The chill of the morning was the alarm clock for her. The outdoor living made getting up easy most nights and days. You were alert if not for any alarm but rather for the natural rhythm that was daylight and hunger. Most people used actual alarm clocks but Luna tended to just enjoy the whole aspect of living in a tent and waking up with daylight. Even if technically she could sleep indoors. Like a decent, normal person. There was just something nice and fun about camping, even if it was in your own backyard. The smell of the morning was wet earth, the taste of dew on the tongue and a sort of musty smell left from sleeping bags that had been in deep storage. It was the stuff Luna lived for. Small comforts in an otherwise hectic life. Working as a county clerk for the department of fish and wildlife was perhaps the best dang job in the entire world as far as she was considered. Good pay, she got to help hunters and supporting educational and lawful hunting practices and dealing sometimes with that cute ranger man who would travel by and make small talk.
Her life was bliss. Well mostly bliss anyway. She spent a great deal of it working and daydreaming sure but- she liked the mundane of it all. The clock in clock out nature. Getting issues taken care of and handling problems so they would get resolved. Customer service but without customers. Just more paperwork really. Most people didn't even mind all the paperwork anyway! They just wanted to be able to go out hunting and not get slapped with some crazy fine. Not to mention one bad hunter made it harder for the rest of them, so the local community that sprouted up in the local and many out of town groups were all super nice and supportive- plus they knew what they were doing, which lord have mercy made her life go all that much smoother when the seasons kicked into high gear. It was when people didn't know the law or expected her to break it that things got difficult.
No sir, I can't just let you fish on that lake and catch anything. Yes sir, I will have to report you given you just told told me you would violate the law and catch whatever you wanted license be damned. Sir, do not make me call in one of the rangers I am more than happy to explain the process and show you the breakdown of fees but do not threaten me and- Oh well okay sir if you insist.
She rather dislikes people like that. The laws existed for a reason. Animals had a right to live without being threatened by careless or reckless hunting. People like her were stewards of parks and those who were patron to them. Not to mention, no animals meant no healthy ecosystems and.. well.
Things went downhill very fast in such cases and events.
As she broke open her thermos of warm soup, Luna crawled out of her tent in the tiny backyard she had, smiling at the sunshine. She loved nature, she loved her job, she loved the wet grass under her feet and knowing that she probably had a bug bite or three on her legs from staying out too late the last night reading by the lantern light.
Brushing out the shaggy nest that was her bed head, she went inside, the hardwood floor a harsh contrast to the grass. Inside, the soft meow of her cat Felix made her begin her day with the usual filling of a food dish and setting the coffee maker on.
This was her life, and she did rather like it.
