Keri Umeda watched her coworkers do their dances to Mew during a New Year tea ceremony. She wasn’t permitted to dance because she often deviated and would preform more theatrical dance movements. Sometimes combining different dance styles all together.
“Keri, have you picked your pokemon yet. You know we can’t just give you an Eevee. You’re not ready for it. There are Cherubi and Bounsweets in the other room. Why don’t you pick one of them before the ceremony ends.” snickered one of the dancers that was on their break.
“I really don’t care for any of your pokemon, or your dances. When can I do the dances my way anyway?” Keri asked harshly.
“You don’t, you have to preform the dance a certain way. Always. What, are you just not good enough to follow the steps?” the dancer asked.
“It’s boring. We’re suppose to dance with all our heart, how can I when I’m so limited. It’s not like anyone has died or anything, so it’s not important to follow the silly steps.” Keri countered.
“Tsk tsk tsk, god pokemon do not care, you give them respect and dance the way we’ve always danced for them.”
“If I were a god pokemon I’d be bored to tears. No wonder we never see one show up.” Keri muttered.
“What was that?” the dancer glared.
“I’m going to look at those pokemon then.” Keri quickly excused herself before she got into any more trouble.
The kimono girl in training, who wore blue incorrectly for this holiday, and felt very out of place. She’d much rather do her own thing, but she also wanted to dance and be dedicated. When she was small she loved the kimono girls in Johto. She’d sit and watch them on the television special when it aired. It’d cost too much to get on a ferry to go home at this point. Her family didn’t seem to care when she said she was off to be a kimono girl. It was unlikely they’d just let her back into their lives rent free, and freeloading until she could figure out what to do.
She walked into the storage room where she saw pokemon grun and hide from her, but one bounced over to her and headbutted her in the shin.
“Ow, you stupid thing.”
She quickly kicked the small pokemon across the room in anger at it. It bounced off the wall and landed on the floor. It rolled towards her and bounced hitting her again in the leg knocking Keri over. Keri gritted her teeth and sat up.
“Oh, you’ll pay for that one! Not just you too! I hate you stupid things!” her anger on feeling trapped got the better of her as she stood up grabbing a broom.
No pokemon was beyond her wrath as she assaulted them all with the broom. She froze only with the door opened. Light poured from behind her. She could hear the pokemon crying. She’d be in for it now.
“Hey not a bad idea. Now they’ll be all ready for the scalding water.”
She turned around to face the waitress that she had talked to prior.
“What?” she was confused. Weren’t this pokemon used in the dance? Why would be they be put in scalding water?
“For the tea of course.” the waitress smiled. “You’ll never get a pokemon anyway, maybe this will be your job. It’s not like you can dance or anything.
She stared, and saw red. The whole place seemed to be on fire. How many times did she beat up the pokemon here? She thought they were the same ones, but now she doubted it. She helped kill off so many of them when she was upset, and didn’t even know it. There was a high pitched cry, and she looked down at a slightly beat up Bounsweet. It was the one that attacked her.
Keri looked back at the waitress.
“I’ve had it with you! You’re nothing like the Kimono Girls! JUMP!”
“What?” she was confused as to why Keri shouted jump.
The bounsweet jumped and Keri kicked it hard right at her face. She fell over with a start. As the Bounsweet flew back Keri caught it. She looked back at all the small crying pokemon.
“MOVE IT!” Keri shouted at them, but they only coward.
Bounsweet looked up at Keri a little surprised. Then jumped out of her arms making noises. Eventually the horde of pokemon started running. She’d be fired. She knew it. Keri turned on her heel and ran to her room to pack. She could already hear the commotion at the ceremony. The other Kimono Girls in a panic trying to round out the fleeing pokemon but the pokemon where much to small and quick to be caught. Keri zipped up her duffel bag and left the tea shop. She went right to the police to tell them what had happened to close the shop down. It wasn’t that she was against pokemon cruelty, but she hated being caged, and it was her revenge. No one will claim she can’t dance. Not without a dance off.
Now where would she go though. She had a romanticize dream of running away. When she listened to her radio. Catching some of the odd stations were Team Rocket would project their plans. She always thought that’d be fun. To be a part of something so organized and thought out. She turned on her small solar powered radio to look for anything. She managed to catch something. A message looking for recruits for team Snagum.
She nodded to herself. What did she have to lose? As she went to try to stole away on a ferry to go to Kanto something hit her on the rear forcing her to topple over. She sat up and looked back with a fierce face. There was the Bounsweet glaring back at her. Keri slowly opened her duffel bag and pulled out a pokeball. It was meant to be used for when she was given her Eevee.
