User ImageThe night had been a long one. Since their initial meeting, the sun had set and moonlight had settled in, bright enough to where Vaskr could make out the figure of his companion. He had somewhat taken charge of the situation, moving them away from where their first conversation had taken place, but not by far. How long it had been he couldn't be certain of. The middle of the night had come, but there was not yet any sign of dawn.

Vaskr had spoken for most of the time. That was it. Just talking. Divulging information about his life, but only as much as he deemed necessary and none of it any concrete promise. He didn't need her thinking he could do more than he was capable of. Didn't need her getting suspect at any claims of grandeur or thinking herself manipulated. He'd told her of his own visions. How they came to him, body-wretching and pulling him from consciousness. How they happened whether he was awake or asleep and rendered him immobile for an unpredictable amount of time. How, because of it he traveled alone. It was a weakness, and a blessing. His visions were often obscure, and needed some time and effort to decipher. Others, like his nephew, had visions only in their sleep and held onto them about as well as a quickly fading dream.

All of this he explained as he lay atop a rock, his front legs hanging off the front edge. "I've heard tales of some who have visions that are triggered by being near or touching something. I've never seen it myself, but…" his voice faded and he shrugged, as if saying in body language that he had no reason to doubt the stories. Everything about the way he spoke and lay suggested that he was more comfortable than he had been earlier. This positioning was intentional, indicating to Adelheid that he felt no need to be guarded around her.

In all honesty, his words and actions weren't all pointed and manipulative. It wasn't often that he had the chance to just relax and speak to another, let alone another seer (at least, a potential seer) that he could be uninhibited around. If he seemed somewhat enthusiastic about the conversation, it wasn't completely a ruse.

Adelheid's eyes were glued onto Vaskr. She hadn't stopped looking at him since their meeting (besides a couple of times when, doubting herself, she cast them down, but only briefly). Something about him was just... Spellbinding. Was it the way his orange-red markings writhed, as if they too lived with every movement he made, his muscles rippling under his pelt? His pale crystal-pink (or orange? or golden?) eyes that glinted in the moonlight as the ghostly orb reached the height of its circuit around the earth? Or his words?

What Vaskr spoke of was everything that Adelheid had been so desperate to uncover within herself. The lioness knew she had potential- and a lot of it, but it was locked away deep inside of her. It was maddening. So she listened to Vaskr, her breathing shallow and quiet so she wouldn't miss a word.

She had been padding alongside him for an unknown distance in an unknown direction for an unknown time. But what Adelheid hoped to gain- expected (even if it might have been foolish) perhaps, would be worth whatever struggle she might face when she returned to the Myrsky Syntynyt (although that was far from her mind). Now, she lay below him at the base of the rock, scooting closer to hear his every word.

Visions triggered by touching? Suddenly, she became aware of herself. Was that a flush she felt warm her cheeks and cross her face? The lioness scooted backwards, not defensive, but... shy?

Come on, Adelheid! Snap out of it! You're a viking!

"What triggers yours? Nothing? Are they just that abrupt? Like a bolt of lightening?" She furrowed her brows at him, relentless endless question after question for him.

"Like bolts of lightning," he repeated, pale eyes peering down at her. Vaskr watched her scoot but thought nothing of it, and her fur was far too dark for him to notice the flush. He didn't speak for a few moments. Hours might have passed since it had become dark, but he couldn't be exactly sure. While the middle of the night may have come and gone, there wasn't yet any sight of dawn. Vaskr could see the outline of her shape, barely make out the blood-like markings of her shoulder. Yes, she had the potential even if she had never experienced the visions before. It was no surprise that she was goodblood, after all. Her size alone would give that away.

Vaskr moved down from his perch in a calm motion, landing a few paces away. He moved towards her, stopping in a closer proximity than they had been before. The cold night air made his fur bristle in a way she could probably see. In the night air their breaths were white wisps that disappeared into the dark above them.

"One of my sisters told me of one of her littermates that was the same way," now, the distance closed, his voice had dropped in volume, still a low and velvety rumble. In those moments, he had decided to change his tactics ever so slightly, trying to be open. Almost enticing. "Runs in the blood, I suppose. My sister, though. Nothing special. Her son even less so." His nephew. A disappointment, so far. It was a shame. "Maybe it gets diluted. Who knows. It's mysterious, the nature of it all. Hard to predict, it seems."

Adelheid remained silent. The large black lioness left the words suspended in the now-frosty night air, the chill almost freezing them and making them tangible. She watched him descend, and held her breath as he drew near.

She was a statue, carved of onyx, rubies inlaid where her coat was brushed with blood. Her eyes, though their color was not vivid, were shiny and bright.

Vaskr was like a ghost before her. Not corporeal of flesh, but in some manner, still living and present. Where did the ephemeral wisps of breath end and the lion begin?

She stood as he breathed his words like a secret, only for her, without increasing the distance between them. Her eyes searched his face for more answers but found none. That wasn't good enough. She wanted concretes, attainable, reachable, achievable things. Codes and riddles were useless and maddening.

What if she never had a vision? How would she find the god who was her father without god-like powers to level the playing field? She felt any hope or optimism drain from her body, leaving her light headed. Her eyes flicked back and forth on the ground. What possibility did she have? What choice did she have?

"Vaskr..." Her voice was more hushed than his, breathy and beckoning.

"Have you heard of this ability being passed to or stronger in the offspring of two Seers?" Could he sense that this was possibly Adelheid's last hope?

