Quote:
Destiny City has had a few experiences with snow so far, but no one can argue that this most recent snow is the best for building snowmen. It's on a weekend, and the weather is just perfect. Many have dubbed today the city's unofficial 'Build a Snowman Day'. Snowman, snow sculpture, snow angel--whatever you want to make, have fun with it! Young or old, take some time to appreciate the little things and connect with some good old, basic, winter fun!

Rana woke up to find the city covered in a fluffy whiteness. The weather report had predicted the snowfall, but the question had been how much. Once she saw the thick layer on her windowsill, she grinned and rushed to check the school website. Sure enough, all schools had been closed for the day. Snow day!

She considered spending the day curled up inside with cocoa and video games. But when she looked out the window to survey the neighborhood, she found there were already kids out there building forts or snowmen. So it looked like the snow was the wet kind that packed together well. Good for building, or snowballs. She could have some fun with that. So after a leisurely breakfast, she bundled up warm, grabbed a thick pair of gloves and headed to a nearby park.

There weren't too many people out yet, but those that were seemed mostly to be building stuff out of snow. Rana scooped up a large handful of it herself, and found it stuck together perfectly. Really, this stuff just begged to be sculpted into something. She smiled and dropped her ball into the snow, then started rolling it around to make a bigger ball. She wasn't sure what she was making yet, whether it would be a classic snowman or something else, but a big ball of snow was a good place to start.

This would be Jason's first real snowfall. Sure, they had gotten some snow in California, but when he had gone to sleep last night he hadn't expected this much! He had only seen this kind of snow on mountains and such, not in the city where he was from. Luckily he had gone out and bought some good winter clothes before the cold had really set in, so he was ready for this.

He sat in his dorm looking at the snow through the window for a bit. He couldn't believe how clean everything looked being covered in a layer of white. It was quite amazing to him. It had been announced that classes were cancelled for the day and debated with himself as to whether he should really go outside. He eventually decided to go out and check out what he could do.

After he had been out and trudging through the snow a bit he saw a group of kids outside building snowmen. Well, he hadn't ever done that before... it would be a good time to try it then. He wasn't quite sure how to make one though and spotted a girl just starting to make hers and wandered over, hoping not to scare her. He wasn't quite sure how to approach her, so he went with an old fashioned greeting. "Hello." He waited for her to turn to him. "Um... this is kind of embarrassing... but I'm not really sure how to make a snowman. Could I watch you for a bit to figure it out?" There, he asked it, the most embarrassing part was over.

Rana was rolling her snowball along the ground, thinking it was starting to get big, when someone wandered over and said hello. She glanced up at him, saw he wasn't anyone she recognized, and answered "Hey," ready to get back to her work. But he had more to say. She sat back on her heels and looked up at him.

"What, you're never made a snowman?" she said, a little incredulous. Even if he hadn't, plenty of picture books and kid's TV shows and stuff showed kids making one. Did this guy live under a rock or something? Still, she pointed out the basics. "It's not hard. Just pile up snow in a vaguely human shape. If you want to get traditional, made three large balls of snow and pile them on each other. Here." She scooped up a big double-handful of snow, packed it quickly together into a ball, then plopped it on top of her first ball. Then she gathered together a smaller ball and added it to the stack.

"That's the basic idea," she said, indicating the shaped pile of snow. "Then decorate it with sticks and rocks and whatever else you got." She backed up a couple steps to examine her creation critically, then commented, "Eh, I want a bigger one." So she scooted back to its side, squished the smaller balls into the bigger one, then kept rolling.

Jason shrugged a bit at her question. He couldn't help it, he hadn't thought to look up how to build one on the internet before coming out. But he watched her explain it to him. It was a lot like building a sandcastle, except the building material was all water instead of a combination of sand and water. "All right. I think I got it then, thanks." He said as he moved away from her a bit to build his own snowman.

He wasn't sure how big he wanted to make it, or if he wanted to make a snowman exactly, but he started with a big mound of snow. Looking back at the girl's he decided to make it a bit larger. Then he wondered what he could really do with it and decided to make it a large snorlax, if possible. He was still new to using snow to build stuff so making the feet and claws would probably be hard, but not impossible.

And so he started to pile up as much snow as he could, almost into a pile up to his shoulders for the stomach part.

Snorlax ref just in case and tell me if you want me to move him in a different direction snowman-building wise.

Rana dimly noticed the guy wandering off to build his own thing, but she kept her focus on her own growing collection of snow. She still wasn't sure what she wanted to build, but the basis for anything was a big hunk of snow, so she kept rolling. She packed in the sides as she went to help it roll easier, but in general the snow didn't need a lot of help to stick together.

When the ball started to get too big to roll easily, she stopped and looked around. The guy was still nearby, and gathering up his own mound of snow. His pile seemed to be pretty big already, and getting steadily bigger. Rana raised her eyebrows incredulously at the sight. How big was he planning to make his snowman? "Geeze, that's a lot of snow. Are you trying for a snow sumo wrestler or something?" she called over to him.

This works!

