Quote:
Advertised around town on available bulletins, a caroling group has been requesting volunteers to join them. There doesn't seem to be any catches--it's just a fun little opportunity to spread some Holiday cheer while making some new friends! Of course, you don't have to if you don't want to--maybe, instead, you're the sort to chase carolers off your doorstep?

Aurora Willows was a volunteer champion as far as she was concerned and when she found the flyer looking for some carolling volunteers, well she was on it. Of course she couldn't just sign herself up, she had to drag someone along with her in case she decided that she couldn't stand the other carolers for whatever reason.

It had taken her a while to decide whom she wanted to accompany her.

Her first thought had been Pasi, but she decided against that almost immediately with the knowledge that finals were upon them both and besides, she was bothering him enough about silly things like help with her homework. Or when she was lonely because Bob was roaming the neighborhood and her dad was working late.

In the end, it occurred to her that if she asked Axton to go with her, then he'd probably say yes. So she did and was delighted when he agreed, without much of a fight either.

So when they'd gathered at the designated meeting place, with Rory bundled up in at least four layers, she clutched a snow themed treat bag tightly in her hands near her chest. Spotting him among a crowd of mostly unfamiliar faces she hurried over. "Axton!" She chirped, shoving the bag forward at him.

He really wasn't sure how he'd let this happen. One moment he was answering his phone, and the next he knew, he was agreeing to go caroling. That so wasn't his scene. So how in the hell had Rory managed to talk him into it?

He blamed her age, the pseudo sibling-like interest in her well being he'd walked away from that damn music festival with. He hadn't even liked her much before the s**t had hit the fan, so how exactly had annoyance elevated to a brotherly desire to keep her safe. Axton didn't ******** know, but it had, and now he found himself wrapped around her dainty little pinkie.

But it wasn't as if he could just let her go alone. What if something happened to her?

So here he was, hands in his pockets, breath fogging slightly in the early December chill, waiting. Not for long, at least. He heard her shout his name, saw her rushing towards him through the thin crowd so she could thrust a bag into his hands. "Oh, hey." He blinked down at her, then at the package. "What's this?"

For one reason or another, Rory seemed to always have lucky when it came to convincing men like Axton, or Pasi, to do what she wanted. It was impossible to pinpoint where the shift in their relationship was, though it was so clearly tied up in the time spent at the festival, but the teen wasn't going to overthink it.

What mattered was that she had asked and Axton had said yes, which was great because she could tell that she'd been pushing it with Pasi lately.

"It's for you." She said, shaking her head and rolling her eyes like that was obvious. "Just a thank you for coming." And for the festival, but she was also working on a better gift, she just needed to figure out what to get. "I hope you're not allergic to chocolate. Or one of those weird people who work out all the time and refuse to eat anything that's not on their approved diet because I worked really hard on those and if you don't eat them I'm going to cry."

That last part wasn't true, but she said it like she would.

"Come on," she urged, reaching for his hand so she could tug him closer to the rest of the volunteers. "I think we're gonna start soon."

Lips pursed, Axton looked down at the bag in his hands, then back up at Rory as she rolled her eyes at him. "Mmhmm." Well yes, that had been obvious, but that also hadn't been what he'd asked. However, that was answered a moment later, and he gave a small 'ah' of comprehension as she mentioned allergens and diets. "No, neither." In fact, he had a bit of a sweet tooth.

"Thank you," he chuckled. "I'm sure they're delicious, and I'd put money on them not lasting past the weekend." Or that evening, if he were being really honest.

She grabbed for one of his hands, drag him along with her towards the other volunteers, and he tried not to sigh audibly. This so wasn't his scene, but there really wasn't much he could do about it now, beside playing along. So that was what he'd do.

And it wasn't as if he didn't know the lyrics to a good number of Christmas carols. He hadn't gone out of his way to learn them, but he'd had twenty plus years of hearing them on the radio every winter.

At least he got snacks out of the deal.

"Good, because they are," she asserted, nodding her head like it was undeniably true. She was a half-decent baker when she put her mind to it and that was what was important to her.

