Hobbies: Reading -
It's hard to say which came first for Adel; sociology or a love of reading. In a lot of cases the two go hand in hand for the man. He's got a a rather insatiable thirst for knowledge that drives him to seek out any material he can find regarding socioeconomic growth between first and third world nations, and the differences observed therein. He's amassed a small library that takes up the whole of a wall in his apartment. Within those shelves though, there is also a collection of biographies about people coming from all walks of life.
World Travel -
There are very few places on the planet that are identical to another location. So many factors come into play through geography, and Adel is fascinated by the differences that can be found between neighboring cities, or opposing climates. There is so much to see and experience, and Adel wants to see as much as he can before he's incapable of doing so. As often as he's able, he hops on a plane and heads out to some new corner of the world under the premise of field research, and while it is that, he get's more out of the trips than valuable work material alone.
Documentaries -
While there are many wonderful things available on Netflix or Hulu to binge and enjoy, Adel often finds himself bypassing the sitcoms and movies for the plethora of documentaries hiding in the depths of the streaming code. This is his go to when he finds himself grounded for longer than he'd like to be. Exploration of the world by means of 40mm lens and wide angles. Nature docs are usually his favorite, but if something catches his interest outside of the genre he's still very likely to not only watch it, but enjoy it as well.
Virtues: Charming -
Not just a pretty face with a winning smile intended to melt you down to your toes, Adel is a bit of a smooth talker, and can be(often is) quite the gentleman. Articulate, knowledgeable, and even-toned. He's slow to anger, and seems naturally agreeable to most he engages with. An over all pleasant guy that manages to toe the line between approachable and intimidating.
Dutiful -
Adel understands where he's needed, who needs him, and when obligations need fulfilling. If he makes a promise to go help someone move on a Friday night when all the bars are open and his favorite shows are going on, he sucks it up and helps with the move. School receives similar treatment — if a deadline nears for a work project, Adel El-Kader disappears off the face of the planet to ensure the project is finished not just on time, but with everything clearly filed, organized, and referenced. As well, he understands that family is of utmost import to him; he dedicates himself as much to his family as he does to his promises. Basically, he's the son and brother that anyone would want for how diligent he is in devoting himself.
Incisive -
One of his primary contributions to the field of sociology is his ability to read people and situations accurately. Knowing what to say and how to say it stems from comprehending the framework for any particular interaction; Adel knows to take in a person's body language, their location, the time of day, and far more to better understand his situation. From there, making necessary choices is a matter of finding what works best in the infinite puzzle that is interacting with people. But his analytical abilities aren't limited to interpersonal communications — Adel is just as good at gathering and processing information for work obligations as well.
Flaws: Repressed — Long years of putting on his charming face and serving his duties as the perfect son and brother have eroded Adel's ability to express himself properly. Good news, bad news, clever news, tragic news, and surprising news are all taken in with the same placid smile, regardless of how he felt in reaction. Even anger finds no outlet — Adel may seethe inwardly, but he cannot find the tongue and motivation to break that socially acceptable appearance and speak his mind. All those repressed emotions leave a bitter aftertaste, and Adel chooses to distance himself to prevent more run-ins with these bad situations.
Disingenuous — The other side to the coin with repression, Adel chooses to act in honor of what others expect than in honor of what he thinks or feels. So while he bottles up those emotions, he chooses the face best suited to the interaction at hand, be it a pleasant smile or a neutral expression or a gravely concerned scowl. Doing so avoids the hassle of conflict with other people. Doing so buys him into other people's good graces and costs him less effort overall than being himself. And while others might find the practice troublesome or maddening, Adel finds no problem with it. But he'd just as soon forget the complainers minutes after their conversation.
Dismissive — Adel has three categories for people: family, friends,(the few he has managed to make through the years) and forgettables. And since family was determined since birth, nearly everyone else falls into the forgettable category. Even if someone decides they quite like him, need his help, or could use him for a critical role in their company, Adel won't bother even having an opinion of that person. For the most part they won't ever ping his radar but for what they can give him, and past that, they're soon forgotten. He already has his set of interpersonal obligations that he cares for; everyone else is just background noise.
