Strange snow flurries have been blowing through town, frosting entire buildings. Sometimes they come out of nowhere--overnight, or in the timespan of just a few short hours. Snow falls rapidly and ice coats doors and window, sealing them shut. These snow flurries are knocking out power, and worse--trapping people in buildings and cars. If one of these flurries hits, where do you wind up?
Jason stared at his homework, the only light he had on right now was the small light his lap desk gave him. It was his first blackout from snow and he wasn’t enjoying it. Part of the problem was not having a good reading light, so no fun books, but he wasn’t going to risk going outside right now because of how bad the weather was. He had talked to Tom for about an hour, but eventually his brother had to go back to his own studies and so here he was, stuck in his dorm room, trying to study by lap-desk light.
He had experienced black-outs before back in San Francisco, at least at his school, but considering that his parents had a back-up generator, he had never gone long without light at least. He could live without the internet, but flashlights weren’t a good substitute for a lamp. So he currently couldn’t do much, which is why he decided that if he was going to be stuck here, might as well keep his mind occupied with some studying so he wouldn’t fall behind. And considering that this school was quite a bit harder, there wasn’t such a thing as “too much studying”.
He would be leaving with his brother soon to go back to San Francisco, or at least he hoped he would. Many of the flights were being cancelled, and he was trying to be optimistic in believing that their flight wouldn’t be cancelled also. They didn’t have to worry about this snowy weather back in California, so it was starting to grate on his nerves a bit. He couldn’t understand why so many people traveled during the holidays at this point, unless it was somewhere without much snow. The weather was unpredictable, flights were getting cancelled, and the icy roads were dangerous to drive on, he couldn’t believe that it was that worth it to do all of that traveling. There were too many ways of communicating at this point.
He couldn’t blame them for wanting to be close to family. He had done the same thing by coming here instead of waiting the few years to graduate from high school and for his brother to come back. But here he was, stuck in his blackened dorm room with no power and getting attacked by mutant bats and plants just so he could hang out with his brother a bit more. He felt a bit guilty about it. He still hadn’t been able to do much on his own and relied quite a bit on his older brother still even though he was already 16!
Well, he could do one thing at least, study without asking his brother for help. He was determined to do that much at least. Though he had to rely on tutors at times, luckily though this school really wanted its’ students to succeed and tutors were plentiful in all subjects. But finals had been over and he had done well on all of them, or at least he hadn’t gotten anything below a B. So he figured that more studying wouldn’t hurt anything.
