Usually when Myles started working on his candles he had everything prepared. Usually, even when things went wrong, he had a backup plan or the drive to take care of it.
Today, he'd just screwed up.
Halfway through mixing a few things he'd tripped over himself and spilled everything.
Everything.
His entire mixture, several open vials, and half a pound of wax.
The cleanup had been hell, and even though Myles had taken four showers since then, he still smelled strongly of apples and pine. He didn't seem too upset by it though--a bit exasperated, but hurrying to get his shopping done quickly. He had all the windows open and was doing everything he could to clear out the smell in the apartment--which was, by the way, not unpleasant...just overwhelming.
If Jeremy came home and saw him working, at least he couldn't yell--too much.
Myles had a few of the tell-tale candle making supplies in his basket--some new wicks, a few more jars, a pound of wax. Now, all he needed was to replenish a few of the aromas that he worked with. He tried to stay a few feet away from people, very aware of the aroma on him (even if he had since lose the ability to smell for the day).

Emily hadn’t been shopping for supplies lately. What with all the research she was putting into her new job with the Negaverse, the idea of having leisure time to even make her candles was starting to slowly slip away, and that made her quite unhappy, to tell the truth.
Especially with her library holding one of their craft fairs the weekend after next, she just had to get some supplies ready to sell at it. After all, she had held the record of most money brought in at the last five craft fairs, and she couldn’t let that record die now, just because she had gotten a new...er...hobby.
When she had entered the store, one of the cashiers fussed at her for being gone so long and honestly it made Emily feel quite happy to be missed, and quite embarrassed to be talked to like that. She grinned though, and spent a few minutes talking to the woman before making her way to the scent part of the store, and when she got to the aisle she was looking for, she was utterly assaulted by several smells at once.
“Woah. Who knocked over the essential oils?” Her words weren’t accusatory, but she felt like she had been hit over the head with the smells, not that she in any way blamed the redhead who was in the aisle. “You make candles too?” Not that she was snooping in his basket.
She was totally snooping. But really, why shouldn’t she? It wasn’t often you met another candle maker!

Myles sheepishly looked at the girl who spoke; his cheeks and ears were tinged red and he shifted positions. He nodded, confirming her suspicion, but couldn't help but admit, "It was me. I knocked them over, so to speak. At home though, not here. It's that bad?"
He knew it was bad. She was just the first person who had the misfortune to be close enough to him to identify the usually pleasant smells. From a distance, he probably smelled just fine. Up close? Apple and pine, shoved down your throat.
"...I can't smell it anymore. Today has been, arguably, relatively unpleasant. I don't know if I'll ever smell again. My candle making days may be over," he sighed dramatically.
...And then reached out for a few scents and put them in his basket.
"...But then, they might not be, so I have to be prepared."
He flashed Emily a smile. "It's usually very relaxing. I usually make candles, and soaps. And sometimes perfume, but I hope you don't judge my abilities to make any of those based on the state I'm in now. This is a total fluke, I promise!"

Emily laughed, taking a step away from Myles. “I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s that bad...but it is pretty awful, yeah. I mean, I won’t go and say that it’s the worst thing I’ve ever smelled, if it wasn’t so...much of it, it would be nice, even...but I’m betting you could go a few days at least without bathing and nobody would notice.”
There were some patrons at her library that she honestly wished would smell like this and not of how they smelled, but..she wasn’t going to go into that, not right now with a perfect stranger. “So, you make candles too? That’s pretty awesome. I work at the South branch library, it’s downtown a ways, anyway, we have craft sales and that’s what’s going on with me, we have a big one coming up and I don’t have a single thing to sell, so it’s crunch time to make some nice candles. I normally make the most money, but…”
She heaved a dramatic sigh. “I’ve been severely slacking recently, there’s no real excuse for it.”

Myles laughed but still seemed embarassed. "When I go home I'm taking a few more showers. I just hope I can get some more of the smell out. I'm afraid to go out in public like that--I read about the library's craft sale," he said, apparently slipping easily from one topic to the next.
"Picking candles was a good idea, they make every house feel more like a home. I started making them because, well--to be honest, I'm not good at much. I'm kinda sorta going to school right now, but I'm not...trying very hard at it." He felt guilty admitting and sighed. "But I'm going for business. Hoping that it'll teach me enough to open my own business, like--a real store front!"
He seemed excited, but it fizzled just slightly. "But right now I like to do things online. It's nice, working at your own pace. Oh, but," he smiled at her. "If you've made the most money before, I'm sure you can do it again! If you're having a hard time, you should just invite some friends over? Candlemaking is pretty easy if you give them basic tasks and save the hard parts for yourself. Unless that's cheating! Either way, I'm sure you'll do fine!"

Emily nodded, listening and picking out a few small bottles of fragrance. “Well...I’ll tell you wat. Since I’m not likely to get as many candles made as I really need, would you maybe want to help me with the booth? Half the profits go to the library, but the other half we could split between the two of us if you wanted? And...you seem to have a unique way of combining scents, so it might be fun to see what you can come up with. Plus, it’ll get you a little money on the side.”
The woman grabbed a box of wicks and put them into her shopping basket as well. “I’d be more than happy to put your name on the list if you want, we could even come up with a fancy name to call ourselves?”

Myles blinked, apparently a bit surprised by the offer. A smile split across his face and he found himself nodding before he really had time to think about it. "I'd like that a lot, thank you. I'm not very creative, but we can try to come up with a name! Or I can trust you with it!"
If she worked in a library, he trusted that she had to be much smarter than he could aspire to be.
"I would really appreciate that, actually. I have a few scents I need feedback on--I have a stall at the flea market, too, but it's only open two days a week, so I'd be very happy to try a different venue! Oh, uhm--maybe I can meet up with you sometime, if you wanted to approve the scents, and I could figure out when and where you want me?" he asked; he was already pulling out his cell phone to exchange numbers just to make sure he didn't forget before he left.

Emily looked terribly excited and pulled her phone out too. “This is going to be great for business, I can already feel it.” She was half thinking that if this really worked out with this kid and they made enough money from the craft fair, maybe she would see if she could start making candles for him to sell at the flea market...she could always use the extra cash. Heck, anyone nowadays could use the extra cash.
“Here, let’s just put our numbers in each others phones, and then we can work something out.” She reached out and swapped the phone in his hand with the phone in hers and punched in her number, then took a fabulous selfie to go with it. Just because she was pushing thirty didn’t mean she wasn’t still hip and cool.
In fact, maybe she was just the front runner for hip and cool. Yeah. She was knee and ice.

Myles laughed as she took a selfie; he carefully typed in his number and took a picture--although his idea of a fabulous selfie was done by puffing out his cheeks like a chipmunk and furrowing his brows. He double checked that he had given her the proper number and then handed her phone back.
He was eager not to stain it with the smell of his spilled aromas. When she had finished, he pocketed his phone and then took a few steps away, mindful of her poor nose.
"Okay! Text me whenever is good for you, I have a pretty loose schedule so I'm good with just about anything! --Thank you so much! I promise, also, I won't show up smellin like this!"
Or, at least, he was going to try his hardest not to.

Emily nodded “I’ll be texting you soon, just as soon as I figure out how many candles I can manage to get done, and i’ll be sure to get you on the staff roster for the craft sale, so, honestly expect a text within the next few days at most.”
She finally turned away from the redhead and looked back at the seemingly endless rows of oils, picking a few from the piles and putting them gently into her basket.
“Well, good luck getting yourself de-smelled!” The woman grinned and gave a little wave, heading deeper into the store to do just a little more shopping before she went back to actually begin making the candles.
