Nuri was walking back from his training and toward his home, still dressed in his casual military uniform and nodding to those who passed. As he walked away from the palace, he always noticed a strange transition between those who knew him as a solider and those who knew him because of his family. He was both admired and looked at with alarm depending on what people knew him for. Although many who were angry with him kept it quiet, he once had to sternly tell someone off for the vulgar slur they hissed as he walked by.
Aseara was his world, and his children were his life.
Turning the corner and heading past the market, Nuri pulled a hand through his hair and took a deep breath. Knowing that he had even more children on the way was a stressful thought, and he was still processing bringing in additional hybrids into a city that still didn't quite accept the thought.

It was a rare day that Adenah was allowed to accompany her mother on errands. Most days her little family either went out together, or one or her parents would do the shopping on their own. Today, however, was Adenah's special day with her momma and she was determined to make the best of it!
At least she would have, if momma wasn't so busy talking to people. Adenah had seen the scruffy looking men a few times before; she knew they worked for her momma, but beyond that Adenah didn't pay too much attention. Dris'rynne was talking and talking and talking....It was just so boring that Adenah wandered off a bit. Not so far as to make her mother worry, but poking around had to be better than listening to boring stuff!
It took her a while to spot him, but once she did the sight brought Adenah to a halt. She sucked in her breath on a gasp; that man looked just like the ones from the parades! He was dressed fancy and everything!
Wasting no time, Adenah made a bee line towards him and when she got close enough she brought her little bare feet to a stumbling halt. What should she say? Something smooth, like papa, or maybe...Fumbling over her words, Adenah settled with a plain, "Hi mister. "

It seemed his thoughts couldn't escape him, as before him appears the form of a hybrid girl. She wasn't very typical in coloring for a hybrid, in fact she had no markings that set her aside as half matori. Her skin was dark, and a different shade than the dark skin of some obans. She was clearly a hybrid, most likely a shifter hybrid, and to be alone in this area was a bit surprising. It wasn't something people would miss, and most around here still were sour about such open relationships with non-obans.
As she spoke, he narrowed his eyes a moment, before glancing around to see if any shifters were in the area. When he didn't see any, he looked back down and shook his head.
"Are you here alone?"

"Nope. Momma's right over the-" It was only when Adenah turned around to point out her mother that she realized she had walked off on Dris'rynne. "...she's here, just not here here. Momma will find me. She always does."
The little one was only the slightest bit concerned that Dris'rynne wouldn't be able to track her down. Her mother was usually very quick to catch on, especially when in a crowd. She didn't expect that she would be on her own for long, and besides, she wasn't really alone anyway!
"How come you look like the parade-y guys?" Adenah took a hesitant step forward, clearly itching to reach out and touch his clothes. She kept looking at them, then back up to him, and back to the clothes again. "And how come your sword is all floppy? Is it broke?" The little one pointed to his whip.

The only sign of his discomfort was the fact his jaw tightened up. He grew up with a younger sister, and raised three kids who often disappeared one after another. A lost child was something he was used to, but never really could accept. To see this girl in front of him, uncertain about her mother, seemed to pull at him in a bit of an uncomfortable way. He was worried, and he didn't really enjoy being worried.
But the girl seemed certain her mother would find her. Yet...Nuri silently vowed to stick to the girl until the mother arrived.
"Parade?" He asked a moment, before remembering the previous parade a few months prior, "Oh..." His uniform. It was a bit gaudy, with all the metal and gold.
"I'm a captain in the army. Unfortunately, we always have to ware the parade-y outfits..." He responded softly, before blinking at her comment of his whip, "It's not a sword, it's a whip. I admit it's mostly for show...my beasts are the ones that tend to do most of my fighting..."

The little one gasped, her mouth widening to form a perfectly shaped 'o'. "A captain? Really?" She bounced on the balls of her feet, little hands coming up to her mouth to hide an excited squeal. She'd heard the term once or twice, always associating it with things that Momma was worried about. "What's a captain do? Do you protect people like the guard or..?"
Her wide, crimson eyes moved from his face back to the whip. "Seems like it would hurt though, if you got hit with it. You don't...hurt your beasties, do you?" For a moment she seemed to pause and look at him, as if waiting for the bubble of coolness around him to pop and become something much darker.

Her excitement was a bit endearing, and Nuri easily relaxed despite her overzealous nature. She was a child, after all, and they were innocent in their actions. So, he easily slipped in to describing his role.
"I spent many years learning the best way to tame and train beasts so they are strong and loyal. After so much hard work, my superiors decided I would be a great person to share my knowledge with the new recruits. Now I help them train tamed creatures so we can be strong and protect our nation."
"When I tame, I often use a leather whip. I makes a sharp noise, and catches their attention. I prefer to tame them using other means than by scaring them or hurting them...think of it this way. If someone came to you and pinched your arm, would you follow them?

"Woooow," Adenah murmured, the awe easily detectable in her voice. He was so...so...so amazing! People listened to what he had to say, he got to wear fancy clothes, play with animals, and keep others safe...and when he spoke of 'protecting our nation' Adenah could easily picture him doing it.
"Nooo," She squeaked indignantly. "...but I would look at them. I wouldn't want to follow anyone who hurt me." Thinking back on it, Adenah wondered if her momma had ever used a whip to get her worker's attention. Sometimes they didn't listen so well and she raised her voice, but Adenah had never seen Dris'rynne hurt the men who worked for her.
"What kind of beasts do you tame?"

Nodding, Nuri sent her a reassuring smile.
"Exactly, so why should we expect the creatures of this world to follow our command if we show them pain?"
He paused a moment, "This is a lesson I tried to teach my men, to use compassion and positive actions to reassure our beasts. So far, we've seen a lot of our creatures trust and protect us because of this..."
She seemed interested still, so Nuri grinned at her question, "All sorts. I've tamed beasts from across the sea, even to the top of the mountain. I've even climbed mountains hunting for creatures who have disappeared from this world..."
It had been many years, but he still recalled his great journey and the discovery of the frozen egg that currently resided at his home.

"Really?" The tops of mountains and over seas?! "No kiddin', mister?" If what he said was true then...then he was like some kind of story come to life! Like those ones the old lady Neorah tried telling them when she watched them. Before she eventually fell asleep sitting up in her chair, that is.
"Weren't you ever scared?" Doing all of that seemed really scary to her, but he was a Captain! Adenah bet he could fight janarim bare handed and never get scared! "I would have been...hey hey hey, do you think that if I joined the military I could do that to?" Any thoughts of them not accepting her because of her mixed blood didn't even cross Adenah's mind. In her world possibilities were endless.
She could wear fancy clothes like he had, and help people while going on amazing adventures! Who didn't want that?!

Nuri laughed a bit at the girl's response, remembering when his eldest were as young as she. It was a pure interaction, something he was not used to.
"I was a little nervous, but not scared. I had allies around me to keep me safe and my familiars who were trained well. At the end of the day, it was all worth the adventure."
As she spoke of joining the military, he paused. He didn't really recall many who were part of the military and not Oban. There may have been a handful of Matori hybrids, but one who is half outsider.
"Well...there are a lot of requirements to join the military...a lot of tests you need to pass..." He responded uncertainly, not wanting to get her hopes up.

"Allies, huh?" The way she spoke was a little dejected. Adenah knew enough 'big' words to know that meant friends and she...didn't have a lot of those. She didn't need 'em, not for playing, that's what her sister was for, but outside of Ani...
The world could get pretty lonely.
"What kind of tests? I'm real smart, Tes says so. And I train every morning with my momma, so I'll be strong too!"
