Dexurn was just filling in for a few days, there in the northern woods. An associate had asked him to fill in at the lumber yard for a sick coworker. Considering that he had two little ones and a wife to care for, the extra opportunity for some spare pocket money was not to be snubbed. The first day, he had followed his guide closely, learning the work and risks and safety measures. The physical labor was quite enjoyable, giving him something to focus on that was different than normal.
The second day, he got a little more wiggle room. He and his partner had just decided on a tree to bring down. Dex got two swings of his axe in before something dropped onto his head. He yelped with surprise and jumped away from the tree, one hand reaching up to whatever was now clinging to his head. Small claws dug into his face and neck, and something thick wrapped around his neck. Panicking a little, he saw his coworker reaching for him in a blur. The length tightened around his neck, and he reached again to grab at it. Growling, he got a good grip on a handful of fur and yanked. Long scratches opened up along his skin as he pulled at the creature. Sharp fangs bit into his grabbing hand, and he howled out from pain. Finally, that seemed to startle the creature enough to jump away; claws making fresh scratches as it grabbed his arm to scurry.
When he could see straight, he saw a furry thing just a little shorter than his arm. Its big ears stood wide and alert, eyes the same. Hissing, it scurried along the ground toward a tree to quickly climb up. His coworker called it a kehtra, and was obviously hiding a smirk of amusement. Apparently, getting beat up by such a creature was quite amusing.
Dex grumbled and picked up his axe. He had to go clean up those scratches...
Out of frustration, he swung the axe at the tree to stick it in the trunk. A sharp hiss sounded from above, and he yanked his shield up off his back in the nick of time. Just as his shield was over his head, another kehtra dropped down, irritated that its tree was being shaken. This time, Dex wasn’t about to put up with another set of scratches. Shade would worry enough unless he could find a healer to fix them first! He waved his arm wildly, making it difficult for the kehtra to do anything more than hold on. With the critter clinging to the shield, Dex spun and slammed the edge against the tree. Despite his irritation, he didn’t want to crush the silly creature. The shockwave and momentum sent the creature flying, the fuzzy body rolling along the ground a fair distance. It wobbled a moment along the ground before it could see straight again and scurry off after its partner with its fur all fluffed out.
Apparently, the sight was too much for the other worker. Watching the other man doubled over with laughter, Dex couldn’t help joining in. Dang, laughing made the scratches hurt...
