Thalia had been meaning to return to the Hot Springs for a while now. It had been one of the first destinations she had traveled to and was now one of her absolute favorites. While Thalia was not a vain pony, she did like looking good in the naive hope that when she met her golden angel again, that she would look her best for him.

It would be her familiar's first time in seeing the Hot Springs too, she had realized recently and she was excited to show it to him. The soothing waters seemed to make preening her wings that much easier, the warm water massaging out any aches or pains she gathered from her travel, especially from the icy temperatures of winter. Oh, it would truly be delightful to abandon the crispy air they tread through for the steamy pools.

The only problem was that she would have to climb a rather tall cliff and its path could get pretty narrow. Flying was hardly an option, if only because she wanted to work for her reward and flight was always so fun. Tulio was given the same boundaries and sat grumpily on her rump as she began her hike towards the bottom off the cliff. He would get over himself once he saw how wonderful the springs were, Thalia thought and so put his attitude out of her mind for the time being.

Obelus was a careful planner and she would put no other word on it. While some of a more offensive caliber may have called her cowardly (which would surely be their last word) she refused to consider the point and promptly chose the word cautious.

You see, Obelus didn't like confrontations with other Soquili where she didn't have the upper claw. If she felt threatened in any way, she would have to resort to transforming into her feral form and giving into a more murderous desire. She loathed giving over to that carnal force, but when she was cornered, what else could she do?

So, she did everying in her power to prevent from being pushed to that limit. She built traps around her lair, a cave within the mountain that held the Hot Springs atop it. The reason she chose such a place as her home was so to trap and kill the many that had to walk past her cave in order to begin the climb. Between her trip-ups and pit traps, broken legs, crippling sprains, and otherwise nasty injuries prevented her victims from escaping once they had been caught. She would be drawn by the sounds of whimpering and cries for help. She feasted on their pain and sometimes would toy with them for more than a season's span before devouring them.

That morning, the Skinwalker was restless. She paced back and forth in her cave, snarling. No one had come by this way in days and she tempted to release the beast within her and go parading into the plains herself, slaughtering any and all that got in her path. No, no, she must be patient. She would wait one more day and if no food arrived then she would release her true nature. She really ought to set up a sacrificial system so others would come as willing victims in order to save many lives for one. If only she was better at advertising...

As Thalia approached the cliff that held the path upon which, of course, led to the Hot Springs, she paused. Something was not quite right here. Her feathers were beginning to ruffle and she became quite tense. She thought she heard impatient snarls coming from behind her, but that could have easily been the winter wind. The chills could have been the cold. She proceeded cautiously, ready to take a running leap into the air and into safety at a moment's notice.

"Oh? And why is it that you are allowed to fly and I am not?" Inquired Tulio haughtily as he noticed her wings beginning to unfold. With a huff, he took to the sky and sailed up on a chilled breeze that made his feathers ruffle. Thalia, suddenly tired of her "work hard to get there" attitude, decided she ought to do the same and rank straight forward with increasing speed to prepare for her leap into the sky's comforting hold.

Only to fall into a deep pit with a sharp cry of alarm. She lay still on her side, flanks heaving as she tried to regain the breath that had been knocked from her. Then, with effort, she got to her hooves and swayed.

"Tulio!" She called up from the bottom of the hole. "Tulio, I'm not sure how to get out!" She stopped shouting as soon as she realized that the looking danger she felt was coming closer and she shrank to the back of her pit, glancing this way and they for some way to hide or miraculously escape. Something was coming, something so bad every fiber in her being told her to get out of there, fast.

Just when she was beginning to lose her patience and nearly moments away from giving into feral lust, Obelus heard a scream. Her ears perked up and her eyes burned brighter than ever before. The malicious intent in her grew and the beast-mare grinned a truly frightening grin. Then, her gaze narrowed and she began to proceed through the forest, her focus on the noise of the poor soul that had finally fallen into one of her traps.

Her victim was a mare, she realized as she got closer and the other she was calling to... Another equine? A familiar perhaps? She paused at the notion, her feral form calling out to her waking mind, demanding to be freed so they might feast and not worry about any such threats. But no, no, Obelus pressed on, her mind working to devise all manner of delightful schemes. Would this mare become a victim? Naturally. But would she become a pet? A plaything? Or a simple meal? Obelus was hungry, but this creature had fallen into one of her pits... It would be a shame to waste them.

Eventually, she came to the pit the creature was in and she leaned over the edge of the hole. Immediately, the two locked eyes and Obelus grinned, her eyes shining with anticipation through their green flames. The creature beneath was a pretty thing, with a lavender and violet coat and cream and bright blue accents in her wings and hair. She wore a purple bow in her hair. She looked fragile. A wind and a ceryeni, perhaps? Obelus' eyes narrowed again and then she relaxed her features.

"Oh, my dear feathered friend." Her voice was coated with fake kindness and sympathy. "It looks as though you have fallen into one of my traps. That's certainly what it is, birdie, I'm not going to sugarcoat it. You have fallen into a trap, which is impossible to get out of with hooves, anyway..." Obelus sized up the large wings of the other and sniffed, "Though... We might have to do something about those wings of yours. Wouldn't want you flying off on me, now would you?" In order to do what she liked, she would need to relinquish her form to her feral form, but she needed to be present as she could to make sure that the mare was harmed and brokened, but not killed. It seemed Obelus would have to retain some of her power, even in her other form. She had not yet done that before. It was always two minds and two bodies... This would be interesting.

