Winter Solstice Celebrations!

User Image

The prizes above were all done by Embi! The first is a baphomet stone, and the poinsettia kiddos are both elves!

Opens: December 1st
Closes: December 31st, 11:59 PM MST

It's that time of year again. Winter Solstice means Gift Giving day is fast approaching. So many new races have been popping up in Below. It has been an exhilarating time, and the new holiday customs being showcased this year has everybody buzzing. As always, the academy has thrown a giant festival, complete with booths, lavish decorations, food, and music. The universities have been invited, as always, and Nightmares can be found escorting their new friends around their new homes. What about your Nightmare? Are they excited for the recent changes in history?

            *The stone is an Bapho!

            How to play:
            • Every day you are allowed to roll for each of your Nightmares to receive a prize! You also can end up with a familiar, if you're lucky. However, you must RP your character receiving their prize, or doing something in the festival when you roll. It's suggested that while you can roll for every Nightmare you have, you only roll for the amount of responses you can handle! You can keep rolls in one post, or in individual posts.
            • Roll a 20-sided die per Nightmare you're including in the ORP! You may grab a trinket (one per Nightmare each day) by default, but if you roll a number ending in 3, 6, or 9 you may also grab a plushie. If you roll a number ending in 5 you may grab a familiar!
            • There are 3 grand prizes to be given away. This time around, it's a stone and two freshlings. At the end of each prize time frame, the winner will be announced after totals are tallied, and the next round will begin! You may only count 1 roll towards your point total per day (meaning you can use your highest roll for that day towards your point total!).
            • You must label in your posts how many points you have. If you don't you will not be counted for the grand prize.
            • Do not delete posts. We will disqualify you from the chance to win the Nightmare's if you do!
            • You may RP quests! If you lack a Nightmare you are allowed to RP an approved quest within this game! If you have more then one quest, you are permitted three quests to play in this game.
            • You are encouraged to create creative situations of your character receiving a prize!
            • Characters may trade prizes without losing points!
            • Only take one prize per each roll!

She didn't go quite as overboard with the cat plushies, but she did order a good variety.

            User ImageUser Image
Someone put a Salamander in the punch bowl. They will pay for that...

            User ImageUser Image

            User ImageUser Image
Awww! These Fennekits are trying to sing along with the Solstice songs!

            User ImageUser ImageUser Image
I'll be honest with you, I thought these Skyfish were tree decorations at first.

User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image
Welp, the Fey finally brought the Fluffbugs to the event! Now the question is... can you catch one?

Mango was helping out by setting up decorations for the Winter Solstice Celebrations. Though he cant lift heavy stuff, he was trusted to make the place look nice due to his tendency to make sure everything looked picture perfect (which he was ready to start taking photos before everyone else arrived).

He was placing some plants on the windowsill to give some green to compare to the winter landscape outside, when he saw something in the dusty corner of the room. "Huh?" he said as he picked up the thing, setting off a cloud of dust.

Mango sneezed and cough and as soon as the dust settled he saw the plushie. "What is this?"

It seemed to be an abandon plushie and by the looks of it, it has been there for quiet awhile. Feeling bad and not wanting to abandon the poor thing, he stuffed it in his sweater and had it's head poking out.

And with that, Mango went back to work.

User ImageIt had been a turbulent year for Fenaret, his family, and his community. It was nice, then, to be going to the Winter Solstice festival at the Academy with his family. Ra couldn't be with them, sadly--she had work today at the museum, but Mom had a day off today and she was taking them around. Their first stop was a booth where they could get free stockings to carry things in. The stockings tended to be the same every year, but it was nice to have something to carry things in, and they were nice to have as decorations around the house. Fena picked a purple one, but he was also handed a stuffed vespercat and a bag of peppermint bark by the Imp attending the booth. Fena smiled. "Thank you, and happy solstice!"

User ImageUser ImageUser Image

User ImageFrancesca was disappointed that Ra couldn't be there, but hey, at least he had Mom and Fena to go with? Frankie picked out a yellow and orange stocking from the options, and, like his brother, received another prize. His was another vespercat plush--in one of his favorite colors, even!--and a bag of peanut brittle to go along with it. "Thanks!" he said. "Uh, happy solstice, again!"

