Sylvia was almost surprised to find herself bored. Maybe not bored, but at least a bit antsy. Even though they had only been on two larger missions, there had been parties and activity for most of her time there – until the holidays. Everyone was travelling to and from the Prytaneum, home visiting family, searching for gifts, a little preoccupied in general… and though Sylvia was doing the same things, she found that any time spent at the Prytaneum could get quiet to the point of being unsettling for her. And the more she exercised and prepared for going on another big excursion, the more she got restless when things weren’t happening. Having two huge situations right out of the gate only for things to slow seemed… weird, somehow.

And so, she went in search of other friends who were also a little unsettled, bored, or driven for some other reason to checking out any projects they might be able to work on. She was somehow able to recruit Zan and Beth for an interesting trip to the Canadian Rockies to investigate reports of a ‘haunting’. Honestly, Sylvia wasn’t sure how she felt about that. Believing in ghosts should probably come easy with all they had discovered already. Perhaps it was the unknown of exactly what a ghost was, or was capable of. But however it turned out, if she could help figure out what was going on and help resolve it, well. That was something!

She was waiting at the Hearth for them, glad that for this situation they were able to prepare a bit. She had a light blue backpack with roses patterned across it slung from one shoulder, stuffed with what she considered necessities for at least one night away from home (a change of clothes, a toothbrush and travel toothpaste, a hairbrush, her phone charger). She also had a blanket tightly rolled in her arms, hugging it to her chest. She had been afraid of overpreparing or having too much to carry, so she’d crossed her fingers and hoped she didn’t forget anything truly important. Still, she was shifting her weight back and forth between her legs in a sort of anxious rocking as she waited for her companions, watching her feet and trying not to run over a list of ‘necessities’ to make sure she had everything for the twentieth time…

All Sylvia had to say was "haunting" and Beth started packing for the investigation. Whether a byproduct of her embarrassingly rebellious goth phase as a teenager, she had always been interested in the concept of ghosts and making contact with the spirit world. What past secrets would be revealed? What unfinished business or mysterious disappearance could be solved? It was a fascination undimmed by the cynicism of her new reality as a Chosen.

The possibilities were endless--which in this case energized her rather than scared her.

Beth met SYlvia near the Hearth, a large rolling suitcase clattering after her. Her essentials list was clearly not as restrained as the opal-haired Aphrodite-Chosen's. She had a backpack as well, filled with the "not fun stuff" like, well, supplies to survive in the wilderness.

Beth grinned widely at Sylvia once she drew up to her. "Ready for the seance, my dear?" She giggled, adjusting the strap of her backpack. Perhaps one day she would learn the value of packing lightly...but not today.

Zan had quite literally jumped at the chance to go somewhere, anywhere, especially with people he knew. Friends. One... no... both of them. Sure. He'd go with that. A group of... friendly co-workers on a mission to Canada. Zan sighed. He really needed to get better at this whole 'potentially more than temporary eye candy or superficial acquaintances' thing.

He hadn't ever thought of Canada as a bucket-list-worthy vacation destination, but he was rather excited about this trip nonetheless. At the very least, there would be a haunted house involved. Of all the things he'd brought—a second shirt, a sleeping bag, snacks, his dagger—Zan was sure his phone's camera would be the item he'd get the most use out of. At the barest hint of a ghost, he'd be on it like the paparazzi.

But first, they had to get there. Zan took one last look at his hair, grabbed his bag, and hurried off toward the Hearth.

He smiled at the women as he bounced to a stop nearby, wiggling his fingers in greeting. "Seance, hm? I thought this was more Ghostbusters than Ghost." His poofy, red shoulders lifted in a shrug. "Either's fun. How're things?" He was surprised to find he felt a little guilty that he hadn't sought out Sylvia in particular, but the days since Halloween had run together in a mix of training, traveling, and more training that had left him little time to do anything personal.