She transformed as she leaped into the hole with the other mare. Luckily for the beast-bear, the mare was small enough that they could both fit reasonably well in the hole. Then the fun started. Feathers were torn, the mare screamed and her screams sounded like music to Obelus' ears.
"Pretty songbird." Obelus-the-beast cooed. "That's what you'll be. You'll be my songbird and sing for me forever more." The biggest hassle was getting out of the hole, but with her claws and natural climbing ability, Obelus did it and heaved herself back up. The mare beneath was sobbing and trying to flex her wings, which had been plucked considerably. "Now you can stay, songbird. I must go and eat, but when I return, you shall sing for me, properly, this time. You will not like what I shall do to you if you do not obey." And so Obelus as the beast lumbered off in search of a better meal, content with her multitasking and the prospect of her new pet.

Thalia looked up in horror at the green fire that looked down at her. It was hard to see anything past that, but her mind was able to retain the shape of a mare, wearing a black bear's pelt and smiling down at her. The fire kept her eyes and she froze. She didn't understand why she could not move, entranced by the other that spoke to her in tones of sickening kindness.

Then the mare transformed and leaped at her, claws pulling and tearing and the pain, the pain, the pain...! And then it was over and the beast-mare was crawling out of the hole and then leaving with the promise that she would return. Thalia couldn't move from where she must have fallen. From her mind's eye, she could see herself--or maybe she was dead? Yes, she must have died, for she was looking down at herself and oh god, her wings.

With a choked sob, she was back in her own body and she stretched her wings to see them. Once beautiful, they were now pitiful things, with patches of bare skin showing through. Her entire coat was spotted with her blood and she was getting very dizzy and sick to her stomach very quickly.

"No, no, no!" Came the shrill cry of a familiar voice. Raising her head, she saw Tulio flying down into her hole. She shivered as he approached and closed her eyes. Just leave her to die, she would surely be finished off as soon as that dreadful monster returned. "What has did that vile thing do to you? Oh, your wings! Thalia, your wings!" He cried and pressed his beak to Thalia's cheek and she flinched. She couldn't understand why this was happening to her. What had she done to receive such brutal punishment? Which god had she offended? Where was her golden guardian angel now?

"Worry not, my love, I will find a way to rescue you, but in the meantime, you must stay strong." Her familiar was chattering on, hopping back and forth anxiously. Thalia hated him for it. Hated his perfect wings when she had been reduced to this state in a matter of minutes. "But should I stay here and watch out for you, or should I go seek help? Oh Thalia, I wish you would speak. You know, this is a horrible situation and we need to work together, lovie." Thalia snorted and turned her head away from the parrot, who paused for a moment and then launched into a new speech entirely, this one focusing on how: "Yes, yes, very good. You need your strength in order to face against her. Fear not, lovie, I know you'll be alright, just alright in the end. We'll get through this somehow..." And so on. The mare curled her legs towards her and shuddered again, while her familiar blabbered on about her needing to take rest and then find a way out of here. She couldn't bare the thought of escaping with her wings in such a mess. If she couldn't fly and she certainly couldn't climb from this hole... How on earth was she to escape? Right now, her body demanded rest and maybe when she woke up, this would all turn out to be some horrible dream.

Obelus had taken her time wandering away from her pretty songbird. She was certain that she wouldn't be able to escape any time soon and she was equally certain that she would have a delightful time toying with her. Her wings were just the start. She could hobble her, if she wanted. Break her fragile-looking legs and watch the bone splinter through her teeth. She could imagine all manner of foul thing to do to the innocent creature.

Innocent no more, Obelus thought with glee. Never again, either.

No, she would mar the mare in her trap until there was nothing left of the young, spirited thing that had waltzed into her territory. She had so many wonderful ideas for the mare, but now... Now was not yet the time for that. Now was the time to hunt and hunt, Obelus would.

She shifted to hunt, the beast within her bursting out in the flash of pain that came with transforming. It felt as though all of her bones had shattered and reformed in a matter of seconds. One of the cons about her ability to shift, she had thought once. A grim reminder of the things she had sacrificed in order to become what she was today.

The beast did not care about the pain. The pain was a natural part to being released and the beast was ready to launch itself upon the world. It raged and rampaged, it hunted and devoured. It was ready to return back to its cave, to shift and let the other take over, when its other half spoke about not yet desiring to be in the cave. The beast shrugged its hulking shoulders and snarled, but it shifted and so Obelus returned.

Obelus was now covered in blood. Her fur was matted and the red liquid seeped from her jaws. She was quite full and she took her time in returning to the hole where she had left the mare. She eventually approached and saw a flutter of wings take off from the hole. Narrowing her eyes, she searched the trees around her and saw a flash of blue and white. A familiar, no doubt. A familiar that was stupidly loyal to this mare, else it would have flown off to get help.

Obelus was certain she could use that in her favor somehow, but for the time being, she simply approached the hole again and peered down at the mare.
"It occurs to me that my songbird may get hungry. I know I eat your kind, but what is it that you eat, my dear?" She asked with a grin, the blood from her various kills dripping off her muzzle and into the pit fall with the mare.
