yourself too much, it can be hard to figure out where the hell you are, after."
There was no comment on the subject of quarantine. It was hardly any of his business.

"I thought I had it figured out, but take out the center and I'm lost at sea." Without the stars he created as the center of his universe that he continued to build everything over and over again around, he was left in the dark looking for where he should be going.
"Le-Let's talk about something else."
