████PERSONALITY
██████ ▻ Some have rumoured that the Joker is an extreme sociopath. Others argue that he is just a madman in a funky suit carrying a knife with a vendetta against all things good. Whatever your view is of the joker, it is most likely wrong. Rather than being simply insane the Joker is more obsessed with the idea of insanity. In his ideal world, he would be the maddest of them all, and in some ways, this is his goal. His entire demeanour is what we as members of society associate with insanity. The disregard for human life, trying to be witty and humorous in serious situations, his laughter and even his strange, flamboyant appearance. It is almost as though he has spent all these years trying to prove to everyone that he is what they already believe, insane. The joker's reasons for behaving in such a manner are not rooted in a past tragedy or event, this is just who he is. It is as though he wants to be so insane, he makes other people insane too. Insane with confusion. Insane with grief over those he has killed. Insane with worry that he might come for them. Of course, the joker only kills when it is most likely to cause a ruckus. He revels in the idea of playing the 'game'. He steals money not for personal gain but to piss off the person sat on top of it all. He feeds on the misfortune of others. The joker is a person forcibly lost of all scales of sanity but not due to any condition. Not bloodthirsty but an extreme egomaniac the Joker is not somebody to trifle with. He might blow up a children's home just to get his own back.

▌█ HISTORY
████ BACKSTORY
██████ ▻ One interpretation of The Joker's story is as follows, from facts put together during interrogations after arrest and from events preceding his first appearance. Most of the information below has been invented by the department to fill in the gaps for the satisfaction of readers. There is no clear evidence that links 'The Joker' to the red hood gang, the engineer nor to the orphan child (all of whom were and are real individuals). Although we cannot confirm this story as the truth, we hope you enjoy reading about one of Gotham's most notorious criminals.
To save his small but growing family from homelessness, The Joker – then a chemical engineer known informally as ‘Red Hood’- worked under the instruction of ‘The Red Hood gang’ whom had promised the thirty-year-old with a share of the profits they would receive from the robbery of ‘Monarch Playing Cards’. The Joker had been secretly working with them for a few months prior to this and was not aware that they wanted him for any specific task. He was merely a background soldier that received pennies from heists that kept his family alive. The gang were well aware that Red Hood had been, previously, a highly recommended chemical engineer at Ace Chemicals and thus knew the layout of the building well.
The gang needed him to lead the way silently through the Ace building to the playing card company next door which they intended to rob. To save him from distraction, they supposedly (or so the Joker believes) killed his pregnant wife so he would have no excuse to back out from the mission.
On the day of the robbery when the police informed the engineer that his wife had died in a freak road accident, the young man does just that and tries to pull out from the organisation so that he could look after his son whom was at school when his wife was killed. When his life is threatened, the engineer complies with their commands and goes through with the robbery. During the robbery however, the group were intercepted by batman whom killed most of those involved. And to the understanding of everyone after the news report was published, the engineer died also after being carelessly pushed head first into a giant vat of chemicals by the bat himself.
However, the engineer was not dead. He was far from it. The young man managed to escape the building where he ran and hid inside the abandoned fair ground which he believed would be safe for a while. With nowhere else to go, the creepy fair was better than prison.
He spent weeks in agony, his skin tingling and hurting so badly that he knew that something was seriously wrong yet he refused to go to the hospital out of fear of arrest. During these weeks of isolation, the engineer’s sanity slowly deteriorated and he became more and more obsessed with the prospect of killing the person whom had killed his wife. He didn’t know if anyone else had survived the robbery but if they had he would be the one to do it.
Still under the Alias of Red Hood – simply as he hadn’t plucked up the courage to remove the hood that covered his face – he ventured out during the night to find the culprit and kill them. In the fight he was badly injured despite winning in the end. The leader attacked him with a knife with which he tried to remove the mask with ‘accidently’ cutting into the engineer’s skin by his lips creating a scar line which made him look like he was constantly smirking, but only on one side of his face. He won the fight, but not without loss.
The engineer felt no better. In fact he felt empty. He returned to his hideout in the fair and finally removed his mask. To his horror his skin had been bleached white and his eyes had turned a sickly yellow colour. The engineer’s hair was a vibrant green colour which he absolutely detested. To balance out the scar on his cheek, it is believed that he cut the other side himself to make it appear like a wide grin. His cheeks were completely torn yet he didn’t mind the pain, in fact he was intrigued by it. He stitched the wounds himself where they healed slowly and painfully but not without permanent scarring. He couldn’t take his son back since they believed that the engineer was dead.
He spent much more time in isolation, just imagining what he would do to the batman if he ever encountered him again. In this time his sanity deteriorated even further and the engineer was no longer simply an engineer. At first he committed what he considered ‘small’ crimes such as theft or kidnapping. Simply to taunt the police. But his crimes gradually escalated. When the mysterious criminal was finally captured on CCTV he made the headlines of local Gotham newspapers. He was suspected of killing many and so he was placed on the high priority list got the GCPD. The Gotham Gazette nicknamed the strange criminal ‘The Joker’ after the playing card he now resembled. The Joker was pleased with this, and the name stuck.
He became infamous in Gotham for being one of the only super-villains without super powers. He organised his own heists and had companies wrapped around his little finger. He would threaten to blow up their houses, public transport or even hospitals if he didn’t get his way. He proved this when he blew up an old peoples home in Burnley when the Batman refused to meet him at Amusement Mile for a 'chat'.
The Joker has been a recurring resident of Arkham Asylum for the criminally insane, frequently re admitted after escape by Batman, the police or another hero. Since his last escape he has been rumoured to be forming alliance with other criminals. No-one knows why or when or what for. All the people of Gotham can do is hope that he is captured again before something awful happens. During his time at the Asylum, a young psychiatrist took a keen interest in him asking to spend more and more time questioning him in an attempt to discover what made him 'tick'. The Joker was infatuated by this young woman, and would only reveal hints about his past when he was speaking to her, and even then he spoke in riddles. "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice".
In their first meeting, the petite blonde introduced herself as Harleen Quinzel. He pointed out the irony of her name as it resembled a 'Harlequin' which is a kind of Jester, just like the Joker himself. Although he was intrigued by the girl, he also saw her obsession with him as a means of escape. He asked her for a favour in one of their meetings, where he sat bound in a straight jacket. "I need a machine gun," Is all he said before raising his eyebrow at her. He can recall how she was hesitant but eventually complied with his request. The Joker escaped leaving her behind but was immediately brought back several days letter, bloodied and bruised from a confrontation with Batman. In the following weeks they continued with their consultations. He would tell her stories of his childhood and his abusive parents (although he often told variations of the same story). However, Harleen became more and more attached to The Joker and again and again he used this to his advantage. When she was convicted for helping the Joker to escape, she was admitted to the Asylum herself many times. She pleaded that she was sane, however the court believed that the Joker had tainted her with his madness... if that were even possible. Of course, The Joker had tainted her. But with his words. He made her feel special and important to him, made her believe that she was the one that he loved.
Harley Quinn was eventually released from the Asylum leaving The Joker behind however it is believed that she aided his final release from the Asylum. They lived together for a time but the Joker was abusive and always maintained that she was below him and he was in some way 'superior'. He loved the way she obeyed him. It was like having a servant. In many ways he did love Harley, and he still made her feel as special as he had when they first met. He bought her expensive gifts and showered her in jewels yet he still abused the love she granted to him by physically and mentally scarring her. However the endearing charm she had presumably fallen in love with was all but gone - yet she still remained by his side.