Sylvia was distracted from her feet by the sound of a large suitcase rattling nearby. She wasn’t sure if she was surprised to find Beth wheeling it or not. Goodness, that was a lot of luggage. Sylvia was almost sad she hadn’t brought more – almost anything she could have thought of would have seemed reasonable compared to that bag. Though, to be fair, they didn’t really know how long they were going to be away. Beth just might be the one laughing in the end.

She offered a bright smile of her own in greeting, but before she could respond further she heard Zan’s voice. She turned in time to catch his wave, and gave a silly wiggle of her own fingers back, chuckling. “Things are fine, but about to get spooky, apparently. I guess we’ll have to see what this particular haunting is like.” She, for one, had no idea what to expect. Séance with floating tables, neon green blob-monsters, or a projector rigged in every room, just about anything was a possibility as far as she was concerned.

“Everyone ready? No one have any last-minute thoughts of something they forgot to pack?” She was trying to run over her mental check-list once again, and wishing she had a travel pillow. At least she couldn’t remember anything specific she had definitely forgotten. She was, however, almost sure that there was something – she just wouldn’t know it until they arrived at their destination. Once the others agreed that they had everything they needed, she would be more than happy to follow them through the Hearth and towards her reminder of whatever it was her bag was lacking.

Beth briefly thought about what she could have possibly forgotten before shaking her head. "I think I remembered the kitchen sink this time, so I'm good to go!" She laughed a little at her own joke before trailing off. The truth was she had unpacked and repacked her bags at least three times as her anticipation got the better of her. And a lot of it might even prove useful! From sleeping bags to pillows to blankets, to her not insubstantial laundry list of beauty products. "The lovely thing about having some warning before being shoved into the Hearth means we can actually plan for likely scenarios!"

She turned her (stylish and still heeled) boots toward the Hearth, but made no other move toward it. She wasn't about to take charge here.

"Yeah, the advance warning definitely helps," Zan agreed, nodding at Beth's comment. "I think I'm good too though." After the missions they'd already suffered through, he was confident this trip would seem heavenly no matter how little he'd brought. He might have preferred only entering into situations that ensured his personal cleanliness and comfort, but he wasn't opposed to roughing it for a few more days, as long as he made it out alive on the other side.

With that decided, Zan didn't wait to get going. When neither of the other Chosen made any move toward the fire, he grinned and announced, "After me, ladies," before bouncing forward into the Hearth. It was only when he found himself alone on the other side that he wondered if he should have offered to carry a bag or two.

Hm.

Well.

He'd just have to remember to do that later.

Sylvia laughed at Beth’s joke as well, amused and glad that Beth had such a good humor and awareness of her own crazy packing. She had to assume that there was a reason for all of it, though on the surface she found it excessive. If nothing else, she was sure that Beth would like to be prepared, especially after the Bayou.

And, indeed, she had to give an eager nod of agreement as well when the others mentioned the usefulness of advanced notice. They also at least had a small blurb of information to run with about what the quest was, though she didn’t think it entirely useful. It didn’t really help them figure out how long they would be there or how much work they would be doing, necessarily. But she had still been able to pack more for this than for their larger missions so far.

“Good.” She gave a nod and smiled at them both, adjusting her hold on her blanket. She was grateful when Zan took the lead and bounced through the Hearth first, chuckling at his invitation and rolling her eyes a bit in good humor. Once he was gone, she looked to Beth and took a deep breath. “See you on the other side?” She gave a nod, as if answering her own question, and then stepped forward to follow Zan.

She arrived behind him, still finding herself a little relieved to be in the right place after stepping through a large amount of flame. It was still a bit weird, even if she had gone through the Hearth a number of times by now. She carefully stepped aside to make way for Beth and looked about their new surroundings.

“So… I guess this is at least as creepy as you’d expect for a haunted house situation…” It could have been worse, but there was definitely something about it that made her feel unsettled. She had never been at the front of the line into any new area, so the emptiness of it felt a bit strange as well, only adding to her uneasiness. Still, she took a breath and tried to shake it off. “Well. I guess we should find a good place to leave our stuff before we start ‘investigating’?”

