Quest Codename: TREASUREHUNT
Chosen Required: Minimum 2, maximum 5.
Setting: The Sphinx's Lair
Summary: In the back of the Armory is a door that leads to the Prytaneum Vault. Chosen willing to answer the Sphinx's tasks can make their way down for a chance to acquire some mystical artifacts.

Part One: Characters pass through the door and enter a room made of gold, much too large to be contained in any way within the Armory. It is long and empty and lined with simple columns. At the far end sits a Sphinx, watching them with narrowed cat eyes.

"Come Chosen, come Heroes, come show me what you are made of. If I like what I see, perhaps I'll grant you access to the treasures I guard..."

Pick two of the three rolled themes which your character describes. They must answer truthfully, but they do not need to share the whole truth; they can describe as much or as little of the memories in question as you'd like.

However, the one they do not describe they instead live through as if it is happening once again, and all other Chosen who are on this quest with them view the memory as well. Write out a scene related to the theme in as much detail as you'd like, ending when it feels appropriate, but make sure to share something about your character's past/memories in doing so.
_________________________________________

Part Three: Once all participating Chosen have completed the Sphinx's task -- aka, explaining two memories on rolled themes and living through a third -- collect a bonus 25XP and roll 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-8: 3x Heart's Blood: Each can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
9-16: 3x Poisonous Dung: Each can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
17-24: 3x Moly Flower: Small white flowers with a dark root. Each can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
25-32: 3x Rabid Blood: Each vial of rabid beast's blood can be used once to deal an extra 3 damage [after modifiers] on your next successful attack, after which it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
33-40: Fine Wine This wine has been cursed! It can be used three times in battle, after which it is consumesd and leaves your inventory forever. Each time you use it, roll 1d8;

If you roll a 1-2, nothing happens.
If you roll a 3-5, you're turned into a small animal and you deal 5 damage each turn, no roll required. This effect lasts 3 rounds.
If you roll a 6-7, you're turned into a medium animal and you deal 8 damage each turn, no roll required. This effect lasts 3 rounds.
if you roll a 8, you're turned into a large animal and you deal 12 damage each turn, no roll required. This effect lasts 3 rounds.
41-75: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.
76-95: Sphinx's Eye: A glimmering, brightly-colored gem. This is a magical material which can be used to create magical weapons down the line.
96-100: Circe Staff Piece: This is a magical material which can be used to create magical weapons down the line.

There had been rumors going around about an impossible room situated in the back of the armor, though the sheer size of the apparent space wasn't the only thing remarkable about the place. There had also been rumors about something dwelling within the room. A beast, right out of mythology, though not quite the denomination he'd been expecting.

"I heard it was a sphinx," he said a little doubtfully, head turning just enough from the armory they were heading towards to glance at Asher. Rumors were just rumors without confirmation, and this particular tale would be easy enough to prove, given it's so-close location.

Asher's response was a huge, leonine yawn: a flash of teeth and a slow stretch of the small of his back, working out some king. It was possible -- or more than possible, really -- that Ed's summons had shaken him out of an easy nap. At least he didn't seem resentful of this fact, but maybe that was just because he was still dozing, deep in the back of his mind, not fully there...

"Oh yeah?" He hadn't heard any of the rumors. And maybe, in this moment, he couldn't remember what a sphinx was. "What's that mean for us?"

"Hm?" Ed blinked, glancing back at Asher, but actually looking at him this time. The smaller man didn't seem quite awake yet, which he supposed wasn't exactly surprising. He suspected he'd woken Asher up when he'd gone to enlist his help.

"Riddles," he clarified simply, as if that should have been enough of an answer. Then he expanded, in case it wasn't. "Sphinxes give riddles." Or at least they did in all the sources he could recall them in. Which, to be fair, wasn't that much.

"Well, we're ********, then." Asher didn't really sound worried though. Maybe because he didn't know the rest of the mythology; the death that came from failing to answer the sphinx's question correctly. He rolled his shoulders out, eyes flicking up to the dragon's head that adorned one end of the armory as they passed under it. He couldn't quite get used to the sight.

"...I think you should go first."

Ed had to chuckle, though there was a certain quality to it that suggested he was aware of the whole lore surrounding sphinxes and riddles. This was In the compound though, so they wouldn't have let them have access to the thing if it was really likely to kill them, right? Right?

