“Real magic can never be made by offering someone else's liver. You must tear out your own, and not expect to get it back.”

King Haggard rules over the desolate Hagsgate. Some of his subjects say he was born from a cloud covering the sun. A legend says a witch created his castle for him. When he refused to pay her for her work, she cursed him, declaring he would live in the castle until his greed caused the sea to overflow. To lose his interest is dangerous. What he forgets not only ceases to exist, it never existed in the the first place. The only things he desires are unicorns. They fill him with joy. The first first time he felt it he thought he was going to die. He must have them.

All of them

The mist in the woods gained a garnet glow. The clouds had surrounded the moon and stars. The only light was that from a hungry glow. The thunder of massive hooves echoed. It was followed by the crash of toppled trees and the cries of fleeing animals. Their burrows and nests were destroyed. The ominous servant of King Haggard had no sympathy. It could not be stopped. It chased close after a blessing of unicorns. Their pure, white bodies reflected the fiery glow behind them. Their brilliant majesty was overwhelmed by the unrelenting force herding them through the forest.

A sleek silhouette shot across the forest’s floor. It was a vixen. A cross fox driven with purpose. She had to find a unicorn. The only unicorn in the woods who Haggard’s mighty servant had overlooked.

I have to find her! She might be my last chance!

She stopped and listened. There were so many animals fleeing it was difficult for her to focus. Her ears perked up. She heard a sound that was far away from the others. She rushed towards the noise, desperately hoping that she would find the unicorn.

Early dusk had been a time to watch the woodland creatures scurry into their homes for sleep. It was a time where she could leisurely stroll away into the forest, her hooves against the soft earth under the glow of the warm sun, descending into the distance. The blessing of unicorns nearby settled elsewhere, but she didn't want to be near them. Unicorns were vain and in that vanity inadvertently scorned those who were different. While the coat of her hair and mane were white, reflective of lights, her eyes shone a bright green and the mark under her horn red. Not a large significance, but enough to that she had begun seeking refuge in a cave away from the others, if at least to avoid the strange looks.

Though the season bore cool nights, this night felt a warmth like no other had before as she slept soundly on the bed of leaves beneath her. Some years ago the cave had belonged to a bear, but with the magic of the other unicorns it became aware of the prey scarcity and went on its own way. Yet, the odor of the damp fur had permeated so many years later. Something about it was strangely comforting. It brought a sense of safety with it, like a hug of protection around her until the dawn returned.

Flickering light on the walls around her stirred her quickly and her ears flicked at the noises of crashing trees which pulled her from her sleep and back up to her feet. She neighed softly, shaking her head and moving cautiously to see the forest. While the trees near her seemed fine, the ones from afar were crying out in pain as the fire took them, lighting up the night sky and blocking out the calm night beyond. With the wind came the sting of ash and the unicorn shifted uncomfortably, whinnying softly as she moved through the maze of trees, towards the path of whatever lit the ember now burning the forest.

It didn't take very long to find the trail of whatever beastly creature had done it. Trees laid, broken from the force and charred in ash from the heat coming from it. She stared, leaning her nose down to a tree, but with an immediate recoil and she reared, stomping down from the foul smell of it. The cries and crashes were further now, away from the forest, but the broken path lie in front of her. Slowly, she moved behind it, staring at the strange marks. Whatever had been there, had not been alone... hundreds of marks trampled over it before the deep cloven hoof marks went over it.

Curious She thought, sniffing the air and moving with greater urgency along the path, creaking over the broken trees and moving around when it called for it. Above her the branches from the leftover trees were stripped bare and not a single cry from a bird called out from nearby. If they are gone... While the immediate area was not in danger, the billowing clouds of fire were ahead and she moved towards it, staring up in horror.

Quickly, she moved into a gallop towards the nearby pond, stopping close and panting, staring at the sight in front of her. Flames spread out far above her, reflecting off the pond like a great fireball. Orange arms moved out, taking the forest and raising the black smoke high above. She coughed and moved back, her eyes burning and her horn gleaming. Unicorn magic was never predictable, but it did manage to blow a little wind to give her some relief, whatever little there was. And how could there be? Her home was on fire, what was she supposed to do?

The vixen stopped at the edge of a pond. The smoke filling the forest was killing her vision and sense of smell. The water from the pond reflected the burning forest. It looked like a pool of fire. Then she saw a shimmering form move in the reflection. Her head shot up and she saw the lone unicorn. She frantically skittered towards her objective.

