"You grew beautifully." Peony's voice was no more than a whisper, the faintest smile on his lips as he hunched over the planter box. They were not much more than rough wood thrown together with cheap soil filled to the very top. Still, to someone like Peony, who loved flowers of all kinds and gardening, they were pure gold. Even if the wood was cheap and the soil poor, love and devotion could make any species grow.
That was why the sight of the box, filled with lush blooms, pleased him to no end. Weeks of hard work had finally paid off. This had been a long term experiment in cross-breeding, with the culmination of his efforts finally blossoming - literally. Cross-breeds of Rose and Lavender, giving off a refreshing, relaxing scent while being visually stunning. Their colors varied from deep purple to softer white or pastel purples. Some of them had spotty, calico like markings.
From a basket he had brought with him, he took out trimmers and began to harvest a good portion of the flowers. Enough that when he finally set the trimmers back the basket was overflowing with the fragrant blooms. Most of the harvest he would save and dry, make into potpourri or mix with tea leaves and try to make a tasty drink. But a large portion he had special plans for.
Peony returned to the school, his burden wrapped carefully in his arms, as if he were carrying a precious stone. A few older Seniors opened doors when they saw him coming, offering soft compliments about the fragrance. Peony could do no more than blush bashfully and nod his thanks before ducking his head and walking faster away. After a few turns, he made it to his destination - The infirmary.
These flowers were meant to help the partakers relax, and those in the infirmary needed to relax the most! They were sick, after all. It seemed only fitting that he give them some. Also, flowers just made every feel better. They could easily brighten a room. After leaving some at the front, Peony walked further in, willing himself to be brave. These were sick kids! They needed something positive. So he picked a nightmare that didn't seem too hostile, just to warm up with... Right. Just a warm up.
"U-uhm... Hel... hello..." Peony stumbled across his words, attempting as best he could to catch Mneme's attention.

This time, it definitely wasn't just his imagination. Mneme was a frequent visitor of the infirmary, and most of it was nothing that really needed any medical attention. A sniffle, a sneeze, a slight chill- all were reason enough for Mneme to come check in. He had a weak immune system, after all. And if it wasn't his own idea, it was definitely Melete's. On this occasion, he had a rather bad headache and felt achy all over, though the rest of whatever he'd come down with hadn't hit yet. Mneme did not want it to. He laid on the infirmary bed, dazed and hoping the medicine Miss Yuki had given him would kick in soon.
If he was lucky, it'd n** whatever this was in the bud before it got worse. He rolled over onto one side, taking the time to make sure he didn't accidentally wrap himself up in his own hair- or, well, he was, but the sound of someone speaking distracted him from his attempts to clear the mattress. Blinking, he turned his gaze to the pink geist that had entered the room... when had they entered..? He blinked again, eyes drifting to the basket the freshling was carrying, then back to their face before he nodded a return greeting.
"Hello. Are you sick too? Miss Yuki stepped out for a couple of minutes but she said she'd be right back."

x x x Peony was about to refute the question when it occurred to him that... Well... He wasn't sure. Was he sick? Did he feel icky? No and no. After a troubled minute, the little geist finally shook his head, "No, I don't think I am. I actually came here for you.
"I... I mean not you specifically, I didn't know you'd be here." What an awkward thing to say. Coughing, Peony tried to giggle off his nerves. Setting the basket down, he pulled out two fresh flowers and offered them to Mneme, "I mean for those in the infirmary. Uhm..."
Taking a deep breath, he started again, "These are a special hybrid flower of rose and lavender that I have been growing," There was a shift in his tone and posture, as confidence swelled in him again. Gardening was what he knew. Being sick? Not so much, "I grew them thinking that those in the infirmary would like something soothing and nice to smell and look at. Lavender is great stress relief! And Roses well... Smell good."