"Why me?" His head turned sharply as he looked down at Asher, hands on the door in front of them. They were heavy, but opened more or less smoothly as he leaned into them.

The room beyond was vast. Bigger than should have been possible, given the deminsions of the armory from the outside. Edward gave a low, impressed whistle as they walked in, before the voice of the creature at the back of the room stole away the whole of his attention.

"Your idea, you hauled me along, and --" As the voice spoke, Asher paused -- three or four steps behind Ed, looking up toward the ceiling and then beyond to the creature. This was the moment when he finally remembered what a sphinx was, now that he was faced with one. He still didn't remember what they were, or what they meant.

"...and this way you go first." He pushed a hand between Ed's shoulders and nudged him forward. Asher would go after.

Well, that wasn't the request Edward had been expecting. Perhaps the lore on sphinxes was off, or perhaps there were more than one sort. Questions worth asking, but not if the beast waiting expectantly before them.

Asher's shove pushed him forward a few more steps, but the momentum didn't carry. Now that they were here, it just didn't seem like that great of an idea anymore, and honestly, he was having a hard time recalling why it had ever seemed like one to begin with. "Chicken," he tossed back at the shorter man, sparing a quick glance over his shoulder before giving the sphinx his full attention.

"Memories, huh?" Delightful. Ed loved sharing details about himself. So. Much. "Ok."

He thought about it for a moment, trying to decide what he'd be willing to share. "Well..." he spoke slowly, hesitantly. This wasn't what he'd been expecting. "When I was younger, my dad used to take me ice fishing all the time in the winter. This one time, after hours of not catching anything, something grabs my hook hard enough to almost tank me into the hole in the ice." Benign, childhood memories were safe.

"Took almost forty minutes, but eventually I managed to pull in a car that was close to three feet long. My dad was shocked the line held it."

Asher snorted a bit -- because of course Ed's first story would be a big fish tale. And anyone who spoke about just how big the fish they caught was probably was bullshitting. But he didn't say that out loud. Instead, he considered his own theme:

Grudge. After a moment, he blew out a sigh.

"Well, I guess, in the tenth grade there was this one kid who was smart but not real clever, if you get what I'm saying. Straight As, but anything you said got under his skin, and he was kind of an a**, so maybe one day I stole his phone when he wasn't paying attention and changed the ringtone to some Carrie Underwood song and then called it around his friends."

He didn't look apologetic. Quite the contrary; the story rev'd him up a bit, hinted at a smile around his mouth.

"And called him Carrie all they way until he graduated. Worth it, even with the number of times he waited for me after school..."

Hands disappearing into his pockets, Ed watched as Asher recounted a memory from school. It had the blonde raising his brows at the shorter man, a little bit of surprise showing on angular features.

But it was his turn again. He turned back to the sphinx, those his gaze jumped to Asher again very briefly before settling.

"When I was in middle school, seventh grade, I think. I came down with pneumonia. It started as bronchitis, but I had a habit of milking it when I was sick, so when it started to get worse, my parents didn't exactly jump to rush me back to the doctor." He'd drawn a hand from his pocket so he could scratch at his cheek as he spoke.

"So instead of a week on antibiotics, I ended up spending a week and a half in the hospital on an I.V. drip."

"That was a lame story." he said it easily, immediately, shaking his head as he looked up at Ed -- eyes just a tiny bit narrowed. And maybe when he turned his mind to a story of his own, it came with an edge of let me show that up.

Shamelessness.

"One of my friends from high school ended up at NYU, so when I lost my job one fall I decided to go crash at his place for a bit." He scratched the corner of his mouth as he said it, considering how best to set this up.

"Naturally, me hanging out with him and his roommate and a couple of his friends led to us getting our hands on a couple of forties, and as the night progressed, we went through the stages of drunkenness.

"As we went from loud to fuzzy around the edges to pains in the asses, someone suggested we streak through Washington Square Park. At first it was a joke, but once we reached the bottom of the bottle, it became something much more serious. A pact."

He paused for a moment, and here, perhaps, he was going to embellish --

"Keep in mind this was ******** November in the city. Which meant it was cold. Both a good thing and a bad one; we could just haul on coats and shoes and nothing else and be ready to be run. But the guys chickened out when we got down to the park, seeing that it wasn't as deserted as they really wanted it to be."

He shook his head just a bit, rolling his shoulders comfortably. "But Chris and I did it. Two laps each, hooting the whole time, freezing our balls off and running like hell when someone called it in."