“You must leave here now! He’ll take you like the others if you don’t!” The fox looked around and her body shivered. She slowly moved closer to the unicorn. It appeared that King Haggard’s monstrous servant hadn’t caught wind of this unicorn. “You’re lucky he didn’t find you. He’ll return some day for certain.” The source of the destruction had left with the unicorns. However, the inferno it made was still spreading.

I’m lucky too. Who knows how long it could take for me to find another unicorn. If there are any left.
The vixen’s ears went down at the thought. They rose back up she looked at the unicorn’s face. It's been a while since I've been this close to one. She’s different from the rest. Subtle differences, but she should still be enough.

The unicorn was startled and turned her eyes down to the vixen below her. "What..?" Her voice was dry, latent with rasp as it had been a very long time she she had actually spoke to another creature and her eyes fluttered, fighting against the ash and she coughed. "The others?" She stared beyond the fires into the horizon, and back down at her companion, slowly walking along in the way of the broken and downed path.

Why the others? Why take them? She retreated back to her thoughts as she made her way around the edge of the pond, following close to the water. "Whatever has taken them... must return them."

“The Red Bull… that’s what has taken them. You haven’t heard of King Haggard?” The vixen flicked her tail then stretched as she followed the unicorn. “He commands the Red Bull who herds any unicorn it finds to his castle at Hagsgate. He wants all of them. And from what I’ve heard, he has almost all of them.” She put her head down. Her breaths were slow from the smoke. She swayed a little before she lurched forward. It wasn’t just the smoke getting to her. She was exhausted. She tried to stay alert.

“Return them? He’d never do that. Wait… you want to go there?” Her eye slits widened. This makes things easier. I didn’t want to try to convince an immortal.

"Mortal concerns aren't my own... I know very little of their world..." She mumbled to herself as she walking along, glancing back at the fox with concern. "Are you injured?" She asked as she took a few more steps, following after the destruction. Her thoughts were swirling though. Red Bull? To get all of the unicorns Her pace quickened at the falling of an old tree from the fire, staring down at the devastation with a soft whine, moving along her way.

"What purpose would a man have for unicorns?" She asked.

The fox struggled to keep up with the unicorn. “Who knows. He’s consumed with greed. Most humans I’ve met are. He’s not the only one who would wants a unicorn. There are lots of people out there would keep them in cages for coins or their own amusement. At least they don’t hunt you for your skin.”

She stumbled forward and laid flat on the ground. She struggled to keep her tea green eyes open. “Damn this curse. I haven’t slept in days. I rubbed a magician the wrong way and they casted a spell on me. Now every time I sleep, I have the same dream. I dream a white fire is chasing me. And every time I wake up, I feel a horrible, burning pain it starts at the tip of my tail and works its way up. It feels like a fire crawling across my whole body. And the feeling lasts longer each time… But… I can only go so long without sleeping.” Her breathing slowed and her head twitched. “They said they would lift spell as soon as King Haggard released all of his unicorns. They know this will never happen.”

She gave the fox a wary look, looking back ahead and stopped when she did, staring down. "That seems pointless..." The words were hollow and she glanced down at her story, moving her head down. "You may ride on my back, if you wish. I must make haste after them or else they'll be lost." Her eyes wandered back to the sky as it was lit by the fire, her horn glowing softly. "This King Haggard must truly be an evil man..."

“Most men are,” coughed the disillusioned fox. Her energy had been drained from all of the running and fending off sleep. Her trust in humans had faded long ago. She gathered her strength and jumped onto the unicorn’s smooth back. “I’ll guide you as far as I can. But the dreams will take me at some point. I’ll try not to scratch or bite you in my horrible slumber. Just follow the burned path of ruin.” The fading fox was silent and motionless for a while. The dreams slowly pulling her in. “At least I feel safer on the back of one who’s time is endless.”

She passed out soon after. She shook as she slept. The white fire in her dreams was brighter than ever. It grabbed at her tail and began burning it’s way up her. She whimpered and squirmed. Her slumber was never rejuvenating. The two states of being had melted together. She was always awake, even she was dreaming.

"Endless..." The unicorn doubted her own immortality, shaking her head from side. "Sleep well, if you can..." She continued to walk on after the wake of destruction. Whatever had been there was far away now, the thundering noise of hooves silent as the night pressed on. While not very fast, she was diligent in her movements, staring up at the moon and back down at the path in front of her. Beyond, she could see the amber glow of more fire, but it died down quickly.

It's moving too quickly... It would be impossible to catch it at her pace, but it might be better to sneak up on it anyways. As the night dragged into day, she continued to follow...

