It had taken him a while to figure out what to get his ... target? Target was a good word. Now Mal loped to the Athena dorm and went hunting with the gift in his coat pocket. It was small, it was kinda cute, and it was (possibly) useful.

What more could anyone ask for in a gift, anyway? Mal figured cute and possibly useful and not a living creature (there had been one dreadful year when people had insisted on giving him plants, he still had terrible flashbacks from it) was about as good as it got.

Plus if Zebulon didn't like it, Mal would never know because it could be stuffed in a drawer and left there, none the wiser. All around a good choice.

"Zeb?" He said it cautiously as he checked doors; did Athena dorms label their rooms?

The Athena dorms were quiet, which was nice. Almost a bit too quiet, honestly, which is why Zebulon had already taken the effort to buy some cloth door stops to place underneath the entire door. They were meant to block chill, mostly, but they were good for muffling sound too.

Didn't need everyone in the hall hearing him--

The relative quiet made it fairly easy for him to catch when someone was coming by, though, or perhaps that was just experience from living in dorms or cabins more than once in his life. Therefore, it wasn't like he didn't notice one of the other Chosen calling his name--especially considering it wasn't a voice he didn't normally hear in the Athena dorms.

Zebulon grumbled under his breath, narrowing his eyes at Diryas as he asked, "Can't I just ignore that?"

The near deadpan expression he got in turn, only interrupted by a slow blink, told him all he needed to know, and Zebulon grumbled all the way over to the door.

The moment he got to the door, that all stopped. Zebulon's back went razor straight. He swept his hand through his hair, once, twice, making it look at the very least presentable. And then he swung open the his door with an almost smarmy grin on his face. "Yes? Someone looking for me?"

"Certainly am." Mal smiled at him. Now he had a face to go with the name. "Just bringing you this." He pulled the package out of his pocket; it was small, no bigger than a deck of cards, and wrapped in cream colored paper with green foil pinstripes. "I don't think it's happy Xenia, but I hope you like it."

'It', once unwrapped, was a small, glowing pendant on a black cord. It was about the size of a gold dollar coin.

Mal had put his hands back in his pockets and he watched Zeb's face as he unwrapped it. He was smiling, like nothing bothered him, or could bother him; like he wouldn't care if Zeb said he hated it.

Honestly, if Zebulon hated it, he likely wouldn't make that terribly clear either.

Why let on his motivations? Besides, no point in offending the other Chosen. Didn't serve much use--

The grin seemed frozen on his face, almost like it was drawn on there, though he tilted his head when the package was pulled out of his pocket. It was definitely small. At a box that small, his first thought was revealed by the grin narrowing into a smirk, "You getting me some jewelry?" His tone was almost obnoxiously sing-song. "You shouldn't have."

He clearly didn't mean that literally, or at least he wasn't likely to reject a gift, as he took the box anyway and casually opened it on the spot. He was admittedly amused to find himself correct on the designation of "jewelry," though he admitted he hadn't seen a glowing pendant like this one before. At least, not in person. It looked like it came from one of those 80's sci-fi movies...

His expression didn't change all that much, giving very little obvious note as to how he felt about it. He seemed interested enough in it, though, at least trying to peek in-between the pieces of the pendant to see what was actually making it glow. He suspected there was probably a battery hooked up to a LED light somewhere inside, perhaps a watch battery, though the LED would have to be a fairly small one to fit inside the disc--

"Definitely nothing I've gotten before," offered Zebulon, with a laugh, lowering the pendant. His smirk was still ever-present. "Thanks for the jewelry!"

"I am," he replied calmly, like there was no point in denying it. He watched Zeb lift the pendant and look at it, because he knew what the next question was.

After all, it had been his own next question, too.

"It's lit by two tritium vials. No batteries and it should stay live for you for about ten years on the low side." Mal liked the implied joke in the tritium; the stuff wasn't dangerous, but someone ignorant might think it was.

He figured Zeb wouldn't mind. "I went with the blue, but you could theoretically replace them with any color you wanted. I put the information in the box, under the cushion." For a reputable tritium dealer, because it was dealing, apparently, since the substance was illegal in some places.

"Oh!" Zebulon's eyes lit up when Malcolm said tritium, finally showing something of an actual not-smirky reaction. Of course. That made sense. No need for watch batteries and no need to squeeze LEDs into the pendant. Plus, tritium was radioactive. Zebulon enjoyed radioactivity. It was one of the (many) parts of chemistry he found fascinating.

Probably because it was dangerous. He seemed to have a thing for dangerous chemistry, considering his field and focus of study.

So long as it wasn't personally affecting his own health, anyway.

The smirk was back soon enough, and Zebulon was idly flicking the pendant around with his fingers. "Noted. I'll make sure not to mistake the vials for some sort of drink flavoring."

Mal grinned at Zeb's Oh! and the way his eyes lit up. Even when he covered it, Mal had seen it. He offered Zeb a hand to shake, because why not?

"Good. I'd hate to see you start glowing, or suddenly sprouting a third eye or another set of arms. That's the last thing we need around here."

Zebulon snorted. That wasn't really how radiation worked, at least not in the already living and adult, but the obsessive scientist in him was thankfully outweighed by the side that could take a joke.

"You sure the gods can't just do that anyway?" His smirk grew more severe. "There's already one that can turn us into animals."

As he said that, he nearly smacked his hand into Malcolm's and shook it rather firmly, before letting go. It was a domineering handshake, for sure, short, firm, and forceful.

And then he spun the pendant around again, watching as the light danced.