Mneme blinked again, slowly, as he watched the geist think about whether they were sick or not... Was that really up for debate? Didn't people come to the nurses office knowing something was wrong? Mneme did, anyway. "Huh..?" He tilted his head in confusion for a moment, at least until Peony explained.
The hybrid stared at the flowers for a moment before finally reaching out to take them. They were very pretty... probably some of the prettiest he'd seen up close, actually. He listened while Peony explained himself a little more, and brought the flowers closer to his nose to give them a little sniff. Ah, he was right! They did smell good.
"They're really pretty.." Mneme nodded a little as he gave them another careful sniff. Was... his headache subsiding? "They smell really nice, too. Thank you. You made them??" Mneme shifted a little to be more comfortable on the bed- though didn't make an offer for Peony to join him. What if his headache was contagious??? Never mind that headaches weren't contagious... Mneme didn't want to risk it.

x x x Great relief swept over the little geist as Mneme sniffed at the flower. All that hard work was paying off!
"I did," Peony smiled with genuine pride as his cheeks grew even redder, "Well, I made the hybrid. The flowers were always there." He couldn't help but giggle at the idea that he had made lavender and roses from thin air. Though it was doubtful that that was what Mneme was suggesting.
"It took a bunch of tries to get them to get this hybrid. Usually, the flowers would just end up as one or the other, either Lavender or Rose. This generation finally mixed together. I'm proud of them.
Gardening is really fun. I try to grow lotsa different things, but especially flowers. Everyone likes them, and they can have health benefits," Peony realized then that he had been blathering on and on about himself and plants. That was rather rude, wasn't it?
"Y-you?" He squeaked out softly. Oh, that made no sense, "N-no, I mean... How come you're here? Since M-miss Yuki is out, can I get you something?"

Hybrid... kind of like Mneme himself. But not really- the way adults talked about it, making hybrid people seemed to be a lot easier than making hybrid plants. At least judging by the way Peony was talking about them. And he did that all by himself? Without a teacher helping him? Mneme nodded quietly along with what Peony was saying- not really understanding how much work he must've put into it but admiring that he'd been good enough at something to actually... accomplish it.
"That sounds like it was really hard.. it really paid off." He managed a small smile. Oh... wouldn't the flowers wither away now though...? He glanced around for a vase or something to put them in, but, predictably there wasn't really anything available... maybe Miss Yuki would have something when she got back...
"Huh? Oh.." He turned his gaze back to Peony. "I have a really bad headache. And I think I'm getting something in my chest- you know? Like when its hard to breathe just a little?" He patted at his chest with his free hand. In reality, nothing was wrong. He'd just happened to take an awkward breath and assumed the worse. Sure, the headache was a thing, but those just... happened.
"Oh, no, I'm okay. Miss Yuki told me I should just lay down for a little while and finish my water." He nodded, then pointed to the mostly finished waterbottle on the table next to the bed. "Oh..." It suddenly dawned on him that he didn't know this geist's name-- and he didn't know Mneme's, either! How rude! "I'm Mneme, what's your name?"

Peony nodded, pleased that at least the geist-hybrid had everything he needed while Miss Yuki was out of the room. "T-thank goodness. I'm sure if she said rest and water would work then y-you'll be fine."
His name was Mneme. A pretty name. "Mneme..." Peony spoke slowly as if tasting the words for the first time. It was pretty! "I love your name. My name is Peony. It's really n-nice to meet you, Mneme."
There was no one else in the infirmary, therefore giving out more flowers was impossible. He supposed he could set them next to the beds... Though would Miss Yuki be displeased with that? If she was, that would be awful. Better to then wait patiently, he decided. "I-if you have a h-headache I can be quiet. U-uhm... There's no one else here...."
Gosh, what now? He was starting to get nervous and that was just making him want to retreat more. Peony nervously tugged at his skirt, "I could make you a flower crown!" The inspiration came from nowhere. Excitement bubbled up, "If that's okay. I could show you or just make it for you. I... I couldn't just l-leave you alone without Miss Yuki." His logic was a little flimsy, but his intentions were kind hearted. After all, Miss Yuki had left Mneme alone. Why couldn't he? It just seemed wrong. Though never in a million years would he question what Miss Yuki was doing. She had important business to take care of, no doubt!