Her hushed voice made his skin crawl. Vaskr sat silently as she spoke, his breaths slow. Pale body seeming like it almost glowed in the moonlight, he curled his tail around his hind legs. As she spoke his pale eyes never left her onyx form.

"I haven't. I mean, never seen it in person, anyways. There are always stories, of course. Legends. It's hard to figure out where the truth is in all of it, but…" his voice trailed off and he tore his eyes away, staring into the darkness with a thoughtful look that was all purpose and intentional. "But it has to have something to do with blood, right? Or maybe that's just how I'm inclined to see it. My mother is the goddess of Blood Magic. Maybe that's why I've always thought of it that way. Maybe that's why I think…" pale eyes back on her. "Maybe that's why I think there's truth to it. That the blood of strength produces strength."

She'd come to the conclusion on her own. It made his heart almost skip a beat with excitement. It was a satisfying feeling, letting her take the reins and have her go exactly where he had wanted. He looked into her eyes, then. What exactly was she thinking, Vaskr wondered. Was she suggesting what he hoped she was? The lion did his best to look kind. Helpful. He was hopeful of her. She had strength and potential. Came from a pride that created warriors. What better circumstance was there for his bloodline to flourish? Vaskr thought on it, and did his best not to let a grin break his soft expression.

Blood magic?

A shiver rippled through her body, her blood became hot and she felt her heart race to pump it through her body. Was she holding her breath now? She just couldn't tell anymore. She was so close to having what she wanted. If there was any chance she could have Seers without mating with a god, this had to be her best chance, right?

She moved her face even closer to his, the blackness of her fur seemingly absorbing the moonlight shining off of his pallor like a black hole, not reflecting, only consuming. She had to have it. His powers and abilities. She could almost grasp her father's identity in her paw now. There would be nothing to stop her and cause it to slip through her claws. There was no remorse in the thought of using him for her gain. This was bigger than whatever she might feel or ever come to feel about Vaskr. She would have sacrificed the lion right then and there if he had said his tie to Blood Magic could have brought Adelheid her father.

"My grandfather is a god. My father is a god. Your mother is a goddess..." The black lioness circled Vaskr, letting her tail brush him, making the first contact.

"Who better than us to try?"

As Adelheid drew closer the blackness of her pelt was engulfing. Vaskr stared into that darkness, unhesitating. The sound of that heartbeat. Was it his, or hers? He set his eyes to hers. Daughter of a god. Granddaughter of a god. He couldn't ask for more. As she moved circles around him he remained unmoving, peach eyes following him as best as they could. As she spoke, a low rumble echoed out of his chest. Vaskr's tail twitched, A motion of contained excitement. His ears swiveled, ever alert.

Who better to try?

His paws knead into the ground in response to her words. He let her keep circling. Only when the onyx lioness was once again in front of him did he stand. The bulky lion got to his feet and moved towards her, his steps smooth but quick. In a moment he was close to her. Closer than they had been before. His skin crawled as he paced around her in a quick and small circle. His fur brushed against hers and he continued to move until he was at her side. His maw wen to her ear. He could feel the warmth of her body in the cool night.

"I could think of no one better," he murmured, his voice more a rumble than anything. Vaskr's tail traced down hers. Pale eyes glanced around them. "It's open, here. Perhaps unsafe. I know of another. Shall we?" His voice remained a murmur as he led them away.

Adelheid's instincts made her very afraid when he towered over her, but when her reason returned to her, the pounding of her heart in her ears was exhilarating rather than terrifying. So he had agreed to her contract. She wasn't sure how she felt about its (her) methods towards trying to achieve what she wanted most, but the lioness figured she would have plenty of time later to unpack and analyze them. But now...

She nodded, as silent as she was dark. She didn't even have time to think of how ironic it would be if she had a vision right then and there. Would Vaskr have taken the nulling of the plan anyway? She didn't worry that it would come to finding out about that, anyway.

She glanced around her, unsure of what she would have even been looking for. Oh s**t- she thought, what if Eikthyrnir was looking for her? Not that she wanted to rejoin him. Quite the contrary. She didn't want her brother interfering as they sealed their pact. Silently, she glided along Vaskr through the dark.

The sun rose and washed away the darkness. Vaskr was already far from the small cave that he had made sanctuary for the night. As soon as he determined Adelheid to be asleep he had left and made as much distance as possible. He didn't think the lioness would bother tracking him—he was sure she had other places to be and besides, she'd already gotten what she wanted. Still, the pale lion tracked through some rivers just in case.

Adelheid, daughter and granddaughter of gods. Warrior of the Stormborn.

It was promising. More than he could have hoped for. How it would turn out… well. Only time would tell.

It was dawn and the pale lion moved further and further from the coast. His tail twitched behind him and his face remained stoic, despite being pleased by the outcome of the prior hours. Maybe he'd meet her again one day. Maybe not. Either way, it didn't matter much to him. His job here was done.

Adelheid awoke to find herself cold and alone, and very far from home. She managed to drag herself out of the cave to sap the heat from the sun to expedite the warming of her muscles. The black lioness looked over the plains. Had she expected Vaskr to be there when she woke up? Perhaps she thought they would have another few days together, just to be sure it had taken.

To her own musings, Adelheid shrugged. She heaved herself into a standing position, shook any lingering dust and dew from her coat, and headed back in towards the Stormborn. With the rising sun designating east, it was going to be a long walk, but not a remarkably arduous one. She would find some kind of trinket or token to take home as sign of a successful first viking, but Adelheid knew that the greatest boon would not be visible for several months to come (if at all- but she allowed herself to hope).