User ImageUser ImageUser Image

User ImageVerity smiled at her sons and accepted a stocking from the vendor. They didn't have any straight purple ones, so she picked a pink one trimmed with purple. She waved off a stuffed animal and candy, though. "I'd rather have a book, thanks," she said with a smile.

"Oh, we've got those, too!" the Imp said. They handed her a book. "Will this one do?"

Verity grinned. "I think it will do very nicely. Thank you, and have a happy solstice!" She took her sons' hands and led them onward to the next booth.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageJie could hardly contain the excitement of having Ciel on her arm. The blind hybrid had been delighted to join her at the Solstice festival, and had even jokingly referred to it as a date! Now if only she had been serious about that...

Jie selected a blue stocking, which to her delight had a pair of jingle bell earrings in them. She clipped the bells to her ears. "Which stocking would you like, Ciel?" she asked.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageCiel was finding it difficult not to tremble--she felt like she should be shaking herself out of a dream! But no, that sweet Bakeneko had linked an arm with hers and was taking her to the Solstice festival. It was like they were on a date or something! Not...official, of course. Not that being unofficial would necessarily be bad? Jie was almost eighteen, so they were in the same age range (only a year and a half younger than Ciel), so it wasn't creepy, was it, to be dating an Academy student?

Not that they were officially dating, of course.

"I'd like one that's festive," she said. "Whatever color you'd like is up to you." She took the stocking that Jie put in her hands and felt it. Ah, yes, jingle bell earrings! She clipped them onto her ears. "Thank you so much! How do I look?" she giggled.

User ImageIt was sort of hard to believe that after months of moping, Quilo's life could turn around so quickly. But it had! There was a warm, strong hand wrapped around his, and he felt like he was walking on air. He had a boyfriend! A real, actual boyfriend! Gosh, he hoped he didn't mess this relationship up like he had the last one. But nope, not gonna think about that today, because today, we're out at the festival with our new boyfriend and his kid sister. Yup! Had he ever even met Rowan?

Was it weird that he had just thought about Ella? He shouldn't be thinking about her--especially because it still hurt. But it didn't hurt as much as it used to. Still...he was not going to think about Ella, because walking at his side was Xenophon. Xenophon Piper. Yes! And Quilo, Quilo was walking on air.

At the stocking booth, he got a blue stocking with a book tucked inside it. He grinned. "I'm not really looking for many prizes this year," he said to Xeno. "But I wanted to at least get a stocking. I got the orange one last time I went."

User ImageUser Image

User ImageDid teenagers lose their brain the instant they met someone they liked? Was that a thing? Either way, ew. But Ruka was stuck with her lovestruck brother today, and hey, at least her brother's boyfriend was nice? Even if he kept taking Xeno's attention away. Eh. Quilo seemed like a nice guy, and his Geist features made him feel like a member of the family already. Please don't let either of them screw this up, she thought as she took a black stocking. The Imp at the stand handed her a stuffed animal with a pair of bells clipped onto the ears with a wink. "Happy solstice!" the Imp chirped.

Ruka nodded, grinning with delight. Her brother had a goat plushie just like this, and she had been envious of it for some time! "Thanks!" she said. "Thank you so much, and happy solstice!" She didn't normally like strange adults, but...

User ImageUser ImageUser Image

User ImageXeno could hardly believe his luck, either. He had a boyfriend! A really nice one! He gave Quilo's hand a squeeze to reassure himself that the hybrid really was there. He was hard pressed between paying attention to the guy on his arm or paying attention to his little sister. Life could be so cruel...but Ruka seemed to be paying attention to where she was, so he could surely afford a couple glances, maybe one every few seconds, to Quilo?

He grinned at Quilo. "I think Ruka will be looking for more stuff than me," he said. "I've got babysitting duty today, so I think we're staying until she's done." He picked up a red stocking. "No kidding? I got the orange one too!" Xeno's stocking, too, had a book inside it--some romantic novel or other. Interesting... He held it up to Quilo. "Hey, what do you think? Are you..." He waggled his eyebrows, "taken by the Chimera?"