Mneme nodded, he had absolute trust in Miss Yuki, though sometimes he wondered if she wasn't taking him very seriously. It wasn't his fault he got sick a lot. (Okay, mostly it was just his mind playing tricks on him but who cares about the details??) "Mmhm. She said maybe I'm de--...dehydrated." He nodded once he'd figured out the word to use- it was a rather long one, after all!
"Thank you. Your name is really pretty, I like it." He smiled a little, and started to hold out a hand- but at the last moment settled it into his lap instead. He didn't want to spread anything to someone nice like Peony. "Its nice to meet you to. I don't want to... get you sick in case it isn't you know..." He trailed off, not really wanting to say 'dehydration' again. He tilted his head slightly at the offer to be quiet, then gently shook it side to side. "It's okay, you aren't very loud, really. And it's a little lonely in here." Honestly he'd been alone in the infirmary for quite some time. And while this was almost like a second dorm to him at this point, it did get quite dull when Melete wasn't visiting.
He was about to suggest that Peony pull up a chair when the offer came up. A flower crown? Oh, he loved those. His markings sparkled with intermittent light as he nodded. "Oh, yes, I'd like that a lot. I'm not very good at making them, but they're so pretty..." He clasped his hands together in front of his chest and sighed dreamily. "I'd like to see how you make it, if that's okay...?"

Whatever worry had been chewing on Peony was relieved when Mneme reassured him he wasn't too loud and that he wanted to watch him make a flower crown. "Th-that's just fine."
While the Geist could keep standing, he decided instead to find a chair and carry it closer. Dehydration sounded bad, but also vaguely familiar. Wasn't that... when you didn't have enough water? Flowers got that, right? He couldn't recall exactly. It was a rather cumbersome word.
As he pondered these things, the geist set his baskets at the foot of the infirmary bed that Mneme was lying on. Peony turned his new friend's resting space into a work bench without a second thought. Thankfully, he had made so many of them there was little chance making a mess everywhere. Besides, how could he show Mneme properly if he wasn't a bit close?
Taking one of the flowers out, he examed the length. It was a good thing he had cut them relatively long. The hardy green stem was nice and flexible. From the basket he took his clippers and showed them to Mneme, "S-since I don't really have claws I u-use these. You just make a small cut in the stem..." After a few little wiggles, the mostly-dull blade of the clippers poked through the stem successfully. He put them on his lap and grabbed a second flower, "Then you push the stem through the hole! And uh, you can wrap the steps around if they're flexible. Or cut them! Or uhm, work them together... You can also use wire, which makes it fast, but I like it this way c-cause it's all natural."
Once both of the flowers were together, they looked fuller and thicker. Peony moved on to the stem of the flower he had just joined and started to make another hole, "Are you sure you don't want to try?"

Mneme shifted to watch a little better, lying flat on his stomach and then propping his chin up on one hand, the other arm folded in front of him. He did this with Melete too, while his twin ranted or did his own hair- it was comfortable and familiar. As Peony explained, he nodded a little. "That makes sense. I clip mine short so I think I'd have to do the same." He didn't like having long nails- they made doing all sorts of things very difficult! And sometimes they snagged on fabric or his hair- it was just Not Good.
"Ooh... That looks much better than what I was doing..." He almost felt embarrassed to say- no wonder none of his crowns had stayed together! "I was just, um... braiding them... without any holes or wire or anything..." Mneme flashed a bashful sort of smile, momentarily glancing at Peony's face before returning his gaze to his hands. "I like the natural way too. That and I don't really like the sound of wire getting snapped." He shuddered a bit- something about that sound was just... wrong.
At Peony's question, he shook his head. "Um, maybe another time... I don't want to ruin your flowers after you worked so hard to make them!"