Beth gave Sylvia a few seconds before she followed. The scene that met her eyes was both familiar and unlike anything she had seen. They were in the living room of a house likely used for seasonal vacations. Multi-roomed, two stories, plenty of amenities for the relaxing family, couple, or businessperson. And, as shown by the cold light filtering through the ceiling to floor windows, with views of the lake to die for.

She looked around, frowning. "This doesn't really have the feeling of a place that's been locked up for months. It's not stuffy enough. And where are the furniture covers? Has someone been here recently?" She wrinkled her nose. Ghosts, she was okay with, but she did not relish the thought of meeting with the current owners of the house.

She looked at Sylvia and nodded. "Finding a place to sleep or camp out would be smart. We could find the master bedroom or set up here? I don't think we should be too far away from the fireplace. Or each other." She cast a glance at Zan, by far the one she knew least in the group, but there was something to fighting with the man that made her think that he was trustworthy. For the most part.

She was grateful that she wouldn't have to use the more camp-y gear she had brought, but she also hoped that the blankets and sleeping bag and pillows would be enough to keep her comfy during the night, especially if they elected to stay in the living room where there were couches, but mostly floor.

Ghosts or not, this place was far nicer than Zan had expected. He couldn't have explained the lake house that had lived in his head prior to this, but it didn't have two stories or a gorgeous view. It didn't have a master bedroom. Once everyone was safely through, he moved to the nearest chair, running his fingers along its back.

"Any place we pick in here is going to be really exposed with all the doors and windows. I say we stick close to the fire too, just in case we need to escape."

Zan kept his voice low at first, so as not to stir up any potential ghosts, but he didn't like how young he sounded. How unsure. He stood taller then, shifting his bag higher on his shoulders as he cast an optimistic glance at Sylvia. "We should leave our things here for now, maybe in a closet if we're afraid someone human might still be in here. As we're doing an initial sweep of all the rooms, we can see if there's anywhere better to sleep." It was a decent idea, he thought, and it sounded so professional too. Initial sweep. Zan smirked at his own cleverness.

Sylvia’s nose wrinkled as well, and she shook her head at Beth’s comments. “I guess they didn’t even give themselves time to properly prepare the house for their absence.” She didn’t like the idea of running into the owners any more than Beth did, but she was somehow quite certain they wouldn’t even have the chance. First of all, she didn’t think they’d have been sent to an occupied location without warning. But there was something about the place that just felt empty. She wasn’t sure she could properly describe it… there was no warmth, for one thing.

She squinted at the lower floor, open as it was, wondering if there might be a guest room of some kind on the lower level. Some modern houses, at least, were including such things, but she wasn’t sure if this was a recent build or remodel or what exactly. She nodded somewhat absently at Beth and Zan’s suggestion that they stay close to the fireplace – it made sense. And it would be better to stick together when sleeping, for sure.

Zan adjusting his backpack caught her attention and she caught his gaze. She noticed the change in his tone, too, and narrowed her eyes at him slightly, one corner of her mouth slowly gentling into a smirk of her own. He was posturing a bit, and it was kinda cute. Look at him smirk. She shifted her weight, popping a hip and raising a brow at him. She tossed a nod to the side, “Alright, that sounds like a good plan.” She unloaded the backpack from her shoulder onto a nearby couch and propped her rolled-up blanket on top. She wasn’t terribly concerned with finding a closet, but the others could if they wanted, and if they did she might toss her stuff in with theirs just for the sake of it.

“So, we’ll do the ‘initial sweep’ all together? Start down here and make our way up to the next level?” Depending on what they found, that would allow them to disperse after searching, unless they found a better place to ‘set up camp’ and wanted to do that first. She wandered to the large, lake-view windows and peered at the wintery landscape while she waited for the others to either agree with her plan or suggest something different. She ran a finger along one of the supports of the tall windows and prepared to head for either the kitchen or the stairs depending on the others.

Beth pulled her suitcase against the wall, next to a couch, where it would be less likely to be seen. She set her backpack next to it, but kept a hold of her purse. If they were to go searching separately, she'd at least want to keep a hold on her cellphone. "I'd like to stick together, if at all possible."