User ImageWinter Solstice was not getting off on a very good foot. Veddy was sick today, which meant that he couldn't come with them to the festival. That left just Aura and their other friend, Sound Lee, to go to the Festival alone. With promises to share their extra candy canes with him, they set off to the festival, all bundled up against the biting cold. "I don't see any tempting fish yet," Aura muttered as she took the brightest red stocking she could find. "What about you, Lee?" She clipped the red earrings inside the stocking to her ears.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageSound Lee shook his head sadly. "Nope," he said. "No sign of fish he doesn't already have. But that doesn't mean we can't keep looking." He was just taking a blue stocking for himself as an aetherjelly swept across his face. Instinctively, he reached out to grab it--gently. It pulsed against his hand, then twined around his wrist. "I think that's a good sign," he said to Aura. "That we'll find something today."

User Image"So how long do you want to go looking for prizes this year?" Eidil asked Cal. "'Cause I'm absolutely taking you dancing later. I've looked at the band list, it's a good one." She took a warm-colored stocking from the options and smiled at the vendor. "Oo, a book! Thank you so much, happy solstice!"

User ImageUser Image

User ImageCal snorted. "I figured we'd be dancing," she said. She turned out a boot to show it off. "That's why I brought my dancing boots." She took a stocking of her own, a blue one, which had a glowing bulb necklace in it. "I think we should go dancing sooner rather than later. Less stuff to way us down while we boogie."

User ImageUser Image

User ImageTakaroa hadn't been back to the Academy since...well, since he'd graduated a couple years ago. It was weird to be back again. But hey, the Winter Solstice festival was the perfect time to return, and it kept him away from his roommate. She was becoming increasingly anxious right now--he needed to stay out of her way.

Takaroa took a blue stocking from the options available, and as he did, a jelly drifted into his arm. He smiled and scooped up the peppermint striped aetherjelly. "I hope this means you want to come home with me," he murmured.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageIt was sort of weird to be going to a festival with your not-yet-official significant other's brother, wasn't it? Until recently, Chries hadn't even known that Zalir had a brother, but then again, apparently it had been a shock to both Zalir and to zeir brother.

Anyway, Naihilus had asked to come to the Festival with Chries, as their respective SOs (or rather, not-quite-SOs) were too busy (Zalir had a project to work on and Nai's boyfriend Kuni was feeling under the weather), so Chries had agreed. He took a purple stocking with orange candy canes peeking out of it and looked around. "Where would you like to go first, Nai?"

User ImageUser Image

User ImageIt's weird enough finding out that you have a sibling, but to find out that that sibling has a crush is also a little...odd. Some sort of strange, protective instinct came over Nai, and he felt the urge to scope out this guy, make sure that he wasn't going to leave Zalir in the lurch. Especially considering the rumors around school about this Anchriesel fellow...

Zalir liked him. Apparently, Chries was nice to him, and they had a lot to talk about. But Nai did not trust Chries, and since Kuni was too sick to go to the festival (and had kicked him out of their dorm, to be honest), well, why not spend an afternoon checking out this scoundrel of an Imp and vetting him for your long-lost sibling?

Nai took a red stocking, one with a book on alchemy in it. That was the main reason he picked that stocking--Zalir loved alchemy, but Nai was still new to it. "I don't know," he murmured back to Chries. "Maybe we could find some guessing games while the day is young and our minds are sharp?"

User ImageEvelyn was busy hanging out with her friends today, which meant that for once, Darryl had Da all to himself!

Sort of.

Slithering along with them on Da's other side was Heru. Darryl generally preferred Heru's company to Evey's. He couldn't explain why, but every time he tried to come up with an explanation, he had a different one. Between them, they had the normal number of limbs people generally have. Both of them had scales (although Darryl's were very tiny). But what he'd had to admit was that it was because Heru looked up to him in a way that an older sibling never looks up to a younger one. It was...weird. But yeah, any resentment Darryl had for Heru being the baby of the family and the attention-hogger (in his mind at least) was diminished by the way she interacted with him. She had a tendency to sass back at him when he said something snarky--Evey never did that. Neither did their parents. Only Heru would. Maybe that's why I like hanging out with her more. She's more like me.

