The winter season was one of Rosalyn's favorite times of the year because it was the time that all her family gathered in her grove. There was Bracken, who was with her year round, bless his heart and Rosario who came to visit every winter and summer, to check in on her and make sure that she wasn't lonely, but this year, there was another family member who had arrived.
Ambrose.
He had arrived before her son had, in the fall, even. At first, she hadn't recognized him. She hadn't seen him since they were foals together. She was confused when he knew her name and then she recalled his bronze colored scales, his noteworthy horn and she had shown scorn for the first time in years. Ambrose, her brother, had come to reconnect with her.
Ambrose had been the favored foal from their mother's scandal, carrying her traits while Rosalyn carried those of her father's. It didn't matter that she had unicorn and kirin blood in her veins, if she had no outer markings then she was to be exiled from the herd as soon as she could take care of herself. She had pledged that she would find a way to help Soquili and she did exactly that, exploring the craft of aromatherapy. She became friends with a nomadic healing herd that passed her way. She helped all varieties of Soquili who came through her grove and was happy in doing so.
Now her brother arrived so suddenly and all of her own repressed anger had come out into the opening in an embarrassing flood. All her hatred for her birth herd, scorn for her family, anguish at being left behind came out. And Ambrose? Well, most surprisingly, he just burst into tears.
It turned out that living within the herd as their golden child (literally) had its burdens too. He had been given the task of going out and recruiting others to return to his herd with and if no one could be recruited, then to breed with as many mares as possible and bring home the foals that shared their father's traits. Rosalyn had been disgusted to hear such news and demanded what her brother had done.
Apparently, he had run rampant with his new freedom. He found himself courting a mare with fierce claws for his first run around and a mare that could turn into a bear at the next. Rosalyn paled considerably in learning that her naive brother had flirted with certain death. He was ashamed of his actions, knowing that he couldn't go home with this news of his foolishness to the herd elders and so began looking for Rosalyn instead. He had been looking for seasons, he told her, tears in his eyes. He was sorry for not being able to help her in her youth and he understood if she wanted nothing to do with him any longer. Rosalyn, for all her anger, felt it melt away and invited him to stay through the winter so that they could catch up and he could meet her son, Ambrose replied that he would be delighted.

Ambrose was supposed to be perfect. He was supposed to be the one who had it all. He somehow had managed to be born with all of the traits that his herd valued. He had a unicorn horn, kirin scales and tail. He had the markings of his family. Everyone in his family, save for his father of course, had rose-themed names. His mother was Rosemary, his sister was Rosalyn and he was Ambrose. When his sister was popped from her basket without any of the herd's traits, her name became the only thing that connected her to the family.
The herd would forgive their mother once she pledged her life to creating purebred unicorns or uni-kirin hybrids, like Ambrose was born as. She could not handle the punishment that her regular born daughter had been dealt: exile. Despite the fact that the herd allowed Rosalyn to grow into young adulthood before kicking her out, she was still ostracized from the group. Ambrose, who played with her often as a foal, was no longer permitted to talk to her once they both grew. The elders forbade anyone to give her pity or warmth and even their mother chose to abide by these laws. She had already faced the wrath of the elders once.
Ignorant Ambrose did not realize his sister was being treated so harshly and did not understand why she fled the herd as soon as she could live on her own. Once she was gone, neither his mother nor anyone in the herd spoke of her again. She became a distant memory. Until he was released from the herd's grasp.
It wasn't his intention to screw up so badly. These mares he came across seemed so exotic! He had never seen a mare with claws before and the mare who wore a pelt around her back had fiery eyes and a necklace that glowed in the dark! Once he remembered what his coming out from the herd lands was to do, he felt ashamed. It was unlikely that any potential offspring from these mares would be welcomed in the herd. He did not want to repeat his mother's mistake and shame the herd with a regular foal... And it was then that he remembered his sister, Rosalyn.
So overcome with shame was he that he set out searching for her. He would ask any Soquili if they had seen others with markings like his. He met others with similar markings, but they were not family. He found trouble some places, dead ends in others until finally, three autumns later, he found himself staring at his sister as she tended to her flowers in her forest grove. His heart leapt into his throat as he struggled to speak to her, before calling her name. She turned and their eyes met, but she did not know him. And then she did and it broke his heart to hear what she had to say to him.
He could not defend himself. Only when she told him to drink some of the water she had in her irrigation system for the flowers did she allow him to tell his story. His sister, an empathetic gem of a pony, listened so carefully. He saw all sorts of emotion flash across her face, plain as day and when he had ended, she invited him to stay through the winter and meet her son. She had a son! Ambrose gave an empathic yes of reply and began to help her gather more food for the upcoming winter, fasted with her and her familiar, Bracken until the first snow came with the arrival of her son, Rosario.
It seemed that even with all of her fury for her family, she did not want to forget where she came from. Ambrose let out a sigh of relief, at least he was no longer completely cut off from her. If he had his way, he would never let it happen again, either.

Rosario was not as troubled as his mother nor his brother. In fact, in retrospect to either of them, he had had a grand childhood. His mother and father were there for the majority of when he was growing as a foal. Rosalyn taught him about flowers and aromatherapy. His father was there to teach him about the powers that his horn held within. Because healing was such an important part of his lineage (despite the fact that his mother wouldn't reveal the herd she came from until much later) he decided to travel from his mother's garden grove to find more ways to heal others and to excel in what he already knew. He wanted to continue to better himself and so he left his mother to travel with his father.
He returned every summer and winter to visit with her, which appeared to be solely needed, since it would seem as though his sister never visited their mother once she had left and his father was long gone. She had a familiar now, which was delightful, but Bracken wasn't the same as other Soquili, Rosario often suspected. Besides, it was nice to catch up with his mother, for she was very dear to him.
He had no idea the drama that had came with Ambrose's appearance and so when he walked into his mother's garden grove and saw her speaking fondly with a strange stallion, he wondered to himself on whether this was his mother's mate. You can imagine how awkward he felt when he found out that it was actually his uncle. The three then settled down and Rosario bombarded his poor uncle and mother with all sorts of questions. They had a herd? Well, not any more it seemed, but they were from one! That was pretty cool, even if it sounded like the herd was super horrible, the concept of a herd was rather fascinating in of itself.
He asked about what it was like to be a unicorn and a kirin and Ambrose admitted that he hadn't actually used his magical talents since he had left the herd. This was followed by an exclamation from both Rosario and his mother, who then instructed Rosario to begin training Ambrose back into the healing arts at once. They may no longer be a part of their family's herd, she said, but we must not ignore nor forget the gifts that we were given. For some reason or another, Rosario felt relief when he heard this.
He ended up beginning to show Ambrose how to use his horn again and then Rosalyn gave them both schooling on flower types, even though they were frozen through the winter. Soon enough, signs of spring began to pop up here and there and it was time for Rosario to set out once more. His mother was sad as ever to see him go, but Ambrose would be with her for a while yet, he was assured by his uncle. Knowing his mother wouldn't be alone this spring, he smiled at her and said that he would see her again in summer before setting off with a better perspective of his life and where he had come from.