As their journey brought them closer to Hagsgate, the days became dimmer. Clouds kept the sun hidden, melting the days and nights into a single line of misery. And as her curse worsened, the fox strained to tell night from day and dream from reality. The burning pain lasted longer each time and she could only go so long without sleep. When they finally saw King Haggard’s castle in the distance, the pain was constant. The only thing keeping the defeated vixen together were the always unwavering words of the unicorn.

“Careful not to be seen by any wandering men, “ she warned the unicorn. “Men will not see you as a unicorn. You’ll only appear as a white mare to them. But a pretty and healthy horse is still a thing of great value to the people here. Most of the animals here have already suffered from Haggard’s miserable reign.” She scanned the surroundings to the best of her ability. She couldn’t handle any delays.

As they moved closer to the borders of Hagsgate, she became increasingly nervous. “The Red Bull could be near. I don’t want to have come all this way only to lose you to that beast, my friend.” Her ears went down and she nudged the unicorn’s neck with her head. Her heart beat faster.

I won’t let Haggard have you. Not while I need you...

While she was unaccustomed to having a companion for more than a few moments in time, the vixen was proving comforting at the least. Immortality had left her jaded and unaware of time passing, but with her companion she was grounded by time as she continued to walk. It felt like forever as she moved along the trails of men, but as the vixen had warned her she soon took to the lesser traveled, following the setting sun over and over.

She rarely stopped, but even immortal beings needed sleep and water, food here and there. As for her companion... the unicorn had become increasingly worried about her as she screamed often in her sleep and she wished she could do something against it. Unicorn magic could potentially be useful, but she rarely could will it to do as she entirely wanted. It did keep woods protected, animals hidden and her life everlasting, but she doubted its ability to remove curses.

At the border of Hagsgate she had noticed a significant change of the nearby area. The trees here were twisted, dry and spired into the sky, clinging onto life but not truly living. She felt a heave in her chest, but moved quickly to a ravine where she may enter without being seen. "This is the land of men?" She spoke softly. "I did not know how twisted it had become..."

Blinking, she looked back to her friend. "I will be careful, but losing me is less of a concern... gaining back the others should be just that." If a unicorn could frown, she would be doing so. Rather, her body had grown rigid and she moved ahead, eyes focused on the mist and decay ahead of her.

“If Haggard has almost of the unicorns in the world, then where does he keep them? The castle just doesn’t seem capable of holding all of them. They might be beneath the castle. The Red Bull might be there guarding them too. We should come around from the side or behind. I can smell the ocean. I wonder in what way Haggard has managed to suck away the sea’s majesty.” The vixen dreaded seeing the ocean near King Haggard’s castle. She imagined it to be void of life like the empty-hearted ruler. She crept through decayed land with her unicorn companion.

The cursed fox’s eyes glowed when finally beheld the sea. Amongst the shimmering sea foam and waves were unicorns. All of Haggard’s most precious treasures struggled and splashed along the shore. Far more than the vixen could count. “Why the sea? The mad fool… Why do they stay there? Is it a spell or something much worse?” She trembled as she felt a rumble in the sand. Her heart began pounding like a steady war drum. She didn’t have to turn her head to know what was coming towards them.

"Men are vain... if he wants to see them, it would not be somewhere indoors. Unicorns do not do well in cages." Or so she had heard, she continued to walk until she stopped at the mention, staring at the sea foam in a stunned silence. "...The fires must have caused them great fear." Slowly, she swung her nose towards the fox. "Our magic would not let us be killed in water, so it makes them float. They could step out at any time..."

Compassionate eyes looked back at them, but she turned back to the fox. "I feel that duty may separate us. The bull doesn't have eyes for foxes, you may have to retreat." Shining, her horn glittered and she stepped over the sand, bright green eyes glaring at the orange glow as it grew.

The Red Bull had awoken. Its burning glow spread across the shore as it moved towards the unicorn. It covered her tracks in the sand as it lumbered forward. Saliva dripped from its mouth like lava and its eerie eyes focused only on the unicorn. The vixen’s ears lowered and she stared at the blazing behemoth struck with awe and terror. “All of these unicorns didn’t stop the bull. How can you?”

The Red Bull charged forward. Its massive hooves thundered across the sand. It’s one goal was to herd this lone unicorn into the sea. The unicorn’s diminutive companion struggled to dart out of the hell creature’s path. It’s not fair. We’ve come this far, only to face an unstoppable force? What can I do? Nothing? I must try to at least distract the bull. He has no interest in me. He only wants her. This burning curse… I’d rather feel it forever than have to see her forced into the sea. The vixen made her futile attempt to distract the bull. She sprang up high towards the bull. She couldn’t even make contact with the Red Bull’s body. The sheer power radiating from it burned her and knocked her back onto the ground. In the briefest moment, she was paralyzed on the ground.