Sort of.

Darryl took one of the purple and pink stockings, and to his delight he was also handed a stuffed animal, a purple Fennekit plush. He nodded solemnly at the Imp handling the stockings. He'd also gotten a set of purple candy canes in his stocking--sweet! Literally.

User ImageUser ImageUser Image

User ImageHeru would have been bouncing on her eels if she had any. A day to spend with Da and with Darryl! Very nice! Mother had homework to do and Evey was busy with friends doing...something. But Heru got Da and Darryl, and you couldn't get better than that! Heru picked up a black stocking, to which the Imp added a stuffed brown fox and an antler headband. She rammed the headband onto her head. "Awesome! Happy Solstice!" she said to the vendor, before grabbing her family's hands and tugging on them. "Come on, let's go!"

User ImageUser ImageUser Image

User ImageGuereda gently resisted their daughter's arm tugging. "Just a moment, Heru, I'd like to get a stocking, too." Reda picked up a stocking of their own, another purple one, and with it they got a mug. Reda smiled. Mesi would like this mug! They resolved to give it to their soulmate when they got home.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageYaviss wouldn't have believed it a month ago if you'd told him that he would be going to the Winter Solstice Festival with other people, but...well, stuff had happened, y'know? Currently, the Goblin was walking side by side with Zuna. That was pretty strange--he definitely wouldn't have thought that he'd befriend the likes of her

Yaviss got a black stocking, but to his surprise, he was handed a green plushie and a pair of green earrings. "You look cheerful," the Imp running the stand said with a wink.

Yaviss blinked. He hadn't thought that he was looking all that cheerful? But apparently he was? "Thanks," he murmured. "Happy solstice!"

User ImageUser ImageUser Image

User ImageZuna got a blue stocking with a book in it, one about a voidmaiden. She didn't get a stuffed animal, but she only felt a twinge of jealousy about that. "I don't see Xyla yet," she said. "But I think I see Quilo over there." She pointed in the direction of the blue hybrid, who was walking hand-in-hand with a Chimera. "I guess that's Xenophon over there."

User ImageMary kept an eye out as she slithered to the festival for some new friends she'd made. Okay, so...let's see if she remembered this correctly...

She was friends with Xyla--they'd met at a library a few years ago and hit it off. Xyla was friends with Yaviss, who was friends with Zuna and with Quilo. Quilo had a boyfriend named Xenophon and Xenophon had a younger sister named Nkiruka.

Good thing she Mary had a good memory--she hadn't even bothered to explain all of this to Kiva. Kiva would have been lost in seconds.

Just ahead of the hybrid she spied Yaviss and Zuna. She sped up to catch up to them, taking a purple stocking and a book along with it. "Hey, what did I miss? Any sign of the others?"

User ImageUser Image

User ImageDenidar was feeling pretty excited for the Solstice festival. He had been sure that they would miss it this year, but nope, turns out their return home to Zephyros for winter break would be tomorrow instead of today. Instead of packing, as they probably should have been doing, the Ramorth siblings were spending the day at the festival. Deni got a green stocking and grinned when he saw his twin had picked a matching one in red. But before he could say anything to either of his siblings, he felt something crawl up his ankle. He looked down to see a striped Salamander clinging to his leg. "Y'all must be takin' a break from the crowds," he murmured. He picked up the beleaguered amphibian and tucked it into his breast pocket. "Poor thang."

User ImageUser Image

User ImageMelisara also picked a red stocking--hey, red was her favorite color, so what if it was the same one as Niol had picked? She hung it from her belt with the ease of practice and clipped on the pair of earrings stuffed into the toe of the stocking. "Nahce Salamander, Deni."

User ImageUser Image

User ImageNiol couldn't resist the red stocking available, as it was a reverse of his twin's. It seemed like their twin luck was holding out, though--he, too, felt something crawl up his leg. He scooped up the red striped Salamander and put it in his own pocket. "Ah guess they were trahin' ta get outta the crowd," he said. "The best way not t'get squished is t' crawl up someone's leg, Ah guess?"