Assuming she had been heard and would either be followed or not, she wandered toward the next room. As she passed one of the end tables, she noticed there was a picture frame face down on the ground. From the way it looked, it had been jostled and fallen off. She bent down to pick it up, wondering if it was a clue. As she flipped it up, she briefly registered that it was a picture of a family--two parents and a child. But her eyes widened as she saw their bloated bodies, their dark tongues poking out from between blue lips, the skin from their hands sloughing off like gloves--

Beth jumped and practically threw the picture away from her, skittering back on her heels. "Sweet Hera," She hissed, hand automatically going to the sigil pinned to her jacket. She threw a frightened look back at the other two. "I...." She didn't care how distressed she looked. She quickly walked back to the group. "Something tells me we should probably stay away from the lake."

Oh what she wouldn't give to have Misha and Brian there. Especially Brian. He would be the rational one, grounding her now very skittish thoughts. Misha would sling an arm over her and say something comforting and then something funny. As it was, she had Sylvia and Zan.

Prompt
16: You pick up a picture to look at it more closely. For a moment, all of the people within look blue and bloated, like they've been drowned. Then it returns to normal.

Zan temporarily abandoned his bag soon after Sylvia and Beth did, only vaguely concerned that the house's owners might show up and force a confrontation. Unless they were packing shotguns, the likelihood of any living people being brave enough to harm the Chosen before they made their escape seemed slim, but that might have been arrogance talking. He left his coat behind too, taking only his dagger and phone along for the search.

He had planned to split up eventually, but he found himself following Beth at a distance for now, at least until the lights in the hall flickered and died, plunging him into a darkness too deep to be natural. Zan stopped so suddenly that his shoes almost squeaked, arms splayed in search of a wall, and as he inched forward, an eerie green glow appeared right at the edge of his vision. A spherical light no bigger than his fist drifted past, carrying with it a musical hum that came from everywhere and nowhere at once. He only hesitated for a moment, then reached toward it, but before his fingers could find its edge, he blinked or breathed wrong or something, and the light winked out.

"s**t," he muttered. His heart had sped up in his surprise, leaving him with a touch of adrenaline jitters to mix with his disappointment. He was failing spectacularly on the taking pictures of ghosts front. "This place..." Zan huffed out a breathy laugh, noticing Beth's distress and stifling his giddy reaction before any more chuckles could join the first. "That sounds all right. We shouldn't have to go near it to take care of the house, right? You okay?"

Sylvia nodded at Beth’s suggestion. “That sounds good to me. Good to stay in a group, just in case.” Her right shoulder lifted in a shrug as she looked back at her companions. In case of what, she wasn’t sure, but it couldn’t hurt to stick together. If anything happened, at least that way they wouldn’t have to take anyone’s word for it – in theory…

She followed Beth’s lead and turned for the kitchen as well, though she looked back out at the lake once more. This meant that she wasn’t watching ahead when Beth saw the picture frame – and she wasn’t looking behind to catch whatever happened to Zan. She heard Beth’s gasp and turned to see her retreating towards them, fright written all over her features. Her brows knit in concern and she met Beth partway in her retreat, reaching a hand out to hover at the other woman’s back. “Honey?” She hadn’t noticed the picture frame – so much for not having to take each other’s word. She hoped that her prompting would lead Beth to explain whatever it was that frightened her so much. She nodded at Beth’s caution and Zan’s subsequent comment.

“I think we should be able to stay in the house. If we have to go outside for some reason,” she shrugged, glancing at Zan, “we’re here together so that we can look out for each other.” She offered an encouraging smile, the once-hovering hand reaching to curl around Beth’s waist and pull her into a hug. She wasn’t sure what had freaked Beth out, but she was going to stick close to her until she settled. She set her sights back on the kitchen and moved from the hug to lightly take hold of Beth’s hand as she started moving again. If Beth didn’t want to stay connected, it would be easy enough to let their hands fall apart again as they kept going. “Now, let’s see about this kitchen.”