Jason could feel his face freezing a bit but it wasn't too bad, the cold was good at keeping him awake at least. He could feel his throat hurting a bit as he breathed in the cold air. He would just have to go back to his dorm and get a hot chocolate or something. But it wasn't as cold as he thought it would have been with the snow. It seemed that it felt colder outside when it was just the cold wind blowing on him.

He looked over to the girl when she commented on his pile and smiled a bit. After laughing he continued to work on his pile but said, "Sort of, it's going to be a snorlax actually. And since they're pretty... big, I need to get lots of snow for the stomach part." He tried to make sure he wasn't getting any snow from her area and started rolling some snow to make the head and feet of the snow pokemon. He looked over at her pile. "What are you going to make, if I may ask?"

A Snorlax? What was that supposed to..."Oh, that's a pokemon, right?" she asked, kind of remembering something about it. She hadn't really gotten into the whole pokemon thing, but after the phone game was hugely popular over the summer, it was kind of hard not to learn something about it. So apparently a Snorlax was something big, huh?

At his question, she looked back at her own snow ball. She didn't really have an idea of what she wanted to make yet, but if he was going big..."Well, maybe I'll make a snow sumo wrestler, then!" Go big or go home, right? She considered the shape of a sumo wrestler, then decided her ball wasn't big enough yet. Since it wasn't easy to roll any more, she gathered up handfuls of snow and started packing it around the sides to build it up. While she worked, she planned the rest of the build. The classic 3-ball shape didn't seen to fit this idea, so maybe make one small ball for a head, then sculpt the arms and legs onto the body. That would also be easier than trying to haul two more balls of snow on top of the big one.

Rambling's fine! Sometimes a post needs padding. smile

Jason nodded, gathering up some more snow. “Yeah, it’s a really big and fat bear pokemon. Usually sleeps a lot.” He said as he finally figured he had enough snow to start shaping the stomach. “A sumo wrestler sounds good! That would be funny to see as a snowman.” He replied, chuckling a bit. “Can’t wait to see the final product.”

He worked on his own sculpture for a bit, shaping the stomach a bit more. It was a bit hard to make the snow more compact, but he went a little at a time, adding harder balls of snow to the stomach and shaping them as much as he could into the stomach form. He would have to do the same for the head, though that would be easier since it was smaller.

"A fat bear pokemon? What, like a giant teddy bear?" she asked. That sounded pretty easy to make out of snow. But she bet she could make her snow sumo wrestler look better than his snow pokemon!

She took a step back from her giant snow ball and considered its shape. If she wanted this to be the best snow sumo guy, she'd want to get the shape of the body right. A sumo wrestler was, like, a really fat guy, right? With those one of those loincloth things. She looked down at her own torso for ideas, decided the front and back should be flattened a bit more, and started packing the snow a little tighter there, scraping some off when it wouldn't pack right. Then she started to shape the shoulders a little, getting it ready for the head.

“Yeah sort of, you could make a nice big plushie out of it though.” Jason replied, looking over at her Sumo wrestler. He noticed her making it a bit bigger than his Snorlax snowman and decided he would add a bit more to the stomach. Luckily though he was almost done with it. He was glad he was almost done though, he was starting to get hungry.

After he had added more snow to the stomach area he concentrated on making the little spikes on the feet and hands, making sure that they couldn’t easily fall over. Though if anyone came by and decided to kick them, well there was no hope of their survival at that point. He was glad though that he had been able to do this. Even if he wasn’t staying out that long, it was interesting working with the snow to build something out of it. I’m pretty sure I still prefer sand though.

All right I'm past 500 words if we want to end this soon?

Rana rolled a ball for the head and stretched up to put it on the shoulders on her sumo wrestler. She had to pack a little bit of loose snow around the neck area to help it stay in place, but she got it steady soon enough. She stepped back to see how it looked overall, and immediately realized it would have been easier to do the face details before putting the head on the body. She scowled, annoyed that she hadn't thought of that earlier, but figured at this point it'd just be more work to take it down, do the face, and then re-position it.

She huffed at herself, then decided to pause for a minute and turned to look at the other guy's snow pokemon. If his sculpture was accurate, it did loot like it's make a good plushie. "Oh yeah," she said in agreement. "Or maybe a giant bean bag chair. Looks like it'd be fun to flop on."

SSBrosB
Sure, I'm fine with ending it any time.

“Right? I sort of wish they made them in real life.” Jason replied, chuckling a bit. His sculpture was finished though, he couldn’t really do anything with it unless he wanted to make a scarf for it or something. Either way, he was done. Looking at his watch he realized how late into the day it was already and realized that he should probably head back to his dorms.

“Whoops, looks like I have to go! It was nice uh… sculpting with you!” He said, smiling a bit before dusting the snow off of him. “Thanks again for telling me how to work with this stuff, it really helped. And uh… if we ever meet again, I’m Jason.” He told her. After giving her enough time to respond, he headed off back towards his dorm, his stomach growling for some food.

"I'm Rana," she replied simply, waving as Jason headed off. She glanced at her watch too. She had been out longer than she expected, and she was getting kind of cold, but she wasn't done with her snowman yet. And if he could finish his, she could finish hers! She...might speed up the process a little, though. Go for a little less detail, perhaps. She rubbed her chilled hands together a moment for warmth, then started carving groves in the sides to suggest arms.
