It might have been winter, but the sky was blue with plenty of sunlight. Some plants were starting to show the change in color, but some of the flowers still remained quite green and cheery. There was still a hint of chill in the air, but little Out of Orbit didn't seem to remember the chill when she saw pretty flowers decorating the walkways in the park.

Now, one would think that the little filly with long hair would have learned her lesson a while back about paying attention to where she stepped.

Yet here she was, paying more attention to the scenery than her hooves.

However, the filly soon enough snapped back to reality when she felt a sharp pain from her scalp as she stepped in her mane again, then fell forward, tumbling forward and literally getting wrapped up in her own dark hair.

To make matters worse, the pathway was starting to slope a bit, leading to a gentle hill. Letting out a sound that most closely resembled a dizzy cat, the filly rolled and rolled until the poor girl was basically an entangled mess of hair.

One pathetic word escaped the filly: "...h-help..."

Winter was not the favorite season of Lavender Lace and her affinity for aromatics. She had preoccupied herself with a sad, limp looking little flower that had lasted longer than most, but was fading quickly with the creeping chill in the air.

Depressing, She thought as she lifted it slightly with one hoof and let it drop with a heavy sigh.

She was quietly focused on her own thoughts as she stared grimly down at that spot in the side of the path when she was suddenly assaulted by the universe in her state of entrenched vulnerability. By a rolling ball of hair! Which had just flown right at her!

She was a few notes into a rising screech when it registered the tangled hairball was a filly. Gears shifted, the struggle was softened. A single hoof was raised to nudge it a bit and see what side was up, or at least stop it from gaining further trajectory towards another innocent.

"Hello."

Like there was any appropriate greeting for this sort of encounter.

Out of Orbit felt something press up against her briefly, but what, she couldn't tell. She might have been quite stuck in her own long hair, incapable of freeing herself. She squirmed slightly, as if to signal she was indeed still alive to the voice that greeted her.

In a tiny voice, she returned the greeting.

"...uh... hello...?"

Her hoof twitched a bit. "It's... um... a nice day?"

She blinked as the dizzy blur of colors started to settle. Apparently this lovely pegasus mare had been the victim of her haphazard-hair-disaster.

"...I'm...sorry... but could you maybe help me... a... bit... I seem a bit... um...stuck..."

Lavender Lace's feathers ruffled with a slight shudder as she tried to empathize with the distress of being tangled in so much hair. The scalp pain. The split end damage.

She primped at her curls in subconscious reaction to the thought of it all.

"Dear, I'm surprised you've had the time to look to the weather at all to tell," She lightly teased as she took to rotating the hairball with her hooves, looking for a spot to begin untangling. "This is quite a piece of work. How did this happen?"

The filly's world was slowly rotating, which was not a bad sign if it meant getting free of her hair-trap. However, a subtle reminder of her blunder came in the form of a question.

Which caused a chain reaction, leading to rosy cheeks and a bit of an embarrassed stutter.

"I... um... y-you s-s-see... um..." The filly briefly went silent before answering "...I... I t-tripped... on my hair..."

She pinched her eyes shut, as if trying to avoid the disaster of crying like the last time this had happened. However, it was tricky, since this tangled mess was far worse than the last time.

"Oh... dear..."

The hesitation in Lavender Lace's voice was not actually from the physical mess so much as the issue with the filly who was beginning to show obvious signs of emotional distress and distress in foals was absolutely not the reserved mare's strong suit.

She tried not to seem too put out as she busied herself untangling strands to loosen the hold, cringing every time she found a knot that was not going to resolve itself kindly.

"Well, honestly, dear," She said, each pause in her speech a secret to delay as she struggled to think of something worthwhile to ease the discomfort of the situation. "I will let you in on a secret-- Top secret-- But the fact is it has happened to most of us blessed with more luxuriant manes."

She did her best to brush a bit of hair away from her face in order to assure she could see the small wink offered.

It was a lie, of course. Lavender's own mane as a filly was rather short and the curly texture kept it far out of stepping range. But a white lie never hurt anyone, and heaven knows she had her own harrowing experiences with tangles and knots.

That was quite the secret!

The filly absorbed the words, and peered open her eyes just in time for that small wink. It was nearly impossible to imagine such a lovely mare tripping up on her own rather hefty mane.

Anything was possible though!

The pegasus' work seemed to be quite effective, for little Out of Orbit's front leg didn't feel nearly as tight against her body. As best as she could, she somewhat gestured to herself with the one lesser-captive leg towards herself.

"M-my name's Out of Orbit! It's nice to meet you!" She wiggled a hoof at the pegasus, as if waving hello.

Success! One hoof free! But the victory was cut short when the little filly started waving it at her.

Oh, greetings. Lavender would have been embarrassed at missing introductions in any other encounter, but given the unusual circumstances, decided to cut herself some slack on account of the whole tangled mess that had just introduced itself as Out of Orbit.

Her composure only faltered for a second. Then gave a little bow of her head in her own greeting. "My name is Lavender Lace, and it is a pleasure to meet you, Little Miss Orbit."

But then she got back to work. "Now, let's get you untangled. Does this happen often?"