“I’m not your babysitter.” She told the Bounsweet. As the two glared for a longer time. “Don’t forget. I beat you.” She was surprised this Bounsweet still stayed. “I won’t like you either. I’m only letting you tag along because we’re running from the same people got it.” she pointed the pokeball at the small creature.
They continued to glare at each other. Neither one forgiving the other. For Keri the Bounsweet represent a broken cage. For the Bounsweet she imagened it wouldn’t forgive her for killing pokemon for four years of her life.
A red line shot out at the Bounsweet and it vanished into the ball. Keri stood up and looked at the ball.
“Your name. If you continue to follow me. Will be Kabuki.” she pocketed the ball and ran to
Keri stood up and went to board the Ferry to leave Melemele Island, and head to Kanto. She found herself standing in berries, her blue kimono soaked red. At some point she fell asleep inside the barrel.
“Hey what the heck?! A stow away?”
The masculin voice woke her up. She stared up at the patrolman. She wasn’t sure what to do and stood up. She lowered her head letting her bangs fall in front of her face.
“Finally, a victem. I’ll eat out your heart.” she said in a whisper. She hoped that her red kimono would scare the idiot away.
The man backed away then waited for a moment.
“You’re not fooling me girly! Come with me, we’ll have to go to the crew quarters and take you back after we drop off shipment at Kanto.”
Keri looked up and reached into her pocket and tossed out her pokeball. She was determined NOT to be sent home. She refused. Kabuki was still a bit worn out from their fight but would try to fight.
“All right. If you win, I’ll let you stay got it.” he called out his snubbull.
“Fine by me. Kabuki, play rough!” ( 1d10 = 7 hit, 1d10 = 3 doesn’t lower attack)
The snubbull winced in pain but just glared angrily at the Bounsweet in front of it.
“Tch, scary face now, lets freak it out.”
The snubbul showed it teeth and looked very frightening. Keri felt a chill run up her spine. Kabuki’s eyes twitched, and resisted to shake. It was afraid but was too stubborn to run away. It was adamant and could feel Keri needed to win this battle.
“Keep playing rough! We don’t have time to wear it down just go!”
(1d10 = 6 hit, 1d10 = 10 doesn’t lower attack)
Kabuki did a spin, confirming she understood. Kabuki bounced and seemed to bounce on snubbull causing it a lot of damage, but Kabuki seemed a little hesitant in it’s jumps. Fearing the snubbull would bite her. The scary face still in the forward of her mind.
“Why you Snubbull quick use tackle. Send that little pest flying!”
Snubbull moved out of the way of a bounce and quickly ran right into the small Bounsweet. It sent the pokemon flying right at Keri. Keri quickly caught her pokemon and fell over holding her (Kabuki) on her (Keri’s) stomach.
“Just give up. Your pokemon looks too warn out to keep going.
Kabuki bounced off Keri’s stomach and was in front of Snubbull again.
“PLAY ROUGH!” Keri shouted.
(1d10 = 9 hit, 1d10 6 = doesn’t lower attack)
The snubbull swayed a bit feeling uneasy.
“Do you risk it?! Do you? I won’t stop! It’s worse if I go back! I won’t let you take me back!” Keri shouted.
The officer knew his snubbull was done for the count. He wanted to figure out what was wrong and went forwards. Another chill ran up her spine. Cops, had cells, and cells were cages. She recalled Kabuki and turned running as fast as she could. She found herself on the upper deck and ran through the crowd. She looked out. They where close to Kanto. Close enough for her to swim to Pallet town. She just kept running as fast as she could. She moved her duffel bag to her back as best she could. Keri jumped onto the railing and then jumped off. With a spin that propelled her further than she could jump had she just jumped normally. There was a splash and she started swimming towards Kanto.
A Snagum Recruit Agent had watched the ordeal. The recruiter called out a Blastois and rode at a distance behind her. Impressed the small girl had the stamina to swim the rest of the way. It was possible she would make a decent snagum agent. Keri pulled herself out of the water.
“So tell me, do you often get in trouble with the feds?” the recruiter asked.
She looked at him. There was no way she could take out that pokemon. “It must be pretty bad where you first lived huh? To run away like that. What are you hungry for exactly?”
“Leave me alone I’m busy trying to find someone.”
“Oh? Do you need help?” He asked.
She was quiet. Then noticed a snag machine. She looked at him.
“I’m looking for you.”
“Oh, really?”
“Are you, from Team Snagum?”
He just smiled and jumped off his pokemon, recalling it.
“Lets get you to a nearby base. Follow me.”
She looked down at her Pokeball. Then to the man walking away. She quickly followed after him. This was going better than she could have hopped for.