User ImageUser Image

User ImageEbene looked around the crowd for her roommate. She and Amut had planned to go to the festival today at the Academy. Amut, however, had insisted on visiting her parents while she was here. The two would be meeting up later. Still, that didn't mean Ebene couldn't take a look around to see if her friend had arrived earlier than planned.

From the looks of it, no, she had not. Ebene sighed and picked up a yellow stocking (the purple one had a bit too much pink on it for her tastes). It came with a book--a book about "dark alchemy." Sounded good to Ebene! She put it back inside the stocking and wandered out into the crowd.

Addie stood near the booths, enjoying her first candy cane of the season. She did love a little treat now and then. ... It was a nice distraction from studying.

Veruca

Veruca wasn't thrilled with the whole idea of this holiday. Instead she opted to curl up with a 'good' book in her dorm.

Hanae

Hanae stood at the entrance to the academy grounds, looking absolutely delighted. She'd never witnessed a festival like this before. She'd been told it was all very festive, so she'd invested in an enchanted necklace.

Hyacinth

Hyacinth lay on her dormroom bed, listening to the sounds drift up from the courtyard below. A distant smile played across her face. She was looking forward to heading down and joining in the fun, she just wanted to rest a bit longer. Using magic to create a sort of second-sight for herself was tiring, and she'd already been in class all day. ... May just a quick nap first. She shut her eyes, but they popped open.

She felt a presence in her room. An aether jelly hovered near her head, clearly intent on staying. Cinny grinned. Solstice was already looking up.

Marine

Marine sat in their common room, wrapped up in blankets. They'd had a sniffly cold for some time now, and still weren't feeling very well. The little Grimm perked up when their caretaker brought them a mug of tea.

Cuileann was happy that the festival for the winter solstice was finally here. She adored her time she spent here last year and felt right at home even though it was colder than usual.

Spying a small game off to the side she wandered over to see what it was and the prizes. Her eyes immediately became wide when she saw it had books to give away, she was intrigued. Curious as to what she needed to do she began to read the instructions and saw all she had to do was spin the small circle on the table and depending upon the number she would win. She did not care what number she got as long as it was not anything ending in 0. Since those was a no no number meaning no prize. Watching it spin, she got anxious. It suddenly stopped on 17! She was thrilled and carefully chose her little trinket prize, a book. Muttering thank you's under her breath she wandered away already engrossed in her book.

Lokni was pleased with the cold weather, he of course was obsessed with anything weather related and knew the festival was a great place to get data to use in his thesis for class. All different races was here and he was carefully watching how they reacted in different parts of the festival as some was fully outside, others had tents to protect them from some of the weather elements, others were inside in the warmth and some were in between. As he studied those about him and taking readings of temperature and such, he noticed a blue plush with a snowflake on it. He thought it was perfect for him and he walked over to see what he had to do to win one. "Pretty simple" he thought as he saw the game, it was a toss the rings game and he knew it wouldn'tt be that hard. His turn came and was handed 5 rings, the trick was you had to ring the cone matching the plush color in order to win one. He tried 4 times and missed each time, but the fifth toss he nailed the blue one in the center. Happy he chose the plush that caught his eye and walked off to finish his data collecting.

Karayas was looking around for her friend Cuileann she met last year at the festival but so far did not see her. Shrugging to herself, she started to wander about looking for something she could play. Noticing a small booth she approached and this was not a game it was where you could color a picture and if the attendant liked it you got your choice of prizes which included books, plushies and other trinkets. She picked her coloring page and sat down, concentrating hard she colored slowly so it was neat but pretty. Finishing she handed it to the attendant and bounced up and down on her tippy toes in anticipation hoping it was good enough. Suddenly she heard choose a prize little blue one, your picture is lovely I will display it on this board. She looked and only 1 other picture was hanging which made her feel good. Looking around she slowly saw all the prizes and a brown plush with antlers and a red hoodie caught her attention. Shyly she asked for that particular plush and hugged it when she had it in her arms.