His hand was much bigger than hers, which seemed strange and silly, but she fixated on it while she marched over to the others. Rory let go to reach for the offered sheet music, flipping through the pages and then offered a set to Axton.

"After," she said as thought it was an afterthought, "we should get hot chocolate. It's supposed to get really cold tonight." Which was why she'd bundled in so many layers.

The gathered volunteers began to walk forward, a tall man in front leading them.

They were starting with I Wish You A Merry Chirstmas

"After?" It wasn't enough that he'd agreed to go caroling, now she wanted hot chocolate, too? She wasn't demanding at all. He'd planned on going back home after the singing was over, but he didn't seem able to say that. Instead he found himself heaving a small sigh in defeat, before answering. "Fine. Hot cocoa it is." He wasn't going to let her wander around the city at night, by herself. It wasn't safe.

He took a copy of the music, flipping through the pages as he handed the stack along to the next volunteer. It was all familiar. Familiar enough that he really didn't need the lyrics, but he held onto them anyways, just in case.

"So are we just wandering around the city streets and singing? Or is there a destination in mind, like assisted living, or something?"

Rory blinked, turquoise eyes looking up at Axton in a pleading manner when she quietly said, "please?" Though it seemed unneccesary because he agreed shortly after and she bounced in place, even squealed in delight. "Thank you!" She definitely hugged him after. "You're the best!"

If she complimented him enough, then it'd seem like he was doing her a big favor and might be inclined to feel good about it. Besides, she genuinely liked Axton.

"I think we're going around the shopping district actually? Apparently door to door didn't work out so well last time." She made a face, sticking her tongue out at the idea. "Think it'll take about...an hour or so?" Maybe longer, if they got stopped or something.

She looked over her own sheet music, then tucked it into the messenger bag at her side. Holding her hand out to him, she looked at him expectantly.

Apparently Rory was a hand-holder.

This had to be what it was like to have a system, had to, because that same obligatory need to protect he felt with his brother was there, but also an unexpected inclination to keep her happy. Puppy eyes and pouting to required. He'd only just met Rory, and already the girl had him practically wrapped around her little finger.

He sighed ove dramatically, but took her hand anyway. "So an hour, hour and a half max, and then off for hot chocolate."

He frowned thoughtfully. "Don't you have a curfew or something?" It actually wasn't that late, but it felt like it was. It always did in the winter. The sun set way too damn early.

Good for patrolling, actually, but not fur much else.

Rory was an only child, luckily or her dad would probably have a heart attack, but she'd managed to pick up some big brother-like figures and it was...nice. She liked the fact that both men seemed to begrudgingly care, very much, about her because she liked them and it was nice to know that if she called, they would probably meet her.

"Um, technically I think curfew is at 11, but pops is working overnights, so he won't be home." If she'd been talking to someone besides Axton, or Pasi, or even August, she wouldn't have disclosed that but to her it didn't seem like a big deal.

"'Sides, pops knows I'm volunteering, so it's fine." Carefully, Rory slid her small fingers between Axton's larger ones and tugged him along with her.

"So no chance of an over protective dad getting the wrong idea and calling the cops?" It was a joke, mostly. Ax knew there was nothing suspect about his friendship with Rory, but people as a whole were not usually that smart, and he couldn't say it wasn't a minor concern of his.

Their group was on the move, and Ax shook off the teen's hand, but only so he could lay an arm around her shoulders. "Looks like we're about to start." The sheet music was rustling as the people all around them began lifting it to read.

"You're good people," Rory said firmly, looking up at Axton like he was ridiculous for even suggesting such a thing. "He has no reason to get the wrong idea." She spoke in matter-of-fact, no-arguments tone. Seemingly satisfied with her own answer Rory nodded at Axton, pulling him along with her as they joined their fellow volunteers.

It wasn't going to be particularly exciting, especially since Rory was a subpar singer to begin with, but she had someone she felt comfortable with by her side and she was getting hot chocolate after.

It was win-win for her.