"Ooooo!!!" the filly fawned. "You have such a lovely name! It is nice to meet you too, Miss Lavendar Lace!"

The pegasus' question shouldn't have caught the filly off guard, but there the question was, facing the little Phony in the face.

Where as the answer to the question was probably pretty obvious, Out of Orbit couldn't help but feel embarrassed that this sort of thing happened with her hair more often than she'd like.

There was silence, a bit of fidgeting, and a bit of lip nibbling as the little filly seemed to evidently hesitate answering the question. It was clearly not a topic she liked to talk about.

Yet, the little filly knew better than to lie or to stay silent.

"...i-it... happens... often enough... this... isn't my first time tripping..."

Lavender Lace in all of her vanity couldn't resist giving her mane a small fluff at the fawning from her new little fan. "Why thank you, darling."

She wasn't indifferent to the embarrassment that seemed to spark from her question, but she hadn't meant it to be embarrassing and decided the best way to insist it wasn't to to continue acting like it was a completely normal thing to ask. Informational purposes and all that.

"Well," She said, having moved Out of Orbit's messy mane off of entangling her general... entire body. "Every fabulous filly needs to learn some secrets about mane maintenance someday. Come along, let's go find a brush to get some of these more stubborn knots."

She turned and started strutting as if nothing was wrong, figuring that it would simply rub off on the situation. OoO hadn't lied, and Lavender had no interest in giving credibility to any embarrassment or shame that came along as baggage.

Out of Orbit may have been slow on realizing she was freed. Lavendar Lace was walking away, and initially the little filly thought it was necessary to roll after the pegasus.

It only took one roll for her to realize that her limbs were actually loose. Quietly to herself, she muttered "...when did that...?"

However, before she finished the statement, she shrugged it off, realizing the more important issue at hand: Lavendar Lace was getting leaving her behind!

Scrambling to get up to her hooves, Out of Orbit (clumsily) scampered next to the confident mare. Once at Lavendar Lace's side, the filly asked "Do you think I am ready to learn?"

"Of course," Lavender Lace responded with a hint of a smile creeping to the corners of her mouth as she embraced the slight silliness of the situation. "A harrowing right of passage, but the alternative, dearest Orbit, is a hair cut. And your mane is so lovely."

She paused her gait to lean near to the little filly as if she was about to share another secretly, and in a hushed tone, she added, "Although between you and I, you could probably pull off a short mane-do, if you were so inclined."

And then business resumed as normal. "Although if you were so inclined, you might have explored that option the first time you found yourself in this predicament?"

Now, Out of Orbit did not exactly understand all of the fancy words coming out of Lavender Lace's mouth, but they certainly sounded fancy and knowledgeable!

She did understand the gist of what was being said, and her hair almost stood on end from the suggestion. She might not have enjoyed tripping on her hair, but she could never imagine a life with short hair. Perhaps it had something to do with how impeccable her mother's hair was. Perhaps it had something to do with feeling guilty over abandoning the locks after all this time.

"Oh no no no no no! I could never cut my hair! I love my hair!"

She lifted a hoof to try and cradle the hair, but then thought better of that gesture, assuming she'd probably tumble and repeat the predicament from moments earlier. Instead, Out of Orbit just seemed to bounce about with each step, now excited about the secrets she'd be learning!

"No, no, of course not," Lavender Lace agreed ith a passive little nod, although focused on the task ahead. While her mane was a point of pride, she also knew there was a fine line in establishing too much one's self-esteem in it and wasn't entirely sure how to tread a fine line with Out of Orbit.

Colts and fillies were not Lavender's strong suit, she often preferred to keep her distance due to a perceived lack of required finesse for little ones.

But! She did know her way around one thing.

They had reached their destination and with her supplies now at hand (or hoof) she got down to work.

It didn't take long. Or did it? Even with an assortment of combs and brushes, conditioning products and detanglers, getting OoO's tangled mane sorted out was work. She wasn't sure exactly how much time it ate up, but she was still feeling accomplished when she should run a comb all the way through.

"I think we've minimized the damage!" She said once she put the comb down. "You should probably use a moisturizing conditioner for a bit to keep the breakage and split ends down from the stress though. What do you think?"

She nudged a mirror to the smaller pony.

Out of Orbit had no idea at the beginning of the day she would be getting a full on spa treatment! If she had known, she would have prepared for it as best as a filly could. Yet the Pegasus must have truly been a hair wizard! There were so many supplies for hair. However, the trickiest part the little Phony encountered that day was not her tumble, but the aftermath of said tumble.

She truly wanted to be good. She wanted to sit perfectly and politely. Yet tangles were tough. They were mildly painful (though Lavendar Lace seemed to know what she was doing, so it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been with an unskilled phony), and the filly couldn't help but occasional fidget as the mare worked. Yet as the Pegasus nudged the mirror to her and gave her words of wisdom to the filly, Out of Orbit couldn't help but admire her work!

"Oh wow, I have never seen my hair like this before! Are you a hair stylist? Or a wizard? What potions did you use? You do such good work!" It was true, being a filly, her hair had never been this smooth looking before. Maybe if she were a bit more confident, she'd try making some duck lips for the mirror. Instead the filly settled on a small smile.