Kayndie almost decided not to attend this year's festival she was an alumni but she figured why not? It was for fun, and she was allowed to attend so she went. Wandering about the festival she came across a small tent that was giving out small trinkets to those who stopped. Curious she leaned in and spied on a shelf tucked in the back snowglobes. "Beautiful" was her thought. She smiled almost smirkingly and pointed. Next thing it was in her hands and she casually nodded and sauntered off admiring her new trinket.

Iason was feeling somewhat festive although he wanted to enjoy the season's sweets as usual. He wouldn't admit it to many but he had a major sweet addiction. Loving the flavors of this solstice the most, he eagerly looked forward to this festival for months now. Scanning the different tents, booths and tables he finally spied what he was looking for, the candy table. He walked almost jogged over to get his sweet on. Eyes big as saucers he oogled the goodies until finally settling on some peppermint/spearmint yummies. Without second thought opened the bag and grabbed a handful and promptly began to eat with a heavenly look on his face.

Cleo had been curious of all the festivities, wanting to always learn more. She approached a table asking trivia related to the season. One of the questions was 'how many of each snowflake appears in each blizzard'. With a scoff, Cleo answered quietly, "it is a trick question, clearly. They are all unique." The man running the stand smiled at her - smiled at her, how horrible - and offered a prize. She was ready to decline, until she noticed the small plant. With a rare smile she accepted it and whispered quietly, "welcome to the family."

Bebe pranced through the festival grounds cheerfully, dragging Teto behind her. "These festivities are lovely, Bebe! I've never seen anything like it," Teto said in awe as the bakeneko dragged her to the nearest stall. "You haven't seen anything yet, Teto! Here, throw this," she said excitedly, offering the kumiho a small ball. The two of them took turns hitting the targets until they each one a prize. Bebe flashed a silly grin at Teto as she wrapped a silver boa around her and Teto couldn't help but laugh as she did the same, although hers was a flashy green.

Raven had naturally gravitated towards the crafting stall, and couldn't help but notice a fashionable little freshling who was picking over the bracelets. They both reached for the same one and as Raven went to glare the child down, Quinn just looked up with a lazy grin. "You take it," he said casually, retracting his hand from the purple beads. Raven couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt and, fortunately, noticed a bracelet he liked even more. "Forget it, you put your bratty little hands on it, who knows where they've been," he retorted, claiming the black bracelet and stalking away. Quinn just grinned at him as he left, shrugging and taking the purple one. It'd look better on him, anyway. The stall owner smiled at Quinn and offered them a plushie to reward their attempted generosity. Plushies weren't usually his thing, but he could resist the giant vespercat plushie that was almost his size

Miraculously, Zeerah had managed to drag his twin, Xero, to the Solstice festival. "This place is awesome, huh Ghoul?" he asked excitedly, trying to get his brother in the festive mood. His twin just glared at him in response, but at least he didn't wander back to their dorm. "Hey look, they're giving out free books," he pointed out, trying to sound interested in something so bland as books, "that's your thing, right? Come on." Zeerah struggled to find a book that could possibly be interesting to him, but ended up picking one that looked mildly entertaining. He looked over to his twin who, unsurprisingly, had selected a book on dark magic. Oh well, at least he was somewhat getting into the spirit of things.

Thomas had volunteered to man a sweets stand, but mostly so he could grab all the free stuff he wanted when no one was looking. He'd been helping himself to some peanut brittle when he noticed a shy-looking demon approaching his stall. Grinning, he leaned on the counter and winked at her - although it was hard to tell with all those eyes. "Hey cutie, watcha looking for?" He asked smoothly. The demon, Essurio, looked up at him with obvious fear, too nervous to offer a response. Thomas frowned; he wasn't exactly good with kids but hey, this was his job. "Hey, you got the same amount of eyes as me! Cool," he said cheerfully, grateful his two extra eyes were under the counter. "Here kid, that means you can have this on the house," he explained, offering her some fairy floss. Essurio took it hesitantly, quickly withdrawing herself once she had grabbed it. "Th-thank-you," she said softly.