Peony was tempted to comfort him and say it would be no big deal - Flowers were meant to be used and enjoyed. It sounded pushy, though, so the geist only nodded in response. "Next time then." Would there be a next time? It... felt like there should be. Mneme was rather considerate and friendly, something that Peony enjoyed the most in others. Already his anxiety and shyness was calming down a smidgen.
As his fingers worked the branches, he fell into a rhythm of work. It was comforting and familiar, so much so that Peony forgot himself. Slowly he swayed back and forth, as if to some unknown song. It wouldn't be unknown for long, as the little geist started to hum a familiar children's lullaby. "Mmm, mmmm. Mmmmmm mm m MMMMmm."
The flower crown was finished, the petals of the sweet smelling hybrid flower pressed together. "Tadah! Uhm..." Wait he... had been silent all that time? Oh, god. There was the anxiety and shyness. Mneme probably thought he was really weird. A hot blush crossed his face, so strong that even the white swirling lines glowed white, "I... I uhm... Well... Here."
Reaching up, he placed the completed crown on Mneme's head.

Mneme nodded, "yes, next time." That... insinuated there was going to be a next time, but Mneme was fine with that. He rather liked Peony so far, perhaps... they could be friends? He didn't really have any aside from Melete and their roommate. This was... nice. He remained quiet while Peony worked, it was rather hypnotizing after a while. As the other boy began humming, he smiled a little. It was cute- Melete and himself would sometimes do the same thing when they worked on each other's hair.
"It's lovely." Mneme nodded, then leaned forward to make it easier for Peony to put it on his head. Ah- this was nice. Very nice. "I love it. Thank you, Peony. What song was that?" He couldn't help but ask- he wanted to know so he could find it later to listen! It sounded like a lovely song.

x "Y-you're welcome, Mneme. I'm glad you like it." As he pulled his fingers back, his hands naturally gravitated towards the cute star clip that was in Mneme's hair. Without much thought, the Geist took it out and slipped it into his sleeve. It was like a second nature, something that the geist wasn't fully aware he was doing or how it could be considered bad. By the time he did recognize what he had done, it was too late. Telling Mneme would just make things awkward... He'd have to give it back to him discretely next time.
Oh? Peony didn't think he had the best voice in the world, but he was willing to sing the lullaby a little if that was what Mneme wanted. Besides it would hopefully distract him from realizing what he had done.
"It's call 'A Geists Lullaby'. It goes like this.." clearing his throat, he started to sing softly. Peony could carry a tune, but as a child his voice was airy and soft, without much control.
"Over in New Valir Many years ago, Me Mither sang a song to me In tones so sweet and low. Just a simple little ditty, In her good 'ould' Geisty way, And I'd give the world if she could sing That song to me this day.
"Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li, Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry! Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li, Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's a Geisty lullaby."

Mneme hadn't even noticed the star clip being taken- the new weight on his head certainly disguised that anything was missing at all. Later he'd find out and worry, but for now Peony was in the clear. "Oh, I haven't heard it before." Mneme nodded slowly, leaning back into place as Peony struck up a tune.
He rather liked it- he didn't have much control over his own voice when he was singing either. "It's very nice... my mother used to sing us songs too." He sighed softly, then shrugged off the memory that wanted to surface. Oh no. It was not the time to remember sad things.
He was about to say something else, but the door opened and Miss Yuki's voice could be heard in the other room. He perked up a little, thinking perhaps this meant he'd be able to get something a little more than just 'lay down and take a nap'. "It sounds like Miss Yuki is back. Thank you for keeping me company, Peony."

Miss Yuki was back already? Well, Peony decided that was for the best. Gathering his things, he gave Mneme a true smile, "Of course. I... I will see you again." He paused only tp give Miss Yuki some of the flowers and then left the room. The little star clip burned a heavy weight in his left pocket. Typically shy, the Geist seemed even more paranoid, avoiding everyone and immediately going back to his room.
Maybe Hawthorne would know why he had been compelled to do that. Hawthorne was smarter, older... Sighing, Peony tucked the clip into a little box of jewelry he kept. He'd have to figure out gow to give it back.
Nepsah Sounds good! Thank you <3