She could have guessed, but it was affirmed that it was a gorgeous kitchen as it came into sight. Sylvia wasn’t a cook, she hardly spent time in the kitchen (for her own safety and everyone else’s), but even she was a little jealous of the setup this house had. The aesthetics were modern – if this house wasn’t built recently, she wouldn’t be surprised if it had been updated. Warm cabinets complimented dark granite countertops and framed stainless steel appliances. There was plenty of natural light streaming in, but recess lighting and a few hanging glass lanterns over the bar opposite the sink would otherwise provide plenty. Sylvia approached the bar, more comfortable in an observer’s position than on the side of creation. She let her free hand run over the granite, “Well, if I knew how to utilize this room, I think I would appreciate it even more.” She smirked back at the others, “As it is, I think the only thing that seems off in here is me.” Still, as they had already learned, it didn’t seem like whatever was going on would appear to everyone present.

Beth was automatically reaching back for Sylvia as she sensed more than saw the opal-haired woman move toward her. Addressing, the group in general, but prompted by Zan's words, Beth said, "Staying in the house is definitely on the agenda. You don't have to tell me twice." If she noticed the flickering lights or the orb, it was tucked into the back of her concerns as her eyes fastened themselves to the upside down picture frame. It had landed on the couch, face up, its grotesque horror gone. Instead, the family was rendered in full color, dated, sure--from a time when developing photos and sticking them in picture frames was still The Thing To Do. But there was no evidence of the strangeness that sent her skittering.

She let Sylvia pull her by her waist to her side. Her face remained turned toward the picture, frowning at this development.

To all inquiries, she replied, "I'm...I'm fine. Just a trick of the light, I guess." She gave Sylvia a shaky smile and followed her into the kitchen. "Safety in numbers and all that," she muttered, casting her eyes around the kitchen. It was lovely, but only served to remind her of the expectation of Hera Chosen--one she had yet to make good on. Sylvia disengaged to wonder at the aesthetics of the room and Beth let her, standing in the corner of the counter and cabinets to let Zan step into the room so they could all be in sight.

Trying to be objective, she looked around, wondering what seemed amiss. She opened to fridge--which was running, she noticed--and found it surprisingly well-stocked. She noted the brands purchased, all ordinary and a few store bought. She briefly considered pouring herself a glass of orange juice before reasoning that it wouldn't be too polite to take food from someone else's table. "I wonder how long they were expecting this to last." She peered at the expiration date on the milk. It was still a ways off. Frowning slightly, and trying to shake the sense of fear, she closed the door and turned to consider her two companions.

"So. If there are people here. Are we sure they're safe? Like, should we be looking for them? Or trying to avoid them?"

He was glad to keep moving after his own creepy personal pyrotechnic show, and Zan trailed closely behind Beth and Sylvia into the kitchen, greeting the room with a low whistle. This place was something out of a rich family's reality show, and for a handful of distracted moments he was able to push aside the pervasive feeling of being watched in order to properly take in the room's decadence. He didn't know how to cook anything more elaborate than macaroni and cheese, but he was sure he'd look like a proper chef making some here, ghosts or not. He found it a little odd that the fridge was running, but he supposed there was no reason for suspicion. Cleaning out all of the food and unplugging appliances weren't the first things he would have thought of had he been running from a haunting. That was, if the people here had run at all. He might have been more firmly of the opinion that they weren't still here to watch out for, but he offered Beth a more vague reply just in case he was wrong.

"Both? Maybe?" Zan opened the nearest cabinet, carefully rifling through. "If we're going to be checking out every room, we'll probably find everyone who needs to be found, good or bad. And if they're hiding from us, well, that's a whole 'nother problem." He finished his cursory examination quickly in spite of the size of the room, running his hands over the nearest counter top as if not quite sure what to do with them now. "I don't think we'll be able to completely avoid anyone looking to hurt us, so... we should just be careful if we can. And keep moving."

To be honest, he'd expected more spooky shenanigans after the weird light, and the longer the three of them went without, the harder his imagination worked on anticipating what might come next.

"Just out of curiosity, neither of you saw anything weird in the hall, right?"
