Catherine loved the spirit of the season. Picking out gifts, wrapping them meticulously, bringing joy to others. It was all part of why she loved winter the most, it just evoked a sense of coming together ... well, that and cozy sweaters next to warm fires of course!

But now, she was stumped. She bit her lower lip as she read and reread the notes given to her for the secret gift exchange ... "will be extraordinarily pleased with anything you get him." She looked at the line in frustration and rubbed her temples. This was the worst type of recipient she could get! Cat loved, LOVED buying presents for people, but that was when she could pour her soul into getting them something they really wanted or needed, when she got suggestions like this, just "whatever you get me will make me happy" suggestions, it drove her nuts. Anything, wasn't really anything, people always had preferences! But when her sum interactions with a recipient were a one-off encounter back during the Alpine attacks and seeing him around the Prytaneum, she couldn't know what those preferences were.

So she took to frantically searching online, favoring sites where items produced were hand made, until she came across something that at least invoked a sense of what he was like from their one conversation. She clicked "Add to cart" before she could agonize over whether or not she was making a suitable choice, and it arrived just in time to be wrapped in festive perfection before she sought out her mark's dorm room.

She walked towards the Hermes dormitory with her boxed gift held snugly to her chest, she'd be damned if her present was in any way damaged. She wandered and asked about for the correct room number until she finally found the marked door. She placed the package on the doorstep with a tentative smile ... hopefully he'd like it.

Inside was a green canvas backpack. She'd purchased it hoping it would fit his dynamic life. It was customizable enough ... maybe he was someone who would cover it in quirky buttons, or maybe he was the type to collect patches representing the places he'd been and the journey that had taken him there. She wasn't sure, but she hoped the gift would suffice. She knocked gingerly on the door and then turned to depart, she didn't want to leave the gift sitting around, but also wasn't sure if she was supposed to let her recipient know she'd been the gift-giver.

Though he had first arrived at the Prytaneum with little more than the clothes on his back and a handful of personal items, Zan had cobbled together a respectable collection of clutter in the months since, everything from a half-used box of Monet band-aids to a set of Batman and Robin salt and pepper shakers. Each item was treasured, if only because it was his. With no trusted, permanent place to keep things before this, it seemed pointless to have them at all. The money he had made selling the random gifts he had received over the years had served him better anyway.

These days, when he made assurances that he'd be happy with anything, he truly meant them. Zan had a room now—obviously—and all of his treasures subsequently had a place to go. Like his newish monstrosity of a coat. And this, the greenest and most beautiful of backpacks he had ever owned.

Okay, fine. Maybe he hadn't actually owned a backpack of any variety since he'd been fifteen and had accidentally abandoned his at a party, and maybe all the ones prior to that had been emblazoned with Darth Vader or Raphael, so this one couldn't help being the best, but none of that held his excitement at bay. None of that had prevented him from coming up with about a million uses for this backpack, and it had only been sitting on his bed for ten minutes.

As near as he could tell, he'd been knocking around a practice dummy when his gift had arrived, the largest and shiniest box that had ever been addressed to him in his life. He had signed up for the Xenia gift exchange in the hope that it would get him out of his anti-social funk, and right now he had to admit that he was inching that way. Unfortunately, the longer he sat pondering the gift and who might have purchased it, the more he began to worry about what he was going to buy for his own mystery victim. He didn't know her at all, and even though she had been much more specific in her gift request than he had, he still had no idea what to buy. It almost left him feeling sorry for whoever had given him this backpack. Almost. They'd done a fine job, after all.

Zan picked it up off of the bed after eyeing it for another half a minute, stuck his hands in all of its pockets, then slung it across his back. For a stretch he considered what to do next, but it didn't take long to figure that out. He hopped to his feet and left his room on a mission, the empty bag still with him.
